Gravitational Backreaction of Matter Inhomogeneities

The non-linearity of Einstein's equations makes it possible for small-scale matter inhomogeneities to affect the Universe at cosmological distances. We study the size of such effects using a simple heuristic model that captures the most important backreaction effect due to nonrelativistc matter, as well as several exact solutions describing inhomogeneous and anisotropic expanding universes. We find that the effects are $O(H^2l^2/c^2)$ or smaller, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter and $l$ the typical size scale of inhomogeneities. For virialized structures this is of order $v^2/c^2$, where $v$ is the characteristic peculiar velocity.

Tachyons in a slice of AdS

Stability of AdS space allows scalar fields to have negative mass squared as long as the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound is satisfied. In a compactification of AdS instead, to avoid instabilities, a tachyonic bulk mass must be supplemented by appropriate brane actions. In this paper we clarify the meaning of the lower bound in the Randall-Sundrum scenario with two branes and explain how the instability disappears in the infinite space limit. A CFT interpretation is also given as radiative symmetry breaking.

Signals of the degenerate BESS model at the LHC

We discuss the possible signals of the degenerate BESS model at the LHC. This model describes a strongly interacting scenario responsible of the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry. It predicts two triplets of extra gauge bosons which are almost degenerate in mass. Due to this feature, the model has the property of decoupling and therefore, at low energies (below or of the order of $100 GeV$) it is nearly indistinguishable from the Standard Model. However the new resonances, both neutral and charged, should give quite spectacular signals at the LHC, where the c.o.m. energy will allow to produce these gauge bosons directly.
