Probing intraband excitations in ZrTe$_5$: a high-pressure infrared and transport study

Zirconium pentatetelluride, ZrTe5, shows remarkable sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure. In this work we address the high-pressure transport and optical properties of this compound, on samples grown by flux and charge vapor transport. The high-pressure resistivity is measured up to 2 GPa, and the infrared transmission up to 9 GPa. The dc conductivity anisotropy is determined using a microstructured sample. Together, the transport and optical measurements allow us to discern band parameters with and without the hydrostatic pressure, in particular the Fermi level, and the effective mass in the less conducting, out-of-plane direction. The results are interpreted within a simple two-band model characterized by a Dirac-like, linear in-plane band dispersion, and a parabolic out-of-plane dispersion.

Two-dimensional conical dispersion in ZrTe5 evidenced by optical spectroscopy

Zirconium pentatelluride was recently reported to be a 3D Dirac semimetal, with a single conical band, located at the center of the Brillouin zone. The cone's lack of protection by the lattice symmetry immediately sparked vast discussions about the size and topological/trivial nature of a possible gap opening. Here we report on a combined optical and transport study of ZrTe5, which reveals an alternative view of electronic bands in this material. We conclude that the dispersion is approximately linear only in the a-c plane, while remaining relatively flat and parabolic in the third direction (along the b axis). Therefore, the electronic states in ZrTe5 cannot be described using the model of 3D Dirac massless electrons, even when staying at energies well above the band gap 6 meV found in our experiments at low temperatures.

Limits of Validity of Rashba Model in BiTeI: A High-field Magneto-optical Study

It was recently shown that BiTeI, a semiconductor with polar crystal structure, possesses a giant spin-splitting of electrons, which has been interpreted in terms of Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. Here, we use high field magneto-optical spectroscopy to quantify the deviations of the conduction-band profile from this appealing, but at the same time, strongly simplifying model. We find that the optical response -- comprising a series of inter-Landau level excitations -- can be described by the Rashba model only at low magnetic fields. In contrast, the high-field response appears to be more consistent with a simple picture of massless electrons in a conical band. This points towards more linear rather than parabolic at energies well above the bottom of the conduction band.

3D Dirac semimetal Cd3As2: A review of material properties

Cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2) - a time-honored and widely explored material in solid-state physics - has recently attracted considerable attention. This was triggered by a theoretical prediction concerning the presence of 3D symmetry-protected massless Dirac electrons, which could turn Cd3As2 into a 3D analogue of graphene. Subsequent extended experimental studies have provided us with compelling experimental evidence of conical bands in this system, and revealed a number of interesting properties and phenomena. At the same time, some of the material properties remain the subject of vast discussions despite recent intensive experimental and theoretical efforts, which may hinder the progress in understanding and applications of this appealing material. In this review, we focus on the basic material parameters and properties of Cd3As2, in particular those which are directly related to the conical features in the electronic band structure of this material. The outcome of experimental investigations, performed on Cd3As2 using various spectroscopic and transport techniques within the past sixty years, is compared with theoretical studies. These theoretical works gave us not only simplified effective models, but more recently, also the electronic band structure calculated numerically using ab initio methods.

Probing the role of Nd3+ ions in the weak multiferroic character of NdMn2O5 by optical spectroscopies

Raman and infrared spectroscopies are used as local probes to study the dynamics of the Nd-O bonds in the weakly multiferroic NdMn2O5 system. The temperature dependence of selected Raman excitations reveals the splitting of the Nd-O bonds in NdMn2O5. The Nd3+ ion crystal field (CF) excitations in NdMn2O5 single crystals are studied by infrared transmission as a function of temperature, in the 1800-8000 cm-1 range, and under an applied magnetic field up to 11 T. The frequencies of all 4Ij crystal-field levels of Nd3+ are determined. We find that the degeneracy of the ground-state Kramers doublet is lifted (Δ0 ~7.5 cm-1) due to the Nd3+-Mn3+ interaction in the ferroelectric phase, below TC ~ 28 K. The Nd3+ magnetic moment mNd(T) and its contribution to the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat are evaluated from Δ0(T) indicating that the Nd3+ ions are involved in the magnetic and the ferroelectric ordering observed below ~ 28 K. The Zeeman splitting of the excited crystal field levels of the Nd3+ ions at low temperature is also analyzed.

Avoided level crossing at the magnetic field induced topological phase transition due to spin-orbital mixing

In 3D topological insulators, an effective closure of the bulk energy gap with increasing magnetic field expected at a critical point can yield a band crossing at a gapless Dirac node. Using high-field magnetooptical Landau level spectroscopy on the topological crystalline insulator Pb1-xSnxSe, we demonstrate that such a gap closure does not occur, and an avoided crossing is observed as the magnetic field is swept through the critical field. We attribute this anticrossing to orbital parity and spin mixing of the N=0 levels. Concurrently, we observe no gap closure at the topological phase transition versus temperature suggesting that the anticrossing is a generic property of topological phase transitions.

