Scaling properties of the pairing problem in the strong coupling limit

We study the excited states of the pairing Hamiltonian providing an expansion for their energy in the strong coupling limit. To assess the role of the pairing interaction we apply the formalism to the case of a heavy atomic nucleus. We show that only a few statistical moments of the level distribution are sufficient to yield an accurate estimate of the energy for not too small values of the coupling $G$ and we give the analytic expressions of the first four terms of the series. Further, we discuss the convergence radius $G_{\rm sing}$ of the expansion showing that it strongly depends upon the details of the level distribution. Furthermore $G_{\rm sing}$ is not related to the critical values of the coupling $G_{\rm crit}$, which characterize the physics of the pairing Hamiltonian, since it can exist even in the absence of these critical points.

Static properties of nuclear matter within the Boson Loop Expansion

The use of the Boson Loop Expansion is proposed for investigating the static properties of nuclear matter. We explicitly consider a schematic dynamical model in which nucleons interact with the scalar-isoscalar sigma meson. The suggested approximation scheme is examined in detail at the mean field level and at the one- and two-loop orders. The relevant formulas are provided to derive the binding energy per nucleon, the pressure and the compressibility of nuclear matter. Numerical results of the binding energy at the one-loop order are presented for Walecka's sigma-omega model in order to discuss the degree of convergence of the Boson Loop Expansion.

On the stability of Quantum Hadro-Dynamics

We explore the possible occurrence of $σ$-$ω$ condensation in the Quantum Hadro-Dynamics (QHD), namely the Serot and Walecka model, finding that at the mean field level it corresponds to a critical value of the coupling constant $g_σ=8.828$ and density $k_F=207.2$ MeV/c, significantly below the standard value of QHD.

The generalised relativistic Lindhard functions

We present here analytic expressions for the generalised Lindhard function, also referred to as Fermi Gas polarisation propagator, in a relativistic kinematic framework and in the presence of various resonances and vertices. Particular attention is payed to its real part, since it gives rise to substantial difficulties in the definition of the currents entering the dynamics.

The Goldstone bosons in the pairing Hamiltonian: the path integral approach

As a first step to derive the IBM from a microscopic nuclear hamiltonian, we bosonize the pairing hamiltonian in the framework of the path integral formalism respecting both the particle number conservation and the Pauli principle. Special attention is payed to the role of the Goldstone bosons. We construct the saddle point expansion which reproduces the sector of the spectrum associated to the addition or removal of nucleon pairs.

The many levels pairing Hamiltonian for two pairs

We address the problem of two pairs of fermions living on an arbitrary number of single particle levels of a potential well (mean field) and interacting through a pairing force. The associated solutions of the Richardson's equations are classified in terms of a number $v_l$, which reduces to the seniority $v$ in the limit of large values of the pairing strength $G$ and yields the number of pairs not developing a collective behaviour, their energy remaining finite in the $G\to\infty$ limit. We express analytically, through the moments of the single particle levels distribution, the collective mode energy and the two critical values $G_{\rm cr}^{+}$ and $G_{\rm cr}^{-}$ of the coupling which can exist on a single particle level with no pair degeneracy. Notably $G_{\rm cr}^{+}$ and $G_{\rm cr}^{-}$ merge when the number of single particle levels goes to infinity, where they coincide with the $G_{\rm cr}$ (when it exists) of a one pair system, not envisioned by the Richardson theory. In correspondence of $G_{\rm cr}$ the system undergoes a transition from a mean field to a pairing dominated regime. We finally explore the behaviour of the excitation energies, wave functions and pair transfer amplitudes finding out that the former, for $G>G_{\rm cr}^{-}$, come close to the BCS predictions, whereas the latter display a divergence at $G_{\rm cr}$, signaling the onset of a long range off-diagonal order in the system.

On the analytic solution of the pairing problem: one pair in many levels

We search for approximate, but analytic solutions of the pairing problem for one pair of nucleons in many levels of a potential well. For the collective energy a general formula, independent of the details of the single particle spectrum, is given in both the strong and weak coupling regimes. Next the displacements of the solutions trapped in between the single particle levels with respect to the unperturbed energies are explored: their dependence upon a suitably defined quantum number is found to undergo a transition between two different regimes.

