Entropy of spatial monopole currents in pure SU(2) QCD at finite temperature

We study properties of space-like monopole trajectories in the Maximal Abelian gauge of quenched SU(2) QCD at the finite temperature. We concentrate on infrared monopole clusters which are responsible for the confinement properties of the theory. We determine numerically the effective action of the monopoles projected onto the three-dimensional time-slice. Then we derive the length distributions of the monopole loops and fix their entropy.

The compact Q=2 Abelian Higgs model in the London limit: vortex-monopole chains and the photon propagator

The confining and topological properties of the compact Abelian Higgs model with doubly-charged Higgs field in three space-time dimensions are studied. We consider the London limit of the model. We show that the monopoles are forming chain-like structures (kept together by ANO vortices) the presence of which is essential for getting simultaneously permanent confinement of singly-charged particles and breaking of the string spanned between doubly-charged particles. In the confinement phase the chains are forming percolating clusters while in the deconfinement (Higgs) phase the chains are of finite size. The described picture is in close analogy with the synthesis of the Abelian monopole and the center vortex pictures in confining non--Abelian gauge models. The screening properties of the vacuum are studied by means of the photon propagator in the Landau gauge.

Monopole Chains in the Compact Abelian Higgs Model with doubly-charged Matter Field

We study the properties of topological defects in the lattice compact Abelian Higgs Model with charge Q=2 matter field. We find that monopoles and antimonopoles form chain-like structures which are dense in the confinement/symmetric phase. In this phase the mentioned structures explain both the confinement of single-charged and the breaking of strings spanned between doubly-charged test particles. This observation helps to understand how the non-diagonal gluons, once taken into consideration in the Abelian projection of gluodynamics, could reproduce in this framework the string breaking for adjoint charges.

Finite temperature QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks on 24^3*10 lattice

We present results obtained in QCD with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on $16^3 \times 8$ and $24^3 \times 10$ lattices. We determine the transition temperature in the range of quark masses $0.6<m_π/m_ρ<0.8$ at lattice spacing a$\approx$0.1 fm and extrapolate the transition temperature to the continuum and to the chiral limits.

Monopole gas in three dimensional SU(2) gluodynamics

We study properties of the Abelian monopoles in the Maximal Abelian projection of the three dimensional pure SU(2) gauge model. We match the lattice monopole dynamics with the continuum Coulomb gas model using a method of blocking from continuum. We obtain the Debye screening length and the monopole density in continuum using numerical results for the lattice density of the (squared) monopole charges and for the monopole action. The monopoles treated within our blocking method provide about 75% contribution to the non--Abelian Debye screening length. We also find that monopoles form a Coulomb plasma which is not dilute.

The influence of baryons on the chiral phase transition in QCD

A qualitative analysis of the chiral phase transition in QCD with two massless quarks and non--zero baryon density is performed. It is assumed that at zero baryonic density, $ρ=0$, the temperature phase transition is of the second order. Due to a specific power dependence of baryon masses on the chiral condensate the phase transition becomes of the first order at the temperature $T=T_{\mathrm{ph}}(ρ)$ for $ρ>0$. At temperatures $T_{\mathrm{cont}}(ρ) > T > T_{\mathrm{ph}}(ρ)$ there is a mixed phase consisting of the quark phase (stable) and the hadron phase (unstable). At the temperature $T = T_{\mathrm{cont}}(ρ)$ the system experiences a continuous transition to the pure chirally symmetric phase.

Blocking from continuum and monopoles in gluodynamics

We review the method of blocking of topological defects from continuum used as a non--perturbative tool to construct effective actions for these defects. The actions are formulated in the continuum limit while the couplings of these actions can be derived from simple observables calculated numerically on lattices with a finite lattice spacing. We demonstrate the success of the method in deriving the effective actions for Abelian monopoles in the pure SU(2) gauge models in an Abelian gauge. In particular, we discuss the gluodynamics in three and four space--time dimensions at zero and non--zero temperatures. Besides the action the quantities of our interest are the monopole density, the magnetic Debye mass and the monopole condensate.

Phase Structure and Gauge Boson Propagator in the radially active 3D compact Abelian Higgs Model

Unfreezing the radial degree of freedom, we study the three-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with compact gauge field and fundamentally charged matter. For small quartic Higgs self coupling and finite gauge coupling the model possesses a first order transition from the confined/symmetric phase to the deconfined/Higgs phase separated at some hopping parameter $κ_c$. Latent heat and surface tension are obtained in the first order regime. At larger quartic coupling the first order transition ceases to exist, and the behavior becomes similar to that known from the London limit. These observations are complemented by a study of the photon propagator in Landau gauge in the two different regimes. The problems afflicting the gauge fixing procedure are carefully investigated. We propose an improved gauge fixing algorithm which uses a finite subgroup in a preselection/preconditioning stage. The computational gain in the expensive confinement region is a speed-up factor around 10. The propagator in momentum space has a non-zero anomalous dimension in the confined phase whereas it vanishes in the Higgs phase. As far as the gauge boson propagator is concerned, we find that the radially active Higgs field provides qualitatively no new effect compared to the radially frozen Higgs field studied before.

