Quantum interpretations, causality and quantum computation

The interpretation of quantum mechanics continues to be debated, and quantum nonlocality accentuates the puzzle. Quantum interpretations can be classified broadly into two types: realist interpretations, which assert that quantum states describe objective reality (even if hidden or branching), and subjective interpretations, which treat quantum states as observer-dependent information or beliefs about the system. Here we study the implication of quantum interpretations for causal explanations of Bell nonlocal correlations, and show that a given interpretation type carries an inherent commitment to a preferred causal structure. Specifically, we find that realist interpretations entail a classical causal model, and thus require Fine-Tuning to prevent superluminal signaling, while subjective interpretations are found to entail a framework of nonclassical causal models. The implications of our results for one-way quantum computation and computation-based Bell nonlocality are studied.

Algebraic and Spectral properties of slant Toeplitz and slant little Hankel Operators on weighted Bergman Space

This paper studies the \(k^{th}-\)order slant Toeplitz and slant little Hankel operators on the weighted Bergman space \(\mathcal{A}_α^2(\mathbb{D})\). These operators are constructed using a slant shift operator \(W_k\) composed with classical Toeplitz and Hankel operators, respectively. We derive their matrix representations and establish criteria for boundedness, compactness, and normality. Commutativity conditions are obtained, showing that two such operators commute if and only if their symbols are linearly dependent. Normality is characterized as slant Toeplitz operators are normal only for constant symbols, while slant little Hankel operators are normal if the symbol is analytic. Compactness is shown to occur precisely when the symbol vanishes. Spectral properties, including essential spectra and eigenvalue distributions, are analyzed. Numerical simulations corroborate the theoretical findings and highlight key structural and computational differences between the two operator classes.

Nanoporous gold thin films as substrates to analyze liquids by cryo-atom probe tomography

Cryogenic atom probe tomography (cryo-APT) is being developed to enable nanoscale compositional analyses of frozen liquids. Yet, the availability of readily available substrates that allow for the fixation of liquids while providing sufficient strength to their interface, is still an issue. Here we propose the use of 1-2 microns thick binary alloy film of gold-silver (AuAg) sputtered onto flat silicon, with sufficient adhesion without an additional layer. Through chemical dealloying, we successfully fabricate a nanoporous substrate, with open-pore structure, which is mounted on a microarray of Si posts by lift out in the focused-ion beam, allowing for cryogenic fixation of liquids. We present cryo-APT results obtained after cryogenic sharpening, vacuum cryo-transfer and analysis of pure water on top and inside the nanoporous film. We demonstrate that this new substrate has the requisite characteristics for facilitating cryo-APT of frozen liquids, with a relatively lower volume of precious metals. This complete workflow represents an improved approach for frozen liquid analysis, from preparation of the films to the successful fixation of the liquid in the porous network, to cryo-atom probe tomography.

k^{th} order Slant Hankel Operators on the Polydisk

In this paper, we initiate the notion of k^{th} order slant Hankel operators on L^2(T^n) for k greater than or equal to 2 and n greater than or equal to 1 where T^n denotes the n-torus. We give the necessary and sufficient condition for a bounded operator on L^2(T^n) to be a k^{th} order slant Hankel and discuss their commutative, compactness, hyponormal and isometric property.

Low field anisotropic colossal magnetoresistance in $Sm_{0.53} Sr_{0.47} Mn O_3$ thin films

SSMO5347 thin films (thicknesses ~200 nm) were deposited by on-axis dc magnetron sputtering on the single crystal LSAT (001) substrates. These films are oriented along the out of plane c-direction. The ferromagnetic and insulator-metal transition occurs at 96 K and 91 K, respectively. The magnetization easy axis is observed to lie in the plane of the film while the magnetic hard axis is found to be along the normal to this. The magnetotransport of the SSMO films, which was measured as a function of angle (theta) between the magnetic field (H) and plane of the film, shows colossal anisotropy. Magnetoresistance (MR) decreases drastically as theta increases from 0 degree (H//easy axis) to 90 degree (H//hard axis). The out-of-plane anisotropic MR (AMR) is as high as 88 % at H=3.6 kOe and 78 K. The colossal anisotropy has been explained in terms of the magnetic anisotropies at play and the magnetic domain motion in applied magnetic field.

