First demonstration of emulsion multi-stage shifter for accelerator neutrino experiment in J-PARC T60

We describe the first ever implementation of an emulsion multi-stage shifter in an accelerator neutrino experiment. The system was installed in the neutrino monitor building in J-PARC as a part of a test experiment T60 and stable operation was maintained for a total of 126.6 days. By applying time information to emulsion films, various results were obtained. Time resolutions of 5.3 to 14.7 s were evaluated in an operation spanning 46.9 days (time resolved numbers of 3.8--1.4$\times10^{5}$). By using timing and spatial information, a reconstruction of coincident events that consisted of high multiplicity events and vertex events, including neutrino events was performed. Emulsion events were matched to events observed by INGRID, one of near detectors of the T2K experiment, with high reliability (98.5\%) and hybrid analysis was established via use of the multi-stage shifter. The results demonstrate that the multi-stage shifter is feasible for use in neutrino experiments.

Nonlinear electron-phonon coupling in doped manganites

We employ time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction to study the melting of charge order and the associated insulator-metal transition in the doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ after resonant excitation of a high-frequency infrared-active lattice mode. We find that the charge order reduces promptly and highly nonlinearly as function of excitation fluence. Density functional theory calculations suggest that direct anharmonic coupling between the excited lattice mode and the electronic structure drive these dynamics, highlighting a new avenue of nonlinear phonon control.

Alternative Approach to Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics on a Curved Space

Starting with the first-order singular Lagrangian containing the redundant variables, the noncommutative quantum mechanics on a curved space is investigated by the constraint star-product quantization formalism of the projection operator method. Imposing the additional constraints to eliminate the reduntant degrees of freedom, the noncommutative quantum system with noncommutativity among the coordinates on the curved space is exactly constructed. Then, it is shown that the resultant Hamiltonian contains the quantum corrections in the exact form. We further discuss the additional constraints to realize the noncommutativities both of coordinates and momenta on the curved space.

Spin nematic susceptibility studied by inelastic neutron scattering in FeSe

Mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in FeSe has been intensely scrutinized recently because of a variety of exotic properties unprecedented for other iron-based superconductors. A central unanswered question concerns the origin of the interaction that causes the nematic transition at $T_s=90\,K$ without accompanying magnetic order. Elucidating the nature of spin excitations in the normal state is a key to addressing this issue. Here we report, from inelastic neutron-scattering measurements in FeSe single crystals, that high-energy spin excitation spectra of FeSe exhibit characteristic energy dependence with missing intensity at around 70-80$\,$meV, which are very different from other iron-based superconductors. Despite of the strongest electron correlations among the iron-based superconductor family, the spectra are qualitatively at variance with the local moment model and can be essentially described by the itinerant electron picture. Moreover, the dynamical spin susceptibility above $T_s$ is only weakly temperature dependent, which is in stark contrast to the Curie-Weiss behavior of the electronic nematic susceptibility, suggesting that the nematic transition is not likely driven by spin but by orbital degrees of freedom.

Determination of the muon charge sign with the dipolar spectrometers of the OPERA experiment

The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the direct appearance of $ν_τ$ in the CNGS $ν_μ$ beam. Two large muon magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the $τ$ leptonic decay and in $ν_μ^{CC}$ interactions by measuring their charge and momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the $τ$ decays, background resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in $ν_μ^{CC}$ interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are presented. Comparison with a method where no matching is used shows a significant reduction of up to 40\% of the fraction of wrongly determined charges.

NEWS: Nuclear Emulsions for WIMP Search

Nowadays there is compelling evidence for the existence of dark matter in the Universe. A general consensus has been expressed on the need for a directional sensitive detector to confirm, with a complementary approach, the candidates found in conventional searches and to finally extend their sensitivity beyond the limit of neutrino-induced background. We propose here the use of a detector based on nuclear emulsions to measure the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils. The production of nuclear emulsion films with nanometric grains is established. Several measurement campaigns have demonstrated the capability of detecting sub-micrometric tracks left by low energy ions in such emulsion films. Innovative analysis technologies with fully automated optical microscopes have made it possible to achieve the track reconstruction for path lengths down to one hundred nanometers and there are good prospects to further exceed this limit. The detector concept we propose foresees the use of a bulk of nuclear emulsion films surrounded by a shield from environmental radioactivity, to be placed on an equatorial telescope in order to cancel out the effect of the Earth rotation, thus keeping the detector at a fixed orientation toward the expected direction of galactic WIMPs. We report the schedule and cost estimate for a one-kilogram mass pilot experiment, aiming at delivering the first results on the time scale of six years.

Helical magnetic fields in the M87 jet at arc-second scales

We investigate the magnetic field configuration of the M87 jet at arc-second scales by using archival polarimetric VLA data at 8, 15, 22 and 43 GHz. By stacking images over three years in order to enhance the sensitivity, we reveal, for the first time, systematic transverse gradients of the Faraday rotation measure in several knots along the jet. Combining this result with polarization properties and the dynamics of the jet, we suggest the magnetic structure in several knots at kiloparsec scales consists of a systematically wrapped, tightly wound helical configuration. Our analysis brings us a new paradigm where the M87 jet is a fundamentally current carrying system produced in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole, transferring a huge amount of the electromagnetic energy over the host galaxy scale.

Discovery of tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment was designed to search for $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. by detecting the $τ$-leptons produced in charged current $ν_τ$ interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a sub-sample of the data, was previously reported. In this paper, a fifth $ν_τ$ candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow assessing the discovery of $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5 $σ$.

