Slow magnetic dynamics and hysteresis loops of a bulk ferromagnet

Magnetic dynamics of a bulk ferromagnet, a new single crystalline compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6, was studied by ac susceptibility and the related techniques. Very large Arrhenius activation energy of 17.2 meV (201 K) and long attempt time (2x10^(-4)s) span the full spectrum of magnetic dynamics inside a convenient frequency window, offering a rare opportunity for general studies of magnetic dynamics. Within the experimental window the ac susceptibility data build almost ideally semicircular Cole-Cole plots. Comprehensive study of experimental dynamic hysteresis loops of the compound is presented and interpreted within a simple thermal-activation-assisted spin lattice relaxation model for spin reversal. Quantitative agreement between the experimental results and the model's prediction for dynamic coercive field is achieved by assuming the central physical quantity, the Debye relaxation rate, to depend on frequency, as well as on the applied field strength and sample temperature. Cross-over between minor- to major hysteresis loops is carefully analyzed. Low-frequency limitations of the model, relying on domain wall pinning effects, are experimentally detected and appropriately discussed.

Ferromagnetism in Co7(TeO3)4Br6: A byproduct of complex antiferromagnetic order and single-ion anisotropy

Pronounced anisotropy of magnetic properties and complex magnetic order of a new oxi-halide compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6 has been investigated by powder and single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization and ac susceptibility techniques. Anisotropy of susceptibility extends far into the paramagnetic temperature range. A principal source of anisotropy are anisotropic properties of the involved octahedrally coordinated single Co(2+) ions, as confirmed by angular-overlap-model calculations presented in this work. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order sets in at TN=34 K. Propagation vector is strongly temperature dependent reaching k1=(0.9458(6), 0, 0.6026(5)) at 30 K. A transition to a ferrimagnetic structure with k2=0 takes place at TC=27 K. Magnetically ordered phase is characterized by very unusual anisotropy as well: while M-H scans along b-axis reveals spectacularly rectangular but otherwise standard ferromagnetic hysteresis loops, M-H studies along other two principal axes are perfectly reversible, revealing very sharp spin flop (or spin flip) transitions, like in a standard antiferromagnet (or metamagnet). Altogether, the observed magnetic phenomenology is interpreted as an evidence of competing magnetic interactions permeating the system, first of all of the single ion anisotropy energy and the exchange interactions. Different coordinations of the Co(2+)-ions involved in the low-symmetry C2/c structure of Co7(TeO3)4Br6 render the exchange-interaction network very complex by itself. Temperature dependent changes in the magnetic structure, together with an abrupt emergence of a ferromagnetic component, are ascribed to continual spin reorientations described by a multi-component, but yet unknown, spin Hamiltonian.

Non-uniform doping across the Fermi surface of NbS$_2$ intercalates

Magnetic ordering of the first row transition metal intercalates of NbS$_2$ due to coupling between the conduction electrons and the intercalated ions has been explained in terms of Fermi surface nesting. We use angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the Fermi surface topology and the valence band structure of the quasi-two-dimensional layer compounds Mn$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ and Ni$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$. Charge transfer from the intercalant species to the host layer leads to non-uniform, pocket selective doping of the Fermi surface. The implication of our results on the nesting properties are discussed.

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl, Br) studied by single crystal neutron diffraction

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction studies have been carried out on single crystals of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl, Br). A model of the magnetic structure associated with the propagation vectors k'Cl ~ -0.150,0.422,1/2 and k'Br ~ -0.172,0.356,1/2 and stable below TN=18 K for X=Cl and TN=11 K for X=Br is proposed. A feature of the model, common to both the bromide and chloride, is a canted coplanar motif for the 4 Cu2+ spins on each tetrahedron which rotates on a helix from cell to cell following the propagation vector. The Cu2+magnetic moment determined for X=Br, 0.395(5)muB, is significantly less than for X=Cl, 0.88(1)muB at 2K. The magnetic structure of the chloride associated with the wave-vector k' differs from that determined previously for the wave vector k~0.150,0.422,1/2 [O. Zaharko et.al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 217206 (2004)].

Two component butterfly hysteresis in Ru1222 ruthenocuprate

We report detailed studies of the ac susceptibility butterfly hysteresis on the Ru1222 ruthenocuprate compounds. Two separate contributions to these hysteresis have been identified and studied. One contribution is ferromagnetic-like and is characterized by the coercive field maximum. Another contribution, represented by the so called inverted maximum, is related to the unusual inverted loops, unique feature of Ru1222 butterfly hysteresis. The different nature of the two identified magnetic contributions is proved by the different temperature dependences involved. By lowering the temperature the inverted peak gradually disappears while the coercive field slowly raises. If the maximum dc field for the hysteresis is increased, the size of the inverted part of the butterfly hysteresis monotonously grows while the position of the peak saturates. In reaching saturation exponential field dependence has been demonstrated to take place. At T = 78 K the saturation field is 42 Oe.

