A Monomer Mott Insulator (BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)$_2$]$_2$ as a Potential Nodal Line System

We report the band structure calculations and the experimental results of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility in a spin-1/2 (BEDT-TTF)$^{\bullet +}$ monomer Mott insulator (BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)$_2$]$_2$. The band calculations indicate a Dirac semimetal state with nodal lines at the Fermi level. The resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility as functions of temperature are well interpreted in terms of the monomer Mott insulating state instead of the expected semimetal state probably owing to strong electron correlation. In addition, we find that an Arrhenius-type steep reduction of the paramagnetic susceptibility appears below approximately 25 K, which indicates a spin-singlet ground state.

Influence of Se doping in recently synthesized NaInS2-xSex solid solutions for potential thermo-mechanical applications studied via first-principles method

In the present work, the structural and hitherto unexplored thermal and mechanical properties of NaInS2-xSex (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) compounds have been studied using the density functional theory. Besides, the elastic anisotropy indices and hardnesses of NaInS2-xSex have been investigated as Se content is varied. The mechanical stability of all the compounds under study has been confirmed. The ratio of shear to bulk modulus (G/B) is low suggesting that the NaInS2-xSex (x = 0.5 and 1.5) compounds exhibit damage tolerant (ductility) properties while rest of the compositions are brittle in nature. The predicted hardness (H) values are also influenced with the Se content in the following order: H (NaInSSe) > H (NaInS2) > H (NaInSe2) > H (NaInS1.5Se0.5) > H (NaInS0.5Se1.5). All the anisotropic indices under study indicate that NaInS2-xSex compounds are anisotropic in nature. The Mulliken bond population analysis suggests that the degree of covalency of In-S/Se bonds decreases when S is substituted by Se. The origin of low Debye temperature (ΘD) and low minimum thermal conductivity (Kmin) have been successfully explained by considering the mean atomic weight (M/n) and average bond strength of the compounds. Temperature dependence of heat capacities (Cv, Cp) and linear thermal expansion coefficient (α ) are also estimated using the quasi-harmonic Debye model and discussed. The low values of Kmin, ΘD and α and damage tolerant behavior clearly indicate that the NaInS2-xSex (x = 0.5 and 1.5) compounds can be used as promising thermal barrier coating materials for high temperature applications.

Conventional s-wave superconductivity in BiS2-based NdO0.71F0.29BiS2 revealed by thermal transport measurements

To study the superconducting gap structure of BiS$_2$-based layered compound NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$ ($T$$_{\rm c}$ = 5 K), we measured the thermal conductivity $κ$, which is a sensitive probe of the low-energy quasiparticle spectrum. In the absence of a magnetic field, there is only a very small residual linear term in the thermal conductivity $κ_{0}$/$T$ at $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0, indicating the absence of a residual normal fluid, expected for nodal superconductors. Moreover, the applied magnetic field hardly affects the thermal conductivity in the wide range of the vortex state, indicating the absence of Doppler shifted quasiparticles. These results provide evidence that NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$ is fully gapped superconductor. The obtained gap structure, along with the robustness of the superconductivity against the impurity, suggest a conventional $s$-wave superconducting state in NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$.

Proximity to Fermi-surface topological change in superconducting LaO0.54F0.46BiS2

The electronic structure of nearly optimally-doped novel superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$ (${\it x}$ = 0.46) was investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We clearly observed band dispersions from 2 to 6 eV binding energy and near the Fermi level (${\it E}_{\rm F}$), which are well reproduced by first principles calculations when the spin-orbit coupling is taken into account. The ARPES intensity map near ${\it E}_{\rm F}$ shows a square-like distribution around the $Γ$(Z) point in addition to electronlike Fermi surface (FS) sheets around the X(R) point, indicating that FS of LaO$_{0.54}$F$_{0.46}$BiS$_2$ is in close proximity to the theoretically-predicted topological change.

Checkerboard stripe electronic state on cleaved surface of NdO$_{0.7}$F$_{0.3}$BiS$_{2}$ probed by scanning tunneling microscope

We present scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on a cleaved surface of the recently discovered superconductor NdO$_{0.7}$F$_{0.3}$BiS$_{2}$ with a transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) of 5.1 K.Tunneling spectra at 4.2 K (below $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) and 22 K (above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) show a large spectroscopic gap ($\sim$40 mV), which is inconsistent with the metallic nature demonstrated in bulk measurements. Moreover, we find two interesting real-space electronic features. The first feature is a `checkerboard stripe' electronic state characterized by an alternating arrangement of two types of nanocluster. In one cluster, one-dimensional electronic stripes run along one Bi-Bi direction, whereas, in the other cluster, the stripes run along the other Bi-Bi direction. The second feature is a nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity whose microscopic source seems to be atomic defects on the cleaved surface or dopant F atoms.

