Orbital domain state and finite size scaling in ferromagnetic insulating manganites

55Mn and 139La NMR measurements on a high quality single crystal of ferromagnetic (FM) La0.80Ca20MnO3 demonstrate the formation of localized Mn(3+,4+) states below 70 K, accompanied with strong anomalous increase of certain FM neutron Bragg peaks. (55,139)(1/T1) spin-lattice relaxation rates diverge on approaching this temperature from below, signalling a genuine phase transition at T(tr) approx. 70 K. The increased local magnetic anisotropy of the low temperature phase, the cooling-rate dependence of the Bragg peaks, and the observed finite size scaling of T(tr) with Ca (hole) doping, are suggestive of freezing into an orbital domain state, precursor to a phase transition into an inhomogeneous orbitally ordered state embodying hole-rich walls.

Peak effect in single crystal MgB$_2$ superconductor for ${\bf H}\parallel c$-axis

We have studied the phase diagram of MgB$_2$ superconductor using a single crystal for ${\bf H}\parallel c$-axis. For the first time we report the existence of peak effect in the screening current in MgB$_{2}$ single crystal for ${\bf H}\parallel c$-axis. In the magnetic field regime $10<H<13.5$ kOe the local fundamental diamagnetic moment displays a very narrow diamagnetic step, with a temperature width of the same size as the zero dc-magnetic field transition. For higher field this step is transformed to a peak which is related with the peak effect in the screening current. Finally, for $H<10$ kOe the diamagnetic step is transformed to a gradual transition. Our findings for the vortex matter phase diagram for the MgB$_2$ are closely related with theoretical predictions concerning the vortex matter phase diagram of a type II superconductor in the presence of weak point disorder.

Phase diagram of the La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compound for $0.5\leq x\leq 0.9$

We have studied the phase diagram of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ for $0.5\leq x\leq 0.9$ using neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements. At 300 K all samples are paramagnetic and single phase with crystallographic symmetry $Pnma$. As the temperature is reduced a structural transition is observed which is to a charge-ordered state only for certain x. On further cooling the material passes to an antiferromagnetic ground state with Neel temperature $T_N$ that depends on x. For $0.8\leq x\leq 0.9$ the structural transformation occurs at the same temperature as the magnetic transition. Overall, the neutron diffraction patterns were explained by considering four phase boundaries for which La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ forms a distinct phase: the CE phase at $x=0.5-0.55$, the charge-ordered phase at x=2/3, the monoclinic and C-type magnetic structure at $x=0.80-0.85$ and the G-type magnetic structure at x=1. Between these phase boundaries the magnetic reflections suggest the existence of mixed compounds containing both phases of the adjacent phase boundaries in a ratio determined by the lever rule.

$^{11}$B and $^{27}$Al NMR spin-lattice relaxation and Knight shift study of Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$. Evidence for anisotropic Fermi surface

We report a detailed study of $^{11}$B and $^{27}$Al NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates ($1/T_1$), as well as of $^{27}$Al Knight shift (K) of Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$, $0\leq x\leq 1$. The obtained ($1/T_1T$) and K vs. x plots are in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations. This asserts experimentally the prediction that the Fermi surface is highly anisotropic, consisting mainly of hole-type 2-D cylindrical sheets from bonding $2p_{x,y}$ boron orbitals. It is also shown that the density of states at the Fermi level decreases sharply on Al doping and the 2-D sheets collapse at $x\approx 0.55$, where the superconductive phase disappears.

Crystal structure of the Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$ superconductors near x=0.5

Precise structural information on the Mg1-xAlxB2 superconductors in the vicinity of x 0.5 is derived from high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements. We find that a hexagonal superstructure, accompanied by doubling of the c-axis, ordering of Mg and Al in alternating layers, and a shift of the B layers towards Al by ~0.1 A, is formed. The unusually large width of the (001/2) superlattice peak implies the presence of microstrain broadening, arising from anisotropic stacking of Al and Mg layers and/or structural modulations within the ab plane. The ordered phase survives only over a limited range of compositions away from the optimum x= 0.5 doping level.

Electrical characterization of YBCO single crystal surfaces oriented in any crystallographic direction

Although considerable studies have been carried out, the true nature of high-Tc superconductors (HTCS) is still not clear. Pseudogap phase at high temperature as well as possible time reversal symmetry breaking at low temperature need further investigations. The need of carefully made samples showing the intrinsic properties of superconductivity is essential to test new theoretical developments. We present in this paper how to control crystallographic orientation in the junction and a technique developed to determined the quality of the interface barrier between a gold electrode and a HTCS : YBCO. This potentially allows us to perform Andreev spectroscopy in the CuO2 planes of cuprate superconductors as a function of temperature, crystallographic orientation and doping.

