Electroweak Corrections to Four-Fermion Production in e+e- Annihilation

The recently completed calculation of the full electroweak O(alpha) corrections to the charged-current four-fermion production processes e+e- --> nu_tau tau+ mu- anti-nu_mu, u anti-d mu- anti-nu_mu, and u anti-d s anti-c is briefly reviewed. The calculation is performed using complex gauge-boson masses, supplemented by complex couplings to restore gauge invariance. The evaluation of the occurring one-loop tensor integrals, which include 5- and 6-point functions, requires new techniques. The effects of the complete O(alpha) corrections to the total cross section and to some differential cross sections of physical interest are discussed and compared to predictions based on the double-pole approximation, revealing that the latter approximation is not sufficient to fully exploit the potential of a future linear collider in an analysis of W-boson pairs at high energies.

Multi-periodic oscillations of alpha Hya

We report the detection of multi-periodic oscillations of the cool evolved star alpha Hya (HD 81797, K3II-III). Two-hundred and forty-three high-resolution spectra (R=48,000) of this star have been obtained in March and April 2005 with FEROS at the 2.2 m-MPG/ESO telescope in La Silla Observatory, Chile. We observed oscillations in the stellar radial velocity and the asymmetry of the spectral line profile. We detected oscillation frequencies of the stellar radial velocity in two frequency regions, nu= 2-30 muHz and nu= 50-120 muHz. The corresponding periods are P= 0.6-5.6 days and P= 2.3-5.5 hours, respectively. In addition to these oscillations we also observed a trend in the radial velocity which shows evidence for a long-term variability. Furthermore, our measurements show a correlation between the variation in the radial velocity and the asymmetry of the spectral line profile, as measured in the bisector velocity spans. The line bisectors also show oscillations in the same frequency regions as those of the radial velocity. We identified 13 oscillation frequencies in the bisector variation with equidistant separations of 8.09 +- 0.32 muHz in the lower frequency region and 7.69 +- 0.47 muHz in the higher frequency region. The source of the short-term oscillations of alpha Hya is obviously due to non-radial stellar pulsations. These oscillations may have a similar origin like oscillations in solar-like stars. The detection of the multi-periodic oscillations in alpha-Hya makes this star to be an amenable target for asteroseismology, in particular, as it is a star in the red giant branch.

Crowded field 3D spectroscopy of LBV candidates in M33

We present integral field spectroscopy of the LBV candidate stars B416 and v532 in the local group galaxy M33. B416 is surrounded by an elongated ring-like nebula, which has a projected radius of 20x30 pc. From the datacube we create ionization and radial velocity maps of the nebula. The excitation of the gas decreases towards the outer part of the ring, while the inner part of the nebula is filled with a more excited gas. In the EW direction the ring is seen to expand with a maximum projected velocity amplitude of about 40 km/s. The eastern part approaches the observer. We estimate the nebula dynamical lifetime 8*10E5 years. It could be a residual MS bubble, which indicates a main-sequence or pre-LBV status of the star. We classify B416 as an "iron star" or B[e]-supergiant. In v532 an elongated nebula has been marginally detected. The total projected size of the nebula along the main axis is 30 pc, and the total radial velocity gradient is 44+/-11 km/s. v532 exhibits both strong photometric and spectral variability. At the time of our observations it was in an intermediate brightness state with a rich nitrogen spectrum. We classify v532 as an LBV, showing LBV <-> Ofpe/WN transitions. We stress the importance of integral field spectroscopy as the optimal technique for studying nebulae and the evolution of LBV-like stars in nearby galaxies.

