Field-driven magnetisation steps in Ca3Co2O6: A single-crystal neutron-diffraction study

We present single-crystal neutron-diffraction data for the spin-chain compound Ca3Co2O6. The intensity and line shapes of the two families of Bragg peaks characterising both the antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic components of the magnetic order present in this material have been measured as a function of temperature and applied magnetic fields of up to 5 T. We have studied the microscopic nature of the magnetic order at each step seen in the bulk magnetisation and investigated the evolution of the long and short-range components of the magnetic order in Ca3Co2O6.

Resonant X-ray scattering investigation of the multipolar ordering in Ca3Co2O6

We have performed a resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) study near the Co K edge on a single crystal of Ca3Co2O6. In the magnetically ordered phase a new class of weak reflections appears at the magnetic propagation vector tau (1/3,1/3,1/3). These new reflections allow direct access to the dipolar-quadrupolar E1E2 scattering channel. The theoretical possibility of observing isolated E1E2 electromagnetic multipoles has attracted a lot of interest in the recent years. Unfortunately in many system of interest, parity even and parity odd tensor contributions occur at the same positions in reciprocal space. We demonstrate that in Ca3Co2O6 it is possible to completely separate the parity even from the parity odd terms. The possibility of observing such terms even in globally centrosymmetric systems using RXS has been investigated theoretically; Ca3Co2O6 allows a symmetry based separation of this contribution.

The nature of the magnetic order in Ca3Co2O6

We present a detailed powder and single crystal neutron diffraction study of the spin chain compound Ca3Co2O6. Below 25 K, the system orders magnetically with a modulated partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure. We give a description of the magnetic interactions in the system which is consistent with this magnetic structure. Our study also reveals that the long-range magnetic order co-exists with a shorter range order with a correlation length scale of 180 A in the ab plane. Remarkably, on cooling, the volume of material exhibiting short range order increases at the expense of the long-range order.

Spin, orbital ordering and magnetic dynamics of LaVO3: magnetization, heat capacity and neutron scattering studies

We report the results of magnetization, heat capacity and neutron scattering studies of LaVO3 single crystals. From the neutron diffraction studies, it was found that the compound is magnetically ordered with a C-type antiferromagnetic spin structure at about 136 K. In the vicinity of the ordering temperature, we also observed hysteresis in the neutron diffraction data measured on cooling and heating which indicates the first order nature of the phase transition. In the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, the inelastic neutron scattering studies reveal the presence of a temperature independent c axis spin-wave gap of about 6 meV which is similar to that previously reported for the sister compound YVO3.

Electronic texture of the thermoelectric oxide Na0.75CoO2

From 59Co and 23Na NMR, we demonstrate the impact of the Na+ vacancy ordering on the cobalt electronic states in Na0.75CoO2: at long time scales, there is neither a disproportionation into 75 % Co3+ and 25 % Co4+ states, nor a mixed-valence metal with a uniform Co3.25+ state. Instead, the system adopts an intermediate configuration in which 30 % of the lattice sites form an ordered pattern of localized Co3+ states. Above 180 K, an anomalous mobility of specific Na+ sites is found to coexist with this electronic texture, suggesting that the formation of the latter may contribute to stabilizing the Na+ ordering. Control of the ion doping in these materials thus appears to be crucial for fine-tuning of their thermoelectric properties.

Incommensurate magnetic ground state revealed by RXS in the frustrated spin system Ca3Co2O6

We have performed a resonant x-ray scattering study at the Co pre-K edge on a single crystal of Ca3Co2O6. The measurements reveal an abrupt transition to a magnetically ordered state immediately below T_N = 25 K, with a magnetic correlation length in excess of 5500 Å along the c-axis chains. There is no evidence for modifications to the Co$^{3+}$ spin state. A temperature dependent modulation in the magnetic order along the c-axis and an unusual decrease in the magnetic correlation lengths on cooling are observed. The results are compatible with the onset of a partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure in Ca3Co2O6.