Crystal and magnetic structure of the La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compound $(x=0.8,0.85)$

We studied the crystal and magnetic structure of the La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compound for $x=0.8$ and $x=0.85$. At T=300 K both samples are paramagnetic with crystallographic symmetry $Pnma$. At low temperatures they undergo a monoclinic distortion from orthorhombic $Pnma$-type structure with $a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2}$ to a monoclinic structure with ($a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2}$, $β=90+ε\sim 91.4^{\rm o}$) and $P2_1/m$ space group below $T_N$. The onset of the structural transformation coincides with the development of the $C$-type long range antiferromagnetic order with propagation vector ${\bf k}=({1/2},0,{1/2})$. The monoclinic unit cell allowed us to determine the direction of the Mn magnetic moment with respect to the crystallographic axes: it is perpendicular to the propagation vector, ${\bf m}\perp {\bf k}=({1/2},0,{1/2})$. The amplitude of the ordered magnetic moment at $T=1.6$ K is found to be $2.53(2)$ and $2.47(2)μ_{B}$ for $x=0.8$ and 0.85, respectively.

A magnetization and $^{11}$B NMR study of Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$ superconductors

We demonstrate for the first time the magnetic field distribution of the pure vortex state in lightly doped Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$ ($x\leq 0.025$) powder samples, by using $^{11}$B NMR in magnetic fields of 23.5 and 47 kOe. The magnetic field distribution at T=5 K is Al-doping dependent, revealing a considerable decrease of anisotropy in respect to pure MgB$_2$. This result correlates nicely with magnetization measurements and is consistent with $σ$-band hole driven superconductivity for MgB$_2$.

Hysteretic behavior of the vortex lattice at the onset of the second peak for HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ superconductor

By means of local Hall probe ac and dc permeability measurements we investigated the phase diagram of vortex matter for the HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ superconductor in the regime near the critical temperature. The second peak line, $H_{\rm sp}$, in contrast to what is usually assumed, doesn't terminate at the critical temperature. Our local ac permeability measurements revealed pronounced hysteretic behavior and thermomagnetic history effects near the onset of the second peak, giving evidence for a phase transition of vortex matter from an ordered qausilattice state to a disordered glass.

Surface barrier and bulk pinning in MgB$_2$ superconductor

We present a modified method of preparation of the new superconductor MgB$_2$. The polycrystalline samples were characterized using x-ray and magnetic measurements. The surface barriers control the isothermal magnetization loops in powder samples. In bulk as prepared samples we always observed symmetric magnetization loops indicative of the presence of a bulk pinning mechanism. Magnetic relaxation measurements in the bulk sample reveal a crossover of surface barrier to bulk pinning.

$^{11}$B NMR detection of the magnetic field distribution in the mixed superconducting state of MgB$_2$

The temperature dependence of the magnetic field distribution in the mixed superconducting phase of randomly oriented MgB$_2$ powder was probed by $% ^{11}$B NMR spectroscopy. Below the temperature of the second critical ($B_{% {c2}}$) field, $T_{c2}\approx 27$K, our spectra reveal two NMR signal components, one mapping the magnetic field distribution in the mixed superconducting state and the other one arising from the normal state. The complementary use of bulk magnetization and NMR measurements reveals that MgB$_2$ is an anisotropic superconductor with a $B_{c2}^c<2.35$ Tesla anisotropy parameter $γ\approx 6$.

Strong-coupling superconductivity due to soft boson modes in MgB_2, cuprates, borocarbides and some heavy fermions

We report micro-Raman measurements that reveal a low-energy soft mode at 16-19 meV in MgB_2 which becomes sharper in the superconducting state. With a boson spectrum based on this mode we reproduce, within Eliashberg theory, the T_c, the T-shape of the NMR relaxation rate as well as unusual dip-hump features in available tunneling data. We compare MgB_2 to cuprates, borocarbides and UPd_2Al_3, where we identify soft bosonic modes at energies which scale with their T_c suggesting that all these materials are very strong coupling superconductors to soft bosonic modes, that are possibly precursors of quantum instabilities.

Phase separation in La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ doped with 1% $^{119}$Sn detected by Mössbauer spectroscopy

1% $^{119}$Sn-doped La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ was studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetic moment and resistivity measurements. The Mössbauer spectra below the charge-ordering temperature are explained with ferromagnetic (FM), antiferromagnetic (AF), and ferromagnetic spin cluster (CL) components. The magnetic and thermal hystereses of the relative intensities of the components observed in the Mössbauer spectra, and of the bulk properties such as magnetic moment and electrical resistivity, in the temperature range 125-185 K, are characteristic of phase equilibrium in a first-order transition, i.e. of phase separation in the system below the charge-ordering (CO) transition. The cluster component displays a significant hyperfine field up to $\sim 125$ K. Above this temperature it exhibits superparamagnetism, becoming the dominant component above the charge-ordering transition. These results are discussed in the framework of recent investigations of the manganite system with other techniques which also show phase separation.
