Boson-fermion mixtures inside an elongated cigar-shaped trap

We present mean-field calculations of the equilibrium state in a gaseous mixture of bosonic and spin-polarized fermionic atoms with repulsive or attractive interspecies interactions, confined inside a cigar-shaped trap under conditions such that the radial thickness of the two atomic clouds is approaching the magnitude of the s-wave scattering lengths. In this regime the kinetic pressure of the fermionic component is dominant. Full demixing under repulsive boson-fermion interactions can occur only when the number of fermions in the trap is below a threshold, and collapse under attractive interactions is suppressed within the range of validity of the mean-field model. Specific numerical illustrations are given for values of system parameters obtaining in 7Li-6Li clouds.

Single-particle and collective excitations in a charged Bose gas at finite temperature

The main focus of this work is on the predictions made by the dielectric formalism in regard to the relationship between single-particle and collective excitation spectra in a gas of point-like charged bosons at finite temperature $T$ below the critical region of Bose-Einstein condensation. Illustrative numerical results at weak coupling ($r_s = 1$) are presented within the Random Phase Approximation. We show that within this approach the single-particle spectrum forms a continuum extending from the transverse to the longitudinal plasma mode frequency and leading to a double-peak structure as $T$ increases, whereas the density fluctuation spectrum consists of a single broadening peak. We also discuss the momentum distribution and the superfluidity of the gas.

Shell structure in the density profile of a rotating gas of spin-polarized fermions

We present analytical expressions and numerical illustrations for the ground-state density distribution of an ideal gas of spin-polarized fermions moving in two dimensions and driven to rotate in a harmonic well of circular or elliptical shape. We show that with suitable choices of the strength of the Lorentz force for charged fermions, or of the rotational frequency for neutral fermions, the density of states can be tuned as a function of the angular momentum so as to display a prominent shell structure in the spatial density profile of the gas. We also show how this feature of the density profile is revealed in the static structure factor determining the elastic light scattering spectrum of the gas.

Coherent transport in linear arrays of quantum dots: the effects of period doubling and of quasi-periodicity

We evaluate the phase-coherent transport of electrons along linear structures of varying length, which are made from two types of potential wells set in either a periodic or a Fibonacci quasi-periodic sequence. The array is described by a tight-binding Hamiltonian and is reduced to an effective dimer by means of a decimation-renormalization method, extended to allow for connection to external metallic leads, and the transmission coefficient is evaluated in a T-matrix scattering approach. Parallel behaviors are found for the energy dependence of the density of electron states and of the transmittivity of the array. In particular, we explicitly show that on increasing its length the periodic array undergoes a metal-insulator transition near single occupancy per dot, whereas prominent pseudo-gaps emerge away from the band center in the Fibonacci-ordered array.

Excised acoustic black holes: the scattering problem in the time domain

The scattering process of a dynamic perturbation impinging on a draining-tub model of an acoustic black hole is numerically solved in the time domain. Analogies with real black holes of General Relativity are explored by using recently developed mathematical tools involving finite elements methods, excision techniques, and constrained evolution schemes for strongly hyperbolic systems. In particular it is shown that superradiant scattering of a quasi-monochromatic wavepacket can produce strong amplification of the signal, offering the possibility of a significant extraction of rotational energy at suitable values of the angular frequency of the vortex and of the central frequency of the wavepacket. The results show that theoretical tools recently developed for gravitational waves can be brought to fruition in the study of other problems in which strong anisotropies are present.

Feshbach resonance in a strictly two-dimensional atomic Bose gas

We discuss the atom-atom scattering problem across a Feshbach resonance in a two-dimensional dilute Bose gas at zero temperature, in the limit where the s-wave scattering length exceeds the width of the vertical confinement. We determine a tunable coupling-strength parameter and by controlling it we evaluate how the condensate wave function spreads out with increasing atom-atom repulsions. We also discuss the stability of the condensate in the magnetic-field regime where the coupling has become attractive.

