Early universe dynamics of PQ field with very small self-coupling and its implications for axion dark matter

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are often considered as good candidates for dark matter. Several mechanisms generating relic abundance of ALP dark matter have been proposed. They may involve processes which take place before, during or after cosmic inflation. In all cases an important role is played by the potential of the corresponding Peccei-Quinn (PQ) field. Quite often this potential is assumed to be dominated by a quartic term with a very small coupling. We show that in such situation it is crucial to take into account different kinds of corrections especially in models in which the PQ field evolves during and after inflation. We investigate how such evolution changes due to radiative, thermal and geometric corrections. In many cases those changes are very important and result in strong modifications of the predictions of a model. They may strongly influence the amount of ALP contributions to cold and warm components of dark matter as well as the power spectrum of associated isocurvature perturbations. Models with a quasi-supersymmetric spectrum of particles to which the PQ field couples seem to be especially interesting. Qualitative features of such models are discussed with the help of approximate analytical formulae. However, the dynamics of the PQ field with the considered corrections taken into account is more complicated than in the case without corrections so dedicated numerical calculations are necessary to obtain precise predictions. We present such results for some characteristic benchmark points in the parameter space.

A new way of calculating the effective potential for a light radion

We address again the old problem of calculating the radion effective potential in Randall-Sundrum scenarios, with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. Various prescriptions have been used in the literature, most of them based on heuristic derivations and then applied in some approximations. We define rigorously a light radion 4D effective action by using the interpolating field method. For a given choice of the interpolating field, defined as a functional of 5D fields, the radion effective action is uniquely defined by the procedure of integrating out the other fields, with the constrained 5D equations of motion always satisfied with help of the Lagrange multipliers. Thus, for a given choice of the interpolating fields we obtain a precise prescription for calculating the effective potential. Different choices of the interpolating fields give different prescriptions but in most cases very similar effective potentials. We confirm the correctness of one prescription used so far on a more heuristic basis and also find several new, much more economical, ways of calculating the radion effective potential. Our general considerations are illustrated by several numerical examples. It is shown that in some cases the old methods, especially in models with strong back-reaction, give results which are off even by orders of magnitude. Thus, our results are important e.g. for estimation of critical temperature in phase transitions.

Blind spots for neutralinos in NMSSM with light singlet scalar

A substantial contribution to the SM-like Higgs mass may come from the mixing with the lightest singlet-dominated scalar in NMSSM for moderate or large values of $\tanβ$ [1]. The LSP neutralino in this model may also contain the singlet component - singlino. In this work we analyze the direct detection cross section for a Higgsino-singlino LSP with the emphasis on possible direct detection blind spots in the parameter space. Correlations between the LSP properties and the effects in the Higgs sector coming from the mixing are also discussed.

k-stabilization in brane models

Stabilization of inter-brane distance is analyzed in 5-dimensional models with higher-order scalar kinetic terms. Equations of motion and boundary conditions for background and for scalar perturbations are presented. Conditions sufficient and (with one exception) necessary for stability are derived and discussed. It is shown that it is possible to construct stable brane configurations even without scalar potentials and cosmological constants. As a byproduct we identify a large class of non-standard boundary conditions for which the Sturm-Liouville operator is hermitian.

Volume modulus inflation and a low scale of SUSY breaking

The relation between the Hubble constant and the scale of supersymmetry breaking is investigated in models of inflation dominated by a string modulus. Usually in this kind of models the gravitino mass is of the same order of magnitude as the Hubble constant which is not desirable from the phenomenological point of view. It is shown that slow-roll saddle point inflation may be compatible with a low scale of supersymmetry breaking only if some corrections to the lowest order Kahler potential are taken into account. However, choosing an appropriate Kahler potential is not enough. There are also conditions for the superpotential, and e.g. the popular racetrack superpotential turns out to be not suitable. A model is proposed in which slow-roll inflation and a light gravitino are compatible. It is based on a superpotential with a triple gaugino condensation and the Kahler potential with the leading string corrections. The problem of fine tuning and experimental constraints are discussed for that model.

