HLbL contribution to the muon g-2 using twisted-mass fermions at the physical point

We present updated results for the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The calculations are based on ETMC's $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson-clover twisted-mass ensembles at the physical point. We perform continuum extrapolations for the strange- and charm-quark connected contributions and report on our results for the light-quark connected and light-quark 2+2 disconnected contributions at one lattice spacing.

Pion Transition Form Factor from Twisted-Mass Lattice QCD and the Hadronic Light-by-Light $\pi^0$-pole Contribution to the Muon $g-2$

The neutral pion generates the leading pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light tensor, which is given in terms of the nonperturbative transition form factor $\mathcal{F}_{\pi^0\gamma\gamma}(q_1^2,q_2^2)$. Here we present an ab-initio lattice calculation of this quantity in the continuum and at the physical point using twisted-mass lattice QCD. We report our results for the transition form factor parameterized using a model-independent conformal expansion valid for arbitrary space-like kinematics and compare it with experimental measurements of the single-virtual form factor, the two-photon decay width, and the slope parameter. We then use the transition form factors to compute the pion-pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muon $g-2$, finding $a_\mu^{\pi^0\text{-pole}} = 56.7(3.2) \times 10^{-11}$.

Time windows of the muon HVP from twisted-mass lattice QCD

We present a lattice determination of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$, in the so-called short and intermediate time-distance windows, $a_μ^{\rm SD}$ and $a_μ^{\rm W}$. We employ gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks with masses of all the dynamical quark flavours tuned close to their physical values. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing equal to $\simeq 0.057, 0.068$ and $0.080$ fm with spatial lattice sizes up to $L \simeq 7.6$~fm. For the short distance window we obtain $a_μ^{\rm SD} = 69.27\,(34) \cdot 10^{-10}$, in agreement with the dispersive determination based on experimental $e^+ e^-$ data. For the intermediate window we get instead $a_μ^{\rm W} = 236.3\,(1.3) \cdot 10^{-10}$, which is consistent with recent determinations by other lattice collaborations, but disagrees with the dispersive determination at the level of $3.6\,σ$.

Lattice calculation of the short and intermediate time-distance hadronic vacuum polarization contributions to the muon magnetic moment using twisted-mass fermions

We present a lattice determination of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$, in the so-called short and intermediate time-distance windows, $a_μ^{\rm SD}$ and $a_μ^{\rm W}$, defined by the RBC/UKQCD Collaboration [1]. We employ gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ flavors of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks with masses of all the dynamical quark flavors tuned close to their physical values. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing equal to $\simeq 0.057, 0.068$ and $0.080$ fm with spatial lattice sizes up to $L \simeq 7.6$~fm. For the short distance window we obtain $a_μ^{\rm SD}({\rm ETMC}) = 69.27\,(34) \cdot 10^{-10}$, which is consistent with the recent dispersive value of $a_μ^{\rm SD}(e^+ e^-) = 68.4\,(5) \cdot 10^{-10}$ [2]. In the case of the intermediate window we get the value $a_μ^{\rm W}({\rm ETMC}) = 236.3\,(1.3) \cdot 10^{-10}$, which is consistent with the result $a_μ^{\rm W}({\rm BMW}) = 236.7\,(1.4) \cdot 10^{-10}$ [3] by the BMW collaboration as well as with the recent determination by the CLS/Mainz group of $a_μ^{\rm W}({\rm CLS}) = 237.30\,(1.46) \cdot 10^{-10}$ [4]. However, it is larger than the dispersive result of $a_μ^{\rm W}(e^+ e^-) = 229.4\,(1.4) \cdot 10^{-10}$ [2] by approximately $3.6$ standard deviations. The tension increases to approximately $4.5$ standard deviations if we average our ETMC result with those by BMW and CLS/Mainz. Our accurate lattice results in the short and intermediate windows point to a possible deviation of the $e^+ e^-$ cross section data with respect to Standard Model predictions in the low and intermediate energy regions, but not in the high energy region.

