Natural Quasi-Alignment with two Higgs Doublets and RGE Stability

In the context of two Higgs doublet models, we study the conditions required in order to have stable quasi-alignment in flavour space. We show that stability under the RGE imposes strong constraints on the flavour structure of the Yukawa couplings associated to each one of the Higgs doublets. In particular, we find a novel solution, where all Yukawa couplings are proportional to the so-called democratic matrix. This solution is rather unique, since it is the only stable solution which is a good starting point for reproducing the observed pattern of quark masses and mixing. We also show that this stable solution can be obtained by imposing on the Lagrangian a $Z_3 \times Z^\prime_3$ flavour symmetry. Quark masses of the lighter quark generations are generated through the breaking of this discrete symmetry, and, at this stage, scalar mediated FCNC arise, but are naturally suppressed by the smallness of light quark masses. In this way, we relate Higgs alignment to the hierarchy of quark masses through a discrete family symmetry.

Physical Constraints on a Class of Two-Higgs Doublet Models with FCNC at tree level

We analyse the constraints and some of the phenomenological implications of a class of two Higgs doublet models where there are flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) at tree level but the potentially dangerous FCNC couplings are suppressed by small entries of the CKM matrix $V$. This class of models have the remarkable feature that, as a result of a discrete symmetry of the Lagrangian, the FCNC couplings are entirely fixed in the quark sector by $V$ and the ratio $v_2 /v_1$ of the vevs of the neutral Higgs. The discrete symmetry is extended to the leptonic sector, so that there are FCNC in the leptonic sector with their flavour structure fixed by the leptonic mixing matrix. We analyse a large number of processes, including decays mediated by charged Higgs at tree level, processes involving FCNC at tree level, as well as loop induced processes. We show that in this class of models one has new physical scalars beyond the standard Higgs boson, with masses reachable at the next round of experiments.

Scalar sector properties of two-Higgs-doublet models with a global U(1) symmetry

We analyze the scalar sector properties of a general class of two-Higgs-doublet models which has a global U(1) symmetry in the quartic terms. We find constraints on the parameters of the potential from the considerations of unitarity of scattering amplitudes, the global stability of the potential and the $ρ$-parameter. We concentrate on the spectrum of the non-standard scalar masses in the decoupling limit which is preferred by the Higgs data at the LHC. We exhibit charged-Higgs induced contributions to the diphoton decay width of the 125\,GeV Higgs boson and its correlation with the corresponding $Zγ$ width.

New Physics in the Flavour Sector in the presence of Flavour Changing Neutral Currents

Flavour-Changing-Neutral-Currents (FCNC) play an important r\^ ole in testing the Standard Model (SM) while probing the possibility of having New Physics beyond the SM. In the SM, FCNC are forbidden at three level, but arise through calculable one-loop contributions. We review some of the features of FCNC in two examples of minimal extensions of the SM. In the first example, we consider an extension of the SM consisting of the addition of one vector-like quark either of the up-type ($Q=2/3$) or the down type ($Q=- 1/3$). In this extension there are non-vanishing but naturally suppressed Z-mediated FCNC at tree level. In the second example, we discuss extensions of the SM with two Higgs doublets, without the assumption of natural flavour conservation, giving rise to Higgs mediated FCNC. The existence of strict experimental limits on processes sensitive to Higgs FCNC requires a strong suppression of these currents. We present scenarios resulting from discrete symmetries where all new flavour structures in the quark sector are parametrized by elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, together with the ratio of vacuum expectation values of the Higgs doublets in the Higgs basis defined by the symmetry. We extend these scenarios to the leptonic sector with the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix playing a r\^ ole similar to the CKM matrix in the quark sector.

Invariants and Flavour in the General Two-Higgs Doublet Model

The flavour structure of the general Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is analysed and a detailed study of the parameter space is presented, showing that flavour mixing in the 2HDM can be parametrized by various unitary matrices which arise from the misalignment in flavour space between pairs of various Hermitian flavour matrices which can be constructed within the model. This is entirely analogous to the generation of the CKM matrix in the Standard Model (SM). We construct weak basis invariants which can give insight into the physical implications of any flavour model, written in an arbitrary weak basis (WB) in the context of 2HDM. We apply this technique to two special cases, models with MFV and models with NNI structures. In both cases non-trivial CP-odd WB invariants arise in a mass power order much smaller than what one encounters in the SM, which can have important implications for baryogenesis in the framework of the general 2HDM.