Elliptical hole pockets in the Fermi surfaces of unhydrated and hydrated sodium cobalt oxides

The surprise discovery of superconductivity below 5K in sodium cobalt oxides when hydrated with water has caught the attention of experimentalists and theorists alike. Most explanations for its occurence have focused heavily on the properties of some small elliptically shaped pockets predicted to be the electronically dominant Fermi surface sheet, but direct attempts to look for them have instead cast serious doubts over their existence. Here we present evidence that these pockets do indeed exist, based on bulk measurements of the electron momentum distribution in unhydrated and hydrated sodium cobalt oxides using the technique of x-ray Compton scattering.

Intraplanar Magnetic Excitations in Na0.5CoO2: An Inelastic Neutron Study

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements mapping the in-plane magnetic interactions of Na0.5CoO2 reveal dispersive excitations at points above an energy gap Eg = 11.5(5) meV at the superstructural Bragg reflections. The excitations are highly damped, broadening with increasing energy, and disappear at hw ~ 35 meV, a strong indication that the magnetism is itinerant. Tilting into the ac plane reduces the value of Eg by 25%, suggesting that the dispersion along c is significant and the magnetic correlations are three-dimensional, as seen at the higher doping levels.

The magnetic field and pressure dependence of the magnetic ordering transition in NaxCoO2 (0.6<x<0.72)

We have measured the magnetic field (H<90 kOe) and pressure (P<10 kbar) dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature, Tmag, in single crystal samples of NaxCoO2 for a range of Na concentrations (0.60<x<0.72). We show that in zero field, Tmag remains constant with decreasing x before magnetic order disappears at x=0.65. Heat capacity and magnetization data show that for x=0.70, Tmag is unchanged in an applied field. In contrast, magnetization data collected under hydrostatic pressure show that Tmag increases from 22.0 K at 1 bar to 25.4 K at 10 kbar. This rise is at odds with the behaviour expected for model spin density wave systems.

The effect of externally applied pressure on the magnetic behavior of Cu2Te2O5(BrxCl{1-x})2

The effect of externally applied pressure on the magnetic behavior of Cu2Te2O5(BrxCl{1-x})2 with x = 0, 0.73 and 1, is investigated by a combination of magnetic susceptibility, neutron diffraction and neutron inelastic scattering measurements. The magnetic transition temperatures of the x = 0 and 0.73 compositions are observed to increase linearly with increasing pressure at a rate of 0.23(2) K/kbar and 0.04(1) K/kbar respectively. However, the bromide shows contrasting behavior with a large suppression of the transition temperature under pressure, at a rate of -0.95(9) K/kbar. In neutron inelastic scattering measurements of Cu2Te2O5Br2 under pressure only a small change to the ambient pressure magnetic excitations were observed. A peak in the density of states was seen to shift from ~5 meV in ambient pressure to ~6 meV under an applied pressure of 11.3 kbar, which was associated with an increase in the overall magnetic coupling strength.

Neutron inelastic scattering investigation of the magnetic excitations in Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2 (X=Br, Cl)

Neutron inelastic scattering investigations have been performed on the spin tetrahedral system Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2 (X = Cl, Br). We report the observation of magnetic excitations with a dispersive component in both compounds, associated with the 3D incommensurate magnetic order that develops below $T^{Cl}_{N}$=18.2 K and $T^{Br}_{N}$=11.4 K. The excitation in Cu_2Te_2O_5Cl_2 softens as the temperature approaches $T^{Cl}_{N}$, leaving diffuse quasi-elastic scattering above the transition temperature. In the bromide, the excitations are present well above $T^{Br}_{N}$, which might be attributed to the presence of a degree of low dimensional correlations above $T^{Br}_{N}$ in this compound.

Investigation of the Spin Density Wave in NaxCoO2

Magnetic susceptibility, transport and heat capacity measurements of single crystal NaxCoO2 (x=0.71) are reported. A transition to a spin density wave (SDW) state at Tmag = 22 K is observable in all measurements, except chi(ac) data in which a cusp is observed at 4 K and attributed to a low temperature glassy phase. M(H) loops are hysteretic below 15 K. Both the SDW transition and low temperature hysteresis are only visible along the c-axis. The system also exhibits a substantial (~40%) positive magnetoresistance below this temperature. Calculations of the electronic heat capacity gamma above and below Tmag and the size of the jump in C indicate that the onset of the SDW brings about the opening of gap and the removal of part of the Fermi surface. Reduced in-plane electron-electron scattering counteracts the loss of carriers below the transition and as a result we see a net reduction in resistivity below Tmag. Sodium ordering transitions at higher temperatures are observable as peaks in the heat capacity with a corresponding increase in resistivity.