The pairing Hamiltonian for one pair of identical nucleons bound in a potential well

The problem of one pair of identical nucleons sitting in ${\cal N}$ single particle levels of a potential well and interacting through the pairing force is treated introducing even Grassmann variables. The eigenvectors are analytically expressed solely in terms of these with coefficients fixed by the eigenvalues and the single particle energies. When the latter are those of an harmonic oscillator well an accurate expression is derived for both the collective eigenvalue and for those trapped in between the single particle levels, for any strength of the pairing interaction and for any number of levels. Notably the trapped solutions are labelled through an index upon which they depend parabolically.

The pairing Hamiltonian for one pair of nucleons bound in a potential well

The problem of one pair of identical nucleons sitting in ${\cal N}$ single particle levels of a potential well and interacting through the pairing force is treated introducing, in the Hamiltonian formalism, even Grassmann variables. The eigenvectors are analytically expressed solely in terms of these with coefficients fixed by the eigenvalues and the single particle energies. For these a specific model is needed: in the case of the harmonic oscillator well, for any strength of the pairing interaction, an accurate expression is derived for both the collective eigenvalue and for those trapped in between the single particle levels. Notably the latter are labelled through an index upon which they depend parabolically.

Bosonization of the pairing Hamiltonian

The problem of the pairing interaction is dealt with even Grassmann variables in the hamiltonian framework. Eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of angular momentum are given in terms of single particle and collective bosonic fields.

On dipole compression modes in nuclei

Isoscalar dipole strength distributions in spherical medium- and heavy-mass nuclei are calculated within random phase approximation (RPA) or quasiparticle RPA. Different Skyrme-type interactions corresponding to incompressibilities in the range 200 - 250 MeV are used. The results are discussed in comparison with existing data on isoscalar giant dipole resonances. Two main issues are raised, firstly the calculated giant resonance energies are somewhat higher than the observed ones, and secondly a sizable fraction of strength is predicted below 20 MeV which needs to be experimentally confirmed.

A composite bosons minimal basis for the pairing Hamiltonian

The pairing interaction among identical nucleons in a single-particle level is treated in the hamiltonian formalism using even Grassmann variables. A minimal (irreducible) basis having a remarkable symmetry property is set up using composite, commuting variables with a finite index of nilpotency. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of the angular momentum of the pairing hamiltonian are then found. The eigenvectors, which cannot be cast solely in terms of composite bosons with angular momentum zero and two, are expanded in the minimal basis with coefficients analytically expressed in terms of a generalized hypergeometric function.

Compression modes in nuclei: microscopic models with Skyrme interactions

The isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) and giant dipole resonances (ISGDR) in medium-heavy nuclei are investigated in the framework of HF+RPA and HF-BCS+QRPA with Skyrme effective interactions. It is found that pairing has little effect on these modes. It is also found that the coupling of the RPA states to 2p-2h configurations results in about (or less than) 1 MeV shifts of the resonance energies and at the same time gives the correct total widths. For the ISGMR, comparison with recent data leads to a value of nuclear matter compression modulus close to 215 MeV. However, a discrepancy between calculated and measured energies of the ISGDR in $^{208}$Pb is found and remains an open problem.

Competition Between Particle-Hole and Particle-Particle Correlations in Forbidden Electron Capture: the Case of $^{123}$Te

The K-electron capture half-life of $^{123}$Te has been recently measured to be $t^K_{exp}=2.4\times 10^{19}$ yr, and constitutes the longest half-life ever measured in a single $β$-transition of any nuclear species. We have calculated this second unique forbidden transition within the framework of the proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation, making use of Skyrme-type effective interactions. A strong cancellation effect between particle-hole and particle-particle correlations is found. The model, without any renormalization of the force, provides a lower limit for the K-electron capture half-life of $\sim 10^{17}$ yr, which unambiguously rules out the old experimental values of $10^{13} - 10^{14}$ yr. A few percent increase of the particle-particle matrix elements of the Skyrme interaction allows to reproduce the experimental findings.
