Effect of alloying on the microstructure, phase stability, hardness and partitioning behavior of a new dual-superlattice nickel-based superalloy

A novel y-y'-y" dual-superlattice superalloy, with promising mechanical properties up to elevated temperatures was recently reported. The present work employs state of the art chemical and spatial characterization techniques to study the effect systematic additions of Mo, W and Fe and variations in Nb and Al contents have on the phase fraction, thermal stability, elemental partitioning and mechanical properties. Alloys were produced through arc melting followed by heat treatment. Multi-scale characterization techniques and hardness testing were employed to characterize their microstructure, thermal stability and mechanical properties. Alterations in such properties or in elemental partitioning behaviour were then explained through thermodynamic modelling. A modest addition of 1.8 at.% Mo had a strong effect on the microstructure and thermal stability: it minimized microstructural coarsening during heat treatments while not significantly decreasing the y' solvus temperature. A reduction of Nb by 0.6 at.%, strongly reduced the y" volume fraction, without affecting the y' volume fraction. The reduced precipitate fraction led to a significant reduction in alloy hardness. Fe, added to achieve better processability and reduced material cost, decreased the y' solvus temperature and caused rapid microstructural coarsening during heat treatments, without affecting alloy hardness. A reduction of Al by 0.4 at.%, reduced the y' volume fraction and the y' solvus temperature, also without affecting alloy hardness. The addition of 0.9 at.% W decreased the y' solvus temperature but increased both precipitate volume fractions. These data will be invaluable to optimize current alloy design and to inform future alloy design efforts.

Toward Supergravity Spectral Action

A spectral action of Euclidean supergravity is proposed. We calculate up to $a_4$, the Seeley-Dewitt coefficients in the expansion of the spectral action associated to the supergravity Dirac operator. This is possible because in simple supergravity, as in pure gravity, a well defined and mathematically consistent Dirac operator can be constructed.

Duality Symmetry in Kaluza-Klein $n+D+d$ Dimensional Cosmological Model

It is shown that, with the only exception of $n=2$, the Einstein-Hilbert action in $n+D+d$ dimensions, with $n$ times, is invariant under the duality transformation $a\to \frac{1}{a}$ and $b\to \frac{1}{b}$, where $a$ is a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker scale factor in $D$ dimensions and $b$ a Brans-Dicke scalar field in $d$ dimensions respectively. We investigate the $2+D+d$ dimensional cosmological model in some detail.

Quantum Collapse of a Small Dust Shell

The full quantum mechanical collapse of a small relativistic dust shell is studied analytically, asymptotically and numerically starting from the exact finite dimensional classical reduced Hamiltonian recently derived by Háj{\'ı}ček and Kuchař. The formulation of the quantum mechanics encounters two problems. The first is the multivalued nature of the Hamiltonian and the second is the construction of an appropriate self adjoint momentum operator in the space of the shell motion which is confined to a half line. The first problem is solved by identifying and neglecting orbits of small action in order to obtain a single valued Hamiltonian. The second problem is solved by introducing an appropriate lapse function. The resulting quantum mechanics is then studied by means of analytical and numerical techniques. We find that the region of total collapse has very small probability. We also find that the solution concentrates around the classical Schwarzschild radius. The present work obtains from first principles a quantum mechanics for the shell and provides numerical solutions, whose behavior is explained by a detailed WKB analysis for a wide class of collapsing shells.

The Effect of low Momentum Quantum Fluctuations on a Coherent Field Structure

In the present work the evolution of a coherent field structure of the Sine-Gordon equation under quantum fluctuations is studied. The basic equations are derived from the coherent state approximation to the functional Schrödinger equation for the field. These equations are solved asymptotically and numerically for three physical situations. The first is the study of the nonlinear mechanism responsible for the quantum stability of the soliton in the presence of low momentum fluctuations. The second considers the scattering of a wave by the Soliton. Finally the third problem considered is the collision of Solitons and the stability of a breather. It is shown that the complete integrability of the Sine-Gordon equation precludes fusion and splitting processes in this simplified model. The approximate results obtained are non-perturbative in nature, and are valid for the full nonlinear interaction in the limit of low momentum fluctuations. It is also found that these approximate results are in good agreement with full numerical solutions of the governing equations. This suggests that a similar approach could be used for the baby Skyrme model, which is not completely integrable. In this case the higher space dimensionality and the internal degrees of freedom which prevent the integrability will be responsable for fusion and splitting processes. This work provides a starting point in the numerical solution of the full quantum problem of the interaction of the field with a fluctuation.
