Phase-separated Ferromagnetism in Spin-imbalanced Fermi Atoms Loaded on an Optical Ladder: a DMRG study

We consider repulsively-interacting cold fermionic atoms loaded on an optical ladder lattice in a trapping potential. The density-matrix renormalization-group method is used to numerically calculate the ground state for systematically varied values of interaction U and spin imbalance p in the Hubbard model on the ladder. The system exhibits rich structures, where a fully spin polarized phase, spatially separated from other domains in the trapping potential, appears for large enough U and p. The phase-separated ferromagnetism can be captured as a real-space image of the energy gap between the ferromagnetic and other states arising from a combined effect of Nagaoka's ferromagnetism extended to the ladder and the density dependence of the energy separation between competing states. We also predict how to maximize the ferromagnetic region.

Derivation of non-Markoffian transport equations for trapped cold atoms in nonequilibrium thermal field theory

The non-Markoffian transport equations for the systems of cold Bose atoms confined by a external potential both without and with a Bose-Einstein condensate are derived in the framework of nonequilibrium thermal filed theory (Thermo Field Dynamics). Our key elements are an explicit particle representation and a self-consistent renormalization condition which are essential in thermal field theory. The non-Markoffian transport equation for the non-condensed system, derived at the two-loop level, is reduced in the Markoffian limit to the ordinary quantum Boltzmann equation derived in the other methods. For the condensed system, we derive a new transport equation with an additional collision term which becomes important in the Landau instability.

Extended Thermodynamic Relation and Fluctuation Theorem in Stochastic Dynamics with Time Reversed Process

We consider a stochastic model described by two stochastic differential equations of motion; one is for the stochastic evolution forward in time and the other for backward in time. We further introduce averaged quantities for the two processes and construct the extended thermodynamic relation following the strategy of Sekimoto. By using this relation, we derive the fluctuation theorems such as the Seifert relation, the Jarzynski relation and the Komatsu-Nakagawa non-equilibrium steady state with respect to the introduced averaged quantities.

Polarization Plateau in Atomic Fermi Gas Loaded on Triangular Optical Lattice

In order to demonstrate that atomic Fermi gas is a good experimental reality in studying unsolved problems in frustrated interacting-spin systems, we numerically examine the Mott core state emerged by loading two-component atomic Fermi gases on triangular optical lattices. Consequently, we find that plateau like structures are observable in the Mott core polarization as a function of the population imbalance. These plateau states are caused by a flexibility that the surrounding metallic region absorbs the excess imbalance to keep the plateau states inside the Mott core. We also find spin patterns peculiar to the plateau states inside the Mott core.

Mott Phase in Polarized Two-component Atomic Fermi Lattice Gas:A Playground for S=1/2 Heisenberg Model in Magnetic Field

We investigate effects of pseudo-spin population imbalance on Mott phases in 1D trapped two-component atomic Fermi gases loaded on optical lattices based on the repulsive Hubbard model in harmonic traps. By using the density matrix renormalization group method, we numerically calculate density profiles of each component and clarify the pseudo-spin magnetism. Consequently, we find that all the features from weakly imbalance to fully polarized cases are well described by S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain under magnetic field. These results indicate that the Mott phases offer experimental stages for studying various interacting spin systems.

Hole Localization in One-Dimensional Doped Anderson-Hubbard Model

We study the interplay of disorder and correlation in the one-dimensional hole-doped Hubbard-model with disorder (Anderson-Hubbard model) by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Concentrating on the doped-hole density profile, we find in a large $U/t$ regime that the clean system exhibits a simple fluid-like behavior whereas finite disorders create locally Mott regions which expand their area with increasing the disorder strength contrary to the ordinary sense. We propose that such an anomalous Mott phase formation assisted by disorder is observable in atomic Fermi gases by setup of the box shape trap.

Magnetism Localization in Spin-Polarized One-Dimensional Anderson-Hubbard Model

In order to study an interplay of disorder, correlation, and spin imbalance on antiferromagnetism, we systematically explore the ground state of one-dimensional spin-imbalanced Anderson-Hubbard model by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that disorders localize the antiferromagnetic spin density wave induced by imbalanced fermions and the increase of the disorder magnitude shrinks the areas of the localized antiferromagnetized regions. Moreover, the antiferromagnetism finally disappears above a large disorder. These behaviors are observable in atomic Fermi gases loaded on optical lattices and disordered strongly-correlated chains under magnetic field.

