Mean flow data assimilation using physics-constrained Graph Neural Networks

Despite their widespread use, purely data-driven methods often suffer from overfitting, lack of physical consistency, and high data dependency, particularly when physical constraints are not incorporated. This study introduces a novel data assimilation approach that integrates Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) with optimisation techniques to enhance the accuracy of mean flow reconstruction, using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations as a baseline. The method leverages the adjoint approach, incorporating RANS-derived gradients as optimisation terms during GNN training, ensuring that the learned model adheres to physical laws and maintains consistency. Additionally, the GNN framework is well-suited for handling unstructured data, which is common in the complex geometries encountered in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The GNN is interfaced with the Finite Element Method (FEM) for numerical simulations, enabling accurate modelling in unstructured domains. We consider the reconstruction of mean flow past bluff bodies at low Reynolds numbers as a test case, addressing tasks such as sparse data recovery, denoising, and inpainting of missing flow data. The key strengths of the approach lie in its integration of physical constraints into the GNN training process, leading to accurate predictions with limited data, making it particularly valuable when data are scarce or corrupted. Results demonstrate significant improvements in the accuracy of mean flow reconstructions, even with limited training data, compared to analogous purely data-driven models.

Relativistic harmonic oscillator

We consider the relativistic generalization of the harmonic oscillator problem by addressing different questions regarding its classical aspects. We treat the problem using the formalism of Hamiltonian mechanics. A Lie algebraic technique is used to solve the associated Liouville equations, yielding the phase space evolution of an ensemble of relativistic particles, subject to a "harmonic" potential. The non-harmonic distortion of the spatial and momentum distributions due to the intrinsic non-linear nature of the relativistic contributions are discussed. We analyze the relativistic dynamics induced by two types of Hamiltonian, which can ascribed to those of harmonic oscillators type. Finally, we briefly discuss the quantum aspects of the problem by considering possible strategies for the solution of the associated Salpeter equation.

Dirac factorization and fractional calculus

We show that the Dirac factorization method can be successfully employed to treat problems involving operators raised to a fractional power. The technique we adopt is based on an extension of the Pauli matrices and the properties of the roots of unity. We also comment about the possibility of using the method to linearize evolution equations containing the $n$-th root of differential operators and make a comparison with other techniques involving suitable transforms.

Relativistic equations with fractional and pseudo-differential operators

In this paper we use different techniques from the fractional and pseudo-operators calculus to solve partial differential equations involving operators with non integer exponents. We apply the method to equations resembling generalizations of the heat equations and discuss the possibility of extending the procedure to the relativistic Schrödinger and Dirac equations.

On integrals involving Hermite polynomials

We show how the combined use of the generating function method and of the theory of multivariable Hermite polynomials is naturally suited to evaluate integrals of gaussian functions and of multiple products of Hermite polynomials.

The Parabolic-Trigonometric Functions

The parabolic functions are introduced in analogy to the circular and hyperbolic cases. We discuss the relevant properties, the geometrical interpretation and touch on possible generalizations and their link with the modular elliptic functions.

A Note on Coriolis Quantum States

We introduce the Coriolis quantum states in analogy to the Landau states. We discuss their physical meaning and their role within the context of gravito-magnetic theory. We also analyse the experimental conditions under which they can be observed and their link with the Aharanov-Carmi effect.