Landau level spectroscopy of valence bands in HgTe quantum wells: Effects of symmetry lowering

Landau level spectroscopy has been employed to probe the electronic structure of the valence band in a series of p-type HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells with both normal and inverted ordering of bands. We find that the standard axial-symmetric 4-band Kane model, which is nowadays widely applied in physics of HgTe-based topological materials, does not fully account for the complex magneto-optical response observed in our experiments - notably, for the unexpected avoided crossings of excitations and for the appearance of transitions that are electric-dipole forbidden within this model. Nevertheless, reasonable agreement with experiments is achieved when the standard model is expanded to include effects of bulk and interface inversion asymmetries. These remove the axial symmetry, and among other, profoundly modify the shape of valence bands.

The energy scale of Dirac electrons in Cd3As2

Cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2) has recently became conspicuous in solid-state physics due to several reports proposing that it hosts a pair of symmetry-protected 3D Dirac cones. Despite vast investigations, a solid experimental insight into the band structure of this material is still missing. Here we fill one of the existing gaps in our understanding of Cd3As2, and based on our Landau level spectroscopy study, we provide an estimate for the energy scale of 3D Dirac electrons in this system. We find that the appearance of such charge carriers is limited - contrary to a widespread belief in the solid-state community - to a relatively small energy scale (below 40 meV).

Non-uniform carrier density in Cd$_3$As$_2$ evidenced by optical spectroscopy

We report the detailed optical properties of Cd$_3$As$_2$ crystals in a wide parameter space: temperature, magnetic field, carrier concentration and crystal orientation. We investigate high-quality crystals synthesized by three different techniques. In all the studied samples, independently of how they were prepared and how they were treated before the optical experiments, our data indicate conspicuous fluctuations in the carrier density (up to 30%). These charge puddles have a characteristic scale of 100 $μ$m, they become more pronounced at low temperatures, and possibly, they become enhanced by the presence of crystal twinning. The Drude response is characterized by very small scattering rates ($\sim 1$ meV) for as-grown samples. Mechanical treatment, such as cutting or polishing, influences the optical properties of single crystals, by increasing the Drude scattering rate and also modifying the high frequency optical response. Magneto-reflectivity and Kerr rotation are consistent with electron-like charge carriers and a spatially non-uniform carrier density.

Interband absorption edge in topological insulators Bi$_2$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_3$

We have investigated the optical properties of thin films of topological insulators Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$, Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and their alloys Bi$_2$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_3$ on BaF$_{2}$ substrates by a combination of infrared ellipsometry and reflectivity in the energy range from 0.06 to 6.5 eV. For the onset of interband absorption in Bi$_2$Se$_3$, after the correction for the Burstein-Moss effect, we find the value of direct bandgap of $215\pm10$ meV at 10 K. Our data supports the picture that Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has a direct band gap located at the $Γ$ point in the Brillouin zone and that the valence band reaches up to the Dirac point and has the shape of a downward oriented paraboloid, i.e. without a camel-back structure. In Bi$_2$Te$_3$, the onset of strong direct interband absorption at 10 K is at a similar energy of about 200 meV, with a weaker additional feature at about 170 meV. Our data support the recent GW band structure calculations suggesting that the direct interband transition does not occur at the $Γ$ point but near the Z-F line of the Brillouin zone. In the Bi$_2$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_3$ alloy, the energy of the onset of direct interband transitions exhibits a maximum near $x=0.3$ (i.e. the composition of Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se), suggesting that the crossover of the direct interband transitions between the two points in the Brillouin zone occurs close to this composition.

Raman scattering of graphene based systems in high magnetic fields

We review the different results obtained in the last decade in the field of Raman scattering of graphene based systems, with an applied magnetic field. Electronic properties of graphene based systems with an applied magnetic field will first be described. The phonon response in magnetic field, the magneto-phono resonance, will then be introduced and described in different systems, including graphene, multilayer graphene and bulk graphite. Electronic Raman scattering is then be discussed in the context of Landau level spectroscopy, of electron phonon interaction and of electron-electron interaction.

Granular superconductivity and magnetic-field-driven recovery of macroscopic coherence in a cuprate/manganite multilayer

We show that in Pr$ _{0.5} $La$ _{0.2} $Ca$ _{0.3} $MnO$ _{3} $/YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7} $ (PLCMO/YBCO) multilayers the low temperature state of YBCO is very resistive and resembles the one of a granular superconductor or a frustrated Josephson-junction network. Notably, a coherent superconducting response can be restored with a large magnetic field which also suppresses the charge-orbital order in PLCMO. This coincidence suggests that the granular superconducting state of YBCO is induced by the charge-orbital order of PLCMO. The coupling mechanism and the nature of the induced inhomogeneous state in YBCO remain to be understood.

