Bertrand's Postulate for Number Fields

Consider an algebraic number field, $K$, and its ring of integers, $\mathcal{O}_K$. There exists a smallest $B_K>1$ such that for any $x>1$ we can find a prime ideal, $\mathfrak{p}$, in $\mathcal{O}_K$ with norm $N(\mathfrak{p})$ in the interval $[x,B_Kx]$. This is a generalization of Bertrand's postulate to number fields, and in this paper we produce bounds on $B_K$ in terms of the invariants of $K$ from an effective prime ideal theorem due to Lagarias and Odlyzko. We also show that a bound on $B_K$ can be obtained from an asymptotic estimate for the number of ideals in $\mathcal{O}_K$ less than $x$.

Oscillations of coefficients of Dirichlet series attached to automorphic forms

For $m\ge 2$, let $π$ be an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_m(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ with unitary central character. Let $a_π(n)$ be the $n^{th}$ coefficient of the $L$-function attached to $π$. Goldfeld and Sengupta have recently obtained a bound for $\sum_{n\le x} a_π(n)$ as $x \rightarrow \infty$. For $m\ge 3$ and $π$ not a symmetric power of a $GL_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$-cuspidal automorphic representation with not all finite primes unramified for $π$, their bound is better than all previous bounds. In this paper, we further improve the bound of Golfeld and Sengupta. We also prove a quantitative result for the number of sign changes of the coefficients of certain automorphic $L$-functions, provided the coefficients are real numbers.

On sign changes for almost prime coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms

For a half-integral weight modular form $f = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} a_f(n)n^{\frac{k-1}{2}} q^n$ of weight $k = l +\frac{1}{2}$ on $Γ_0(4)$ such that $a_f(n)$ ($n$ $\in$ $\mathbb{N}$) are real, we prove for a fixed suitable natural number $r$ that $a_f(n)$ changes sign infinitely often as $n$ varies over numbers having at most $r$ prime factors, assuming the analog of the Ramanujan conjecture for half-integral weight forms.

Some remarks related to Maeda's conjecture

In this article we deal with the problem of counting the number of pairs of normalized eigenforms $ (f,g) $ of weight $k$ and level $N$ such that $ a_p (f) = a_p (g) $ where $a_p (f) $ denotes the $p-$th Fourier coefficient of $f$. Here $p$ is a fixed prime.

On the error term in a Parseval type formula in the theory of Ramanujan expansions II

For two arithmetical functions $f$ and $g$ with absolutely convergent Ramanujan expansions, Murty and Saha have recently derived asymptotic formulas with error term for the convolution sum $\sum_{n \le N} f(n) g(n+h)$ under some suitable conditions (see http://arxiv.org/abs/1506.01945). In this follow up article we improve these results with a weakened hypothesis which is in some sense minimal.

On the error term in a Parseval type formula in the theory of Ramanujan expansions

Given two arithmetical functions $f,g$ we derive, under suitable conditions, asymptotic formulas with error term, for the convolution sums $\sum_{n \le N} f(n) g(n+h)$, building on an earlier work of Gadiyar, Murty and Padma. A key role in our method is played by the theory of Ramanujan expansions for arithmetical functions.

On a conjecture of Erdös and certain Dirichlet series

Let $f:\Z/q\Z\rightarrow\Z$ be such that $f(a)=\pm 1$ for $1\le a<q$, and $f(q)=0$. Then Erdös conjectured that $\sum_{n\ge1}\frac{f(n)}{n} \ne 0$. For $q$ even, this is trivially true. If $q\equiv 3$ ( mod $4$), Murty and Saradha proved the conjecture. We show that this conjecture is true for $82\%$ of the remaining integers $q\equiv 1$ ( mod $4$).

Non-vanishing of Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients

For any periodic function $f:{\mathbb N} \to {\mathbb C}$ with period $q$, we study the Dirichlet series $L(s,f):=\sum_{n\geq 1} f(n)/n^s.$ It is well-known that this admits an analytic continuation to the entire complex plane except at $s=1$, where it has a simple pole with residue $$ρ:= q^{-1}\sum_{1\leq a\leq q} f(a).$$ Thus, the function is analytic at $s=1$ when $ρ=0$ and in this case, we study its non-vanishing using the theory of linear forms in logarithms and Dirichlet $L$-series. In this way, we give new proofs of an old criterion of Okada for the non-vanishing of $L(1,f)$ as well as a classical theorem of Baker, Birch and Wirsing. We also give some new necessary and sufficient conditions for the non-vanishing of $L(1,f)$.

Divisors of Fourier coefficients of modular forms

Let $d(n)$ denote the number of divisors of $n$. In this paper, we study the average value of $d(a(p))$, where $p$ is a prime and $a(p)$ is the $p$-th Fourier coefficient of a normalized Hecke eigenform of weight $k \ge 2$ for $Γ_0(N)$ having rational integer Fourier coefficients.

Effective equidistribution and the Sato-Tate law for families of elliptic curves

Extending recent work of others, we provide effective bounds on the family of all elliptic curves and one-parameter families of elliptic curves modulo p (for p prime tending to infinity) obeying the Sato-Tate Law. We present two methods of proof. Both use the framework of Murty-Sinha; the first involves only knowledge of the moments of the Fourier coefficients of the L-functions and combinatorics, and saves a logarithm, while the second requires a Sato-Tate law. Our purpose is to illustrate how the caliber of the result depends on the error terms of the inputs and what combinatorics must be done.

Counting squarefree discriminants of trinomials under abc

For an odd positive integer $n\ge 5$, assuming the truth of the $abc$ conjecture, we show that for a positive proportion of pairs $(a,b)$ of integers the trinomials of the form $t^n+at+b (a,b\in \mathbb Z)$ are irreducible and their discriminants are squarefree.

Selberg's Conjectures and Artin $L$-functions

The author reviews results and conjectures of Selberg on a class of Dirichlet series functions which share properties with the Riemann zeta function, and he relates this work to the theory of Artin L-functions.
