Monte Carlo evaluation of the external gamma, neutron and muon induced background sources in the CUORE experiment

CUORE is a 1 ton scale cryogenic experiment aiming at the measurement of the Majorana mass of the electron neutrino. The detector is an array of 988 TeO2 bolometers used for a calorimetric detection of the two electrons emitted in the BB0n of 130Te. The sensitivity of the experiment to the lowest Majorana mass is determined by the rate of background events that can mimic a BB0n. In this paper we investigate the contribution of external sources i.e. environmental gammas, neutrons and cosmic ray muons to the CUORE background and show that the shielding setup designed for CUORE guarantees a reduction of this external background down to a level <1.0E-02 c/keV/kg/y at the Q-value, as required by the physical goal of the experiment.

CdWO4 bolometers for Double Beta Decay search

In the field of Double Beta Decay (DBD) searches the possibility to have high resolution detectors in which background can be discriminated is very appealing. This very interesting possibility can be largely fulfilled in the case of a scintillating bolometer containing a Double Beta Decay emitter whose transition energy exceeds the one of the natural gamma line of 208Tl. We present the latest results obtained in the development of such a kind of scintillating bolometer. For the first time an array of five CdWO4 (116Cd has a Double Beta Decay transition energy of 2805 keV) crystals is tested. The array consists of a plane of four 3x3x3 cm3 crystals and a second plane consisting of a single 3x3x6 cm3 crystal. This setup is mounted in hall C of the National Laboratory of Gran Sasso inside a lead shielding in order to reduce as far as possible the environmental background. The aim of this test is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of this technique through an array of detectors and perform a long background measurement in the best conditions in order to prove the achievable background in the Zero neutrino-DBD region.

Results from a search for the $0νββ$-decay of $^{130}Te$

A detailed description of the CUORICINO $^{130}Te$ neutrinoless double-beta ($\nbb$) decay experiment is given and recent results are reported. CUORICINO is an array of 62 tellurium oxide ($TeO_{2}$) bolometers with an active mass of 40.7 kg. It is cooled to $\sim 8-10$ mK by a dilution refrigerator shielded from environmental radioactivity and energetic neutrons. It is running in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Assergi, Italy. These data represent an exposure of $11.83\textrm{kg}...\textrm{y}$ or 91 mole-years of $^{130}Te$. No evidence for $\nbb$-decay was observed and a limit of $T^{0ν}_{1/2}(^{130}Te)\geq3.0\times10^{24}$ y (90% C.L.) is set. This corresponds to an upper limit on the effective mass, $< m_ν>$, between 0.19 and 0.68 eV when analyzed with the many published nuclear structure calculations. In the context of these nuclear models, the values fall within the range corresponding to the claim of evidence of $\nbb$-decay by H.V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus, \textit{et al.} The experiment continues to acquire data.

Scintillating double beta decay bolometers

We present the results obtained in the development of scintillating Double Beta Decay bolometers. Several Mo and Cd based crystals were tested with the bolometric technique. The scintillation light was measured through a second independent bolometer. A 140 g CdWO_4 crystal was run in a 417 h live time measurement. Thanks to the scintillation light, the alpha background is easily discriminated resulting in zero counts above the 2615 keV gamma line of Thallium 208. These results, combined with an extremely easy light detector operation, represent the first tangible proof demonstrating the feasibility of this kind of technique.

The Microcalorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE): a next-generation calorimetric neutrino mass experiment

Neutrino oscillation experiments have proved that neutrinos are massive particles, but can't determine their absolute mass scale. Therefore the neutrino mass is still an open question in elementary particle physics. An international collaboration is growing around the project of Microcalorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE) for directly measuring the neutrino mass with a sensitivity of about 0.2eV/c2. Many groups are joining their experiences and technical expertise in a common effort towards this challenging experiment. We discuss the different scenarios and the impact of MARE as a complement of KATRIN.

A New Limit on the Neutrinoless DBD of 130Te

We report the present results of CUORICINO a cryogenic experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) of 130Te consisting of an array of 62 crystals of TeO2 with a total active mass of 40.7 kg. The array is framed inside of a dilution refrigerator, heavily shielded against environmental radioactivity and high-energy neutrons, and operated at a temperature of ~8 mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. Temperature pulses induced by particle interacting in the crystals are recorded and measured by means of Neutron Transmutation Doped thermistors. The gain of each bolometer is stabilized with voltage pulses developed by a high stability pulse generator across heater resistors put in thermal contact with the absorber. The calibration is performed by means of two thoriated wires routinely inserted in the set-up. No evidence for a peak indicating neutrinoless DBD of 130Te is detected and a 90% C.L. lower limit of 1.8E24 years is set for the lifetime of this process. Taking largely into account the uncertainties in the theoretical values of nuclear matrix elements, this implies an upper boud on the effective mass of the electron neutrino ranging from 0.2 to 1.1 eV. This sensitivity is similar to those of the 76Ge experiments.