Isospin-0 $ππ$ s-wave scattering length from twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the isospin-0 $ππ$ s-wave scattering length calculated with Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on Wilson twisted mass gauge configurations. We use three $N_f = 2$ ensembles with unitary (valence) pion mass at its physical value (250$\sim$MeV), at 240$\sim$MeV (320$\sim$MeV) and at 330$\sim$MeV (400$\sim$MeV), respectively. By using the stochastic Laplacian Heaviside quark smearing method, all quark propagation diagrams contributing to the isospin-0 $ππ$ correlation function are computed with sufficient precision. The chiral extrapolation is performed to obtain the scattering length at the physical pion mass. Our result $M_πa^\mathrm{I=0}_0 = 0.198(9)(6)$ agrees reasonably well with various experimental measurements and theoretical predictions. Since we only use one lattice spacing, certain systematics uncertainties, especially those arising from unitary breaking, are not controlled in our result.

First Physics Results at the Physical Pion Mass from $N_f = 2$ Wilson Twisted Mass Fermions at Maximal Twist

We present physics results from simulations of QCD using $N_f = 2$ dynamical Wilson twisted mass fermions at the physical value of the pion mass. These simulations were enabled by the addition of the clover term to the twisted mass quark action. We show evidence that compared to previous simulations without this term, the pion mass splitting due to isospin breaking is almost completely eliminated. Using this new action, we compute the masses and decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons involving the dynamical up and down as well as valence strange and charm quarks at one value of the lattice spacing, $a \approx 0.09$ fm. Further, we determine renormalized quark masses as well as their scale-independent ratios, in excellent agreement with other lattice determinations in the continuum limit. In the baryon sector, we show that the nucleon mass is compatible with its physical value and that the masses of the $Δ$ baryons do not show any sign of isospin breaking. Finally, we compute the electron, muon and tau lepton anomalous magnetic moments and show the results to be consistent with extrapolations of older ETMC data to the continuum and physical pion mass limits. We mostly find remarkably good agreement with phenomenology, even though we cannot take the continuum and thermodynamic limits.

Isospin-0 $ππ$ scattering from twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the isospin-0 $ππ$ s-wave scattering length calculated in twisted mass lattice QCD. We use three $N_f = 2$ ensembles with unitary pion mass at its physical value, 240~MeV and 330~MeV respectively. We also use a large set of $N_f = 2 + 1 +1$ ensembles with unitary pion masses varying in the range of 230~MeV - 510~MeV at three different values of the lattice spacing. A mixed action approach with the Osterwalder-Seiler action in the valence sector is adopted to circumvent the complications arising from isospin symmetry breaking of the twisted mass quark action. Due to the relatively large lattice artefacts in the $N_f = 2 + 1 +1$ ensembles, we do not present the scattering lengths for these ensembles. Instead, taking the advantage of the many different pion masses of these ensembles, we qualitatively discuss the pion mass dependence of the scattering properties of this channel based on the results from the $N_f = 2 + 1 +1$ ensembles. The scattering length is computed for the $N_f = 2$ ensembles and the chiral extrapolation is performed. At the physical pion mass, our result $M_πa^\mathrm{I=0}_0 = 0.198(9)(6)$ agrees reasonably well with various experimental measurements and theoretical predictions.

Neutron electric dipole moment using $N_f{=}2{+}1{+}1$ twisted mass fermions

We evaluate the neutron electric dipole moment $\vert \vec{d}_N\vert$ using lattice QCD techniques. The gauge configurations analyzed are produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration using $N_f{=}2{+}1{+}1$ twisted mass fermions at one value of the lattice spacing of $a \simeq 0.082 \ {\rm fm}$ and a light quark mass corresponding to $m_π \simeq 373 \ {\rm MeV}$. Our approach to extract the neutron electric dipole moment is based on the calculation of the $CP$-odd electromagnetic form factor $F_3(Q^2)$ for small values of the vacuum angle $θ$ in the limit of zero Euclidean momentum transfer $Q^2$. The limit $Q^2 \to 0$ is realized either by adopting a parameterization of the momentum dependence of $F_3(Q^2)$ and performing a fit, or by employing new position space methods, which involve the elimination of the kinematical momentum factor in front of $F_3(Q^2)$. The computation in the presence of a $CP$-violating term requires the evaluation of the topological charge ${\cal Q}$. This is computed by applying the cooling technique and the gradient flow with three different actions, namely the Wilson, the Symanzik tree-level improved and the Iwasaki action. We demonstrate that cooling and gradient flow give equivalent results for the neutron electric dipole moment. Our analysis yields a value of $\vert \vec{d}_N\vert=0.045(6)(1)\ \barθ \ e \cdot {\rm fm}$ for the ensemble with $m_π=373$ MeV considered.