An HST Search for Supernovae Accompanying X-ray Flashes

We present the results from an Hubble Space Telescope/ACS search for supernovae associated with X-ray flashes 020903, 040701, 040812 and 040916. We find strong evidence that XRF 020903 (z=0.25) was associated with a SN 1998bw-like supernova and confirm this using optical spectroscopy at t ~ 25 days. We find no evidence, however, for SN 1998bw-like supernovae associated with the other three events. In the case of XRF 040701 (z=0.21), we rule out even a faint supernova similar to SN 2002ap, using template light-curves for several local Type Ic supernovae. For the two cases in which the redshift is not known, XRFs 040812 and 040916, we derive robust redshift limits assuming they were accompanied by supernovae similar to SN 1998bw and compare these limits with photometric redshift constraints provided by their host galaxies. We supplement this analysis with results for three additional events (XRFs 011030, 020427 and 030723) and discuss the observed diversity of supernovae associated with X-ray flashes and gamma-ray bursts. We conclude that XRF-SNe exist, but can be significantly fainter than SN 1998bw, possibly consistent with the observed spread in local Type Ibc supernovae.

Optical and Infrared Photometry of the Type Ia Supernovae 1991T, 1991bg, 1999ek, 2001bt, 2001cn, 2001cz, and 2002bo

We present optical and/or infrared photometry of the Type Ia supernovae SN 1991T, SN 1991bg, SN 1999ek, SN 2001bt, SN 2001cn, SN 2001cz, and SN 2002bo. All but one of these supernovae have decline rate parameters Delta m_15(B) close to the median value of 1.1 for the whole class of Type Ia supernovae. The addition of these supernovae to the relationship between the near-infrared absolute magnitudes and Delta m_15(B) strengthens the previous relationships we have found, in that the maximum light absolute magnitudes are essentially independent of the decline rate parameter. (SN 1991bg, the prototype of the subclass of fast declining Type Ia supernovae, is a special case.) The dispersion in the Hubble diagram in JHK is only ~0.15 mag. The near-infrared properties of Type Ia supernovae continue to be excellent measures of the luminosity distances to the supernova host galaxies, due to the need for only small corrections from the epoch of observation to maximum light, low dispersion in absolute magnitudes at maximum light, and the minimal reddening effects in the near-infrared.

Integral field spectroscopy of the ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg II X-1

We present optical integral field observations of the H II region containing the ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg II X-1. We confirm the existence of an X-ray ionized nebula as the counterpart of the source due to the detection of an extended He II (4686A) region (21 x 47 pc) at the Chandra ACIS-S position. An extended blue objects with a size of 11 x 14 pc is coincident with the X-ray/He II region, which could indicate either a young stellar complex or a cluster. We have derived an X-ray to optical luminosity ratio of Lx/Lb>170, and presumable it is Lx/Lb~300-400 using the recent HST ACS data. We find a complex velocity dispersion at the position of the ULX. In addition, there is a radial velocity variation in the X-ray ionized region found in the He II emission of +-50 km/s on spatial scales of 2-3 arcsec. We believe that the putative black hole not only ionizes the surrounding HII gas, but also perturbs it dynamically (via jets or the accretion disk wind). The spatial analysis of the public Chandra ACIS-S data reveals a point-like X-ray source and marginal indication of an extended component (<<15 % of the total flux). The XMM-Newton EPIC-PN spectrum of HoII X-1 is best fitted with an absorbed power-law in addition to either a thermal thick plasma or a thermal thin plasma or a multi-colour disk black body (MCD). In all cases, the thermal component shows relatively low temperatures (kT~0.14-0.22 keV). Finally we discuss the optical/X-ray properties of HoII X-1 with regards to the possible nature of the source.

A Precise Measurement of the Tau Lifetime

The tau lepton lifetime has been measured with the e+e- -> tau+tau- events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in the years 1991-1995. Three different methods have been exploited, using both one-prong and three-prong tau decay channels. Two measurements have been made using events in which both taus decay to a single charged particle. Combining these measurements gave tau_tau (1 prong) = 291.8 +/- 2.3 (stat) +/- 1.5 (sys) fs. A third measurement using taus which decayed to three charged particles yielded tau_tau (3 prong) = 288.6 +/- 2.4 (stat) +/- 1.3 (sys) fs. These were combined with previous DELPHI results to measure the tau lifetime, using the full LEP1 data sample, to be tau_tau = 290.9 +/- 1.4 (stat) +/- 1.0 (sys) fs.

