Morphology and dynamics of Venus's middle clouds with Akatsuki/IR1

The Venusian atmosphere is covered by clouds with super-rotating winds whose accelerating mechanism is still not well understood. The fastest winds, occurring at the cloud tops ($\sim$70 km height), have been studied for decades thanks to their visual contrast in dayside ultraviolet images. The middle clouds ($\sim$50-55 km) can be observed at near-infrared wavelengths (800-950 nm), although with very low contrast. Here we present the first extensive analysis of their morphology and motions at lower latitudes along 2016 with 900-nm images from the IR1 camera onboard Akatsuki. The middle clouds exhibit hemispherical asymmetries every 4-5 days, sharp discontinuities in elongated "hook-like" stripes, and large contrasts (3-21%) probably associated with large changes in the optical thickness. Zonal winds obtained with IR1 images and with ground-based observations reveal mean zonal winds peaking at the equator, while their combination with Venus Express unveils long-term variations of 20 m s$^{-1}$ along 10 years.

The Infrared Astronomical Mission AKARI

AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. These will become an additional future heritage of this mission.

Wide-Area Mapping of 155 Micron Continuum Emission from the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex

We present the results of a wide-area mapping of the far-infrared continuum emission toward the Orion complex by using a Japanese balloon-borne telescope. The 155-um continuum emission was detected over a region of 1.5 deg^2 around the KL nebula with 3' resolution similar to that of the IRAS 100-um map. Assuming a single-temperature model of the thermal equilibrium dust, maps of the temperature and the optical depth were derived from the 155 um intensity and the IRAS 100 um intensity. The derived dust temperature is 5 - 15 K lower and the derived dust optical thickness were derived from the 155-um intensity and the IRAS 100-um intensity. The derived dust temperature is 5 - 15 K lower and the derived dust optical depth is 5 - 300 times larger than those derived from the IRAS 60 and 100-um intensities due to the significant contribution of the statistically heated very small grains to the IRAS 60-um intensity. The optical-thickness distribution shows a filamentary dust ridge that has a 1.5 degrees extent in the north - south direction and well resembles the Integral-Shaped Filament (ISF) molecular gas distribution. The gas-to-dust ratio derived from the CO molecular gas distribution along the ISF is in the range 30 - 200, which may be interpreted as being an effect of CO depletion due to the photodissociation and/or the freezing on dust grains.

Anisotropic phonon conduction and lattice distortions in CMR-type bilayer manganite (La$_{1-z}$Pr$_{z}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (z=0,0.2,0.4 and 0.6) single crystals

We have undertaken a systematic study of thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field of single crystals of the compound (La$_{1-z}$Pr$_{z}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ for $z$(Pr) =0.2,0.4. and 0.6. The lattice distortion due to Pr-substitution and anisotropic thermal conductivity in bilayer manganites are discussed on the basis of different relaxation models of local lattice distortions in metal and insulating states proposed by Maderda et al. The giant magnetothermal effect is scaled as a function of magnetization and discussed on the basis of a systematic variation of the occupation of the $e_g$-electron orbital states due to Pr-substitution.

The stability of the shell of D6-D2 branes in a ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity solution

The stability of the shell of wrapped D6-branes on K3 is investigated from the point of view of supergravity. We first construct an effective energy-momentum tensor for the shell under the reasonable conditions and show that supersymmetric solutions satisfy Israel's junction conditions at arbitrary radius of the shell. Next we study the perturbation of the whole system including the self-gravity of the shell. It is found that in spite of the existence of wrapped D6-branes with negative tension, there is no eigenmode whose frequencies of the shell and the fields are imaginary numbers, at any radius of the shell. Furthermore, when the radius of the shell is less than the enhançon radius, resonances are produced, and this indicates a kind of ``instability'' of the system. This can even classically explain why the shell is constructed at the enhançon radius.

No-scalar hair conjecture in asymptotic de-Sitter spacetime

We discuss the no-hair conjecture in the presence of a cosmological constant. For the firststep the real scalar field is considered as the matter field and the spacetime is assumed to be static spherically symmetric. If the scalar field is massless or has a convex potential such as a mass term, it is proved that there is no regular black hole solution. For a general positive potential, we search for black hole solutions which support the scalar field with a double well potential, and find them by numerical calculations. The existence of such solutions depends on the values of the vacuum expectation value and the self-coupling constant of the scalar field. When we take the zero horizon radius limit, the solution becomes a boson star like solution which we found before. However new solutions are found to be unstable against the linear perturbation. As a result we can conclude that the no-scalar hair conjecture holds in the case of scalar fields with a convex or double well potential.
