The Physics of Herwig 7

We present the physics foundations and recent developments of Herwig 7, the modern successor of the original HERWIG and Herwig++ series. Herwig 7 provides a flexible and systematically improvable framework for the simulation of high-energy lepton and hadron collisions, with particular emphasis on QCD and EW effects. Hard scattering processes are generated within the automated Matchbox framework, which integrates external amplitude providers, supports tree-level, next-to-leading-order (NLO) and loop-induced matrix elements, and implements subtraction schemes, multi-channel phase-space sampling, dynamic scale choices and both POWHEG- and MC@NLO-type matching algorithms. Consistent multijet merging at LO and NLO is provided, enabling precise predictions across a wide range of SM processes. Parton radiation is simulated using two complementary showers: an angular-ordered shower incorporating QCD coherence and the heavy-quark dead-cone effect, and a dipole shower optimised for NLO matching and multijet merging. Higher-order corrections are included through matrix-element corrections and dedicated reweighting techniques, while QED and EW radiation are treated using a YFS formalism and EW showering algorithms. The modelling of non-perturbative physics employs an advanced cluster hadronization framework with improved cluster formation, fission and decay, as well as colour reconnection models, heavy-quark effects and interfaces to alternative hadronization schemes. An extended eikonal multiple-partonic-scattering model, incorporating semi-hard and soft components together with diffractive interactions, enables realistic descriptions of minimum-bias and underlying-event data. Herwig 7 thus represents a versatile event generator, providing a coherent, modular and extensible platform for Standard Model and beyond-the-Standard-Model collider phenomenology at current and future facilities.

Reconstruction of proton relative stopping power with a granular calorimeter detector model

Proton computed tomography (pCT) aims to facilitate precise dose planning for hadron therapy, a promising and effective method for cancer treatment. Hadron therapy utilizes protons and heavy ions to deliver well focused doses of radiation, leveraging the Bragg peak phenomenon to target tumors while sparing healthy tissues. The Bergen pCT Collaboration aims to develop a novel pCT scanner, and accompanying reconstruction algorithms to overcome current limitations. This paper focuses on advancing the track- and image reconstruction algorithms, thereby enhancing the precision of the dose planning and reducing side effects of hadron therapy. A neural network aided track reconstruction method is presented.

Application of the VMM ASIC for SiPM-based calorimetry

Highly integrated multichannel readout electronics is crucial in contemporary particle physics experiments. A novel silicon photomultiplier readout system based on the VMM3a ASIC was developed, for the first time exploiting this chip for calorimetric purposes. To extend the dynamic range the signal from each SiPM channel was processed by two electronics channels with different gain. A fully operational prototype system with 256 SiPM readout channels allowed the collection of data from a prototype of the ALICE Forward Hadron Calorimeter (FoCal-H). The design and the test beam results using high energy hadron beams are presented and discussed, confirming the applicability of VMM3a-based solutions for energy measurements in a high rate environment.

Beam test of n-type Silicon pad array detector at PS CERN

This work reports the testing of a Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) prototype based on an n-type Si pad array detector at the CERN PS accelerator. The FoCal is a proposed upgrade in the ALICE detector operating within the pseudorapidity range of 3.2 < $\mathrm{\eta}$ < 5.8. It aims to measure direct photons, neutral hadrons, vector mesons, and jets for the study of gluon saturation effects in the unexplored region of low momentum fraction x ($\mathrm{\sim10^{-5} - 10^{-6}}$). The prototype is a $\mathrm{8\times9}$ n-type Si pad array detector with each pad occupying one cm$^2$ area, fabricated on a 6-in, 325~$\mathrm{\pm 10 \thinspace \mu}$m thick, and high-resistivity ($\sim$7 k$\Omega \thinspace$ cm) Si wafer which is readout using HGCROCv2 chip. The detector is tested using pion beams of energy 10~GeV and electron beams of energy 1-5~GeV. The measurements of the Minimum Ionizing Particle (MIP) response of pions and the shower profiles of electrons are reported.