Generalization of Einstein-Lovelock theory to higher order dilaton gravity

A higher order theory of dilaton gravity is constructed as a generalization of the Einstein-Lovelock theory of pure gravity. Its Lagrangian contains terms with higher powers of the Riemann tensor and of the first two derivatives of the dilaton. Nevertheless, the resulting equations of motion are quasi-linear in the second derivatives of the metric and of the dilaton. This property is crucial for the existence of brane solutions in the thin wall limit. At each order in derivatives the contribution to the Lagrangian is unique up to an overall normalization. Relations between symmetries of this theory and the O(d,d) symmetry of the string-inspired models are discussed.

Radion stabilization with(out) Gauss-Bonnet interactions and inflation

Radion stabilization is analyzed in 5-dimensional models with branes in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet interactions. The Goldberger-Wise mechanism is considered for static and inflating backgrounds. The necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are given for the static case. The influence of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the radion mass and the inter-brane distance is analyzed and illustrated by numerical examples. The interplay between the radion stabilization and the cosmological constant problem is discussed.

Stability of flux compactifications and the pattern of supersymmetry breaking

We extend the KKLT approach to moduli stabilization by including the dilaton and the complex structure moduli into the effective supergravity theory. Decoupling of the dilaton is neither always possible nor necessary for the existence of stable minima with zero (or positive) cosmological constant. The pattern of supersymmetry breaking can be much richer than in the decoupling scenario of KKLT.

Localized anomalies in heterotic orbifolds

Recently spatially localized anomalies have been considered in higher dimensional field theories. The question of the quantum consistency and stability of these theories needs further discussion. Here we would like to investigate what string theory might teach us about theories with localized anomalies. We consider the Z_3 orbifold of the heterotic E_8 x E_8 theory, and compute the anomaly of the gaugino in the presence of Wilson lines. We find an anomaly localized at the fixed points, which depends crucially on the local untwisted spectra at those points. We show that non-Abelian anomalies cancel locally at the fixed points for all Z_3 models with or without additional Wilson lines. At various fixed points different anomalous U(1)s may be present, but at most one at a given fixed point. It is in general not possible to construct one generator which is the sole source of the anomalous U(1)s at the various fixed points.

Localized tadpoles of anomalous heterotic U(1)'s

We investigate the properties of localized anomalous U(1)'s in heterotic string theory on the orbifold T^6/Z_3. We argue that the local four dimensional and original ten dimensional Green-Schwarz mechanisms can be implemented simultaneously, making the theory manifestly gauge invariant everywhere, in the bulk and at the fixed points. We compute the shape of the Fayet-Iliopoulos tadpoles, and cross check this derivation for the four dimensional auxiliary fields by a direct calculation of the tadpoles of the internal gauge fields. Finally we study some resulting consequences for spontaneous symmetry breaking, and derive the profile of the internal gauge field background over the orbifold.

New brane solutions in higher order gravity

We consider the higher order gravity with dilaton and with the leading string theory corrections taken into account. The domain wall type solutions are investigated for arbitrary number of space-time dimensions. The explicit formulae for the fixed points and asymptotic behavior of generic solutions are given. We analyze and classify solutions with finite effective gravitational constant. There is a class of such solutions which have no singularities. We discuss in detail the relation between fine tuning and self tuning and clarify in which sense our solutions are fine-tuning free. The stability of such solutions is also discussed.

Brane induced supersymmetry breakdown and restoration

We investigate the phenomenon of brane induced supersymmetry breakdown on orbifolds in the presence of a Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. General consistency conditions are derived for arbitrary dimensions and the results are illustrated in the specific example of a 5-dimensional theory compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. This includes a discussion of the Kaluza-Klein spectrum and the possibility of a brane induced supersymmetry restoration.

