The accomplishment of the Engineering Design Activities of IFMIF/EVEDA: The European Japanese project towards a Li(d,xn) fusion relevant neutron source

The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF), presently in its Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA) phase under the frame of the Broader Approach Agreement between Europe and Japan, accomplished in summer 2013, on schedule, its EDA phase with the release of the engineering design report of the IFMIF plant, which is here described. Many improvements of the design from former phases are implemented, particularly a reduction of beam losses and operational costs thanks to the superconducting accelerator concept, the re-location of the quench tank outside the test cell (TC) with a reduction of tritium inventory and a simplification on its replacement in case of failure, the separation of the irradiation modules from the shielding block gaining irradiation flexibility and enhancement of the remote handling equipment reliability and cost reduction, and the water cooling of the liner and biological shielding of the TC, enhancing the efficiency and economy of the related sub-systems. In addition, the maintenance strategy has been modified to allow a shorter yearly stop of the irradiation operations and a more careful management of the irradiated samples. The design of the IFMIF plant is intimately linked with the EVA phase carried out since the entry into force of IFMIF/EVEDA in June 2007.

Reward Shaping for Reinforcement Learning with Omega-Regular Objectives

Recently, successful approaches have been made to exploit good-for-MDPs automata (Büchi automata with a restricted form of nondeterminism) for model free reinforcement learning, a class of automata that subsumes good for games automata and the most widespread class of limit deterministic automata. The foundation of using these Büchi automata is that the Büchi condition can, for good-for-MDP automata, be translated to reachability. The drawback of this translation is that the rewards are, on average, reaped very late, which requires long episodes during the learning process. We devise a new reward shaping approach that overcomes this issue. We show that the resulting model is equivalent to a discounted payoff objective with a biased discount that simplifies and improves on prior work in this direction.

Secular light curves of 25 members of the Themis family of asteroids, suspected of exhibiting low level cometary activity

From 1996 to 2015 sixteen main belt asteroids were discovered exhibiting cometary activity (less than one per year), all of them during searches at the telescope. In this work we will explore another way to discover them. We reduced 192016 magnitude observations of 165 asteroids of the Themis family, using data from the astrometric-photometric database of the Minor Planet Center, MPCOBS, and measuring the absolute magnitudes from the phase plots. 25 objects of 165 (15.2%), exhibited bumps or enhancements in brightness that might indicate low level cometary activity. Since activity repeats at the same place in different orbits and in many occasions is centered at perihelion, activity might be due to water ice sublimation. As of September 2016, there are 717768 asteroids listed in the MPC files. If we assume that we do not have any false positives and the above percentage can be extrapolated to the whole Main Belt, the number of potentially active asteroid gets to the very large number of ~111.000. This number is much larger than the ones predicted in previous surveys and indicates one of three scenarios: A) there are many false positives in our detections and the real number of active asteroid is much smaller than we found, implying that the MPC astrometric-photometric database is only astrometric and not photometric. B) The location of active asteroids is restricted to the Themis family and an extrapolation to the whole belt is not possible. Or C) there are few false positives in our candidates and the main belt actually contains many low level active asteroids undetected by current surveys. Case C) would imply that the main belt is not a field of bare rocks but a graveyard of extinct comets, changing our current paradigm of the main belt. So it is of the outmost importance to verify observationally our candidates, and determine which of these scenarios is valid.

Hadronic processes as origin of TeV emission in Fanaroff-Riley Class I: Cen A, M87 and NGC1275

Recent detections of Fanaroff-Riley Class I AGNs by HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS suggest that very-high-energy gamma-rays (VHE, E > 100 GeV) may not have a leptonic origin. We present a hadronic model to describe the TeV photons as the neutral pion decay resulting from pgamma and pp interactions. For the pgamma interaction, we assume that the target photons are produced by leptonic processes and apparent at the second spectral peak. For the pp interaction we consider as targets the thermal particle densities in the lobes. We show that this model can describe the TeV spectra of the radio galaxies NCG 1275, M87 and Cen A

How many Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays could we expect from Centaurus A?

