Mixed chemistry phenomenon during late stages of stellar evolution

We discuss phenomenon of simultaneous presence of O- and C-based material in surroundings of evolutionary advanced stars. We concentrate on silicate carbon stars and present observations that directly confirm the binary model scenario for them. We discuss also class of C-stars with OH emission detected, to which some [WR] planetary nebulae do belong.

Self - consistent treatment of dynamics and chemistry in the winds from carbon-rich AGB stars. I. Tests of the equilibrium and kinetic chemical codes

The main aim of the paper was performing test of our (chemical and kinetic) codes, which will be used during self-consistent modelling of dynamics and chemistry in the winds from C-rich AGB stars. We use the thermodynamical equilibrium code to test the different databases of dissociation constants. We also calculate the equilibrium content of the gas using the kinetic code, which includes the chemical network of neutral--neutral reactions studied by Willacy & Cherchneff (1998). The influence of reaction rates updated using the UMIST database for Astrochemistry 2005 (UDFA05), was tested. The local thermodynamical equilibrium calculations have shown that the NIST database reproduces fairly well equilibrium concentrations of Willacy & Cherchneff (1998), while agreement in case of Tsuji (1973) dissociation constants is much worse. The most important finding is that the steady state solution obtained with the kinetic code for reaction network of Willacy & Cherchneff (1998) is different from the thermodynamical equilibrium solution. In particular, CN and C2, which are important opacity sources are underabundant relative to hermodynamical equilibrium, while O-bearing molecules (like SiO, H2O, and OH) are overabundant. After updating the reaction rates by data from the UDFA05 database consistency in O-bearing species becomes much better, however the disagreement in C-bearing species is still present.

An abundance analysis of the symbiotic star CH Cyg

The photospheric abundances for the cool component of the symbiotic star CH Cyg were calculated for the first time using high-resolution near-infrared spectra and the method of of standard LTE analysis and atmospheric models. The iron abundance for CH Cyg was found to be solar, [Fe/H] = 0.0+/-0.19. The atmospheric parameters and metallicity for CH Cyg are found to be approximately equal to those for nearby field M7 giants. The calculated [C/H] = -0.15, [N/H] = +0.16, [O/H] = -0.07, and the isotopic ratios of 12C/13C and 16O/17O are close to the mean values for single M giants that have experienced the first dredge-up. A reasonable explanation for the absence of barium star-like chemical peculiarities seems to be the high metallicity of CH Cyg. The emission line technique was explored for estimating CNO ratios in the wind of the giant.

V4332 Sagittarii revisited

The eruption of V4332 Sgr discovered in February 1994 shows striking similarities to that of V838 Mon started in January 2002. The nature of these eruptions is, however, enigmatic and unclear. We present new photometric and spectroscopic data on V4332 Sgr obtained in April-May 2003 at the SAAO. The obtained spectrum shows an unusual emission-line component superimposed on an early M-type stellar spectrum. The emission-line spectrum is of very low excitation and is dominated by lines from neutral elemets (NaI, FeI, CaI) and molecular bands (TiO, ScO, AlO). We also analyse all the observational data, mainly photometric measurements, available for V4332 Sgr. This allows us to follow the evolution of the effective temperature, radius and luminosity of the object since February 1994 till 2003. We show that the observed decline of V4332 Sgr can be accounted for by a gravitational contraction of an inflated stellar envelope. The combined optical and infrared photometry in 2003 shows that apart from the M-type stellar component there is a strong infrared excess in the KLM bands. This excess was absent in the 2MASS measurements done in 1998 but was probably starting to appear in K in 1999 when the object was observed in the DENIS survey. We interpret the results in terms of a stellar merger scenario proposed by Soker & Tylenda. The infrared excess is likely to be due to a disc-like structure which is either of protostellar nature or has been produced during the 1994 eruption and stores angular momentum from the merger event.

The yellow hypergiants HR 8752 and rho Cassiopeiae near the evolutionary border of instability

High-resolution near-ultraviolet spectra of the yellow hypergiants HR 8752 and rho Cassiopeiae indicate high effective temperatures placing both stars near the T_eff border of the ``yellow evolutionary void''. At present, the temperature of HR 8752 is higher than ever. For this star we found Teff=7900+-200 K, whereas rho Cassiopeiae has Teff=7300+-200 K. Both, HR 8752 and rho Cassiopeiae have developed strong stellar winds with Vinf ~ 120 km/s and Vinf ~ 100 km/s, respectively. For HR 8752 we estimate an upper limit for the spherically symmetric mass-loss of 6.7X10^{-6}M_solar/yr. Over the past decades two yellow hypergiants appear to have approached an evolutionary phase, which has never been observed before. We present the first spectroscopic evidence of the blueward motion of a cool super/hypergiant on the HR diagram.