Thermal generation of spin current in an antiferromagnet

Longitudinal spin Seebeck effect has been investigated for an uniaxial antiferromagnetic insulator Cr2O3, characterized by a spin-flop transition under magnetic field along the c-axis. We have found that temperature gradient applied normal to Cr2O3/Pt interface induces inverse spin Hall voltage of spin current origin in Pt, whose magnitude turns out to be always proportional to magnetization in Cr2O3. The observed voltage shows significant enhancement for the lower temperature region, which can be ascribed to the phonon-drag effect on the relevant spin excitations. The above results establish that antiferromagnetic spin waves with high frequency above 100 GHz can be an effective carrier of spin current.

Unified Description of Quantum Mechanics on a Curved Space

Starting with the first-order singular Lagrangian, the problem of the quantization of a dynamical system constrained to a submanifold embedded in the higher-dimensional Euclidean space is investigated within the framework of operatorial quantization formalism. Through the projection operator method (POM) with the constraint star-products, it is shown that both of the constraint quantum system with the usual constraint and that with the derivative-type constraint are naturally constructed from one Lagarangian. It is proved that the system with the usual constraint is the sub-system of that with the derivative-type one. Furthermore, the quantization of the dynamical system subject to both of the usual constraint and the derivative-type one is investigated by the POM, and the quantum corrections in the resultant Hamiltonians are discussed.

Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics on a Curved Space

Starting with the first-order singular Lagrangian, the canonical structures of the noncommutative quantum system on a submanifold embedded in the higher-dimensional Euclidean space are investigated with the projection operator method (POM) and the Dirac-bracket formulation in the case of the derivative-type constraint. Using the successive projection procedure and the iterativity of the Dirac bracket, the noncommutative quantum system is constructed in the form including all orders of the noncommutativity-parameters. When the noncommutative quantum system is constrained to a curved space, the commutator algebra of the system is presented within the 1st-order approximation with respect to Dirac-const. and the noncommutativity-parameters.

Limits on muon-neutrino to tau-neutrino oscillations induced by a sterile neutrino state obtained by OPERA at the CNGS beam

The OPERA experiment, exposed to the CERN to Gran Sasso $ν_μ$ beam, collected data from 2008 to 2012. Four oscillated $ν_τ$ Charged Current interaction candidates have been detected in appearance mode, which are consistent with $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillations at the atmospheric $Δm^2$ within the "standard" three-neutrino framework. In this paper, the OPERA $ν_τ$ appearance results are used to derive limits on the mixing parameters of a massive sterile neutrino.

Canonical Structure of Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics as Constraint System

Starting with the first-order singular Lagrangian, the canonical structure in the noncommutative quantum mechanics with the noncommutativities both of coordinates and momenta is investgated. Using the projection operator method (POM) for the constraint systems and the constraint star-product, the noncommutative quantum system is constructed and the commutator algebra of {\it projected} canonically conjugate set(CCS) of the system is derived in the form including all orders of the noncommutativity parameters. We discuss the alternative CCS, which obeys the ordinary noncommutative commutator algebra. The {\it exact} CCS is constructed in the framework of the POM, and which is shown to be equivalent to the CCS constructed through the Seiberg-Witten map and the Bopp shift. We further discess the alternative Lagrangian to realize the noncommutativities both of coordinates and momenta.

Star-product Description of Quantization in Second-class Constraint Systems

The quantization of the second-class constraint systems is discussed within the projection operator method(POM) of constraint systems. Through the nonlocal representation of the constraint hyper-operators, new star-products are defined. Then, the projected operator-algebra of the quantized constraint systems is constructed with these star-products, and it is shown that the commutators and symmetrized products among the projected operators contain the quantum corrections due to the noncommutativity among operators.

Observation of nu_tau appearance in the CNGS beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment is searching for nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations in appearance mode i.e. via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu_tau charged current interactions. The evidence of nu_mu -> nu_tau appearance has been previously reported with three nu_tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu_tau candidate event, with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of analysed events and the low background, nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations are established with a significance of 4.2sigma.

Greenland Telescope Project --- Direct Confirmation of Black Hole with Sub-millimeter VLBI

A 12-m diameter radio telescope will be deployed to the Summit Station in Greenland to provide direct confirmation of a Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) by observing its shadow image in the active galaxy M87. The telescope (Greenland Telescope: GLT) is to become one of the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) stations at sub-millimeter (submm) regime, providing the longest baseline > 9,000 km to achieve an exceptional angular resolution of 20 micro arc sec at 350 GHz, which will enable us to resolve the shadow size of ~40 micro arc sec. The triangle with the longest baselines formed by the GLT, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, and the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in Hawaii will play a key role for the M87 observations. We have been working on the image simulations based on realistic conditions for a better understanding of the possible observed images. In parallel, retrofitting of the telescope and the site developments are in progress. Based on three years of opacity monitoring at 225 GHz, our measurements indicate that the site is excellent for submm observations, comparable to the ALMA site. The GLT is also expected to make single-dish observations up to 1.5 THz.

Procedure for short-lived particle detection in the OPERA experiment and its application to charm decays

The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the $τ$ leptons produced in $ν_τ$ charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect $τ$ particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail. The results of its application to the search for charmed hadrons are then presented as a validation of the methods for $ν_τ$ appearance detection.

An exact representation isotropic and anisotropic noncommutative phase spaces, and their relations

Noncommutative phase space of an arbitrary dimension is considered. The both of operators coordinates and momenta in noncommutative phase space may be noncommutative. In this paper, we introduce momentum-momentum noncommutativity in addition to coordinate-coordinate noncommutativity. We find an exact form for the linear coordinate transformation which relates a noncommutative phase space to the corresponding ordinary one. As an example, the Hamiltonian of a three-dimensional harmonic oscillator is examined.
