Theoretical investigation of moiré patterns in quantum images

Moiré patterns are produced when two periodic structures with different spatial frequencies are superposed. The transmission of the resulting structure gives rise to spatial beatings which are called moiré fringes. In classical optics, the interest in moiré fringes comes from the fact that the spatial beating given by the frequency difference gives information about details(high spatial frequency) of a given spatial structure. We show that moiré fringes can also arise in the spatial distribution of the coincidence count rate of twin photons from the parametric down-conversion, when spatial structures with different frequencies are placed in the path of each one of the twin beams. In other words,we demonstrate how moiré fringes can arise from quantum images.

Experimental investigation of quantum key distribution with position and momentum of photon pairs

We investigate the utility of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations of the position and momentum of photon pairs from parametric down-conversion in the implementation of a secure quantum key distribution protocol. We show that security is guaranteed by the entanglement between downconverted pairs, and can be checked by either direct comparison of Alice and Bob's measurement results or evaluation of an inequality of the sort proposed by Mancini et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 120401 (2002)).

Moiré patterns in quantum images

We observed moiré fringes in spatial quantum correlations between twin photons generated by parametric down-conversion. Spatially periodic structures were nonlocally superposed giving rise to beat frequencies typical of moiré patterns. This result brings interesting perspectives regarding metrological applications of such a quantum optical setup.

Transmission of Quantum Images Through Long Distances

We report on an experiment demonstrating the principle for transmitting quantum images through long distances. Signal and idler beams carrying correlated images have natural divergences that can be compensated by the use of collimating lenses and at the same time preserving the information contained in their correlated angular spectra.

Heat Transport through Rough Channels

We investigate the two-dimensional transport of heat through viscous flow between two parallel rough interfaces with a given fractal geometry. The flow and heat transport equations are solved through direct numerical simulations, and for different conduction-convection conditions. Compared with the behavior of a channel with smooth interfaces, the results for the rough channel at low and moderate values of the Peclet number indicate that the effect of roughness is almost negligible on the efficiency of the heat transport system. This is explained here in terms of the Makarov's theorem, using the notion of active zone in Laplacian transport. At sufficiently high Peclet numbers, where convection becomes the dominant mechanism of heat transport, the role of the interface roughness is to generally increase both the heat flux across the wall as well as the active length of heat exchange, when compared with the smooth channel. Finally, we show that this last behavior is closely related with the presence of recirculation zones in the reentrant regions of the fractal geometry.

An additive variant of Tsallis generalized entropy

This is an analysis of the additivity of the entropy of thermodynamical systems with finite heat baths. It is presented an expression for the physical entropy of weakly interacting ergodic systems, and it is shown that it is valid for both the microcanonical (constant energy), the Boltzmann-Gibbs canonical (infinite heat bath) and the Tsallis (finite heat bath) ensembles. This physical entropy may be written as a variant of Tsallis entropy. It becomes an additive function after a suitable choice of additive constants, in a procedure reminiscent to the solution presented by Gibbs to the paradox bearing his name.

Brazilian elections: voting for a scaling democracy

The proportional elections held in Brazil in 1998 and 2002 display identical statistical signatures. In particular, the distribution of votes among candidates includes a power-law regimen. We suggest that the rationale behind this robust scaling invariance is a multiplicative process in which the voter's choice for a candidate is governed by a product of probabilities.

Propagation of the Angular Spectrum in the Up-conversion

We study theoretical and experimentally the propagation of the angular spectrum of the light produced in the up-conversion process. The connection between the angular spectrum of the fundamental and the second harmonic is derived and measured. We show that even though they are connected, it is not possible to directly transfer images from the fundamental to the second harmonic.

Microscopic analog of temperature within nonextensive thermostatistics

It is presented a microscopic interpretation for the temperature within Tsallis thermostatistics, generalizing the classical derivation based on the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics. It is shown that with this definition the zeroth law and the equipartition theorem are valid in their classical form. Moreover, it is observed that the equation of state for an ideal gas within generalized thermostatistics preserves the classical Boyle's law form $PV=NkT$.

Conservation of Orbital Angular Momentum in Stimulated Down-Conversion

We report on an experiment demonstrating the conservation of orbital angular momentum in stimulated down-conversion. The orbital angular momentum is not transferred to the individual beams of the spontaneous down-conversion, but it is conserved when twin photons are taken individually. We observe the conservation law for an individual beam of the down-conversion through cavity-free stimulated emission.

An extended-phase-space dynamics for the generalized nonextensive thermostatistics

We apply a variant of the Nose-Hoover thermostat to derive the Hamiltonian of a nonextensive system that is compatible with the canonical ensemble of the generalized thermostatistics of Tsallis. This microdynamical approach provides a deterministic connection between the generalized nonextensive entropy and power law behavior. For the case of a simple one-dimensional harmonic oscillator, we confirm by numerical simulation of the dynamics that the distribution of energy H follows precisely the canonical q-statistics for different values of the parameter q. The approach is further tested for classical many-particle systems by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the intrinsic nonlinear features of the nonextensive formalism are capable to generate energy fluctuations that obey anomalous probability laws. For q<1 a broad distribution of energy is observed, while for q>1 the resulting distribution is confined to a compact support.

Observation of Image Transfer and Phase Conjugation in Stimulated Down-Conversion

We observe experimentally the transfer of angular spectrum and image formation in the process of stimulated parametric down-conversion. Images and interference patterns can be transferred either from the pump or the auxiliary laser beams to the stimulated down-converted one. The stimulated field propagates as the complex conjugate of the auxiliary laser. The phase conjugation is observed through intensity pattern measurements.

Turbulent Effects on Fluid Flow through Disordered Porous Media

The influence of turbulent effects on a fluid flow through a (pseudo) porous media is studied by numerically solving the set of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the $κ$-$ε$ model for turbulence. The spatial domains are two-dimensional rectangular grids with different {\it porosities} obtained by the random placing of rigid obstacles. The objective of the simulations is to access the behavior of the generalized friction factor with varying Reynolds number. A good agreement with the Forchheimer's equation is observed. The flow distribution at both low and high Reynolds conditions is also analyzed.

It is shown that these distributions arise naturally, and that the heat capacity of the heat bath is the condition that determines its type. As a consequence, it is given a physical interpretation for the parameter $q$ of the generalized entropy.

Critical Behavior of a Three-State Potts Model on a Voronoi Lattice

We use the single-histogram technique to study the critical behavior of the three-state Potts model on a (random) Voronoi-Delaunay lattice with size ranging from 250 to 8000 sites. We consider the effect of an exponential decay of the interactions with the distance,$J(r)=J_0\exp(-ar)$, with $a>0$, and observe that this system seems to have critical exponents $γ$ and $ν$ which are different from the respective exponents of the three-state Potts model on a regular square lattice. However, the ratio $γ/ν$ remains essentially the same. We find numerical evidences (although not conclusive, due to the small range of system size) that the specific heat on this random system behaves as a power-law for $a=0$ and as a logarithmic divergence for $a=0.5$ and $a=1.0$

Inertial Effects on Fluid Flow through Disordered Media

We investigate the origin of the deviations from the classical Darcy law by numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations in two-dimensional disordered porous media. We apply the Forchheimer equation as a phenomenological model to correlate the variations of the friction factor for different porosities and flow conditions. At sufficiently high Reynolds numbers, when inertia becomes relevant, we observe a transition from linear to non-linear behavior which is typical of experiments. We find that such a transition can be understood and statistically characterized in terms of the spatial distribution of kinetic energy in the system.
