Performance of the LHCb RICH detector at the LHC

The LHCb experiment has been taking data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN since the end of 2009. One of its key detector components is the Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system. This provides charged particle identification over a wide momentum range, from 2-100 GeV/c. The operation and control software, and online monitoring of the RICH system are described. The particle identification performance is presented, as measured using data from the LHC. Excellent separation of hadronic particle types (pion, kaon and proton) is achieved.

Quantum Backflow States from Eigenstates of the Regularized Current Operator

We present an exhaustive class of states with quantum backflow -- the phenomenon in which a state consisting entirely of positive momenta may have negative current and the probability flows in the opposite direction to the momentum. They are characterized by a general function of momenta subject to very weak conditions. Such a family of states is of interest in the light of a recent experimental proposal to measure backflow. We find one particularly simple state which has surprisingly large backflow -- about 41 percent of the lower bound on flux derived by Bracken and Melloy. We study the eigenstates of a regularized current operator and we show how some of these states, in a certain limit, lead to our class of backflow states. This limit also clarifies the correspondence between the spectrum of the regularized current operator, which has just two non-zero eigenvalues in our chosen regularization, and the usual current operator.

Averages of b-hadron, c-hadron, and tau-lepton properties as of early 2012

This article reports world averages of measurements of b-hadron, c-hadron, and tau-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) using results available through the end of 2011. In some cases results available in the early part of 2012 are included. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, CP violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays and CKM matrix elements.

Measurement of the branching ratio of the decay $Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$

From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 $Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$ candidates with a background contamination of $30.8 \pm 4.2$ events. From this sample, the BR($Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$) is measured to be $(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}$.

Forty seven new T dwarfs from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey

We report the discovery of 47 new T dwarfs in the Fourth Data Release (DR4) from the Large Area Survey (LAS) of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey with spectral types ranging from T0 to T8.5. These bring the total sample of LAS T dwarfs to 80 as of DR4. In assigning spectral types to our objects we have identified 8 new spectrally peculiar objects, and divide 7 of them into two classes. H2O-H-early have a H2O-H index that differs with the H2O-J index by at least 2 sub-types. CH4-J-early have a CH4-J index that disagrees with the H20-J index by at least 2 subtypes. We have ruled out binarity as a sole explanation for both types of peculiarity, and suggest that they may represent hitherto unrecognised tracers of composition and/or gravity. Clear trends in z'(AB)-J and Y-J are apparent for our sample, consistent with weakening absorption in the red wing of the KI line at 0.77microns with decreasing effective temperature. We have used our sample to estimate space densities for T6-T9 dwarfs. By comparing our sample to Monte-Carlo simulations of field T dwarfs for various mass functions of the form phi(M) \propto M^-alpha, we have placed weak constraints on the form of the field mass function. Our analysis suggests that the substellar mass function is declining at lower masses, with negative values of alpha preferred. This is at odds with results for young clusters that have been generally found to have alpha > 0.

Empirical parameterization of the K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decay Dalitz plot

As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays.

The reanalysis of spectra of GRB 080913 to estimate the neutral fraction of the IGM at a redshift of 6.7

Aims: We reanalyse optical spectra of the z=6.7 gamma-ray burst GRB 080913, adding hitherto unpublished spectra, in order to reassess the measurement of the neutral fraction of the IGM at high redshifts. Methods: In the data reduction we take particular care to minimise systematic errors in the sky subtraction, which are evident in the published spectrum, and compromise the analysis. The final combined spectrum has a higher S/N than the previously published spectrum by a factor of 1.3. Results: We find a single significant absorption line redward of the Ly-alpha continuum break, which we identify with the SII+SiII blend (rest wavelength of 0.1260 micron), at z=6.733. The sharp spectral break at Ly-alpha implies a comparatively low total column density of neutral hydrogen along the line of sight, log [N(HI)/cm^-2] < 20. We model the absorption with a host-galaxy DLA, surrounded by an ionised region of unknown size r, within the IGM of neutral fraction, x(HI). Despite knowing the source redshift, and the improved S/N of the spectrum, when fitting only over wavelengths redward of Ly-alpha, no useful constraints on x(HI) can be obtained. We consider the possibility of including the ionised region, blueward of Ly-alpha, in constraining the fit. For the optimistic assumption that the ionised region is transparent, tau_{GP} << 1, we find that the region is of small size r < 2 proper Mpc, and we obtain an upper limit to the neutral fraction of the IGM at z=6.7 of x(HI) < 0.73.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Discovery of a redshift 6.13 quasar in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey

Optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra are presented for ULAS J131911.29+095951.4 (hereafter ULAS J1319+0950), a new redshift z = 6.127 +/- 0.004 quasar discovered in the Third Data Release (DR3) of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The source has Y_Vega = 19.10 +/- 0.03, corresponding to M_1450,AB = -27.12, which is comparable to the absolute magnitudes of the z ~= 6 quasars discovered in the SDSS. ULAS J1319+0950 was, in fact, registered by SDSS as a faint source with z_AB = 20.1 +/- 0.1, just below the signal--to--noise ratio limit of the SDSS high-redshift quasar survey. The faint z-band magnitude is a consequence of the weak Ly alpha/N V emission line, which has a rest-frame equivalent width of only ~20 A and provides only a small boost to the z-band flux. Nevertheless, there is no evidence from this UKIDSS-based search for a significant population of high-redshift quasars with weak emission lines. The Ly alpha optical depth to ULAS J1319+0950 is consistent with that measured towards similarly distant SDSS quasars, implying that results from optical- and NIR-selected quasars may be combined. Also presented is a new NIR-spectrum of the previously discovered UKIDSS quasar ULAS J020332.38+001229.2, which reveals the object to be a broad absorption line quasar. The new spectrum shows that the emission line previously identified as Ly alpha is actually N V, leading to a revised redshift of z = 5.72, rather than z = 5.86 as previously estimated.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

Spectropolarimetry of the Massive Post-Red Supergiants IRC +10420 and HD 179821

We present medium resolution spectropolarimetry and long term photo-polarimetry of two massive post-red supergiants, IRC +10420 and HD 179821. The data provide new information on their circumstellar material as well as their evolution. In IRC +10420, the polarization of the Halpha line is different to that of the continuum, which indicates that the electron-scattering region is not spherically symmetric. The observed long term changes in the polarimetry can be associated with an axi-symmetric structure, along the short axis of the extended reflection nebulosity. Long term photometry reveals that the star increased in temperature until the mid-nineties, after which the photospheric flux in the optical levelled off. As the photometric changes are mostly probed in the red, they do not trace high stellar temperatures sensitively. And so, it is not obvious whether the star has halted its increase in temperature or not. For HD 179821 we find no polarization effects across any absorption or emission lines, but observe very large polarization changes of order 5% over 15 years. Unexpectedly, during the same period, the optical photometry displayed modest variability at the 0.2 magnitude level. Several explanations for this puzzling fact are discussed. Most of which, involving asymmetries in the circumstellar material, seem to fail as there is no evidence for the presence of hot, dusty material close to the star. Alternatively, the variations can be explained by the presence of a non-radially pulsating photosphere. Changes in the photometry hint at an increase in temperature corresponding to a change through two spectral subclasses over the past ten years.

On the difference between Herbig Ae and Herbig Be stars

We present linear spectropolarimetric data for eight Herbig Be and four Herbig Ae stars at H alpha, H beta and H gamma. Changes in the linear polarisation are detected across all Balmer lines for a large fraction of the observed objects, confirming that the small-scale regions surrounding these objects are flattened (i.e. disk-like). Furthermore, all objects with detections show similar characteristics at the three spectral lines, despite differences in transition probability and optical depth going from H alpha to H gamma. A large fraction of early Herbig Be stars (B0-B3) observed show line depolarisation effects. However the early Herbig Ae stars (A0-A2), observed for comparison, show intrinsic line polarisation signatures. Our data suggest that the popular magnetic accretion scenario for T Tauri objects may be extended to Herbig Ae stars, but that it may not be extended to early Herbig Be stars, for which the available data are consistent with disc accretion.

A Polarimetric Study of the B[e] star HD 45677

We present new medium-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of HD 45677 in the B and R-bands. A change in polarisation is detected across Halpha, Hbeta and Hgamma confirming that the ionised region around the star is aspherical. (Q,U) points associated with these emission lines occur away from the continuum, defining a polarisation vector which points in the same direction for each of the lines at an average intrinsic polarisation angle of 164 +/- 3 degrees. These data were combined with past photometric and polarimetric data from the literature to investigate any variability. We find that HD 45677 is both photometrically and polarimetrically variable and that these changes are linked. We suggest that these variations may be caused by an aspherical blowout and by deriving a least-squares fit to the B-band polarimetric data in Q-U space, we show that the blowout occurs at an intrinsic polarisation angle of 175 +/- 1 degrees, along the same angle as the proposed geometry of the ionised region.

Posture Noise and the Measured Probability to Fall

Experimental evidence is presented connecting small fluctuations in the posture of a quiet standing subject and the probability that the subject will have an accidental fall within a time period of one year. The data can be understood on the basis of random velocity fluctuations providing kinetic energy in dynamical posture modes. The kinetic energy can activate a transition over the a potential energy barrier which keeps subjects in a metastable standing mode. The probability for a fall then follows an Arrhenius activation law.

Sterile Neutrino Hot, Warm, and Cold Dark Matter

We calculate the incoherent resonant and non-resonant scattering production of sterile neutrinos in the early universe. We find ranges of sterile neutrino masses, vacuum mixing angles, and initial lepton numbers which allow these species to constitute viable hot, warm, and cold dark matter (HDM, WDM, CDM) candidates which meet observational constraints. The constraints considered here include energy loss in core collapse supernovae, energy density limits at big bang nucleosynthesis, and those stemming from sterile neutrino decay: limits from observed cosmic microwave background anisotropies, diffuse extragalactic background radiation, and Li-6/D overproduction. Our calculations explicitly include matter effects, both effective mixing angle suppression and enhancement (MSW resonance), as well as quantum damping. We for the first time properly include all finite temperature effects, dilution resulting from the annihilation or disappearance of relativistic degrees of freedom, and the scattering-rate-enhancing effects of particle-antiparticle pairs (muons, tauons, quarks) at high temperature in the early universe.