Theory and phenomenology of two-Higgs-doublet models

We discuss theoretical and phenomenological aspects of two-Higgs-doublet extensions of the Standard Model. In general, these extensions have scalar mediated flavour changing neutral currents which are strongly constrained by experiment. Various strategies are discussed to control these flavour changing scalar currents and their phenomenological consequences are analysed. In particular, scenarios with natural flavour conservation are investigated, including the so-called type I and type II models as well as lepton-specific and inert models. Type III models are then discussed, where scalar flavour changing neutral currents are present at tree level, but are suppressed by either specific ansatze for the Yukawa couplings or by the introduction of family symmetries. We also consider the phenomenology of charged scalars in these models. Next we turn to the role of symmetries in the scalar sector. We discuss the six symmetry-constrained scalar potentials and their extension into the fermion sector. The vacuum structure of the scalar potential is analysed, including a study of the vacuum stability conditions on the potential and its renormalization-group improvement. The stability of the tree level minimum of the scalar potential in connection with electric charge conservation and its behaviour under CP is analysed. The question of CP violation is addressed in detail, including the cases of explicit CP violation and spontaneous CP violation. We present a detailed study of weak basis invariants which are odd under CP. A careful study of spontaneous CP violation is presented, including an analysis of the conditions which have to be satisfied in order for a vacuum to violate CP. We present minimal models of CP violation where the vacuum phase is sufficient to generate a complex CKM matrix, which is at present a requirement for any realistic model of spontaneous CP violation.

Two-Higgs Leptonic Minimal Flavour Violation

We construct extensions of the Standard Model with two Higgs doublets, where there are flavour changing neutral currents both in the quark and leptonic sectors, with their strength fixed by the fermion mixing matrices $V_{CKM}$ and $V_{PMNS}$. These models are an extension to the leptonic sector of the class of models previously considered by Branco, Grimus and Lavoura, for the quark sector. We consider both the cases of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and identify the minimal discrete symmetry required in order to implement the models in a natural way.

Minimal Flavour Violation and Multi-Higgs Models

We propose an extension of the hypothesis of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) to general multi-Higgs Models without the assumption of Natural Flavour Conservation in the Higgs sector. We study in detail under what conditions the neutral Higgs couplings are only functions of $V_{CKM}$ and propose a MFV expansion for the neutral Higgs couplings to fermions.

Resonant leptogenesis and tribimaximal leptonic mixing with A4 symmetry

We investigate the viability of thermal leptogenesis in type-I seesaw models with leptonic flavour symmetries that lead to tribimaximal neutrino mixing. We consider an effective theory with an A4 x Z3 x Z4 symmetry, which is spontaneously broken at a scale much higher than the electroweak scale. At the high scale, leptonic Yukawa interactions lead to exact tribimaximal mixing and the heavy Majorana neutrino mass spectrum is exactly degenerate. In this framework, leptogenesis becomes viable once this degeneracy is lifted either by renormalization group effects or by a soft breaking of the A4 symmetry. The implications for low-energy neutrino physics are discussed.

Leptogenesis and Low-energy Observables

We address the question of how to establish a connection between leptogenesis and low energy observables. We emphasize that such a connection only exists in the framework of flavour models. A particular example is the case of texture zeros in some of the Yukawa couplings.

Building the full PMNS Matrix from six independent Majorana-type phases

In the framework of three light Majorana neutrinos, we show how to reconstruct, through the use of 3 x 3 unitarity, the full PMNS matrix from six independent Majorana-type phases. In particular, we express the strength of Dirac-type CP violation in terms of these Majorana-type phases by writing the area of the unitarity triangles in terms of these phases. We also study how these six Majorana phases appear in CP-odd weak basis invariants as well as in leptonic asymmetries relevant for flavoured leptogenesis.

Four Zero Neutrino Yukawa Textures in the Minimal Seesaw Framework

We investigate, within the Type I seesaw framework, the physical implications of zero textures in the Yukawa couplings which generate the neutrino Dirac mass matrix $m_D$. It is shown that four is the maximal number of texture zeroes compatible with the observed leptonic mixing and the assumption that no neutrino mass vanishes. We classify all allowed four-zero textures of $m_D$ into two categories with three classes each. We show that the different classes, in general, admit CP violation both at low and high energies. We further present the constraints obtained for low energy physics in each case. The r\^ ole of these zero textures in establishing a connection between leptogenesis and low energy data is analysed in detail. It is shown that it is possible in all cases to completely specify the parameters relevant for leptogenesis in terms of light neutrino masses and leptonic mixing together with the unknown heavy neutrino masses.

Flavour physics of leptons and dipole moments

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

Nondecoupling of Heavy Fermions and a Special Yukawa Texture

Talk based on work entitled ``Yukawa textures, new physics and nondecoupling,'' done in collaboration with G. C. Branco and J. I. Silva-Marcos, arXiv:hep-ph/0612252, to appear in Phys. Rev. D. In this work we pointed out that New Physics can play an important r\^ ole in rescuing some of the Yukawa texture zero ans\" atze which would otherwise be eliminated by the recent, more precise measurements of $V_{CKM}$. We have shown that the presence of an isosinglet vector-like quark which mixes with standard quarks, can render viable a particularly interesting four texture zero Yukawa ansatz. The crucial point is the nondecoupling of the effects of the isosinglet quark, even for arbitrary large values of its mass.

Yukawa Textures, New Physics and Nondecoupling

We point out that New Physics can play an important r\^ ole in rescuing some of the Yukawa texture zero ans\" atze which would otherwise be eliminated by the recent, more precise measurements of $V_{CKM}$. As an example, a detailed analysis of a four texture zero ansatz is presented, showing how the presence of an isosinglet vector-like quark which mixes with standard quarks, can render viable this Yukawa texture. The crucial point is the nondecoupling of the effects of the isosinglet quark, even for arbitrary large values of its mass.