Rotational quenching of rotationally-excited H$_2$O in collisions with He

Theoretical rotational quenching cross sections and rate coefficients of ortho- and para-H$_2$O due to collisions with He atoms are presented. The complete angular momentum close-coupling approach as well as the coupled-states approximation for angular momentum decoupling were applied to solve the scattering problem for a large range of rotationally-excited states of water. Results are obtained for quenching from initial levels 1$_{1,0}$, 2$_{1,2}$, 2$_{2,1}$, 3$_{0,3}$, 3$_{1,2}$, 3$_{2,1}$, 4$_{1,4}$, 3$_{3,0}$, and 4$_{2,3}$ of ortho-H$_2$O and from initial levels 1$_{1,1}$, 2$_{0,2}$, 2$_{1,1}$, 2$_{2,0}$, 3$_{1,3}$, 3$_{2,2}$, 4$_{0,4}$, 4$_{1,3}$, and 3$_{3,1}$ of para-H$_2$O for kinetic energies from 10$^{-5}$ to 10$^4$ cm$^{-1}$. State-to-state and total deexcitation cross sections and rate coefficients for temperatures between 0.1 and 3000 K are reported. The present state-to-state rate coefficients are found to be in good agreement with previous results obtained by Green and coworkers at high temperatures, but significant discrepancies are obtained at lower temperatures likely due to differences in the adopted potential energy surfaces. Astrophysical applications of the current rate coefficients are briefly discussed.

Growth of superconducting single-crystalline (Lu, Ca)Ba2Cu3O7-d whiskers

Single-crystalline (Lu, Ca)Ba2Cu3O7-d (Lu(Ca)123) whiskers have been successfully grown using the Te-doping method. X-ray diffraction patterns of Lu(Ca)123 whiskers showed sharp (0 0 l) peaks corresponding to REBa2Cu3O7-d phase (RE = rare earth elements). Transport measurements showed that the superconducting transition occurred at 83 K in the obtained whiskers.

Electrical properties of boron-doped MWNTs synthesized by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition

We have synthesized a large amount of boron-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. The synthesis was carried out in a flask using a methanol solution of boric acid as a source material. The scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy were performed to evaluate the structural properties of the obtained MWNTs. In order to evaluate the electrical properties, temperature dependence of resistivity was measured in an individual MWNTs with four metal electrodes. The Ramman shifts suggest carrier injection into the boron-doped MWNTs, but the resistivity of the MWNTs was high and increased strongly with decreasing temperature. Defects induced by the plasma may cause this enhanced resistivity.

Phonon Softening in Superconducting Diamond

We observe strong softening of optical phonon modes in superconducting (Tc = 4.2 K) boron doped diamond near the Brillouin zone center using inelastic x-ray scattering from a CVD-grown highly oriented sample. The magnitude of the softening, and our observation that it becomes stronger approaching zone center, supports theoretical models suggesting a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism via coupling of optical phonon modes to Fermi surfaces around the zone center. The electron-phonon coupling parameter is determined as approximately lambda= 0.33.

Microscopic Evidence for Evolution of Superconductivity by Effective Carrier Doping in Boron-doped Diamond:11B-NMR study

We have investigated the superconductivity discovered in boron (B)-doped diamonds by means of 11B-NMR on heteroepitaxially grown (111) and (100) films. 11B-NMR spectra for all of the films are identified to arise from the substitutional B(1) site as single occupation and lower symmetric B(2) site substituted as boron+hydrogen(B+H) complex, respectively. A clear evidence is presented that the effective carriers introduced by B(1) substitution are responsible for the superconductivity, whereas the charge neutral B(2) sites does not offer the carriers effectively. The result is also corroborated by the density of states deduced by 1/T1T measurement, indicating that the evolution of superconductivity is driven by the effective carrier introduced by substitution at B(1) site.

Periodic oscillations of flux flow resistance in intrinsic Josephson junctions with various lateral sizes down to a size of non-linear core of Josephson vortex

To investigate in-phase structures (rectangular lattice) of Josephson vortex lattice (JVL) in intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, we fabricated IJJs with various lateral sizes down to a size of non-linear core of Josephson vortex using focused-ion-beam etching and measured flux flow resistance (RFF) with in-plane magnetic fields (H). We have found that above a size-independent critical field, the critical current shows Fraunhofer pattern in narrow-length IJJs (0.29-2.77 mm), and then the RFF~H oscillates with H0 period. Most strikingly, such oscillations become pulse-like in sub-micron IJJs, indicating that between the pulses, the rectangular JVLs become major structures.

