Dynamics of ternary Cu-Fe-S2 nanoparticles stabilized by organic ligands as seen by Mössbauer spectroscopy

Transmission Mössbauer spectra for 14.41-keV transition in 57Fe were obtained for chalcopyrite-type (Cu-Fe-S2) ternary nanocrystals stabilized by long aliphatic chain ligands. These systems could be considered as isolated hard nano-objects dispersed in soft network of organic ligands. The main attention was paid to the behavior of the particles whose average size was varied in a controllable manner from 3 to 20 nm. It was found that the magnetic hyperfine interaction was relaxed to null to the temperatures well below liquid nitrogen temperature due to the isolation of particles. The fast dynamics could be described by two level environment. Deeper level (atomic) was practically the same as for bulk material except Debye temperature, but the higher level (particle motion) was described by the classical harmonic oscillator with the spring constant dramatically softening with increasing temperature. Such behavior led to fast decrease of the recoilless fraction with increasing temperature. Practically no spectra could be obtained above 240 K. The second order Doppler shift (SOD) had additional contribution at elevated temperatures due to the induced internal oscillations within particle by surrounding thermal bath. Slow dynamics was characterized by the thermally driven overdamped harmonic oscillator motions. In addition, the long range like diffusion of particles was seen. No significant rotation of particles was found within accessible temperature range.

The role of electron confinement in Pd films for the oscillatory magnetic anisotropy in an adjacent Co layer

We demonstrate the interplay between quantum well states in Pd and the magnetic anisotropy in Pd/Co/Cu(001) by combined scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements. Low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals occupied and unoccupied quantum well states (QWS) in atomically flat Pd films on Co/Cu(001). These states give rise to sharp peaks in the differential conductance spectra. A quantitative analysis of the spectra reveals the electronic dispersion of the Pd(001) d-band ($Δ$$_5$-type) along the $Γ$-X direction. \textit{In-situ} MOKE experiments on Pd/Co/Cu(1, 1, 13) uncover a periodic variation of the in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy as a function of Pd thickness with a period of 6 atomic layers Pd. STS shows that QWS in Pd cross the Fermi level with the same periodicity of 6 atomic layers. Backed by previous theoretical work we ascribe the variation of the magnetic anisotropy in Co to QWS in the Pd overlayer. Our results suggest a novel venue towards tailoring uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic films by exploiting QWS in an adjacent material with large spin-orbit coupling.

Epitaxial growth of Fe3O4 thin films on ZnO and MgO substrates

Magnetite thin fims have been grown epitaxially on ZnO and MgO substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The film quality was found to be strongly dependent on the oxygen partial pressure during growth. Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties were analyzed utilizing Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), HArd X-ray PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES), Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE), and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD). Diffraction patterns show clear indication for growth in the (111) direction on ZnO. Vertical structure analysis by HAXPES depth profiling revealed uniform magnetite thin films on both type of substrates. Both, MOKE and XMCD measurements show in-plane easy magnetization with a reduced magnetic moment in case of the films on ZnO.

Strain Relief in Cu-Pd Heteroepitaxy

We present experimental and theoretical studies of Pd/Cu(100) and Cu/Pd(100) heterostructures in order to explore their structure and misfit strain relaxation. Ultrathin Pd and Cu films are grown by pulsed laser deposition at room temperature. For Pd/Cu, compressive strain is released by networks of misfit dislocations running in the [100] and [010] directions, which appear after a few monolayers already. In striking contrast, for Cu/Pd the tensile overlayer remains coherent up to about 9 ML, after which multilayer growth occurs. The strong asymmetry between tensile and compressive cases is in contradiction with continuum elasticity theory, and is also evident in the structural parameters of the strained films. Molecular Dynamics calculations based on classical many-body potentials confirm the pronounced tensile-compressive asymmetry and are in good agreement with the experimental data.
