Experimental Evidence for Selection Rules in Multiphoton Double Ionization of Helium

We report on the observation of phase space modulations in the correlated electron emission after strong field double ionization of helium using laser pulses with a wavelength of 394~nm and an intensity of $3\cdot10^{14}$W/cm$^2$. Those modulations are identified as direct results of quantum mechanical selection rules predicted by many theoretical calculations. They only occur for an odd number of absorbed photons. By that we attribute this effect to the parity of the continuum wave function.

Nearest-neighbor Kitaev exchange blocked by charge order in electron doped $α$-RuCl$_{3}$

A quantum spin-liquid might be realized in $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, a honeycomb-lattice magnetic material with substantial spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a Mott insulator, which implies the possibility that novel exotic phases occur upon doping. Here, we study the electronic structure of this material when intercalated with potassium by photoemission spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. We obtain a stable stoichiometry at K$_{0.5}$RuCl$_3$. This gives rise to a peculiar charge disproportionation into formally Ru$^{2+}$ (4$d^6$) and Ru$^{3+}$ (4$d^5$). Every Ru 4$d^5$ site with one hole in the $t_{2g}$ shell is surrounded by nearest neighbors of 4$d^6$ character, where the $t_{2g}$ level is full and magnetically inert. Thus, each type of Ru sites forms a triangular lattice and nearest-neighbor interactions of the original honeycomb are blocked.

Spectra and spectral correlations of microwave graphs with symplectic symmetry

Following an idea by Joyner et al. [EPL, 107 (2014) 50004] a microwave graph with antiunitary symmetry T obeying T^2=-1 has been realized. The Kramers doublets expected for such systems have been clearly identified and could be lifted by a perturbation which breaks the antiunitary symmetry. The observed spectral level spacings distribution of the Kramers doublets is in agreement with the predictions from the Gaussian symplectic ensemble (GSE), expected for chaotic systems with such a symmetry. In addition results on the two-point correlation function, the spectral form factor, the number variance and the spectral rigidity are presented, as well as on the transition from GSE to GOE statistics by continuously changing T from T^2=-1 to T^2=1.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility study for the measurement of $πN$ TDAs at PANDA in $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0$

The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $π^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/ψ\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\toπ^+π^-π^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0π^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Non-Sequential Double Ionization by Counter Rotating Circularly Polarized Two-Color Laser Fields

We report on non-sequential double ionization of Ar by a laser pulse consisting of two counter rotating circularly polarized fields (390 nm and 780 nm). The double ionization probability depends strongly on the relative intensity of the two fields and shows a "knee"-like structure as function of intensity. We conclude that double ionization is driven by a beam of nearly monoenergetic recolliding electrons, which can be controlled in intensity and energy by the field parameters. The electron momentum distributions show the recolliding electron as well as a second electron which escapes from an intermediate excited state of Ar$^+$.

Imaging the He$_2$ quantum halo state using a free electron laser

We report on coulomb explosion imaging of the wavefunction of the quantum halo system He$_2$. Each atom of this system is ionized by tunnelionization in a femto second laser pulse and in a second experiment by single photon ionization employing a free electron laser. We visualize the exponential decay of the probability density of the tunneling particle over distance for over two orders of magnitude up to an internuclear distance of 250 Å. By fitting the slope of the density in the tunneling regime we obtain a binding energy of 151.9 $\pm$ 13.3 neV, which is in agreement with most recent calculations.

Electronic structure of stacking faults in hexagonal graphite

We present results of self-consistent, full-potential electronic structure calculations for slabs of hexagonal graphite with stacking faults and for slabs with one displaced surface layer. There are two types of stacking faults, which differ qualitatively in their chemical bonding picture. We find, that both types induce localized interface bands near the symmetry line K-M in the Brillouin zone and a related peak in the local density of states (LDOS) very close to the Fermi energy, which should give rise to a dominating contribution of the interface bands to the local conductivity at the stacking faults. In contrast, a clean surface does not host any surface bands in the energy range of the pi and sigma bands, and the LDOS near the surface is even depleted. On the other hand, displacement of even one single surface layer induces a surface band near K-M. A special role play p_z-bonded dimers (directed perpendicular to the layers) in the vicinity of one type of stacking faults. They produce a half-filled pair of interface states / interface resonances. The formation energy of both types of stacking faults and the surface energy are estimated.