BiTeCl and BiTeBr: a comparative high-pressure optical study

We here report a detailed high-pressure infrared transmission study of BiTeCl and BiTeBr. We follow the evolution of two band transitions: the optical excitation $β$ between two Rashba-split conduction bands, and the absorption $γ$ across the band gap. In the low pressure range, $p< 4$~GPa, for both compounds $β$ is approximately constant with pressure and $γ$ decreases, in agreement with band structure calculations. In BiTeCl, a clear pressure-induced phase transition at 6~GPa leads to a different ground state. For BiTeBr, the pressure evolution is more subtle, and we discuss the possibility of closing and reopening of the band gap. Our data is consistent with a Weyl phase in BiTeBr at 5$-$6~GPa, followed by the onset of a structural phase transition at 7~GPa.

Magneto-optical signature of massless Kane electrons in Cd3As2

We report on optical reflectivity experiments performed on Cd3As2 over a broad range of photon energies and magnetic fields. The observed response clearly indicates the presence of 3D massless charge carriers. The specific cyclotron resonance absorption in the quantum limit implies that we are probing massless Kane electrons rather than symmetry-protected 3D Dirac particles. The latter may appear at a smaller energy scale and are not directly observed in our infrared experiments.

Experimental approval of the extended flat bands and gapped subbands in rhombohedral multilayer graphene

Graphene layers are known to stack in two stable configurations, namely ABA or ABC stacking, with drastically distinct electronic properties. Unlike the ABA stacking, little has been done to experimentally investigate the electronic properties of ABC graphene multilayers. Here, we report the first magneto optical study of a large ABC domain in a graphene multilayers flake, with ABC sequences exceeding 17 graphene sheets. The ABC-stacked multilayers can be fingerprinted with a characteristic electronic Raman scattering response, which persists even at room temperatures. Tracing the magnetic field evolution of the inter Landau level excitations from this domain gives strong evidence to the existence of a dispersionless electronic band near the Fermi level, characteristic of such stacking. Our findings present a simple yet powerful approach to probe ABC stacking in graphene multilayer flakes, where this highly degenerated band appears as an appealing candidate to host strongly correlated states.

The hole Fermi surface in Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ probed by quantum oscillations

Transport and torque magnetometry measurements are performed at high magnetic fields and low temperatures in a series of p-type (Ca-doped) Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ crystals. The angular dependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations enables us to determine the Fermi surface of the bulk valence band states as a function of the carrier density. At low density, the angular dependence exhibits a downturn in the oscillations frequency between $0^\circ$ and $90^\circ$, reflecting a bag-shaped hole Fermi surface. The detection of a single frequency for all tilt angles rules out the existence of a Fermi surface with different extremal cross-sections down to $24$~meV. There is therefore no signature of a camel-back in the valence band of our bulk samples, in accordance with the direct band gap predicted by $GW$ calculations.

Temperature-driven massless Kane fermions in HgCdTe crystals: verification of universal velocity and rest-mass description

It has recently been shown that the electronic states in bulk gapless HgCdTe offer another realization of pseudo-relativistic three-dimensional particles in a condensed matter system. These single valley relativistic states, referred to as massless Kane fermions, cannot be described by any other well-known relativistic massless particles. Furthermore, the HgCdTe band structure can be continuously tailored by modifying either the cadmium content or temperature. At the critical concentration or temperature, the bandgap, Eg, collapses as the system undergoes a semimetal-to-semiconductor topological phase transition between the inverted and normal alignments. Here, using far-infrared magneto-spectroscopy we explore the continuous evolution of band structure of bulk HgCdTe as temperature is tuned across the topological phase transition. We demonstrate that the rest-mass of the Dirac-like Kane fermions, m changes sign at the critical temperature, while their velocity, c remains constant. The relation Eg = 2mc2 with the universal value of c = (1.07 +- 0.05)10x6 m/s remains valid in a broad range of temperatures and Cd concentrations, indicating a striking universality of the pseudo-relativistic description of the Dirac-like Kane fermions in HgCdTe.

Strong interband Faraday rotation in 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3

The Faraday effect is a representative magneto-optical phenomenon, resulting from the transfer of angular momentum between interacting light and matter in which time-reversal symmetry has been broken by an externally applied magnetic field. Here we report on the Faraday rotation induced in the prominent 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3 due to bulk interband excitations. The origin of this non-resonant effect, extraordinarily strong among other non-magnetic materials, is traced back to the specific Dirac-type Hamiltonian for Bi2Se3, which implies that electrons and holes in this material closely resemble relativistic particles with a non-zero rest mass.
