Clean and Dirty Superconductivity in Pure, Al doped, and Neutron Irradiated MgB2: a Far-Infrared Study

The effects of Al substitution and neutron irradiation on the conduction regime (clean or dirty) of the $π$- and $σ$-band of MgB$_{2}$ have been investigated by means of far-infrared spectroscopy. The intensity reflected by well characterized polycrystalline samples was measured up to 100 cm$^{- 1}$ in both normal and superconducting state. The analysis of the superconducting to normal reflectivity ratios shows that only the effect of the opening of the small gap in the dirty $π$-band can be clearly observed in pure MgB$_{2}$, consistently with previous results. In Al-doped samples the dirty character of the $π$-band is increased, while no definitive conclusion on the conduction regime of the $σ$-band can be drawn. On the contrary, results obtained for the irradiated sample show that the irradiation-induced disorder drives the $σ$-band in the dirty regime, making the large gap in $σ$-band observable for the first time in far-infrared measurements.

Frequency-dependent Thermal Response of the Charge System and Restricted Sum Rules in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

By using new and previous measurements of the $ab$-plane conductivity $σ_1^{ab} (ω,T)$ of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO) it is shown that the spectral weight $W = \int_0^Ω{σ_1^{ab} (ω,T) dω}$ obeys the same law $W = W_0 - B(Ω) T^2$ which holds for a conventional metal like gold, for $Ω$'s below the plasma frequency. However $B(Ω)$, which measures the "thermal response" of the charge system, in LSCO exhibits a peculiar behavior which points towards correlation effects. In terms of hopping models, $B(Ω)$ is directly related to an energy scale $t_T$, smaller by one order of magnitude than the full bandwidth $t_0 \sim W_0$.

Reflectivity measurements in uniaxial superconductors: a methodological discussion applied to the case of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

Most of the novel superconductors are uniaxial crystals, with metallic planes ($ab$) orthogonal to an insulating axis ($c$). Far-infrared measurements of the reflectivity $R_{ab} (ω)$ provide valuable information on their low-energy electrodynamics, but involve delicate experimental issues. Two of them are a possible contamination of $R_{ab} (ω)$ from the c axis and the extrapolation of the $R_{ab}$ data to $ω$ =0, both above and below $T_c$. Here we discuss quantitatively these issues with particular regard to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4+y}$, one of the most studied high-$T_c$ materials.

The infrared spectrum of Na_0.57CoO_2

The optical conductivity of single crystals of Na_xCoO_2 for $x$ = 0.57 is first reported between 295 and 30 K. In the far infrared, an "anomalous Drude" analysis leads to a carrier effective mass of 5 electron masses. That this high value is due to strong electron-phonon coupling is suggested by the Fano distortion of a phonon at 570 cm^-1. A peak at 8800 cm^-1 scales with the charge transfer band of several high-$T_c$ cuprates by simply replacing the in-plane Cu-O bond length with that for Co-O.

Lucarelli et al. reply to Tajima et al. (cond-mat 0303493)

In their Comment to a recent paper of ours [Lucarelli et al., PRL 92, 037002 (2003)], Tajima et al. (cond-mat 0303493) argue that the samples of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) where we find far-infrared peaks below 150 cm-1 (which suggest a charge stripe scenario) are not single crystals or are miscut. Here we show that the spectral feature on which this criticism is based was found both in floating-zone-grown crystals where the miscut was negligible, and in flux-grown crystals where the surface is intrinsically a-b. Further arguments are presented to support the validity of our data.

Raman Scattering versus Infrared Conductivity: Evidence for one-dimensional Conduction in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

Raman and Infrared (IR) spectra of an underdoped La_{1.90}Sr_{0.10}CuO_{4} single crystal have been measured as a function of temperature. Both techniques provide unconventional low-energy spectra. The IR conductivity exhibits features peaked at finite frequencies which do not have a counterpart in the Raman response. Below approximately 100 K a transfer of both Raman and IR spectral weight towards lower energies is found and a new component in the Raman response builds up being characterized by a very long lifetime of electrons propagating along the Cu-O bonds.

Infrared signatures of charge stripes in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

The in-plane optical conductivity of seven La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) single crystals with x between 0 and 0.15 has been studied from 30 to 295 K. All doped samples exhibit strong peaks in the far-infrared, which closely resemble those observed in Cu-O "ladders" with one-dimensional charge-ordering. The behavior with doping and temperature of the peak energy, width, and intensity allows us to conclude that we are observing charge stripes dynamics in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) on the fast time scale of infrared spectroscopy.