The Pierre Auger Observatory has associated a few ultra high energy cosmic rays with the direction of Centaurus A. This source has been deeply studied in radio, infrared, X-ray and $γ$-rays (MeV-TeV) because it is the nearest radio-loud active galactic nuclei. Its spectral energy distribution or spectrum shows two main peaks, the low energy peak, at an energy of $10^{-2}$ eV, and the high energy peak, at about 150 keV. There is also a faint very high energy (E $\geq$ 100 GeV) $γ$-ray emission fully detected by the High Energy Stereoscopic System experiment. In this work we describe the entire spectrum, the two main peaks with a Synchrotron/Self-Synchrotron Compton model and, the Very High Energy emission with a hadronic model. We consider p$γ$ and $pp$ interactions. For the p$γ$ interaction, we assume that the target photons are those produced at 150 keV in the leptonic processes. On the other hand, for the pp interaction we consider as targets the thermal particle densities in the lobes. Requiring a satisfactory description of the spectra at very high energies with p$γ$ interaction we obtain an excessive luminosity in ultra high energy cosmic rays (even exceeding the Eddington luminosity). However, when considering pp interaction to describe the $γ$-spectrum, the obtained number of ultra high energy cosmic rays are in agreement with Pierre Auger observations. Moreover, we calculate the possible neutrino signal from pp interactions on a Km$^3 $ neutrino telescope using Monte Carlo simulations.

Mechanism of generation of the emission bands in the dynamic spectrum of the Crab pulsar

We show that the proportionately spaced emission bands in the dynamic spectrum of the Crab pulsar (Hankins T. H. & Eilek J. A., 2007, ApJ, 670, 693) fit the oscillations of the square of a Bessel function whose argument exceeds its order. This function has already been encountered in the analysis of the emission from a polarization current with a superluminal distribution pattern: a current whose distribution pattern rotates (with an angular frequency $ω$) and oscillates (with a frequency $Ω>ω$ differing from an integral multiple of $ω$) at the same time (Ardavan H., Ardavan A. & Singleton J., 2003, J Opt Soc Am A, 20, 2137). Using the results of our earlier analysis, we find that the dependence on frequency of the spacing and width of the observed emission bands can be quantitatively accounted for by an appropriate choice of the value of the single free parameter $Ω/ω$. In addition, the value of this parameter, thus implied by Hankins & Eilek's data, places the last peak in the amplitude of the oscillating Bessel function in question at a frequency ($\simΩ^3/ω^2$) that agrees with the position of the observed ultraviolet peak in the spectrum of the Crab pulsar. We also show how the suppression of the emission bands by the interference of the contributions from differring polarizations can account for the differences in the time and frequency signatures of the interpulse and the main pulse in the Crab pulsar. Finally, we put the emission bands in the context of the observed continuum spectrum of the Crab pulsar by fitting this broadband spectrum (over 16 orders of magnitude of frequency) with that generated by an electric current with a superluminally rotating distribution pattern.

The ESRF TANGO control system status

TANGO is an object oriented control system toolkit based on CORBA presently under development at the ESRF. IN this paper, the TANGO philosophy is briefly presented. All the existing tools developed around TANGO will also be presented. This include a code genrator, a WEB interface to TANGO objects, an administration tool and an interface to LabView. Finally, an xample of a TANGO device server for OPC device is given.

Modernising the ESRF control system with GNU/Linux

he ESRF control system is in the process of being modernised. The present contrsystem is based on VME, 10 MHz Ethernet, OS9, Solaris, HP-UX, NFS/RPC, Motif and C. The new control system will be based on compact PCI, 100 MHz Ethernet, Linux, Windows, Solaris, CORBA/IIOP, C++, Java and Python. The main frontend operating system will be GNU/Linux running on Intel/x86 and Motorola/68k. Linux will also be used on handheld devices for mobile control. This poster describes how GNU/Linux is being used to modernise the control system and what problems have been encountered so far

Computer simulation of the microstructure and rheology of semi-solid alloys under shear

The rheological behavior of metallic alloys containing both solid and liquid phases is investigated in the low solid fraction range (<50%). This behavior depends on both the solid fraction and the shear rate. The concept of Effective Volume Fraction (EVF) is used to decorrelate the influence of these two parameters. At high shear rate the slurry behaves like a suspension of hard spheres, whereas at lower shear rate, particles tend to aggregate in clusters, entrapping liquid and thus, increasing the EVF and the viscosity. A lattice model is introduced to simulate the aggregation / break-up processes within a slurry under shear. When the steady state is reached, the entrapped liquid fraction is calculated, leading to a viscosity estimation. Simulation results for the viscosity and 3D cluster structure are in good agreement with experimental results.