Performance of the electromagnetic and hadronic prototype segments of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter

We present the performance of a full-length prototype of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). The detector is composed of a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic sampling calorimeter with longitudinal and transverse segmentation (FoCal-E) of about 20$X_0$ and a hadronic copper-scintillating-fiber calorimeter (FoCal-H) of about 5$\lambda_{\rm int}$. The data were taken between 2021 and 2023 at the CERN PS and SPS beam lines with hadron (electron) beams up to energies of 350 (300) GeV. Regarding FoCal-E, we report a comprehensive analysis of its response to minimum ionizing particles across all pad layers. The longitudinal shower profile of electromagnetic showers is measured with a layer-wise segmentation of 1$X_0$. As a projection to the performance of the final detector in electromagnetic showers, we demonstrate linearity in the full energy range, and show that the energy resolution fulfills the requirements for the physics needs. Additionally, the performance to separate two-showers events was studied by quantifying the transverse shower width. Regarding FoCal-H, we report a detailed analysis of the response to hadron beams between 60 and 350 GeV. The results are compared to simulations obtained with a Geant4 model of the test beam setup, which in particular for FoCal-E are in good agreement with the data. The energy resolution of FoCal-E was found to be lower than 3% at energies larger than 100 GeV. The response of FoCal-H to hadron beams was found to be linear, albeit with a significant intercept that is about factor 2 larger than in simulations. Its resolution, which is non-Gaussian and generally larger than in simulations, was quantified using the FWHM, and decreases from about 16% at 100 GeV to about 11% at 350 GeV. The discrepancy to simulations, which is particularly evident at low hadron energies, needs to be further investigated.

Three new VHS-DES Quasars at 6.7 < z < 6.9 and Emission Line Properties at z > 6.5

We report the results from a search for z > 6.5 quasars using the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 dataset combined with the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and WISE All-Sky Survey. Our photometric selection method is shown to be highly efficient in identifying clean samples of high-redshift quasars leading to spectroscopic confirmation of three new quasars - VDESJ 0244-5008 (z=6.724), VDESJ 0020-3653 (z=6.834) and VDESJ 0246-5219 (z=6.90) - which were selected as the highest priority candidates in the survey data without any need for additional follow-up observations. The new quasars span the full range in luminosity covered by other z>6.5 quasar samples (J AB = 20.2 to 21.3; M1450 = -25.6 to -26.6). We have obtained spectroscopic observations in the near infrared for VDESJ 0244-5008 and VDESJ 0020-3653 as well as our previously identified quasar, VDESJ 0224-4711 at z=6.50 from Reed et al. (2017). We use the near infrared spectra to derive virial black-hole masses from the full-width-half-maximum of the MgII line. These black-hole masses are ~ 1 - 2 x 10$^9$M$_\odot$. Combining with the bolometric luminosities of these quasars of L$_{\rm{bol}}\simeq$ 1 - 3 x 10$^{47}$implies that the Eddington ratios are high - $\simeq$0.6-1.1. We consider the C\textrm{\textsc{IV}} emission line properties of the sample and demonstrate that our high-redshift quasars do not have unusual C\textrm{\textsc{IV}} line properties when compared to carefully matched low-redshift samples. Our new DES+VHS $z>6.5$ quasars now add to the growing census of luminous, rapidly accreting supermassive black-holes seen well into the epoch of reionisation.