Physical renormalization condition for the quark-mixing matrix

We investigate the renormalization of the quark-mixing matrix in the Electroweak Standard Model. We show that the corresponding counterterms must be gauge independent as a consequence of extended BRS invariance. Using rigid SU(2)_L symmetry, we proof that the ultraviolet-divergent parts of the invariant counterterms are related to the field renormalization constants of the quark fields. We point out that for a general class of renormalization schemes rigid SU(2)_L symmetry cannot be preserved in its classical form, but is renormalized by finite counterterms. Finally, we discuss a genuine physical renormalization condition for the quark-mixing matrix that is gauge independent and does not destroy the symmetry between quark generations.

Electroweak corrections to e+ e- -> f anti-f H

Some of the most interesting Higgs-production processes at future e+ e- colliders are of the type e+ e- -> f anti-f H. We present a calculation of the complete O(alpha) corrections to these processes in the Standard Model for final-state neutrinos and top quarks. Initial-state radiation beyond O(alpha) at the leading-logarithmic level as well as QCD corrections are also included. The electroweak corrections turn out to be sizable and reach the order of +/-10% and will thus be an important part of precise theoretical predictions for future e+ e- colliders.

Long slit spectroscopy of a sample of isolated spirals with and without an AGN

We present the kinematical data obtained for a sample of active (Seyfert) and non active isolated spiral galaxies, based on long slit spectra along several position angles in the Halpha line region and, in some cases, in the Ca triplet region as well. Gas velocity distributions are presented, together with a simple circular rotation model that allows to determine the kinematical major axes. Stellar velocity distributions are also shown. The main result is that active and control galaxies seem to be equivalent in all kinematical aspects. For both subsamples, the departure from pure circular rotation in some galaxies can be explained by the presence of a bar and/or of a spiral arm. They also present the same kind of peculiarities, in particular, S-shape structures are quite common near the nuclear regions. They define very similar Tully-Fisher relations. Emission line ratios are given for all the detected HII regions; the analysis of the [NII]/Halpha metallicity indicator shows that active and non-active galaxies have indistinguishable disk metallicities. These results argue in favour of active and non-active isolated spiral galaxies having essentially the same properties, in agreement with our previous results based on the analysis of near infrared images. It appears now necessary to confirm these results on a larger sample.

Restoration of supersymmetric Slavnov-Taylor and Ward identities in presence of soft and spontaneous symmetry breaking

Supersymmetric Slavnov-Taylor and Ward identities are investigated in presence of soft and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We consider an abelian model where soft supersymmetry breaking yields a mass splitting between electron and selectron and triggers spontaneous symmetry breaking, and we derive corresponding identities that relate the electron and selectron masses with the Yukawa coupling. We demonstrate that the identities are valid in dimensional reduction and invalid in dimensional regularization and compute the necessary symmetry-restoring counterterms.

Electroweak corrections to e+ e- -> nu anti-nu H and e+ e- -> t anti-t H

The most interesting Higgs-production processes at future e+ e- colliders belong to the process class e+ e- -> f anti-f H. We study the full O(alpha) corrections to this reaction in the Standard Model for neutrinos and top quarks in the final state. Leading higher-order corrections from initial-state radiation and QCD corrections are also taken into account. Although cancellations between the different kinds of corrections occur, the full corrections are of the order of +/-10% and thus important ingredients in the theoretical predictions for future e+ e- colliders.

Radiative corrections to Higgs-boson production in association with top-quark pairs at e+ e- colliders

We have calculated the complete O(alpha) and O(alpha_s) radiative corrections to the Higgs-production process e+ e- -> t anti-t H in the Standard Model. This process is particularly interesting for the measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling at a future e+ e- collider. The calculation of the O(alpha) corrections is described in some detail including, in particular, the treatment of the soft and collinear singularities. The discussion of numerical results focuses on the total cross section as well as on angular and energy distributions of the outgoing particles. The electroweak corrections turn out to be sizable and can reach the order of +/-10%. They result from cancellations between electromagnetic, fermionic, and weak bosonic corrections, each of which are of the order of +/-10%.