Band dependent emergence of heavy quasiparticles in CeCoIn5

We investigate the low temperature (T $<$ 2 K) electronic structure of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 (T$_c$ = 2.3 K) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The hybridization between conduction electrons and f-electrons, which ultimately leads to the emergence of heavy quasiparticles responsible for the various unusual properties of such materials, is directly monitored and shown to be strongly band dependent. In particular the most two-dimensional band is found to be the least hybridized one. A simplified multiband version of the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) is used to describe the data, resulting in semi-quantitative agreement with previous bulk sensitive results from de-Haas-van-Alphen measurements.

Theoretical investigation into the possibility of very large moments in Fe16N2

We examine the mystery of the disputed high-magnetization α"-Fe16N2 phase, employing the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof screened hybrid functional method, perturbative many-body corrections through the GW approximation, and onsite Coulomb correlations through the GGA+U method. We present a first-principles computation of the effective on-site Coulomb interaction (Hubbard U) between localized 3d electrons employing the constrained random-phase approximation (cRPA), finding only somewhat stronger on-site correlations than in bcc Fe. We find that the hybrid functional method, the GW approximation, and the GGA+U method (using parameters computed from cRPA) yield an average spin moment of 2.9, 2.6 - 2.7, and 2.7 μ_B per Fe, respectively.

Reconstruction of the wavefunctions of coupled nanoscopic emitters using a coherent optical technique

We show that using coherent, spatially resolved spectroscopy, complex hybrid wave functions can be disentangled into the individual wave functions of the individual emitters. This way, detailed information on the coupling of the individual emitters, not available in far-field spectroscopy can be obtained. The proposed quantum state tomography relies on the ability to selectively excite each emitter individually by spatially localized pulses. Simulations of coupled semiconductor Ga/InAs quantum dots, using light fields available in current nanoplasmonics, show that even undesired resonances can be removed from measured spectra. The method can also be applied to study the internal coupling of pigments in photosythesis and artificial light harvesting.

The pK0Σ+ final state in proton-proton collisions

This paper reports results from a study of the reaction pp->pK0Σ+ at beam momenta of p_{beam} = 2950, 3059, and 3200 MeV/c (excess energies of ε= 126, 161, and 206 MeV). Total cross sections were determined for all energies; a set of differential cross sections (Dalitz plots; invariant mass spectra of all two-body subsystems; angular distributions of all final state particles; distributions in helicity and Jackson frames) are presented for ε= 161 MeV. The total cross sections are proportional to the volume of available three-body phase-space indicating that the transition matrix element does not change significantly in this range of excess energies. It is concluded from the differential data that the reaction proceeds dominantly via the N(1710)P_{11} and/or N(1720)P_{13} resonance(s); N(1650)S_{11} and Δ(1600)P_{33} could also contribute.

Proposal for an interference experiment to test the applicability of quantum theory to event-based processes

We analyze a single-particle Mach-Zehnder interferometer experiment in which the path length of one arm may change (randomly or systematically) according to the value of an external two-valued variable $x$, for each passage of a particle through the interferometer. Quantum theory predicts an interference pattern that is independent of the sequence of the values of $x$. On the other hand, corpuscular models that reproduce the results of quantum optics experiments carried out up to this date show a reduced visibility and a shift of the interference pattern depending on the details of the sequence of the values of $x$. The proposed experiment will show that: (1) it can be described by quantum theory, and thus not by the current corpuscular models, or (2) it cannot be described by quantum theory but can be described by the corpuscular models or variations thereof, or (3) it can neither be described by quantum theory nor by corpuscular models. Therefore, the proposed experiment can be used to determine to what extent quantum theory provides a description of observed events beyond the usual statistical level.

Density-functional investigation of rhombohedral stacks of graphene: topological surface states, nonlinear dielectric response, and bulk limit