Periodic Oscillations of Josephson-Vortex Flow Resistance in Oxygen-Deficient Y1Ba2Cu3Ox

We measured the Josephson vortex flow resistance as a function of magnetic field applied parallel to the ab-planes using annealed Y1Ba2Cu3Ox intrinsic Josephson junctions having high anisotropy (around 40) by oxygen content reduction. Periodic oscillations were observed in magnetic fields above 45-58 kOe, corresponding to dense-dilute boundary for Josephson vortex lattice. The observed period of oscillations, agrees well with the increase of one fluxon per two junctions ($H_{p}$\textit{=$Φ$}$_{0}$\textit{/2Ls}), may correspond to formation of a triangular lattice of Josephson vortices as has been reported by Ooi et al. for highly anisotropic (larger than 200) Bi-2212 intrinsic Josephson junctions.

Observation of superconducting gap in boron-doped diamond by laser-excited photoemission spectroscopy

We have investigated the low energy electronic state of a boron-doped diamond thin film by the ultrahigh resolution laser-excited photoemission spectroscopy. We observed a clear shift of the leading edge below 11 K indicative of a superconducting gap opening ($Δ\sim 0.78$ meV at 4.5 K). The gap feature is significantly broad and the well-defined quasiparticle peak is not recognizable even at the lowest temperature of measurement 4.5 K. We discuss our result in terms of possible disorder effect on superconductivity in this system.

A swollen phase observed between the liquid-crystalline phase and the interdigitated phase induced by pressure and/or adding ethanol in DPPC aqueous solution

A swollen phase, in which the mean repeat distance of lipid bilayers is larger than the other phases, is found between the liquid-crystalline phase and the interdigitated gel phase in DPPC aqueous solution. Temperature, pressure and ethanol concentration dependences of the structure were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering, and a bending rigidity of lipid bilayers was by neutron spin echo. The nature of the swollen phase is similar to the anomalous swelling reported previously. However, the temperature dependence of the mean repeat distance and the bending rigidity of lipid bilayers are different. This phase could be a precursor to the interdigitated gel phase induced by pressure and/or adding ethanol.

Low-energy electrodynamics of superconducting diamond

Heavily-boron-doped diamond films become superconducting with critical temperatures $T_c$ well above 4 K. Here we first measure the reflectivity of such a film down to 5 cm$^{-1}$, by also using Coherent Synchrotron Radiation. We thus determine the optical gap, the field penetration depth, the range of action of the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule, and the electron-phonon spectral function. We conclude that diamond behaves as a dirty BCS superconductor.

Fiske steps studied with flux-flow resistance oscillation in a narrow stack of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d junctions

We have experimentally investigated the fluxon dynamics in a narrow Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d stack with junction length L~1.8 um. As an evidence of high-frequency excitation by a collective cavity mode, under an (in-plane) external magnetic field, the current-voltage characteristics show prominent Fiske steps with the corresponding resonance frequencies of 75-305 GHz. Further study of flux-flow resistance oscillation with various c-axis currents clarifies the correlation with Fiske steps by distinguishing two different regions i.e., static flux-flow region at low bias current level and dynamic Fiske step region at high bias current level.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling in a d-wave high-Tc superconductor

There is a wide recognition that Josephson-junction-like structures intrinsic to the layered cuprate high temperature superconductors offer an attractive stage for exploiting possible applications to new quantum technologies. On the other hand the low energy quasiparticle excitations characteristically present in these d-wave superconductors may easily destruct the coherence required. Here we demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of macroscopic quantum tunneling in the intrinsic Josephson junctions of a high temperature superconductor, and find it to be characterized by a high classic-to-quantum crossover temperature and a relatively weak quasiparticle dissipation.

Superconductivity in CVD Diamond Thin Film Well-Above Liquid Helium Temperature

Diamond has always been adored as a jewel. Even more fascinating is its outstanding physical properties; it is the hardest material known in the world with the highest thermal conductivity. Meanwhile, when we turn to its electrical properties, diamond is a rather featureless electrical insulator. However, with boron doping, it becomes a p-type semiconductor, with boron acting as a charge acceptor. Therefore the recent news of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond synthesized by high pressure sintering was received with considerable surprise. Opening up new possibilities for diamond-based electrical devices, a systematic investigation of these phenomena clearly needs to be achieved. Here we show unambiguous evidence of superconductivity in a diamond thin film deposited by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Furthermore the onset of the superconducting transition is found to be 7.4K, which is higher than the reported value in ref(7) and well above helium liquid temperature. This finding establishes the superconductivity to be a universal property of boron-doped diamond, demonstrating that device application is indeed a feasible challenge.
