Radio Halos in Galaxy Clusters as unveiled by the SKA telescope

Giant radio halos (RHs) are diffuse, Mpc-scale synchrotron sources observed in a growing fraction of galaxy clusters. They trace relativistic particles and magnetic fields in the intracluster medium (ICM), providing a unique window into non-thermal processes and their role in cluster evolution. RHs are primarily found in merging systems, supporting models in which turbulence generated during cluster collisions re-accelerates pre-existing electrons to the energies required for the observed radio emission. In this scenario, the occurrence, power, and spectral properties of RHs depend on the energetics of cluster mergers, with the most massive and dynamically disturbed clusters hosting the most powerful halos. Low-frequency observations are crucial to uncover ultra-steep-spectrum RHs, a key prediction of turbulent re-acceleration models, and are expected to arise from less energetic merger events. LOFAR has enabled statistical studies of large cluster samples, placing robust constraints on RH occurrence and spectral trends. In this Chapter, we model RH formation and evolution using Monte Carlo simulations calibrated on LoTSS-DR2 findings, and we present predictions for SKA-Low in the AA4 configuration. Our results show that SKA will probe an unprecedented region of cluster mass and redshift space, detecting at least $\sim 2500$ RHs up to $z \approx 0.6$, including $\gtrsim 1000$ ultra-steep-spectrum systems, and revealing halos in clusters down to $\sim 10^{14}\, M_\odot$ and out to $z \approx 1$. These surveys will provide stringent tests of turbulent re-acceleration models and significantly advance our understanding of non-thermal processes in galaxy clusters.

SoUthern Cluster sCale Extended Source Survey (SUCCESS): A GMRT and MeerKAT study of nine massive galaxy clusters

We aim to carry out a radio study of the SoUthern Cluster sCale Extended Source Survey (SUCCESS) sample consisting of twenty massive (M$_{500} > 5\times10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$), nearby (redshift $<0.3$) and southern ($-50^{\circ} < δ< -30^\circ$) galaxy clusters detected by the Planck satellite and the South Pole Telescope. Here we report targeted GMRT observations (325/610 MHz) for a sub-sample of nine clusters. We also use the first data release of MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey (1283 MHz) for five of these nine clusters. The properties of the mini-halo in RXC J0528.9-3927, a candidate mini-halo in A3322, the radio halo and candidate double relics in A3399, and the radio halo in RXC J0232.2-4420 are presented. We also report detection of candidate radio relics at distances 1 and 1.9 Mpc from the center of RXC J0232.2-4420. The southeast relic of A3399 is consistent with the radio power - mass scaling relation for radio relics, while the candidate relics around RXC J0232.2-4420 are outliers. This indicates an origin of the candidate relics near RXC J0232.2-4420 to be independent of this cluster and a cluster merger-shock origin for the relic in A3399. In this sub-sample of clusters 1/9 hosts a radio halo and double relics, 1/9 hosts a radio halo and 2/9 host mini-halos. The dynamical states based on X-ray morphology show that A3399 is a disturbed cluster; however, the radio halo cluster RXC J0232.2-4420 is relaxed, and the mini-halo clusters have intermediate morphologies, adding to the cases of the less commonly found associations.

Nullspaces of Entanglement Breaking Channels and Applications

We investigate the nullspace structures of entanglement breaking channels, and related applications. We show that every operator space of trace zero matrices is the nullspace of an entanglement breaking channel. We derive a test for mixed unitarity of quantum channels based on complementary channel behaviour and entanglement breaking channel nullspaces. We identify conditions that guarantee the existence of private algebras for certain classes of entanglement breaking channels.

Quantum Complementarity and Operator Structures

We establish operator structure identities for quantum channels and their error-correcting and private codes, emphasizing the complementarity relationship between the two perspectives. Relevant structures include correctable and private operator algebras, and operator spaces such as multiplicative domains and nullspaces of quantum channels and their complementary maps. For the case of privatizing to quantum states, we also derive related dimension inequalities that may be viewed as operator algebra uncertainty relations.
