Inelastic neutron scattering and lattice dynamical calculations in BaFe2As2

We report here first extensive measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon density of states of BaFe2As2, the parent compound of the newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors, using inelastic neutron scattering. The experiments were carried out on the thermal time-of-flight neutron spectrometer IN4 at the ILL on a polycrystalline sample. There is no appreciable change in the spectra between T = 10 K and 200 K, although the sample undergoes a magnetic as well as a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition at 140 K. This indicates a rather harmonic phonon system. Shell model lattice dynamical calculations based on interatomic potentials are carried out to characterize the phonon data. The calculations predict a shift of the Ba-phonons to higher energies at 4 GPa. The average energy of the phonons of the Ba-sublattice is also predicted to increase on partial substitution of Ba by K to Ba0.6K0.4. The calculations show good agreement with the experimental phonon spectra, and also with the specific heat data from the literature.

Superconductivity in novel Ge-based skutterudites: {Sr,Ba}Pt_4Ge_{12}

Combining experiments and ab initio models we report on $\rm SrPt_4Ge_{12}$ and $\rm BaPt_4Ge_{12}$ as members of a novel class of superconducting skutterudites, where Sr or Ba atoms stabilize a framework entirely formed by Ge-atoms. Below $T_c=5.35$ K, and 5.10 K for $\rm BaPt_4Ge_{12}$ and $\rm SrPt_4Ge_{12}$, respectively, electron-phonon coupled superconductivity emerges, ascribed to intrinsic features of the Pt-Ge framework, where Ge-$p$ states dominate the electronic structure at the Fermi energy.

Nonlinear acousto-electric transport in a two-dimensional electron system

We study both theoretically and experimentally the nonlinear interaction between an intense surface acoustic wave and a two-dimensional electron plasma in semiconductor-piezocrystal hybrid structures. The experiments on hybrid systems exhibit strongly nonlinear acousto-electric effects. The plasma turns into moving electron stripes, the acousto-electric current reaches its maximum, and the sound absorption strongly decreases. To describe the nonlinear phenomena, we develop a coupled-amplitude method for a two-dimensional system in the strongly nonlinear regime of interaction. At low electron densities the absorption coefficient decreases with increasing sound intensity, whereas at high electron density the absorption coefficient is not a monotonous function of the sound intensity. High-harmonic generation coefficients as a function of the sound intensity have a nontrivial behavior. Theory and experiment are found to be in a good agreement.

Measurement of spin-dependent total cross-section difference $Δσ_T$ in neutron-proton scattering at 16 MeV

A new measurement of $Δσ_T$ for polarized neutrons transmitted through a polarized proton target at 16.2 MeV has been made. A polarized neutron beam was obtained from the $^{3}\rm{H}(d,\vec n)^{4}\rm{He}$ reaction; proton polarization over 90\% was achieved in a frozen spin target of 20 cm$^3$ volume. The measurement yielded the value $Δσ_T=(-126\pm21\pm14)$ mb. The result of a simple phase shift analysis for the $^3S_1-^3D_1$ mixing parameter $ε_1$ is presented and compared with the theoretical potential model predictions.