Electroweak radiative corrections to e+ e- -> t anti-t H

We have calculated the complete electroweak O(alpha) radiative corrections to the Higgs-boson production process e+ e- -> t anti-t H in the electroweak Standard Model. Initial-state radiation beyond O(alpha) is included in the structure-function approach. The calculation of the corrections is briefly described, and numerical results are presented for the total cross section. Both the photonic and the genuine weak corrections reach the order of about 10% or even more and show a non-trivial dependence on the Higgs-boson mass and on the scattering energy. We compare our results with two previous calculations that obtained differing results at high energies.

The detection of stellar velocity dispersion drops in the central regions of five isolated Seyfert spirals

We analyze the kinematics of the central regions of five isolated Seyfert spiral galaxies from the DEGAS sample (four with new data presented in this paper, IC184, UGC3223, NGC2639, NGC6814, and NGC6951 from our previous data), by using long slit spectroscopy in the CaII triplet range (at ~ 8600 A) obtained with a 4m-class telescope. A drop of the velocity dispersions in the innermost 1-3 arcsec is observed in four of them, and hinted in the remaining galaxy (NGC6814). The available HST images for our sample together with another nine galaxies with reported velocity dispersion drops, are also used to investigate the presence of morphological inner structures at the scales of the kinematical drops. Evidence for disk-like shapes is found in 12 out of the 14 cases. The only exceptions are NGC6814 and NGC6951. Existing N-body simulations including stars, gas and star formation predict that such a drop is most probably due to a young stellar population born from dynamically cold gas accreted in a circumnuclear disk formed during an episode of central gas accretion driven by a bar. The equivalent widths of the Calcium triplet lines for our 5 galaxies have been measured. Even if the profiles could be formally consistent with constant EW(CaT) values, they seem to indicate the presence of a local maximum in the regions corresponding spatially to the drops; if confirmed, this would imply the presence of a different stellar population, whose properties could help constraining the models.

Electroweak radiative corrections to single Higgs-boson production in e+e- annihilation

We have calculated the complete electroweak O(alpha) radiative corrections to the single Higgs-boson production processes e+ e- --> nu_l anti-nu_l H (l=e,mu,tau) in the electroweak Standard Model. Initial-state radiation beyond O(alpha) is included in the structure-function approach. The calculation of the corrections is briefly described, and numerical results are presented for the total cross section. In the G_mu scheme, the bulk of the corrections is due to initial-state radiation, which affects the cross section at the level of -7% at high energies and even more in the ZH threshold region. The remaining bosonic and fermionic corrections are at the level of a few per cent. The confusing situation in the literature regarding differing results for the fermionic corrections to this process is clarified.

Electroweak radiative corrections to e+ e- -> nu nubar H

The complete electroweak O(alpha) radiative corrections to the Higgs-boson production processes e+ e- -> nu_l anti-nu_l H (l=e,mu,tau) are calculated in the electroweak Standard Model. For e+ e- -> nu_e anti-nu_e H, where ZH production and W-boson fusion contribute, both production channels are added coherently. The calculation of the corrections is described in some detail including, in particular, the treatment of the Z-boson resonance in the ZH-production channel. The discussion of numerical results focusses on the total cross section as well as on angular and energy distributions of the Higgs boson. In the Gmu-scheme, the bulk of the corrections is due to initial-state radiation. The corrections turn out to reduce the total cross section by \sim 10% for high energies, where the W-boson fusion dominates. In this region, the corrections depend only weakly on the energy and the production angle of the Higgs boson. Based on an analysis of the leading universal corrections, a simple improved Born approximation is introduced. This approximation describes the corrected cross section within about 3%.

Infrared Light Curves of Type Ia Supernovae

This paper provides a progress report on a collaborative program at the Las Campanas and Cerro Tololo Observatories to observe the near-IR light curves of Type Ia supernovae. We discuss how the morphologies of the JHK light curves change as a function of the decline rate. Evidence is presented which indicates that the absolute magnitudes in the H band have little or no dependence on the decline rate, suggesting that SNe Ia may be nearly perfect cosmological standard candles in the near-IR. A preliminary Hubble diagram in the H band is presented and compared with a similar diagram in V for the same objects. Finally, observations of two peculiar supernovae, 1999ac and 2001ay, are briefly discussed.
