Simple Formulae for Sin^2 theta_eff^lept, M_W, Gamma_l, and their Physical Applications

The calculation of the partial widths of the Z boson in the effective scheme is discussed. Simple formulae for Sin^2 theta_eff^lept, M_W, and Gamma_l in the on-shell, MS, and effective renormalization schemes are presented. Their domain of validity extends to low M_H values probed by current experiments, and to the range of Delta alpha_hadr results from recent calculations. Physical applications of these formulae are illustrated. A comparative analysis of the above mentioned schemes is presented. The paper includes a discussion of the discrepancy of the Sin^2 theta_eff^lept values derived from the leptonic and hadronic sectors and of the shortcomings of theoretical error estimates of Sin^2 theta_eff^lept based solely on those affecting M_W.

Elastic Scattering of Neutrinos off Polarized Electrons

We calculate the cross sections for elastic nu_l + e -> nu_l + e and antinu_l + e -> antinu_l + e scattering (l=e, mu or tau) in the Born approximation and with exactly fixed polarization states of target and final-state electrons, discussing their sensitivity to the incident (anti)neutrino flavor. We suggest investigation of the flavor composition of a (anti)neutrino beam by a flux-independent analysis of the scattering of its constituents off polarized electrons.

QED Corrections to Neutrino Electron Scattering

We evaluate the O(alpha) QED corrections to the recoil electron energy spectrum in the process nu_l + e --> nu_l + e (+gamma), where (+gamma) indicates the possible emission of a photon and l=e, mu or tau. The soft and hard bremsstrahlung differential cross sections are computed for an arbitrary value of the photon energy threshold. We also study the O(alpha) QED corrections to the differential cross section with respect to the total combined energy of the recoil electron and a possible accompanying photon. Their difference from the corrections to the electron spectrum is investigated. We discuss the relevance and applicability of both radiative corrections, emphasizing their role in the analysis of precise solar neutrino electron scattering experiments.

QED Corrections to the Scattering of Solar Neutrinos and Electrons

We discuss recent calculations of the O(alpha) QED corrections to the recoil electron energy spectrum in neutrino electron scattering, and to the spectrum of the combined energy of the recoil electron and a possible accompanying photon emitted in the scattering process. We then examine the role of these corrections in the interpretation of precise measurements from solar neutrino electron scattering experiments.

Radiative Corrections to W and Quark Propagators in the Resonance Region

We discuss radiative corrections to W and quark propagators in the resonance region, |s-M^2| \lsim M*Gamma. We show that conventional mass renormalization, when applied to photonic or gluonic corrections, leads in next to leading order (NLO) to contributions proportional to [M*Gamma/(s-M^2)]^n, (n=1,2...), i.e. to a non-convergent series in the resonance region, a difficulty that affects all unstable particles coupled to massless quanta. A solution of this problem, based on the concepts of pole mass and width, is presented. It elucidates the issue of renormalization of amplitudes involving unstable particles and automatically circumvents the problem of apparent on-shell singularities. The roles of the Fried-Yennie gauge and the Pinch Technique prescription are discussed. Because of special properties of the photonic and gluonic contributions, and in contrast with the Z case, the gauge dependence of the conventional on-shell definition of mass is unbounded in NLO. The evaluations of the width in the conventional and pole formulations are compared and shown to agree in NLO but not beyond.

Radiative Corrections to W and Quark Propagators in the Resonance Region

It is shown that conventional mass renormalization, when applied to photonic or gluonic corrections to unstable particle propagators, leads to non-convergent series in the resonance region. A solution of this problem, based on the concepts of pole mass and width, is presented. In contrast with the Z case, the conventional on-shell definition of mass for W bosons and unstable quarks contains an unbounded gauge dependence in next-to-leading order. The on-shell and pole definitions of width are shown to coincide if terms of O(Γ^2) and higher are neglected, but not otherwise.

The Role of M(W) in Precision Studies of the Standard Model

Recent calculations have significantly decreased the scheme and residual scale dependence of basic radiative corrections of the Standard Electroweak Model. This leads to a theoretically accurate prediction of the W-boson mass M(W), as well as a reduced upper bound for the Higgs boson mass M(H). The implications of a precise M(W) measurement on the M(H) estimate are emphasized.

Analysis of the Z^0 Resonant Amplitude in General R_ξGauges

The Z^0 resonant amplitude is discussed in general R_ξgauges. When the original on-shell definition of the Z^0 mass M is employed, a gauge dependence of M emerges in the next-to-leading approximation which, although small, is of the same magnitude as the current experimental error. In the following order of expansion, these unphysical effects are unbounded. The gauge dependence of M disappears when modified, previously proposed definitions of mass or self-energies, are used. The relevance of these considerations to the concept of the mass of unstable particles is pointed out.

The Gluon Self-Energy in the Coulomb and Temporal Axial Gauges via the Pinch Technique

The $S$-matrix pinch technique is used to derive an effective gluon self-energy to one-loop order, when the theory is quantized in the Coulomb gauge (CG) and in the temporal axial gauge (TAG). When the pinch contributions are added, the gluon self-energies calculated in CG and TAG turn out to be identical and coincide with the result previously obtained with covariant gauges. The issue of gauge independence of several quantities in hot QCD is discussed from the pinch technique point of view. It is also pointed out that the spurious singularities which appear in TAG calculations cancel out once the pinch contributions are combined.
