Classification of fetal compromise during labour: signal processing and feature engineering of the cardiotocograph

Cardiotocography (CTG) is the main tool used for fetal monitoring during labour. Interpretation of CTG requires dynamic pattern recognition in real time. It is recognised as a difficult task with high inter- and intra-observer disagreement. Machine learning has provided a viable path towards objective and reliable CTG assessment. In this study, novel CTG features are developed based on clinical expertise and system control theory using an autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) model to characterise the response of the fetal heart rate to contractions. The features are evaluated in a machine learning model to assess their efficacy in identifying fetal compromise. ARMA features ranked amongst the top features for detecting fetal compromise. Additionally, including clinical factors in the machine learning model and pruning data based on a signal quality measure improved the performance of the classifier.

Demonstration of an 8D Modulation Format with Reduced Inter-Channel Nonlinearities in a Polarization Multiplexed Coherent System

We demonstrate a polarization-managed 8-dimensional modulation format that is time domain coded to reduce inter-channel nonlinearity. Simulation results show a 2.33 dB improvement in maximum net system margin (NSM) relative to polarization multiplexed (PM)-BPSK, and a 1.0 dB improvement relative to time interleaved return to zero (RZ)-PM-BPSK, for a five channel fill propagating on 20x80 km spans of 90% compensated ELEAF. In contrast to the other modulations considered, the new 8-dimentional (8D) format has negligible sensitivity to the polarization states of the neighboring channels. Laboratory results from High-density WDM (HD-WDM) propagation experiments on a 5000 km dispersion-managed link show a 1 dB improvement in net system margin relative to PM-BPSK.

Growth and characterization of heteroepitaxial La-substituted BaSnO$_3$ films on SrTiO$_3$ (001) and SmScO$_3$ (110) substrates

Heteroepitaxial growth of BaSnO$_3$ (BSO) and Ba$_{1-x}$La$_x$SnO$_3$ (x = 7 %) (LBSO) thin films on different perovskite single crystal (SrTiO$_3$ (001) and SmScO$_3$ (110)) substrates has been achieved by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) under optimized deposition conditions. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that the films on either of these substrates are relaxed due to the large mismatch and present a high degree of crystallinity with narrow rocking curves and smooth surface morphology while analytical quantification by proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE) confirms the stoichiometric La transfer from a polyphasic target, producing films with La contents above the bulk solubility limit. The films show degenerate semiconducting behavior on both substrates, with the observed room temperature resistivities, Hall mobilities and carrier concentrations of 4.4 $m Ωcm$, 10.11 $cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$, and 1.38 $\cdot 10^{20} cm^{-3}$ on SmScO$_3$ and 7.8 $m Ωcm$, 5.8 $cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$, and 1.36 $\cdot 10^{20} cm^{-3}$ on SrTiO$_3$ ruling out any extrinsic contribution from the substrate. The superior electrical properties observed on the SmScO3 substrate are attributed to reduction in dislocation density from the lower lattice mismatch.
