Burn-in Test and Thermal Performance Evaluation of Silicon Photomultipliers for the JUNO-TAO Experiment

This study evaluates more than 4,000 tiles made of Hamamatsu visual-sensitive silicon photomultipier (SiPM), each with dimensions of 5 $\times$ 5 cm$^2$, intended for the central detector of the Taishan Anti-neutrino Observatory (TAO), a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) aimed at measuring the reactor anti-neutrino energy spectrum with unprecedented energy resolution. All SiPM tiles underwent a room temperature burn-in test in the dark for two weeks, while cryogenic testing analyzed the thermal dependence of parameters for some sampled SiPMs. Results from these comprehensive tests provide crucial insights into the long-term performance and stability of the 10 square meters of SiPMs operating at -50{\deg}C to detect scintillation photons in the TAO detector. Despite some anomalies awaiting further inspection, all SiPMs successfully passed the burn-in test over two weeks at room temperature, which is equivalent to 6.7 years at -50{\deg}C. Results are also used to guide optimal SiPM selection, configuration, and operation, ensuring reliability and sustainability in reactor neutrino measurements. This work also provides insights for a rapid and robust quality assessment in future experiments that employ large-scale SiPMs as detection systems.

Characteristics of the MTx optical transmitter in Total Ionizing Dose

The dual-channel multi-mode 850 nm optical Miniature Transmitter (MTx) is developed for data transmission of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter readout at LHC. The MTx's are exposed to the radiation field of proton-proton collisions, therefore, the tolerance in Total Ionizing Dose (TID) is required. The TID effects in the MTx are investigated with X-rays and Co-60 gamma-rays for the active components of VCSEL diodes and the customized Link-on-Chip laser driver (LOCld) developed in 0.25 um Silicon-on-Sapphire CMOS technology. The irradiation tests were conducted at various dose rates. The responses to TID are observed with degradation of laser currents at initial dose of 10 to 100 Gy(SiO2), and partial recovery with additional TID to a stable output about 90 % of the original. The optical eye diagrams of irradiated samples show slightly increased jittering, and are suitable for the ATLAS requirement of 5 Gbps applications.

A TOSA/ROSA-Based Optical Transmitter (MTx+)/Transceiver (MTRx+) for High-Energy Physics Experiments

We present a dual-channel optical transmitter (MTx+)/transceiver (MTRx+) for the front-end readout electronics of high-energy physics experiments. MTx+ utilizes two Transmitter Optical Sub-Assemblies (TOSAs) and MTRx+ utilizes a TOSA and a Receiver Optical Sub-Assemblies (ROSA). Both MTx+ and MTRx+ receive multimode fibers with standard Lucent Connectors (LCs) as the optical interface and can be panel or board mounted to a motherboard with a standard Enhanced Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP+) connector as the electrical interface. MTx+ and MTRx+ employ a dual-channel Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) driver ASIC called LOCld65, which brings the transmitting data rate up to 14 Gbps per channel. MTx+ and MTRx+ have been tested to survive 4.9 kGy(SiO2).

Prototyping of a 25 Gbps optical transmitter for applications in high-energy physics experiments

Development of optical links with 850 nm multi-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) has advanced to 25 Gbps in speed. For applications in high-energy experiments, the transceivers are required to be tolerant in radiation and particle fields. We report on prototyping of a miniature transmitter named MTx+, which is developed for high speed transmission with the dual-channel laser driver LOCld65 and 850 nm VCSELs packaged in TOSA format. The LOCld65 is fabricated in the TSMC 65 nm process and is packaged in the QFN-40 for assembly. The MTx+ modules and test kits were first made with PCB and components qualified for 10 Gbps applications, and were tested for achieving 14 Gbps. The data transfer rate of the MTx+ module is investigated further for the speed of up to 25 Gbps. The LOCld65 is examined with post-layout simulation and the module design upgraded with components including the TOSA qualified for 25 Gbps applications. The PCB material is replaced by the Panasonic MEGTRON6. The revised MTx+ is tested at 25 Gbps and the eye-diagram shows a mask margin of 22 %.

Reflectance of Silicon Photomultipliers in Linear Alkylbenzene

Reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is an important aspect to understand the large scale SiPM-based detector systems and evaluate the performance of SiPMs. We report the reflactance of two SiPMs, NUV-HD-lowCT and S14160-60-50HS manufactured by Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) respectively, in linear alkylbenzene (LAB) and in air at visible wavelengths. Our results show that the reflectance of the FBK SiPM in air varies in the range of 14% to 23% , depending on wavelengths and angle of incidence, which is 2 time larger than that of the HPK device. This indicates that the two manufacturers are using different designs of anti-reflective coating on SiPMs' surfaces. The reflectance is reduced by about 10% when SiPMs are immersed in LAB, compared with that measured in air. The profiles of reflected light beams are also measured by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera for the two SiPMs.

Top-gated graphene field-effect-transistors formed by decomposition of SiC

Top-gated, few-layer graphene field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated on thermally-decomposed semi-insulating 4H-SiC substrates are demonstrated. Physical vapor deposited SiO2 is used as the gate dielectric. A two-dimensional hexagonal arrangement of carbon atoms with the correct lattice vectors, observed by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, confirms the formation of multiple graphene layers on top of the SiC substrates. The observation of n-type and p-type transition further verifies Dirac Fermions unique transport properties in graphene layers. The measured electron and hole mobility on these fabricated graphene FETs are as high as 5400 cm2/Vs and 4400 cm2/Vs respectively, which are much larger than the corresponding values from conventional SiC or silicon.

Hadronic Calibration of the ATLAS Liquid Argon End-Cap Calorimeter in the Pseudorapidity Region 1.6 < |eta| < 1.8 in Beam Tests

A full azimuthal phi-wedge of the ATLAS liquid argon end-cap calorimeter has been exposed to beams of electrons, muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV <= E <= 200 GeV at the CERN SPS. The angular region studied corresponds to the ATLAS impact position around the pseudorapidity interval 1.6 < |eta| < 1.8. The beam test set-up is described. A detailed study of the performance is given as well as the related intercalibration constants obtained. Following the ATLAS hadronic calibration proposal, a first study of the hadron calibration using a weighting ansatz is presented. The results are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo simulations, based on GEANT 3 and GEANT 4 models.