Single crystals of the anisotropic Kagome staircase compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8

Compounds with a Kagome type lattice are known to exhibit magnetic frustration. Large single crystals of two compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8, which are variants of a Kagome net lattice, have been grown successfully by the floating zone technique using an optical image furnace. The single crystals are of high quality and exhibit intriguing magnetic properties.

Investigation of the field-treated magnetic state in Gd5Ge4

At low temperatures, the intermetallic compound Gd$_5$Ge$_4$ shows a sharp field-induced transition into a ferromagnetic state around 25 kOe of applied field. The material remains in the field treated ferromagnetic state even when the magnetic field is removed. We have investigated the character of this field-treated state by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The nature of the magnetization and the heat capacity are found to be different above and below a charactersitic temperature Tirr = 25 K.

Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization in the Ising Chain Compound Ca3Co2O6

The magnetic behavior of the Ca3Co2O6 spin chain compound is characterized by a large Ising-like character of its ferromagnetic chains, set on triangular lattice, that are antiferromagnetically coupled. At low temperature, T < 7K, the 3D antiferromagnetic state evolves towards a spin frozen state. In this temperature range, magnetic field driven magnetization of single crystals (H//chains) exhibits stepped variations. The occurrence of these steps at regular intervals of the applied magnetic field, Hstep=1.2T, is reminiscent of the quantum tunneling of the magnetization (QTM) of molecular based magnets. Magnetization relaxation experiments also strongly support the occurrence of this quantum phenomenon. This first observation of QTM in a magnetic oxide belonging to the large family of the A3BBO6 compounds opens new opportunities to study a quantum effect in a very different class of materials from molecular magnets.

Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity investigations of the unconventional spin-chain compound Sr3CuPtO6

The Heisenberg spin chain compound Sr3CuPtO6 is investigated by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. Sr3CuPtO6 has an unconventional chain structure in the sense that i) the spin half copper atoms are arranged in a zigzag chain structure, and ii) neighboring Cu atoms along the chains are separated by spin zero platinum atoms. We report that this compound shows broad features in the temperature dependence of both the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity and the magnetic susceptibility. Despite the unconventional nature of the spin chain structure, this set of data exhibits good agreement with theoretical models for a classical S = 1/2 Heisenberg spin chain compound. The values of the intra-chain coupling constant, obtained by different techniques, are found to be very close to each other. The low temperature heat capacity data (below ~ 6 K) exhibit a deviation from the theoretically expected behavior, which could be related to a small energy gap in the spin excitation spectrum.

Magnetic phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7

Gd2Ti2O7 is a highly frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice, where apart from the Heisenberg exchange the spins also interact via dipole-dipole forces. We report on low-temperature specific heat measurements performed on single crystals of Gd2Ti2O7 for three different directions of an applied magnetic field. The measurements reveal the strongly anisotropic behaviour of Gd2Ti2O7 in a magnetic field despite the apparent absence of a significant single-ion anisotropy for Gd3+. The H-T phase diagrams are constructed for H//111], H//[110] and H//[112]. The results indicate that further theoretical work beyond a simple mean-field model is required.

Field-Induced Magnetization Steps in Intermetallic Compounds and Manganese Oxides: The Martensitic Scenario

Field-induced magnetization jumps with similar characteristics are observed at low temperature for the intermetallic germanide Gd5Ge4and the mixed-valent manganite Pr0.6Ca0.4Mn0.96Ga0.04O3. We report that the field location -and even the existence- of these jumps depends critically on the magnetic field sweep rate used to record the data. It is proposed that, for both compounds, the martensitic character of their antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions is at the origin of the magnetization steps.
