Fusion of 12C+28Si at deep sub-barrier energies

The existence of fusion hindrance is not well established in light heavy-ion systems. Studying slightly heavier cases allows extrapolating the trend to light systems of astrophysical interest. Fusion of 12C + 28Si has been measured down to deep sub-barrier energies, using 28Si beams from the XTU Tandem accelerator of LNL on thin 12C targets. The fusion-evaporation residues were detected by a detector telescope following an electrostatic beam separator, and coincidences between the gamma-ray array AGATA and segmented silicon detectors DSSD were performed, where the evaporated light charged particles were identified by pulse shape analysis. Fusion cross sections have been obtained in the wide range 150 mb-42 nb. Coupled-channel (CC) calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential reproduce the data above 0.1 mb. Below that, hindrance shows up and the CC results overestimate the cross sections which get close to the one-dimensional potential tunnelling limit. This suggests that the coupling strengths gradually vanish, as predicted by the adiabatic model. The hindrance threshold follows a recently updated phenomenological systematics.

Measurement of the Isolated Nuclear Two-Photon Decay in $^{72}\mathrm{Ge}$

The nuclear two-photon or double-gamma ($2\gamma$) decay is a second-order electromagnetic process whereby a nucleus in an excited state emits two gamma rays simultaneously. To be able to directly measure the $2\gamma$ decay rate in the low-energy regime below the electron-positron pair-creation threshold, we combined the isochronous mode of a storage ring with Schottky resonant cavities. The newly developed technique can be applied to isomers with excitation energies down to $\sim100$\,keV and half-lives as short as $\sim10$\,ms. The half-life for the $2\gamma$ decay of the first-excited $0^+$ state in bare $^{72}\mathrm{Ge}$ ions was determined to be $23.9\left(6\right)$\,ms, which strongly deviates from expectations.

Electric monopole transitions and low-lying level structure in 106Pd

The structure of 106Pd, populated in the EC/beta+ decay of 106Ag, was investigated at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories using the Spes Low-energy Internal Conversion Electron Spectrometer (SLICES). The K-internal conversion coefficients of some transitions have been measured and the electric monopole transition strengths, between low-lying 2+ and 0+ states, have been deduced. These experimental data combined with the results from internal conversion electron measurement on 104Pd previously performed by the Florence spectroscopy group were compared with the theoretical values calculated in the framework of the interacting proton-neutron boson model. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical values is found when interpreting the 0+3 level as an intruder state.

Tightening the uncertainty principle for stochastic currents

We connect two recent advances in the stochastic analysis of nonequilibrium systems: the (loose) uncertainty principle for the currents, which states that statistical errors are bounded by thermodynamic dissipation; and the analysis of thermodynamic consistency of the currents in the light of symmetries. Employing the large deviation techniques presented in [Gingrich et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2016] and [Pietzonka et al., Phys. Rev. E 2016], we provide a short proof of the loose uncertainty principle, and prove a tighter uncertainty relation for a class of thermodynamically consistent currents $J$. Our bound involves a measure of partial entropy production, that we interpret as the least amount of entropy that a system sustaining current $J$ can possibly produce, at a given steady state. We provide a complete mathematical discussion of quadratic bounds which allows to determine which are optimal, and finally we argue that the relationship for the Fano factor of the entropy production rate $\mathrm{var}\, σ/ \mathrm{mean}\, σ\geq 2$ is the most significant realization of the loose bound. We base our analysis both on the formalism of diffusions, and of Markov jump processes in the light of Schnakenberg's cycle analysis.