A Calorimetric Search on Double Beta Decay of 130Te

We report on the final results of a series of experiments on double decay of 130Te carried out with an array of twenty cryogenic detectors. The set-up is made with crystals of TeO2 with a total mass of 6.8 kg, the largest operating one for a cryogenic experiment. Four crystals are made with isotopically enriched materials: two in 128Te and two others in 130Te. The remaining ones are made with natural tellurium, which contains 31.7 % and 33.8 % 128Te and 130Te, respectively. The array was run under a heavy shield in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory at a depth of about 3500 m.w.e. By recording the pulses of each detector in anticoincidence with the others a lower limit of 2.1E23 years has been obtained at the 90 % C.L. on the lifetime for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. In terms of effective neutrino mass this is the most restrictive limit in direct experiments, after those obtained with Ge diodes. Limits on other lepton violating decays of 130Te and on the neutrinoless double beta decay of 128Te to the ground state of 128Xe are also reported and discussed. An indication is presented for the two neutrino double beta decay of 130Te. Some consequences of the present results in the interpretation of geochemical experiments are discussed.

A bolometric measurement of the antineutrino mass

High statistics calorimetric measurements of the beta spectrum of 187Re are being performed with arrays of silver perrhenate crystals operated at low temperature. After a modification of the experimental set-up, which allowed to substantially reduce the background of spurious counts and therefore to increase the sensitivity on the electron antineutrino mass, a new measurement with 10 silver perrhenate microbolometers is running since July 2002. The crystals have masses between 250 and 350 micrograms and their average FWHM energy resolution, constantly monitored by means of fluorescence X-rays, is of 28.3 eV at the beta end-point. The Kurie plot collected during 4485 hours x mg effective running time has an end-point energy of 2466.1 +/- 0.8{stat} +/- 1.5 {syst} eV, while the half lifetime of the decay is found to be 43.2 +/- 0.2{stat} +/- 0.1{syst} Gy. These values are the most precise obtained so far for 187Re. From the fit of the Kurie plot we can deduce a value for the squared electron antineutrino mass m(nu)^2 of 147 +/- 237{stat} +/- 90{syst} eV^2. The corresponding 90% C.L. upper limit for m(nu) is 21.7 eV.

CUORE: A Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events

CUORE is a proposed tightly packed array of 1000 TeO2 bolometers, each being a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 760 g. The array consists of 25 vertical towers, arranged in a square of 5 towers by 5 towers, each containing 10 layers of 4 crystals. The design of the detector is optimized for ultralow-background searches: for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te (33.8% abundance), cold dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. A preliminary experiment involving 20 crystals 3x3x6 cm3 of 340 g has been completed, and a single CUORE tower is being constructed as a smaller scale experiment called CUORICINO. The expected performance and sensitivity, based on Monte Carlo simulations and extrapolations of present results, are reported.

Measurement of the R$_{LT}$ response function for $π^0$ electroproduction at $Q^2$ = 0.070 (GeV/c)$^2$ in the $N\toΔ$ transition}

Quadrupole amplitudes in the $γ^{*}N\toΔ$ transition are associated with the issue of nucleon deformation. A search for these small amplitudes has been the focus of a series of measurements undertaken at Bates/MIT by the OOPS collaboration. We report on results from H$(e,e^\prime p)π^0$ data obtained at $Q^2= 0.070$ (GeV/c)$^2$ and invariant mass of W=1155 MeV using the out-of-plane detection technique with the OOPS spectrometers. The $σ_{LT}$ and $σ_{T}+ε\cdot$ $σ_{L}$ response functions were isolated. These results, along with those of previous measurements at $W$=1172 MeV and $Q^2= 0.127$ (GeV/c)$^2$, aim in elucidating the interplay between resonant and non resonant amplitudes.

New Limits on Naturally Occurring Electron Capture of 123Te

Electron capture of 123Te from the K shell has been investigated in a new underground search with an array of 340 g TeO_2 thermal detectors. We find that some previous indication of this decay could be attributed to E.C. of 121Te resulting from neutron activation of natural Tellurium. There is therefore so far no evidence for E.C. of 123Te from the K shell with a 90 % c.l. lower limit t_{1/2}^K > 5.E19 years on the half lifetime. Taking into account the predicted K E.C. branching ratio, the corresponding lower limit on the 123Te EC half lifetime is t_{1/2} > 9.2E16 y, which can be theoretically interpreted only on the basis of a strong suppression of the nuclear matrix elements. A complementary analysis based on the expected fraction of E.C. accompanied by internal bremsstrahlung is discussed.
