Neutrino Dipole Moments and Solar Experiments

First we investigate the possibility of detecting solar antineutrinos with the KamLAND experiment. Then we analyze the first Borexino data release to constrain the neutrino magnetic moment. Finally we investigate the resonant spin flavour conversion of solar neutrinos to sterile ones, a mechanism which is added to the well known LMA one. In this last condition, we show that the data from all solar neutrino experiments except Borexino exhibit a clear preference for a sizable magnetic field. We argue that the solar neutrino experiments are capable of tracing the possible modulation of the solar magnetic field. In this way Borexino alone may play an essential role although experimental redundancy from other experiments will be most important.

Probing neutrino magnetic moment and unparticle interactions with Borexino

We discuss the limits on the neutrino magnetic moment and hypothetical interactions with a hidden unparticle sector, coming from the first neutrino data release of the Borexino experiment. The observed spectrum in Borexino depends weakly on the solar model used in the analysis, since most of the signal comes from the mono-energetic 7Be neutrinos. This fact allows us to calibrate the nu-e scattering cross section through the spectral shape. In this way, we have derived a limit on the magnetic moment for the neutrinos coming from the Sun (in which a nu_mu and nu_tau component is present): mu_nu<8.4E-11 mu_B (90%CL) which is comparable with those obtained from low energy reactor experiments. Moreover, we improve the previous upper limit on magnetic moment of the nu_tau by three orders of magnitude and the limit on the coupling constant of the neutrino with a hidden unparticle sector.

Embedding A4 into SU(3)xU(1) flavor symmetry: Large neutrino mixing and fermion mass hierarchy in SO(10) GUT

We present a common explanation of the fermion mass hierarchy and the large lepton mixing angles in the context of a grand unified flavor and gauge theory (GUTF). Our starting point is a SU(3)xU(1) flavor symmetry and a SO(10) GUT, a basic ingredient of our theory which plays a major role is that two different breaking pattern of the flavor symmetry are at work. On one side, the dynamical breaking of SU(3)xU(1) flavor symmetry into U(2)xZ_3 explains why one family is much heavier than the others. On the other side, an explicit symmetry breaking of SU(3) into a discrete flavor symmetry leads to the observed tribimaximal mixing for the leptons. We write an explicit model where this discrete symmetry group is A4. Naturalness of the charged fermion mass hierarchy appears as a consequence of the continuous SU(3) flavor symmetry. Moreover, the same discrete A4-GUT invariant operators are the root of the large lepton mixing, small Cabibbo angle, and neutrino masses.

Flavour physics of leptons and dipole moments

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

Analysis of Neutrino oscillation data with the recent KamLAND results

We present an updated analysis of all available solar and reactor neutrino data, emphasizing in particular the totality of the KamLAND results and including the SNO phase III spectrum data. In a two active-neutrino framework, we determine the solutions in the $Δm_{\odot}^2, \tan^2θ_{\odot}$ parameter space compatible with experimental data. Combining all data, we obtain the following best-fit parameters: $Δm_{\odot}^2 =8.17*10^-5$, $\tan^2θ_{\odot}=0.40$

The Neutrino mass matrix after Kamland and SNO salt enhanced results

An updated analysis of all available neutrino oscillation evidence in Solar experiments including the latest SNO ES,CC and NC data (254d live time, NaCL enhanced efficiency) is presented. We obtain, for the fraction of active oscillating neutrinos: sin^2alpha=(Φ_{NC}-Φ_{CC})/(Φ_{SSM}-Φ_{CC})=0.94^{+0.0.065}_{-0.060} nearly 20σfrom the pure sterile oscillation case. The fraction of oscillating sterile neutrinos cos^2α\lsim 0.12 (1 sigma CL). At face value, these results might slightly favour the existence of a small sterile oscillating sector. In the framework of two active neutrino oscillations we determine individual neutrino mixing parameters and their errors we obtain Delta m^2= 7.01\pm 0.08 \times 10^{-5} eV^2, tan^2 theta=0.42^{+0.12}_{-0.07}. The main difference with previous analysis is a better resolution in parameter space. In particular the secondary region at larger mass differences (LMAII) is now excluded at 95% CL. The combined analysis of solar and Kamland data concludes that maximal mixing is not favoured at 4-5 sigma. This is not supported by the antineutrino reactor results alone. We estimate the individual elements of the two neutrino mass matrix, writing M^2=m^2 I+M_0^2, we obtain (1 sigma errors): M_0^2=10^{-5} eV^2\pmatrix{ 2.06^{+0.29}_{-0.31} & 3.15^{+0.29}_{-0.35} \cr 3.15^{+0.29}_{-0.35} & 4.60^{+0.56}_{-0.44} }.

