Loosely Bernoulli zero exponent measures for elliptic matrix cocycles

For an open and dense subset of elliptic ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ matrix cocycles, we construct a family of loosely Bernoulli ergodic measures with zero top Lyapunov exponent. This provides a counterpart to a classical result by Furstenberg. The construction gives also an $\bar f$-connected set of measures with these properties whose entropies vary continuously from zero to almost the maximal possible value. We also obtain an analogous result for an open class of nonhyperbolic step skew products with $\mathbb S^1$ diffeomorphism fiber maps. Our approach combines substitution schemes between finite letter alphabets and differentiable dynamics.

Mingled hyperbolicities: ergodic properties and bifurcation phenomena (an approach using concavity)

We consider skew-products with concave interval fiber maps over a certain subshift obtained as the projection of orbits staying in a given region. It generates a new type of (essentially) coded shift. The fiber maps have expanding and contracting regions which dynamically interact. The dynamics also exhibits pairs of horseshoes of different type of hyperbolicity which, in some cases, are cyclically related. The space of ergodic measures on the base is an entropy-dense Poulsen simplex. Those measures lift canonically to ergodic measures for the skew-product. We explain when and how the spaces of (fiber) contracting and expanding ergodic measures glue along the nonhyperbolic ones. A key step is the approximation (in the weak$\ast$ topology and in entropy) of nonhyperbolic measures by ergodic ones, obtained only by means of concavity. Concavity is not merely a technical artificial hypothesis, but it prevents the presence of additional independent subsystems. The description of homoclinic relations is also a key instrument. These skew-products are embedded in non-decreasing entropy one-parameter family of diffeomorphisms stretching from a heterodimensional cycle to a collision of homoclinic classes. Associated bifurcation phenomena involve a jump of the space of ergodic measures and, in some cases, of entropy.

Investigation of anomalous thermodynamic and transport properties of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ ($x \geq 0.8$)

Thermodynamic and transport properties of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ with a calcium concentration $x \geq 0.8$ were investigated at low temperatures and in external magnetic field. The investgations revealed a Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) behaviour characterized by specific heat $C/T = const$ and resistivity $ρ\sim T^2$ and an anomalous non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behaviour with $ρ\sim T^{5/3}$ and a quasi-logarithmic increase of $C/T$ with decreasing temperature. The $T$--$x$ and $T$--$B$ phase diagrams which separate both regions were prepared for the investigated materials. Then, the experimental behaviour of $C/T$ and $ρ(T)$ were compared with predictions of the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory of spin fluctuations. Within this approach, $C/T(T)$ was well described up to 20 K. The SCR parameters $y_0$, $y_1$ and $T_0$ inferred from specific heat analysis allowed to describe properly $ρ(T)$ up to approximately 5 K. In addition, the resistivity data were analysed within the `hidden Fermi liquid' theory of Anderson, obtaining very good descritption of the experimental behaviour up to about 25 K. An anomalous increase of the $C/T$ ratio already in the LFL region below 2 K in very weak magnetic fields (0.2--0.3 T) was identified as caused by the Schottky anomaly induced by ferromagnetic clusters embodied into the essentially paramagnetic materials.

Nonhyperbolic step skew-products: Ergodic approximation

We study transitive step skew-product maps modeled over a complete shift of $k$, $k\ge2$, symbols whose fiber maps are defined on the circle and have intermingled contracting and expanding regions. These dynamics are genuinely nonhyperbolic and exhibit simultaneously ergodic measures with positive, negative, and zero exponents. We introduce a set of axioms for the fiber maps and study the dynamics of the resulting skew-product. These axioms turn out to capture the key mechanisms of the dynamics of nonhyperbolic robustly transitive maps with compact central leaves. Focusing on the nonhyperbolic ergodic measures (with zero fiber exponent) of these systems, we prove that such measures are approximated in the weak$\ast$ topology and in entropy by hyperbolic ones. We also prove that they are in the intersection of the convex hulls of the measures with positive fiber exponent and with negative fiber exponent. Our methods also allow us to perturb hyperbolic measures. We can perturb a measure with negative exponent directly to a measure with positive exponent (and vice-versa), however we lose some amount of entropy in this process. The loss of entropy is determined by the difference between the Lyapunov exponents of the measures.