Superradiance from BEC vortices: a numerical study

The scattering of sound wave perturbations from vortex excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates(BEC) is investigated by numerical integration of the associated Klein-Gordon equation. It is found that, at sufficiently high angular speeds, sound wave-packets can extract a sizeable fraction of the vortex energy through a mechanism of superradiant scattering. It is conjectured that this superradiant regime may be detectable in BEC experiments.

Anisotropy-driven transition from collisionless to collisional regime in the dipolar modes of a trapped gaseous mixture

We evaluate the dipolar oscillations of a harmonically trapped fermion gas containing thermal bosonic impurities as a function of the anisotropy of the trap, from the numerical solution of the Vlasov-Landau equations for the one-body phase-space distribution functions. Starting from a situation in which the two components of the gaseous mixture perform almost independent oscillations inside a spherical trap, we demonstrate that different collision behaviors arise for oscillations in different directions as the trap is deformed into an elongated cigar-like shape. An increase in the anisotropy of the confinement thus suffices to drive a transition of dipolar modes from a collisionless to a collisional regime.

Ground-state densities and pair correlation functions in parabolic quantum dots

We present an extensive comparative study of ground-state densities and pair distribution functions for electrons confined in two-dimensional parabolic quantum dots over a broad range of coupling strength and electron number. We first use spin-density-functional theory to determine spin densities that are compared with Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) data. This accurate knowledge of one-body properties is then used to construct and test a local approximation for the electron-pair correlations. We find very satisfactory agreement between this local scheme and the available DMC data, and provide a detailed picture of two-body correlations in a coupling-strength regime preceding the formation of Wigner-like electron ordering.

Fully Frustrated Cold Atoms

Fully frustrated Josephson Junction arrays (FF-JJA's) exhibit a subtle compound phase transition in which an Ising transition associated with discrete broken translational symmetry and a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition associated with quasi-long-range phase coherence occur nearly simultaneously. In this Letter we discuss a cold atom realization of the FF-JJA system. We demonstrate that both orders can be studied by standard momentum-distribution-function measurements and present numerical results, based on a successful self-consistent spin-wave approximation, that illustrate the expected behavior of observables.

Many-body effective mass enhancement in a two-dimensional electron liquid

Motivated by a large number of recent magnetotransport studies we have revisited the problem of the microscopic calculation of the quasiparticle effective mass in a paramagnetic two-dimensional (2D) electron liquid (EL). Our systematic study is based on a generalized $GW$ approximation which makes use of the many-body local fields and takes advantage of the results of the most recent QMC calculations of the static charge- and spin-response of the 2D EL. We report extensive calculations for the many-body effective mass enhancement over a broad range of electron densities. In this respect we critically examine the relative merits of the on-shell approximation, commonly used in weak-coupling situations, {\it versus} the actual self-consistent solution of the Dyson equation. We show that already for $r_s \simeq 3$ and higher, a solution of the Dyson equation proves here necessary in order to obtain a well behaved effective mass. Finally we also show that our theoretical results for a quasi-2D EL, free of any adjustable fitting parameters, are in good qualitative agreement with some recent measurements in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure.

Collective modes and ballistic expansion of a Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

We evaluate the frequencies of collective modes and the anisotropic expansion rate of a harmonically trapped Fermi superfluid at varying coupling strengths across a Feshbach resonance driving a BCS-BEC crossover. The equations of motion for the superfluid are obtained from a microscopic mean-field expression for the compressibility and are solved within a scaling ansatz. Our results confirm non-monotonic behavior in the crossover region and are in quantitative agreement with current measurements of the transverse breathing mode by Kinast {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 150402 (2004)] and of the axial breathing mode by Bartenstein {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 203201 (2004)].

Temperature dependence of the energy of a vortex in a two-dimensional Bose gas

We evaluate the thermodynamic critical angular velocity Omega_c(T) for creation of a vortex of lowest quantized angular momentum in a strictly two-dimensional Bose gas at temperature T, using a mean-field two-fluid model for the condensate and the thermal cloud. Our results show that (i) a Thomas-Fermi description of the condensate badly fails in predicting the particle density profiles and the energy of the vortex as functions of T; and (ii) an extrapolation of a simple Thomas-Fermi formula for Omega_c(0) is nevertheless approximately useful up to T = 0.5 T_c.