Instabilities of bulk fields and anomalies on orbifolds

Bulk matter modes of higher dimensional models generically become unstable in the presence of additional matter multiplets at the branes. This quantum instability is driven by localized Fayet-Iliopoulos terms that attract the bulk zero modes towards the boundary branes. We study this mechanism in the framework of a 5 dimensional S^1/Z_2 orbifold and give conditions for the various possibilities of localization of (chiral) zero modes. This mechanism is quite relevant for realistic model building, as the standard model contains U(1) hypercharge with potentially localized FI-terms. The analysis is closely related to localized anomalies in higher dimensional gauge theories. Five dimensional gauge invariance of the effective action determines the anomaly constraints and fixes the normalization of Chern-Simons terms. The localization of the bulk modes does not effect the anomaly cancellation globally, but the additional heavy Kaluza-Klein modes of the bulk fields may cancel the Chern-Simons terms. We discuss also the potential appearance of the parity anomaly that might render the construction of some orbifold models inconsistent.

Spontaneous localization of bulk matter fields

We study models compactified on S^1/Z_2 with bulk and brane matter fields charged under U(1) gauge symmetry. We calculate the FI-terms and show by minimizing the resulting potential that supersymmetry or gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken if the sum of the charges does not vanish. Even if this sum vanishes, there could be an instability as a consequence of localized FI-terms. This leads to a spontaneous localization of charged bulk fields on respective branes.

Supersymmetry Breakdown at a Hidden Wall

We consider hidden sector supersymmetry breakdown in the strongly coupled heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ theory of Hořava and Witten. Using effective field theory methods in four dimensions, we can show that gravitational interactions induce soft breaking terms in the observable sector that are of order of the gravitiono mass. We apply these methods to the mechanism of gaugino condensation at the hidden wall. Although the situation is very similar to the weakly coupled case, there is a decisive difference concerning the observable sector gaugino mass; with desirable phenomenological as well as cosmological consequences.

Haggling over the fine-tuning price

We amplify previous discussions of the fine-tuning price to be paid by supersymmetric models in the light of LEP data, especially the lower bound on the Higgs boson mass, studying in particular its power of discrimination between different parameter regions and different theoretical assumptions. The analysis is performed using the full one-loop effective potential. The whole range of $\tanβ$ is discussed, including large values. In the minimal supergravity model with universal gaugino and scalar masses, a small fine-tuning price is possible only for intermediate values of $\tanβ$. However, the fine-tuning price in this region is significantly higher if we require $b-τ$ Yukawa-coupling unification. On the other hand, price reductions are obtained if some theoretical relation between MSSM parameters is assumed, in particular between $μ_0$, $M_{1/2}$ and $A_0$. Significant price reductions are obtained for large $\tanβ$ if non-universal soft Higgs mass parameters are allowed. Nevertheless, in all these cases, the requirement of small fine tuning remains an important constraint on the superpartner spectrum. We also study input relations between MSSM parameters suggested in some interpretations of string theory: the price may depend significantly on these inputs, potentially providing guidance for building string models. However, in the available models the fine-tuning price may not be reduced significantly.

Relic Abundance of Neutralinos in Heterotic String Theory: Weak Coupling vs. Strong Coupling

The relic abundance of stable neutralinos is investigated in $E_8 \times E_8'$ heterotic string theory when supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by hidden-sector gaugino condensates. In the weak coupling regime, very large scalar masses (compared to gaugino masses) are shown to lead to a too large relic abundance of the neutralinos, incompatible with cosmological observations in most of parameter space. The problem does not arise in the strong coupling regime (heterotic M-theory) because there scalar and gaugino masses are generically of the same order of magnitude.

Supersymmetry Breaking and Soft Terms in M-Theory

We investigate gaugino condensation in the framework of the strongly coupled heterotic $E_8 \times E_8$ string (M--theory). Supersymmetry is broken in a hidden sector and gravitational interactions induce soft breaking parameters in the observable sector. The resulting soft masses are of order of the gravitino mass. The situation is similar to that in the weakly coupled $E_8 \times E_8$ theory with one important difference: we avoid the problem of small gaugino masses which are now comparable to the gravitino mass.