Three Dimensional Spin Web: A New Magnetic Lattice in Cu3TeO6

We report on magnetic properties of cubic compound Cu3TeO6 studied by $ac$ and $dc$ susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction for the first time. A novel magnetic lattice, three dimensional spin web, composed of almost planar regular hexagons of Cu2+, S =1/2 spins, defines the properties of Cu3TeO6. The behavior of the magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic state at approximately 170 K is suggestive for a competition between local anisotropies of Cu2+ hexagons. The resulting frustration is weaker than the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction which leads to a collinear (or slightly canted) spin arrangement (k=0,0,0) and formation of magnetic domains below TN=61 K.

Ground state order and spin-lattice coupling in tetrahedral spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2

High-resolution ac susceptibility and thermal conductivity measurement on Cu2Te2O5X2(X=Br,Cl) single crystals are reported. For Br-sample, sample dependence prevents to distinguish between possibilities of magnetically ordered and spin-singlet ground states. In Cl-sample a three-dimensional transition at 18.5 K is accompanied by almost isotropic behavior of susceptibility and almost switching behavior of thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity studies suggest the presence of a tremendous spin-lattice coupling characterizing Cl- but not Br-sample. Below the transition Cl-sample is in a complex magnetic state involving AF order but also the elements consistent with the presence of a gap in the excitation spectrum.

Influence of internal disorder on the superconducting state in the organic layered superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br

We report high-sensitivity AC susceptibility measurements of the penetration depth in the Meissner state of the layered organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br. We have studied nominally pure single crystals from the two different syntheses and employed controlled cooling procedures in order to minimize intrinsic remnant disorder at low temperatures associated with the glass transition, caused by ordering of the ethylene moieties in BEDT-TTF molecule at T_G = 75 K. We find that the optimal cooling procedures (slow cooling of -0.2 K/h or annealing for 3 days in the region of T_G) needed to establish the ground state, depend critically on the sample origin indicating different relaxation times of terminal ethylene groups. We show that, in the ground state, the behavior observed for nominally pure single crystals from both syntheses is consistent with unconventional d-wave order parameter. The in-plane penetration depth lambda_in(T) is strongly linear, whereas the out-of-plane component lambda_out(T) varies as T^2. In contrast, the behavior of single crystals with long relaxation times observed after slow (-0.2 K/h) cooling is as expected for a d-wave superconductor with impurities (i.e. lambda_in(T) propto lambda_out(T) propto T^2) or might be also reasonably well described by the s-wave model. Our results might reconcile the contradictory findings previously reported by different authors.

Ruthenocuprates RuSr2(Eu,Ce)2Cu2O10: Intrinsic magnetic multilayers

We report ac susceptibility data on RuSr_2(Eu,Ce)_2Cu_2O_(10-y) (Ru-1222, Ce content x=0.5 and 1.0), RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 (Ru-1212) and SrRuO_3. Both Ru-1222 (x=0.5, 1.0) sample types exhibit unexpected magnetic dynamics in low magnetic fields: logarithmic time relaxation, switching behavior, and `inverted' hysteresis loops. Neither Ru-1212 nor SrRuO_3 exhibit such magnetic dynamics. The results are interpreted as evidence of the complex magnetic order in Ru-1222. We propose a specific multilayer model to explain the data, and note that superconductivity in the ruthenocuprate is compatible with both the presence and absence of the magnetic dynamics.

Ruthenocuprates: Intrinsic magnetic multilayers

We report ac susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of SrRuO_3 and three ruthenocuprates: superconducting RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 (Ru-1212), superconducting RuSr_2Eu_(2-x)Ce_xCu_2O_y (Ru-1222, x=0.5) and nonsuperconducting, insulating RuSr_2Eu_(2-x)Ce_xCu_2O_z (Ru-1222, x=1.0). Ac susceptibility of both Ru-1222 compositions exhibit logarithmic time relaxation and `inverted' hysteresis loops. Ru-1212 samples exhibit none of these behaviors. We interpret the magnetic behavior of Ru-1222 in the framework of weakly coupled magnetic multilayers and argue that superconductivity coexists with qualitatively different magnetic behaviors.