Boson-fermion demixing in a cloud of lithium atoms in a pancake trap

We evaluate the equilibrium state of a mixture of 7Li and 6Li atoms with repulsive interactions, confined inside a pancake-shaped trap under conditions such that the thickness of the bosonic and fermionic clouds is approaching the values of the s-wave scattering lengths. In this regime the effective couplings depend on the axial confinement and full demixing can become observable by merely squeezing the trap, without enhancing the scattering lengths through recourse to a Feshbach resonance.

Effects of collisions against thermal impurities in the dynamics of a trapped fermion gas

We present a theoretical study of the dynamical behavior of a gas made of ultracold fermionic atoms, which during their motions can collide with a much smaller number of thermal bosonic impurities. The atoms are confined inside harmonic traps and the interactions between the two species are treated as due to s-wave scattering with a negative scattering length modeling the 40K-87Rb fermion-boson system. We set the fermions into motion by giving a small shift to their trap center and examine two alternative types of initial conditions, referring to (i) a close-to-equilibrium situation in which the two species are at the same temperature (well below the Fermi temperature and well above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature); and (ii) a far-from-equilibrium case in which the impurities are given a Boltzmann distribution of momenta while the fermions are at very low temperatures. The dynamics of the gas is evaluated by the numerical solution of the Vlasov-Landau equations for the one-body distribution functions, supported by some analytical results on the collisional properties of a fermion gas. We find that the trapped gaseous mixture is close to the collisionless regime for values of the parameters corresponding to current experiments, but can be driven towards a collisional regime even without increasing the strength of the interactions, either by going over to heavier impurity masses or by matching the width of the momentum distribution of the impurities to the Fermi momentum of the fermion gas.

Self-consistent Overhauser model for the pair distribution function of an electron gas at finite temperature

We present calculations of the spin-averaged pair distribution function $g(r)$ in a homogeneous gas of electrons moving in dimensionality D=3 or D=2 at finite temperature. The model involves the solution of a two-electron scattering problem via an effective potential which embodies many-body effects through a self-consistent Hartree approximation, leading to two-body wave functions to be averaged over a temperature-dependent distribution of relative momentum for electron pairs. We report illustrative numerical results for $g(r)$ in an intermediate-coupling regime and interpret them in terms of changes of short-range order with increasing temperature.

Quasiparticle self-energy and many-body effective mass enhancement in a two-dimensional electron liquid

Motivated by a number of recent experimental studies we have revisited the problem of the microscopic calculation of the quasiparticle self-energy and many-body effective mass enhancement in a two-dimensional electron liquid. Our systematic study is based on the many-body local fields theory and takes advantage of the results of the most recent Diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of the static charge and spin response of the electron liquid. We report extensive calculations of both the real and imaginary parts of the quasiparticle self-energy. We also present results for the many-body effective mass enhancement and the renormalization constant over an extensive range of electron density. In this respect we critically examine the relative merits of the on-shell approximation versus the self-consistent solution of the Dyson equation. We show that in the strongly-correlated regime a solution of the Dyson equation proves necessary in order to obtain a well behaved effective mass. The inclusion of both charge- and spin-density fluctuations beyond the Random Phase Approximation is indeed crucial to get reasonable agreement with recent measurements.

Condensate localization in a quasi-periodic structure

We propose a set-up of optical laser beams by which one may realize a quasi-one-dimensional Fibonacci array of potential wells for a Bose-Einstein condensate. We use a Bose-Hubbard tight-binding model to evaluate the transport of superfluid Rb87 atoms driven by a constant force through such an array. We show that the minigaps that are generated in the spectral density-of-states by the quasi-periodic disorder give rise to prominent localization effects, which can be observed by measuring the tunnel output of matter into vacuum as a function of the intensity of the applied force.
