Kinetic description of W and Z boson creation in the early universe

We consider an alternative mechanism for the production of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. It is basically due to vacuum pair creation (VPC) of vector bosons (W and Z) as a consequence of a rapid W and Z mass generation during the electroweak phase transition in the early Universe. The mechanism is as follows: after their pair crreation, the vector bosons may either annihilate directly into photons or decay into leptons and quarks which subsequently annihilate as lepton-antilepton and quark-antiquark pairs into photons. Preliminary estimates show that the number of CMB photons obtained this way can be sufficient to explain the presently observed CMB photon density. In this contribution we present an exactly soluble model for vacuum pair creation kinetics.

The Hubble Diagram of Type Ia Supernovae in Non-Uniform Pressure Universes

We use the redshift-magnitude relation, as derived by Dcabrowski (1995), for the two exact non-uniform pressure spherically symmetric Stephani universes with the observer positioned at the center of symmetry, to test the agreement of these models with recent observations of high redshift type Ia supernovae (SNIa), as reported in Perlmutter et al. (1997). By a particular choice of model parameters, we show that these models give an excellent fit to the observed redshifts and (corrected) B band apparent magnitudes of the SNIa data, but for an age of the Universe which is typically about two Gyr greater than in the corresponding Friedmann model. Based on a value of $H_0 \sim 65$ and assuming $Λ\geq 0$, the P97 data implies a Friedmann age of at most 13 Gyr and in fact a best-fit (for $q_0 = 0.5$) age of only 10 Gyr. Our Stephani models, on the other hand, can give a good fit to the P97 data with an age of up to 15 Gyr and could, therefore, significantly alleviate the conflict between recent cosmological and astrophysical age predictions. The choice of model parameters is quite robust: one requires only that the non-uniform pressure parameter, $a$, in one of the models is negative and satisfies $|a| \lte$ 3 km$^2$ s$^{-2}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. By allowing slightly larger, negative, values of $a$ one may `fine tune' the model to give an even better fit to the P97 data.

Quantum Tunneling Effect in Oscillating Friedmann Cosmology

It is shown that the tunneling effect in quantum cosmology is possible not only at the very beginning or the very end of the evolution, but also at the moment of maximum expansion of the universe. A positive curvature expanding Friedmann universe changes its state of evolution spontaneously and completely, {\it without} any changes in the matter content, avoiding recollapse, and falling into oscillations between the nonzero values of the scale factor. On the other hand, an oscillating nonsingular universe can tunnel spontaneously to a recollapsing regime. The probability of such kind of tunneling is given explicitly. It is inversely related to the amount of nonrelativistic matter (dust), and grows from a certain fixed value to unity if the negative cosmological constant approaches zero.