Correlation Effects on Atom Density Profiles of 1-D and 2-D Polarized Atomic-Fermi-Gas Loaded on Optical Lattice

We investigate effects of optical lattice potential in one- and two-dimensional two-component trapped Fermi gases with population imbalances. Using the exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group methods complementarily, we calculate the atom density profile from the ground state many-body wavefunction as a function of attractive interaction strength for various population imbalances. The numerical results reveal that although a phase separation between the superfluid core and the shell cloud of excess atoms occurs as observed in experiments without the optical lattice, the population imbalance generally remains in the core region in contrast to the non-lattice cases. The essence of the numerical results in a strong attractive regime can be explained by an effective model composed of Cooper pairs and excess major fermions.

Stripe Formation in Fermionic Atoms on 2-D Optical Lattice inside a Box Trap: DMRG Studies for Repulsive Hubbard Model with Open Boundary Condition

We suggest that box shape trap enables to observe intrinsic properties of the repulsive Hubbard model in a fixed doping in contrast to the harmonic trap bringing about spatial variations of atom density profiles. In order to predict atomic density profile under the box trap, we apply the directly-extended density-matrix renormalization group method to 4-leg repulsive Hubbard model with the open boundary condition. Consequently, we find that stripe formation is universal in a low hole doping range and the stripe sensitively changes its structure with variations of $U/t$ and the doping rate. A remarkable change is that a stripe formed by a hole pair turns to one by a bi-hole pair when entering a limited strong $U/t$ range. Furthermore, a systematic calculation reveals that the Hubbard model shows a change from the stripe to the Friedel like oscillation with increasing the doping rate.

Condition for emergence of complex eigenvalues in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations

The condition for the appearance of dynamical instability of the Bose-condensed system, characterized by the emergence of complex eigenvalues in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, is studied analytically. We perturbatively expand both the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with respect to the coupling constant. It is concluded that the degeneracy between a positive-norm eigenmode and a negative-norm one is essential for the emergence of complex modes. Based on the conclusion, we justify the two-mode approximation applied in our previous work [E. Fukuyama \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A {\bf 76}, 043608 (2007)], in which we analytically studied the condition for the existence of complex modes when the condensate has a highly quantized vortex.

Direct Extension of Density-Matrix Renormalization Group toward 2-Dimensional Quantum Lattice Systems: Studies for Parallel Algorithm, Accuracy, and Performance

We parallelize density-matrix renormalization group to directly extend it to 2-dimensional ($n$-leg) quantum lattice models. The parallelization is made mainly on the exact diagonalization for the superblock Hamiltonian since the part requires an enormous memory space as the leg number $n$ increases. The superblock Hamiltonian is divided into three parts, and the correspondent superblock vector is transformed into a matrix, whose elements are uniformly distributed into processors. The parallel efficiency shows a high rate as the number of the states kept $m$ increases, and the eigenvalue converges within only a few sweeps in contrast to the multichain algorithm.

Quantum Field Theoretical Analysis on Unstable Behavior of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates flowing in optical lattices on the basis of quantum field theory. For such a system, a Bose-Einstein condensate shows a unstable behavior which is called the dynamical instability. The unstable system is characterized by the appearance of modes with complex eigenvalues. Expanding the field operator in terms of excitation modes including complex ones, we attempt to diagonalize the unperturbative Hamiltonian and to find its eigenstates. It turns out that although the unperturbed Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable in the conventional bosonic representation the appropriate choice of physical states leads to a consistent formulation. Then we analyze the dynamics of the system in the regime of the linear response theory. Its numerical results are consitent with as those given by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation.

Quantum Field Theoretical Description of Unstable Behavior of Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates with Complex Eigenvalues of Bogoliubov-de Gennes Equations

The Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are used for a number of theoretical works on the trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. These equations are known to give the energies of the quasi-particles when all the eigenvalues are real. We consider the case in which these equations have complex eigenvalues. We give the complete set including those modes whose eigenvalues are complex. The quantum fields which represent neutral atoms are expanded in terms of the complete set. It is shown that the state space is an indefinite metric one and that the free Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable in the conventional bosonic representation. We introduce a criterion to select quantum states describing the metastablity of the condensate, called the physical state conditions. In order to study the instability, we formulate the linear response of the density against the time-dependent external perturbation within the regime of Kubo's linear response theory. Some states, satisfying all the physical state conditions, give the blow-up and damping behavior of the density distributions corresponding to the complex eigenmodes. It is qualitatively consistent with the result of the recent analyses using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