Determination of the Delta resonance width from lattice QCD

A method suitable for extracting resonance parameters of unstable baryons in lattice QCD is examined. The method is applied to the strong decay of the Delta to a pion-nucleon state, extracting the pi-N - Delta coupling constant and Delta decay width.

Hadronic Vacuum Polarization Contribution to g-2 from the Lattice

We give a short description of the present situation of lattice QCD simulations. We then focus on the computation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon using lattice techniques. We demonstrate that by employing improved observables for the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a significant reduction of the lattice error can be obtained. This provides a promising scenario that the accuracy of lattice calculations can match the experimental errors.

Average up/down, strange and charm quark masses with Nf=2 twisted mass lattice QCD

We present a high precision lattice calculation of the average up/down, strange and charm quark masses performed with Nf=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions. The analysis includes data at four values of the lattice spacing and pion masses as low as ~270 MeV, allowing for accurate continuum limit and chiral extrapolation. The strange and charm masses are extracted by using several methods, based on different observables: the kaon and the eta_s meson for the strange quark and the D, D_s and eta_c mesons for the charm. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI-MOM method. The results for the quark masses in the MSbar scheme read: m_ud(2 GeV)= 3.6(2) MeV, m_s(2 GeV)=95(6) MeV and m_c(m_c)=1.28(4) GeV. We also obtain the ratios m_s/m_ud=27.3(9) and m_c/m_s=12.0(3).

Moreover, we provide the updated result for the bottom quark mass, m_b(m_b)=4.3(2) GeV, obtained using the method presented in 0909.3187 [hep-lat].

Phase structure of thermal lattice QCD with N_f=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions

We present numerical results for the phase diagram of lattice QCD at finite temperature in the formulation with twisted mass Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action. Our simulations are performed on lattices with temporal extent N_τ=8, and lattice coupling βranging from strong coupling to the scaling domain. Covering a wide range in the space spanned by the lattice coupling βand the hopping and twisted mass parameters κand μ, respectively, we obtain a comprehensive picture of the rich phase structure of the lattice theory. In particular, we verify the existence of an Aoki phase in the strong coupling region and the realisation of the Sharpe-Singleton scenario at intermediate couplings. In the weak coupling region we identify the phase boundary for the physical finite temperature phase transition/crossover. Its shape in the three-dimensional parameter space is consistent with Creutz's conjecture of a cone-shaped thermal transition surface.

The finite-temperature phase structure of lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions

We report progress in our exploration of the finite-temperature phase structure of two-flavour lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action for a temporal lattice size N_τ=8. Extending our investigations to a wider region of parameter space we gain a global view of the rich phase structure. We identify the finite temperature transition/crossover for a non-vanishing twisted-mass parameter in the neighbourhood of the zero-temperature critical line at sufficiently high β. Our findings are consistent with Creutz's conjecture of a conical shape of the finite temperature transition surface. Comparing with NLO lattice chiral perturbation theory we achieve an improved understanding of this shape.

Twisted mass QCD at finite temperature

We discuss the use of Wilson fermions with twisted mass for simulations of QCD thermodynamics. As a prerequisite for a future analysis of the finite-temperature transition making use of automatic O(a) improvement, we investigate the phase structure in the space spanned by the hopping parameter kappa, the coupling beta, and the twisted mass parameter mu. We present results for N_f=2 degenerate quarks on a 16^3x8 lattice, for which we investigate the possibility of an Aoki phase existing at strong coupling and vanishing mu, as well as of a thermal phase transition at moderate gauge couplings and non-vanishing mu.