Neutrino mass parameters from Kamland, SNO and other solar evidence

An updated analysis of all available neutrino oscillation evidence in Reactor (Kamland, first 145 days of data) and Solar experiments (SK day and night spectra, global rates from Homestake, SAGE and GALLEX) including the $SNO CC$ and $NC$ data is presented. In the framework of two active neutrino oscillations we determine the allowed regions in neutrino parameter space, we obtain, from the Kamland spectral shape and global signal, the following antineutrino best solution parameters, $ Δm^2_{kl}= 7.7\times 10^{-5} \eV^2, \tan^2θ_{kl}= 0.98.$ The overall effect of the measured observed ratio $R\sim 0.6$ is that the LMA region remains the only one which is still favored. Combining Kamland and Solar data and assuming CPT invariance, i.e. the same mass matrix for neutrino and antineutrinos, we obtain the following antineutrino best solution parameters (LMAI solution), $ Δm^2= 7.1\times 10^{-5} \eV^2,\tan^2θ= 0.47.$ A second solution (LMAII) appears for values $ Δm^2= 1.5\times 10^{-4} \eV^2, \tan^2θ= 0.48.$ We determine additionally individual neutrino mixing parameters and their errors from fits to marginal likelihood distributions, the values are compatible with previous results. In both methods, $χ^2$ minimization and marginal likelihood, the combined analysis of solar and Kamland data concludes that maximal mixing is not favored at the $\sim 3σ$ level at least.

Hamevol1.0: a C++ code for differential equations based on Runge-Kutta algorithm. An application to matter enhanced neutrino oscillation

We present a C++ implementation of a fifth order semi-implicit Runge-Kutta algorithm for solving Ordinary Differential Equations. This algorithm can be used for studying many different problems and in particular it can be applied for computing the evolution of any system whose Hamiltonian is known. We consider in particular the problem of calculating the neutrino oscillation probabilities in presence of matter interactions. The time performance and the accuracy of this implementation is competitive with respect to the other analytical and numerical techniques used in literature. The algorithm design and the salient features of the code are presented and discussed and some explicit examples of code application are given.

The anomalous dimension of the gluon-ghost mass operator in Yang-Mills theory

The local composite gluon-ghost operator $({1/2}A^{aμ}A_μ^{a}+α\bar{c}^{a}c^{a})$ is analysed in the framework of the algebraic renormalization in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories in the Landau, Curci-Ferrari and maximal abelian gauges. We show, to all orders of perturbation theory, that this operator is multiplicatively renormalizable. Furthermore, its anomalous dimension is not an independent parameter of the theory, being given by a general expression valid in all these gauges. We also verify the relations we obtain for the operator anomalous dimensions by explicit 3-loop calculations in the MSbar scheme for the Curci-Ferrari gauge.

More on ghost condensation in Yang-Mills theory: BCS versus Overhauser effect and the breakdown of the Nakanishi-Ojima annex SL(2,R) symmetry

We analyze the ghost condensates , and in Yang-Mills theory in the Curci-Ferrari gauge. By combining the local composite operator formalism with the algebraic renormalization technique, we are able to give a simultaneous discussion of , and , which can be seen as playing the role of the BCS, respectively Overhauser effect in ordinary superconductivity. The Curci-Ferrari gauge exhibits a global continuous symmetry generated by the Nakanishi-Ojima (NO) algebra. This algebra includes, next to the (anti-)BRST transformation, a SL(2,R) subalgebra. We discuss the dynamical symmetry breaking of the NO algebra through these ghost condensates. Particular attention is paid to the Landau gauge, a special case of the Curci-Ferrari gauge.

Phenomenological implication of KamLAND on lepton mass matrices

By using a model independent Monte Carlo approach, we study the possible structure of charged and neutral lepton mass matrices, under the assumption of an U(2) horizontal symmetry (additional to the usual Standard Model ones) involving the light fermion generations. We assume the most general Majorana mass matrix for neutrinos. We update the results of our previous similar study, by inserting in the analysis the recent KamLAND data, that contributed to find a final solution to the Solar neutrino problem. The introduction of the new experimental data reduce the allowed regions in the nine dimensional space parameters, and show that our procedure gives stable solutions.

Gluon-ghost condensate of mass dimension 2 in the Curci-Ferrari gauge

The effective potential for an on-shell BRST invariant gluon-ghost condensate of mass dimension 2 in the Curci-Ferrari gauge in SU(N) Yang-Mills is analysed by combining the local composite operator technique with the algebraic renormalization. We pay attention to the gauge parameter independence of the vacuum energy obtained in the considered framework and discuss the Landau gauge as an interesting special case.

Neutrino masses and non abelian horizontal symmetries

Recent neutrino experiments have made very significant progresses and our knowledge of neutrino masses and mixing has considerably improved. In a model independent Monte Carlo approach, we have examined a very large class of textures, in the context of non abelian horizontal symmetries; we have found that neutrino data select only those charged lepton matrices with left-right asymmetric texture. The large atmospheric mixing angle needs m_{23} ~= m_{33}. This result,if combined with similar recent findings for the quark sector in the B oscillations, can be interpreted as a hint for SU(5) unification. In the neutrino sector strict neutrino anarchy is disfavored by data, and at least a factor 2 of suppression in the first row and column of the neutrino majorana mass matrix is required.

After Sno and Before Kamland: Present and Future of Solar and Reactor Neutrino Physics

We present a short review of the existing evidence in favor of neutrino mass and neutrino oscillations which come from different kinds of experiments. We focus our attention in particular on solar neutrinos, presenting a review of some recent analysis of all available neutrino oscillation evidence in Solar experiments including the recent $SNO CC$ and $NC$ data. We present in detail the power of the reactor experiment KamLAND for discriminating existing solutions to the SNP and giving accurate information on neutrino masses and mixing angles.