On the chiral phase transition in hadronic matter

On projection (in)dependence of monopole condensate in lattice SU(2) gauge theory

We study the temperature dependence of the monopole condensate in different Abelian projections of the SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Using the Frohlich-Marchetti monopole creation operator we show numerically that the monopole condensate depends on the choice of the Abelian projection. Contrary to the claims in the current literature we observe that in the Abelian Polyakov gauge and in the field strength gauge the monopole condensate does not vanish at the critical temperature and thus is not an order parameter.

Profiles of the broken string in two-flavor QCD below and above the finite temperature transition

We study the Abelian flux tube profile of mesonic and the baryonic configurations of static quarks below and above the finite-temperature transition in $N_f=2$ full QCD. To reduce effects of ultra-violet fluctuations we measure Abelian distributions of the action density, the color-electric field and the monopole current after fixing to the maximally Abelian gauge. Changing the distance $R$ between quarks for fixed $T/T_c<1$, one can see a clear signal of string breaking for large $R$. The electric field becomes Coulomb-like and the circulating monopole current disappears. We study also the temperature dependence of the flux profile for fixed $R \approx 0.7$ fm. The disappearance of the squeezed flux is observed clearly above $T_c$. Similar behaviors are observed both in the mesonic and the baryonic systems.

Finite Temperature QCD with Two Flavors of Non-perturbatively Improved Wilson Fermions

We study QCD with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on the $16^3 8$ lattice. We determine the transition temperature at lattice spacings as small as $a \sim 0.12$ fm, and study string breaking below the finite temperature transition. We find that the static potential can be fitted by a two-state ansatz, including a string state and a two-meson state. We investigate the role of Abelian monopoles at finite temperature.

Abelian dominance and gluon propagators in the Maximally Abelian gauge of SU(2) lattice gauge theory

Propagators of the diagonal and the off-diagonal gluons are studied numerically in the Maximal Abelian gauge of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. It is found that in the infrared region the propagator of the diagonal gluon is strongly enhanced in comparison with the off--diagonal one. The enhancement factor is about 50 at our smallest momentum 325 MeV. We have also applied various fits to the propagator formfactors.

The photon propagator in compact QED_{2+1}: the effect of wrapping Dirac strings

We discuss the influence of closed Dirac strings on the photon propagator in the Landau gauge emerging from a study of the compact U(1) gauge model in 2+1 dimensions. This gauge also minimizes the total length of the Dirac strings. Closed Dirac strings are stable against local gauge-fixing algorithms only due to the torus boundary conditions of the lattice. We demonstrate that these left-over Dirac strings are responsible for the previously observed unphysical behavior of the propagator of space-like photons (D_T) in the deconfinement (high temperature) phase. We show how one can monitor the number N_3 of thermal Dirac strings which allows to separate the propagator measurements into N_3 sectors. The propagator in N_3 \neq 0 sectors is characterized by a non--zero mass and an anomalous dimension similarly to the confinement phase. Both mass squared and anomalous dimension are found to be proportional to N_3. Consequently, in the N_3=0 sector the unphysical behavior of the D_T photon propagator is cured and the deviation from the free massless propagator disappears.

Matter degrees of freedom and string breaking in Abelian projected quenched SU(2) QCD

In the Abelian projection the Yang--Mills theory contains Abelian gauge fields (diagonal degrees of freedom) and the Abelian matter fields (off-diagonal degrees) described by a complicated action. The matter fields are essential for the breaking of the adjoint string. We obtain numerically the effective action of the Abelian gauge and the Abelian matter fields in quenched SU(2) QCD and show that the Abelian matter fields provide an essential contribution to the total action even in the infrared region. We also observe the breaking of an Abelian analog of the adjoint string using Abelian operators. We show that the adjoint string tension is dominated by the Abelian and the monopole contributions similarly to the case of the fundamental particles. We conclude that the adjoint string breaking can successfully be described in the Abelian projection formalism.

Blocking of lattice monopoles from the continuum in hot lattice gluodynamics

The Abelian monopoles in lattice gluodynamics are associated with continuum monopoles blocked to the lattice. This association allows to predict the lattice monopole action and density of the (squared) monopole charges from a continuum monopole model. The method is applied to the static monopoles in high temperature gluodynamics. We show that the numerical data both for the density and the action of the lattice monopoles can be described in terms of a Coulomb gas of Abelian monopoles in the continuum.

Finite temperature phase transition in full QCD with $N_f=2$ flavors of clover fermions at $N_t=8$ and 10

We present results for QCD with $N_f=2$ flavors of dynamical quarks using nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on $16^3 \times 8$ and $24^3 \times 10$ lattices. We determine the transition temperature in the range of quark masses $0.6 \lesssim m_π/m_ρ\leq 0.8$. After fixing the Maximal Abelian gauge we investigate the contribution of Abelian monopoles to the Polyakov loop, Polyakov loop susceptibility and confirm Abelian and monopole dominance in full QCD.
