Chiral Symmetry: Pion-Nucleon Interactions in Constituent Quark Models

We study the interactions of an elementary pion with a nucleon made of constituent quarks and show that the enforcement of chiral symmetry requires the use of a two-body operator, whose form does not depend on the choice of the pion-quark coupling. The coordinate space NN effective potential in the pion exchange channel is given as a sum of terms involving two gradients, that operate on both the usual Yukawa function and the confining potential. We also consider an application to the case of quarks bound by a harmonic potential and show that corrections due to the symmetry are important.

The role of chiral symmetry in two-pion exchange nuclear potential

We evaluate the two pion exchange contribution to the nucleon-nucleon potential in configuration space using a "minimal chiral model" containing only pions and nucleons. We argue that this model has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, which entitles it to become a standard ingredient of any modern potential. The main features of this model is that the scalar-isoscalar component of the interaction is relatively small, due to cancellations between large terms, and fails to reproduce the intermediate range attraction in the central channel. We show that chiral symmetry is the responsible for these large cancellations in the two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction, which are similar to those occuring in free pion-nucleon scattering. Another feature of the model is that these results do not depend on how chiral symmetry is implemented.

CHIRAL BACKGROUND FOR THE TWO PION EXCHANGE NUCLEAR POTENTIAL: A PARAMETRIZED VERSION

We argue that the minimal chiral background for the two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, which entitles it to become a standard ingredient of any modern potential. In order to facilitate applications, we present a parametrized version of a configuration space potential derived previously. We then use it to assess the phenomenological contents of some existing NN potentials.