Impact of size mismatch induced quenched disorder on phase fluctuation and low field magnetotransport in polycrystalline $Nd_{0.58-x} Gd_x Sr_{0.42} Mn O_3$

We report the magnetic and electrical transport properties of the bulk polycrystalline NGSMO (x ~ 0.0, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35 and 0.42) synthesized by solid state reaction at 1350 degree Celsius. All the samples are single phase and have grain size ~1-2 micrometer. The variation of magnetic and magnetotransport properties as a function of the variance sigma^2 show some interesting trends. As sigma^2 increases, the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition shows a gradual decrease and broadening, while the decrease in insulator metal transition (IMT) is accompanied by sharpening. However, near equality of TC and TIM at intermediate values of sigma2 could be understood in terms of the competing quenched and the grain boundary disorder. The variation of peak MR (maximum MR around TC/TIM) with sigma2 shows that maximum low field MR =35 % at H=3 kOe (68 % at H=10 kOe) is centered around sigma2 = 0.009857 {A}2 (x=0.25). This shows that huge intrinsic MR can be obtained at relatively higher temperatures and lower magnetic fields in the region of enhanced phase fluctuations.

Impact of substrate on magnetic phase coexistence in bicritical $Sm_{0.53} Sr_{0.47} Mn O_3$ thin films

Sm0.53Sr0.47MnO3 thin films were deposited on single crystal LaAlO3 (LAO/(001)) and SrTiO3 (STO/(001)) substrates by DC magnetron sputtering. The theta-2theta and omega-2theta scans show that these films have very good crystallinity and the films on LAO and STO are under compressive and tensile strain, respectively. The films on LAO and STO substrates show ferromagnetic (insulator-metal) transition at TC \sim 126 K (at TIM \sim 128 K) and 120 K (TIM \sim 117K), respectively. The magnetic state at T<TC is akin to cluster glass, which is formed by the presence of charge ordered-antiferromagnetic clusters in the ferromagnetic matrix. Huge drop in the resistivity at TIM and the associated hysteresis with respect to cooling and warming cycles reveal the bicritical and the first order nature of phase transition, which is also confirmed by the Banerjee criterion. The differences and similarities in the functional properties of films are explained in terms of substrate modified magnetic phase coexistence.

Utility of the inverse partial fluorescence for electronic structure studies of battery materials

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is one of the most widely used experimental techniques to study the electronic and spatial structure of materials. Fluorescence yield mode is bulk-sensitive, but has several serious problems coming from saturation effects. In this study, we show the usefulness of partial fluorescence yields in addressing these problems. We discuss the different behaviors of La2NiMnO6 and LiMnO2 at the Mn 2p absorption edges. The total fluorescence yield produces misleading spectra for LiMnO2 due to the absence of high-Z (Z: atomic number) elements. We conclude that the measurement of the inverse partial fluorescence yield is essential in studies of LiMnO2, which is a hotly debated Li-ion battery material.

Investigation of phonon behavior in Pr2NiMnO6 by micro-Raman spectroscopy

The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642, and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the 657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of a relatively weak spin-phonon coupling in Pr2NiMnO6 contrary to other double perovskites previously studied.

Phase formation, phonon behavior, and magnetic properties of novel ferromagnetic La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Ni) triple perovskites

In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that the insertion of AlO6 octahedra between CoO6 and MnO6 suppresses significantly the strength of the superexchange interaction, spin-phonon and spin-polar coupling.

Multiferroic double perovskites: Opportunities, Issues and Challenges

Despite the great technological and scientific importance, a well-controlled coupled behavior in magnetoelectric multiferroic materials at room temperature remains challenging. We demonstrate that the self-ordered A2BBO6 (e.g., A = La, B = Mn, and B = Ni) double perovskites provide a unique alternative opportunity to control and/or to induce such behavior in oxides. In this paper, we outline and discuss the various challenges and bottleneck issues related to this class of materials using La2NiMnO6 as a prototype. Details of the synthesis strategies, using pulsed laser deposition as a central tool, to obtain a meticulous control over cation ordering is illustrated. The possible impact of Ni/Mn cation ordering on the magnetic ground states, ferromagnetic transition temperature, phonon behavior, and spin-phonon coupling are presented. Our results are also compared with the current literature on related compounds.

Influence of Ni/Mn cation order on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6 epitaxial films by polarized Raman spectroscopy

We report the influence of Ni/Mn ordering on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6. Three types of films with different levels of structural order, including long-range Ni/Mn cation order, cation disorder, and an admixture of the ordered and disordered phases, are compared by polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Each film displays a strong dependence on the polarization configuration and a unique set of Raman active phonon excitations. Long-range cation ordering results in the splitting of Raman active phonon peaks because of Brillouin zone folding and lowering symmetry. Phonon mode softening begins clearly at a distinct temperature for each sample revealing a strong spin-lattice interaction. It follows closely the magnetization curve in ordered films. Unlike the admixture and the ordered films, softening behavior is strongly suppressed in the cation-disordered films. These differences may be understood based on the variation in amplitude of the spin-spin correlation functions due to the local Ni/Mn cation ordering.