Test Beam Performance Measurements for the Phase I Upgrade of the CMS Pixel Detector

A new pixel detector for the CMS experiment was built in order to cope with the instantaneous luminosities anticipated for the Phase~I Upgrade of the LHC. The new CMS pixel detector provides four-hit tracking with a reduced material budget as well as new cooling and powering schemes. A new front-end readout chip mitigates buffering and bandwidth limitations, and allows operation at low comparator thresholds. In this paper, comprehensive test beam studies are presented, which have been conducted to verify the design and to quantify the performance of the new detector assemblies in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Under optimal conditions, the tracking efficiency is $99.95\pm0.05\,\%$, while the intrinsic spatial resolutions are $4.80\pm0.25\,μ\mathrm{m}$ and $7.99\pm0.21\,μ\mathrm{m}$ along the $100\,μ\mathrm{m}$ and $150\,μ\mathrm{m}$ pixel pitch, respectively. The findings are compared to a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the pixel detector and good agreement is found.

DES J0454-4448: Discovery of the First Luminous z > 6 Quasar from the Dark Energy Survey

We present the first results of a survey for high redshift, z $\ge$ 6, quasars using izY multi-colour photometric observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Here we report the discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of the $\rm z_{AB}, Y_{AB}$ = 20.2, 20.2 (M$_{1450}$ = $-$26.5) quasar DES J0454$-$4448 with an emission line redshift of z = 6.10$\pm$0.03 and a HI near zone size of 4.6 $\pm$ 1.7 Mpc.The quasar was selected as an i-band drop out with i$-$z = 2.46 and z$_{AB} < 21.5$ from an area of $\rm \sim$300 deg$^2$. It is the brightest of our 43 candidates and was identified for follow-up spectroscopically solely based on the DES i$-$z and z$-$Y colours. The quasar is detected by WISE and has $W1_{AB} = 19.68$. The discovery of one spectroscopically confirmed quasar with 5.7 $<$ z $<$ 6.5 and z$_{AB} \leq$ 20.2 is consistent with recent determinations of the luminosity function at z $\sim$ 6. DES when completed will have imaged $\rm \sim$5000 deg$^2$ to $Y_{AB}$ = 23.0 ($5σ$ point source) and we expect to discover $>$ 50-100 new quasars with z $>$ 6 including 3-10 with z $>$ 7 dramatically increasing the numbers of quasars currently known that are suitable for detailed studies including determination of the neutral HI fraction of the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the epoch of Hydrogen reionization.

Di-boson Production beyond NLO QCD and Anomalous Couplings

In these proceedings, we review results for several di-boson production processes beyond NLO QCD at high transverse momenta using the VBFNLO Monte-Carlo program together with the LOOPSIM method. Additionally, we show for the WZ production process how higher order QCD corrections can resemble anomalous coupling effects.

Two bright z > 6 quasars from VST ATLAS and a new method of optical plus mid-infra-red colour selection

We present the discovery of two z > 6 quasars, selected as i band dropouts in the VST ATLAS survey. Our first quasar has redshift, z = 6.31 \pm 0.03, z band magnitude, z_AB = 19.63 \pm 0.08 and rest frame 1450A absolute magnitude, M_1450 = -27.8 \pm 0.2, making it the joint second most luminous quasar known at z > 6. The second quasar has z = 6.02 \pm 0.03, z_AB = 19.54 \pm 0.08 and M_1450 = -27.0 \pm 0.1. We also recover a z = 5.86 quasar discovered by Venemans et al. (2015, in prep.). To select our quasars we use a new 3D colour space, combining the ATLAS optical colours with mid-infra-red data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We use i_AB - z_AB colour to exclude main sequence stars, galaxies and lower redshift quasars, W1 - W2 to exclude L dwarfs and z_AB - W2 to exclude T dwarfs. A restrictive set of colour cuts returns only our three high redshift quasars and no contaminants, albeit with a sample completeness of ~50%. We discuss how our 3D colour space can be used to reject the majority of contaminants from samples of bright 5.7 < z < 6.3 quasars, replacing follow-up near-infra-red photometry, whilst retaining high completeness.