Abundant rich phase transitions in step skew products

We study phase transitions for the topological pressure of geometric potentials of transitive sets. The sets considered are partially hyperbolic having a step skew product dynamics over a horseshoe with one-dimensional fibers corresponding to the central direction. The sets are genuinely non-hyperbolic containing intermingled horseshoes of different hyperbolic behavior (contracting and expanding center). We prove that for every $k\ge 1$ there is a diffeomorphism $F$ with a transitive set $Λ$ as above such that the pressure map $P(t)=P(t\, φ)$ of the potential $φ= -\log \,\lVert dF|_{E^c}\rVert$ ($E^c$ the central direction) defined on $Λ$ has $k$ rich phase transitions. This means that there are parameters $t_\ell$, $\ell=1,...,k$, where $P(t)$ is not differentiable and this lack of differentiability is due to the coexistence of two equilibrium states of $t_\ell\,φ$ with positive entropy and different Birkhoff averages. Each phase transition is associated to a gap in the central Lyapunov spectrum of $F$ on $Λ$.

Visible parts of fractal percolation

We study dimensional properties of visible parts of fractal percolation in the plane. Provided that the dimension of the fractal percolation is at least 1, we show that, conditioned on non-extinction, almost surely all visible parts from lines are 1-dimensional. Furthermore, almost all of them have positive and finite Hausdorff measure. We also verify analogous results for visible parts from points. These results are motivated by an open problem on the dimensions of visible parts.

Low temperature spin fluctuations in geometrically frustrated Yb3Ga5O12

In the garnet structure compound Yb3Ga5O12, the Yb3+ ions (ground state effective spin S' = 1/2) are situated on two interpenetrating corner sharing triangular sublattices such that frustrated magnetic interactions are possible. Previous specific heat measurements evidenced the development of short range magnetic correlations below 0.5K and a lambda-transition at 54mK (Filippi et al. J. Phys. C: Solid State Physics 13 (1980) 1277). From 170-Yb M"ossbauer spectroscopy measurements down to 36mK, we find there is no static magnetic order at temperatures below that of the lambda-transition. Below 0.3K, the fluctuation frequency of the short range correlated Yb3+ moments progressively slows down and as the temperature tends to 0, the frequency tends to a quasi-saturated value of 3 x 10^9 s^-1. We also examined the Yb3+ paramagnetic relaxation rates up to 300K using 172-Yb perturbed angular correlation measurements: they evidence phonon driven processes.

Magnetic properties of Yb2Mo2O7 and Gd2Mo2O7 from rare earth Mossbauer measurements

Using 170-Yb and 155-Gd Mossbauer measurements down to 0.03K, we have examined the semiconducting pyrochlore Yb2Mo2O7 where the Mo intra-sublattice interaction is anti-ferromagnetic and the metallic pyrochlore Gd2Mo2O7 where this interaction is ferromagnetic. Additional information was obtained from susceptibility, magnetisation and 172-Yb perturbed angular correlation measurements. The microscopic measurements evidence lattice disorder which is important in Yb2Mo2O7 and modest in Gd2Mo2O7. Magnetic irreversibilities occur at 17K in Yb2Mo2O7 and at 75K in Gd2Mo2O7 and below these temperatures the rare earths carry magnetic moments which are induced through couplings with the Mo sublattice. In Gd2Mo2O7, we observe the steady state Gd hyperfine populations at 0.027K are out of thermal equilibrium, indicating that Gd and Mo spin fluctuations persist at very low temperatures. Frustration is thus operative in this essentially isotropic pyrochlore where the dominant Mo intra-sublattice interaction is ferromagnetic.

Transition and spin dynamics at very low temperature in the pyrochlores Yb2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7

The very low temperature properties of two pyrochlore compounds, Yb2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7, were investigated using an ensemble of microscopic and bulk techniques. In both compounds, a first order transition is evidenced, as well as spin dynamics persisting down to the 20mK range. The transition however has a quite different character in the two materials: whereas that in Gd2Sn2O7$ (at 1K) is a magnetic transition towards long range order, that in Yb2Ti2O7 (at 0.24K) is reminiscent of the liquid-gas transition, in the sense that it involves a 4 orders of magnitude drop of the spin fluctuation frequency; furthermore, no long range order is observed. These unusual features we attribute to frustration of the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the pyrochlore lattice.

First Order Transition in the Spin Dynamics of Geometrically Frustrated Yb2Ti2O7

Using neutron diffraction, 170Yb Mossbauer and muSR spectroscopies, we have examined the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 where the Yb3+ S'=1/2 ground state has planar anisotropy. Below ~0.24K, the temperature of the known specific heat lambda transition, there is no long range magnetic order. We show that the transition corresponds to a first order change in the fluctuation rate of the Yb3+ spins. Above the transition temperature, the rate, in the GHz range, follows a thermal excitation law, whereas below, the rate, in the MHz range, is essentially temperature independent indicative of a quantum fluctuation regime.