A DFT-based investigation of rhombohedral (ABC)-type graphene stacks in finite static electric fields is presented. Electronic band structures and field-induced charge densities are compared with related literature data as well as with own results on (AB) stacks. It is found, that the undoped AB-bilayer has a tiny Fermi line consisting of one electron pocket around the K-point and one hole pocket on the line K-$Γ$. In contrast to (AB) stacks, the breaking of translational symmetry by the surface of finite (ABC) stacks produces a gap in the bulk-like states for slabs up to a yet unknown critical thickness $N^{\rm semimet} \gg 10$, while ideal (ABC) bulk ($β$-graphite) is a semi-metal. Unlike in (AB) stacks, the ground state of (ABC) stacks is shown to be topologically non-trivial in the absence of external electric field. Consequently, surface states crossing the Fermi level must unavoidably exist in the case of (ABC)-type stacking, which is not the case in (AB)-type stacks. These surface states in conjunction with the mentioned gap in the bulk-like states have two major implications. First, electronic transport parallel to the slab is confined to a surface region up to the critical layer number $N^{\rm semimet}$. Related implications are expected for stacking domain walls and grain boundaries. Second, the electronic properties of (ABC) stacks are highly tunable by an external electric field. In particular, the dielectric response is found to be strongly nonlinear and can e.g. be used to discriminate slabs with different layer numbers. Thus, (ABC) stacks rather than (AB) stacks with more than two layers should be of potential interest for applications relying on the tunability by an electric field.

Production of Lambda and Sigma^0 hyperons in proton-proton collisions

This paper reports results on simultaneous measurements of the reaction channels pp -> pK+Λand pp -> pK+Σ^0 at excess energies of 204, 239, and 284 MeV (Λ) and 127, 162, and 207 MeV (Σ^0). Total and differential cross sections are given for both reactions. It is concluded from the measured total cross sections that the high energy limit of the cross section ratio is almost reached at an excess energy of only about 200 MeV. From the differential distributions observed in the overall CMS as well as in the Jackson and helicity frames, a significant contribution of interfering nucleon resonances to the Λproduction mechanism is concluded while resonant Σ^0-production seems to be of lesser importance and takes place only through specific partial waves of the entrance channel. The data also indicate that kaon exchange plays a minor role in the case of Λ- but an important role for Σ^0-production. Thus the peculiar energy dependence of the Λ-to-Σ^0 cross section ratio appears in a new light as its explanation requires more than mere differences between the pΛand the pΣ^0 final state interaction. The data provide a benchmark for theoretical models already available or yet to come.

Influence of N*-resonances on hyperon production in the channel pp->K+ Lambda p at 2.95, 3.20 and 3.30 GeV/c beam momentum

Hyperon production in the threshold region was studied in the reaction pp -> K+Lp using the time-of-flight spectrometer COSY-TOF. Exclusive data, covering the full phase-space, were taken at the three different beam momenta of p_beam=2.95, 3.20 and 3.30 GeV/c, corresponding to excess energies of epsilon=204, 285 and 316 MeV, respectively. Total cross-sections were deduced for the three beam momenta to be 23.9+/-0.8 +/-2.0 ub, 28.4+/-1.3 +/-2.2 ub and 35.0+/-1.3 +/-3.0 ub. Differential observables including Dalitz plots were obtained. The analysis of the Dalitz plots reveals a strong influence of the N(1650)-resonance at p_beam=2.95 GeV/c, whereas for the higher momenta an increasing relative contribution of the N(1710)- and/or of the N(1720)-resonance was observed. In addition, the pL-final-state interaction turned out to have a significant influence on the Dalitz plot distribution.

Systematic study of the pp -> pp omega reaction

A systematic study of the production of omega-mesons in proton-proton-collisions was carried out in a kinematically complete experiment at three excess energies(epsilon= 92, 128, 173MeV). Both protons were detected using the large-acceptance COSY-TOF spectrometer at an external beam line at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The total cross section, angular distributions of both omega-mesons and protons were measured and presented in various reference frames such as the overall CMS, helicity and Jackson frame. In addition, the orientation of the omega-spin and invariant mass spectra were determined. We observe omega-production to take place dominantly in Ss and Sp final states at epsilon = 92, 128 MeV and, additionally, in Sd at epsilon= 173 MeV. No obvious indication of resonant omega-production via N^*-resonances was found, as proton angular distributions are almost isotropic and invariant mass spectra are compatible with phase space distributions. A dominant role of ^3P_1 and ^1S_0 initial partial waves for omega-production was concluded from the orientation of the decay plane of the omega-meson. Although the Jackson angle distributions in the omega-p-Jackson frame are anisotropic we argue that this is not an indication of a resonance but rather a kinematical effect reflecting the anisotropy of the omega angular distribution. The helicity angle distribution in the omega-p-helicity frame shows an anisotropy which probably reflects effects of the omega angular momenta in the final state; this observable may be, in addition to the orientation of the omega decay plane, the most sensitive one to judge the validity of theoretical descriptions of the production process.