Long-range Ni/Mn structural order in epitaxial double perovskite La2NiMnO6 thin films

We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The appearance of these additional phonon excitations is interpreted as the clearest signature of Brillouin zone folding as a result of the long-range Ni/Mn ordering in La2NiMnO6. Both ordered and disordered materials display a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition. The ordered films display also a saturation magnetization close to 4.8 mB/f.u. and a transition temperature (FM-TC) around 270 K, while the disordered ones have only a 3.7 mB/f.u. saturation magnetization and a FM-TC around 138 K. The differences in their magnetic behaviours are understood based on the distinct local electronic configurations of their Ni/Mn cations.

Growth, magnetic properties and Raman scattering of La2NiMnO6 single crystals

Millimeter size single crystals of double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) were grown by the High Temperature Solution Growth Method. The magnetic measurements and polarized Raman spectra between 5 and 350K provide evidence that the crystals have high degree of Ni(2+)/Mn(4+)ordering, small amount of lattice defects and highest Tc = 288K reported so far for ferromagnetic double perovskites. At a microscopic level the crystals are heavily twinned and the effect of twinning on the Raman spectra is analyzed in detail.

A radical approach to promote multiferroic coupling in double perovskites

Double perovskites provide a unique opportunity to induce and control multiferroic behaviors in oxide systems. The appealing possibility to design materials with a strong coupling between the magnetization and the polarization fields may be achieved in this family since these magnetic insulators can present structural self-ordering in the appropriate growth conditions. We have studied the functional properties of La2CoMnO6 and Bi2CoMnO6 epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Cation-ordered La2CoMnO6 films display a magnetic Curie temperature of 250 K while cation-disordered Bi2CoMnO6 films present ferromagnetism up to ~ 800 K. Such high transition temperature for magnetic ordering can be further tuned by varying the strain in the films indicating an important contribution from the structural characteristics of the materials. Our approach might be generalized for other oxide systems. At this end, our results are compared with other multiferroic systems. The roles of various cations, their arrangements and structural effects are further discussed.

Stabilization and functional properties of La3NiAlMnO9 and La3CoAlMnO9 magnetoelectric triple perovskites

Ferromagnetic La3NiAlMnO9 (LNAMO) and La3CoAlMnO9 (LCAMO) triple-perovskite thin films are stabilized in the 750-860 oC temperature range in 100 to 900 mTorr O2 pressure range using pulsed-laser deposition. The LCAMO and LNAMO films exhibit ferromagnetism up to 190 K and 130 K respectively. The structural, optical and magnetic properties of these films demonstrate that the B-site 3d-cations, Al, Mn and Co or Ni ions, are structurally short-range ordered. The strong spin-lattice-polarization coupling in LCAMO is evidenced by the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the softening of the phonon frequencies starting in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition mimicking the behaviours of La2CoMnO6 double perovskite.

Ferromagnetism and magneto-dielectric effect in insulating LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6 thin films

High quality epitaxial thin films of LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6 perovskite were fabricated on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Magnetization measurements reveal a strong magnetic anisotropy and a ferromagnetic behavior that is in agreement with a super-exchange interaction between Mn4+ and Co2+ ions, which are randomly distributed in the B-site. A distinct anomaly is observed in the dielectric measurements at 130K corresponding to the onset of the magnetic ordering, suggesting a coupling. Above this temperature, the extrinsic Maxwell-Wagner effect is dominating. Theses results are explained using the Raman spectroscopic studies indicating a weak spin-lattice interaction around this magnetic transition.

Absence of long-range Ni/Mn ordering in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 thin films

Epitaxial La2NiMnO6 thin films have been grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 using the PLD technique. The thin films are semiconducting and FM with a TC close to 270K, a coercive field of 920Oe, and a saturation magnetization of 5muB per f.u. TEM, conducted at RT, reveals a majority phase having "I-centered" structure with a=c=1.4asub and b=2asub along with a minority phase-domains having "P-type" structure (asub being the lattice parameter of the perovskite structure). A discusion on the presence of Ni/Mn long-range ordering, in light of recent literature on double perovskites La2NiMnO6 is presented.
