Deep VISTA observations of the Magellanic Clouds (VMCDeep)

The central regions of galaxies challenge observers with a high density of stars, gas and dust. The LMC hosts a dense stellar bar whereas the SMC hosts a dense core, which have eluded even the most sensitive large-scale wide-field surveys of individual stars from the ground and from space. This work describes deep imaging observations obtained with VISTA of the inner regions of the Clouds. They were obtained to resolve stars fainter than the red clump, that due to crowding were missed in previous observations, and to quantify features associated with the star formation, kinematics and structure of the galaxies. These studies will allow us to establish how the dynamical interactions between the LMC and the SMC, and the interaction between the Clouds and the Milky Way have influenced the most gravitationally bound regions. Multiple near-infrared images were obtained in the J and Ks filters during excellent weather conditions. The data were reduced using the VDFS which provides single-filter and band-merged calibrated images and catalogues, with associated confidence maps, for individual observations and combined observations for deep tiles. Approximately one million sources, with only minor quality issues and about 40 epochs per filter, are detected in the central 1.77 sq. deg. They provide a more contiguous spatial area coverage than sources in the VMC survey, which covers the same regions by overlapping two VISTA tiles per galaxy. The catalogues, which are made available with this work, contain attributes to select unique good quality detections for which we provide examples of ongoing scientific applications. These data represent valuable complementary information to deep imaging observations at other wavelengths and provide additional epochs for proper motion and photometric variability studies extending the time baseline to 11 yr, as well as targets for spectroscopic observations.

ESO User Support and Observation Preparation for VLTI Science Operations

We present recent enhancements to VLTI observing capabilities from a user-oriented perspective, together with new developments in ESO's Observation Handling Tools and end-to-end operations model for VLTI. Key upgrades include GRAVITY+ Coud\'e guiding with laser guide stars at the UTs, improved limiting magnitudes for GRAVITY and MATISSE, and a new MATISSE narrow-field off-axis mode, all supported by a streamlined, uniform template structure. Phase 2 tools now enable finding-chart generation and the selection of Coud\'e guide stars and fringe-tracker targets, and will soon offer expanded preparation features and uv-coverage visualisation. We summarise usage statistics for snapshot, astrometric, imaging, and time-series observations, outline VLTI scheduling considerations, and present new video tutorials. Starting in 2026, an archive data stream of reduced GRAVITY dispersed visibilities has become available. Complementary community engagement in VLTI operations continues to grow. We close by identifying operational lessons for future interferometric facilities, including the importance of an end-to-end data-flow and user-support model, flexible scheduling, high-level observation-preparation tools, and coordinated community support to keep complex interferometric facilities usable by a broad community.

Probing the Structure of the Accretion Region in a Sample of Magnetic Herbig Ae/Be Stars

We present the results of a study of the temporal behaviour of several diagnostic lines formed in the region of the accretion-disk/star interaction in the three magnetic Herbig Ae stars HD101412, HD104237, and HD190073. More than 100 spectra acquired with the ISAAC, X-shooter, and CRIRES spectrographs installed at the VLT-8m telescope (ESO, Chile), as well as at other observatories (OHP, Crimean AO) were analyzed. The spectroscopic data were obtained in the He I lambda10830, Pa gamma and He I lambda5876 lines. We found that the temporal behaviour of the diagnostic lines in the spectra of all program stars can be widely explained by a rotational modulation of the line profiles generated by a local accretion flow. This result is in good agreement with the predictions of the magnetospheric accretion model. For the first time, the rotation period of HD104237 (P_rot = 5.37+-0.03 days), as well as the inclination angle (i = 21+-4deg) were determined. Additional analysis of the HARPSpol spectra of HD104237 and HD190073, taken from the ESO archive, with the use of the SVD method shows that the magnetic field structure of HD190073 is likely more complex than a simple dipole and contains a circumstellar component. For the first time, the magnetic field of the secondary component of the binary system HD104237 was also detected ( = 128+-10G).

VLTI monitoring of the dust formation event of the Nova V1280 Sco

We present the first high spatial resolution monitoring of the dust forming nova V1280 Sco performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Spectra and visibilities were obtained from the onset of the dust formation 23 days after discovery till day 145, using the instruments AMBER and MIDI. These interferometric observations are complemented by near-infrared data from the 1.2m Mt. Abu Infrared Observatory, India. The observations are first interpreted with simple models but more complex models, involving a second shell, are necessary to explain the data obtained from t=110d after outburst. This behavior is in accordance with the light curve of V1280 Sco which exhibits a secondary peak around t=106d, followed by a new steep decline, suggesting a new dust forming event. Spherical dust shell models generated with the DUSTY code are also used to investigate the parameters of the main dust shell. Using uniform disk and Gaussian models, these observations allow us to determine an apparent linear expansion rate for the dust shell of 0.35 +/- 0.03 mas/day and the approximate time of ejection of the matter in which dust formed as t_ejec=10.5+/-7d, i.e. close to the maximum brightness. This information, combined with the expansion velocity of 500+/-100km/s, implies a distance estimate of 1.6+/-0.4kpc. The dust mass generated was typically 2-8 10^-9 solar mass per day. Considering that the dust forming event lasted at least 200-250d, the mass of the ejected material is likely to have exceeded 10^-4 solar mass.