Precision Measurements of Higgs Couplings: Implications for New Physics Scales

The measured properties of the recently discovered Higgs boson are in good agreement with predictions from the Standard Model. However, small deviations in the Higgs couplings may manifest themselves once the currently large uncertainties will be improved as part of the LHC program and at a future Higgs factory. We review typical new physics scenarios that lead to observable modifications of the Higgs interactions. They can be divided into two broad categories: mixing effects as in portal models or extended Higgs sectors, and vertex loop effects from new matter or gauge fields. In each model we relate coupling deviations to their effective new physics scale. It turns out that with percent level precision the Higgs couplings will be sensitive to the multi-TeV regime.

Release Note - VBFNLO 2.7.0

VBFNLO is a flexible parton level Monte Carlo program for the simulation of vector boson fusion (VBF), double and triple vector boson (plus jet) production as well as QCD-induced single and double vector boson production plus two jets in hadronic collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant. Furthermore, Higgs boson plus two jet production via gluon fusion at the one-loop level is included. This note briefly describes the main additional features and processes that have been added in the new release -- VBFNLO Version 2.7.0. At NLO QCD several new processes are available. These are $W^\pmγ$ and $HH$ production in VBF, the QCD-induced single and double vector boson plus two jets processes $W^\pm jj$, $W^\pm Zjj$, $W^\pmγjj$, same-sign $W^\pm W^\pm jj$, and the Higgs-strahlung process $W^\pm H$ (plus jet) production. Anomalous couplings are now available for all VBF, diboson and triboson (plus jet) processes including the new VBF $W^\pmγjj$ implementation, as well as in the Higgs-strahlung (plus jet) process. Semi-leptonic decay modes are supported for the following diboson, triboson and VBF processes: $VV$, $VVV$, $VVγ$ production and $VV$ production via VBF, where $V$ denotes a massive gauge boson, i.e. $W^\pm$ or $Z$. Additionally, the VBF-Higgs production process with decay into $WW$ or $ZZ$ supports semi-leptonic decays of the gauge bosons. All these semi-leptonic processes contain the possibility to include anomalous gauge boson couplings.

Study of Electroweak Interactions at the Energy Frontier

With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the spectrum of particles in the Standard Model (SM) is complete. It is more important than ever to perform precision measurements and to test for deviations from SM predictions in the electroweak sector. In this report, we investigate two themes in the arena of precision electroweak measurements: the electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) that test the particle content and couplings in the SM and the minimal supersymmetric SM, and the measurements involving multiple gauge bosons in the final state which provide unique probes of the basic tenets of electroweak symmetry breaking. Among the important EWPOs we focus our discussion on M_W and sin^2 theta_eff^l, and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings probed by triboson production and vector boson scattering. We investigate the thresholds of precision that need to be achieved in order to be sensitive to new physics. We study the precision that can be achieved at various facilities on these observables. We discuss the calculational tools needed to predict SM rates and distributions in order to perform these measurements at the required precision. This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Precision Study of Electroweak Interactions working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass).

Release Note -- Vbfnlo-2.6.0

Vbfnlo is a flexible parton level Monte Carlo program for the simulation of vector boson fusion (VBF), double and triple vector boson (plus jet) production in hadronic collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant, as well as Higgs boson plus two jet production via gluon fusion at the one-loop level. This note briefly describes the main additional features and processes that have been added in the new release -- Vbfnlo Version 2.6.0. At NLO QCD diboson production (Wγ, WZ, ZZ, Zγand γγ), same-sign W pair production via vector boson fusion and the process Wγγj have been implemented (for which one-loop tensor integrals up to six-point functions are included). In addition, gluon induced diboson production can be studied separately at the leading order (one-loop) level. The diboson processes WW, WZ and Wγcan be run with anomalous gauge boson couplings, and anomalous couplings between a Higgs and a pair of gauge bosons is included in WW, ZZ, Zγand γγdiboson production. The code has also been extended to include anomalous gauge boson couplings for single vector boson production via VBF, and a spin-2 model has been implemented for diboson pair production via vector boson fusion.
