Bound on 3+1 active-sterile neutrino mixing from the first four-week science run of KATRIN

We report on the light sterile neutrino search from the first four-week science run of the KATRIN experiment in~2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter down to 40 eV below the endpoint at 18.57 keV. We consider the framework with three active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino of mass $m_{4}$. The analysis is sensitive to a fourth mass state $m^2_{4} \lesssim$ 1000 eV$^2$ and to active-to-sterile neutrino mixing down to $|U_{e4}|^2 \gtrsim 2\cdot10^{-2}$. No significant spectral distortion is observed and exclusion bounds on the sterile mass and mixing are reported. These new limits supersede the Mainz results and improve the Troitsk bound for $m^2_{4} <$ 30 eV$^2$. The reactor and gallium anomalies are constrained for $ 100 < Δ{m}^2_{41} < 1000$ eV$^2$.

Long term stability of the energy of conversion electrons emitted from solid 83Rb/83mKr source

The mono-energetic conversion electrons from the decay of 83mKr represent a unique tool for the energy calibration, energy scale monitoring and systematic studies of the tritium beta spectrum measurement in the neutrino mass experiment KATRIN. For this reason, the long term stability of energy of the 7.5 keV and 17.8 keV conversion electrons populated in the decay of solid 83Rb/83mKr vacuum evaporated sources was examined by means of two electron spectrometers.

Optimal distribution of measurement time in single channel measurements

Single channel measurements play a minor role in today physics, but they are sometimes unavoidable. Comparing to multichannel measurements, there is distribution of measurement time to be chosen in an experiment design. A method to optimize distribution of measurement time is given, where optimal distribution minimizes standard deviation of a selected fit parameter. As an example, the method is applied to electron spectroscopy experiments.

Conversion electrons used to monitor the energy scale of electron spectrometer near tritium endpoint - a simulation study

Measurements of the endpoint region of the tritium beta-decay spectrum provides good possibility to determine neutrino mass. This, however, needs a perfect monitoring of the spectrometer energy scale. A parallel measurement of electron line of known energy - in particular the 83mKr conversion K-line - may serve well to this purpose. The 83Rb decaying to 83mKr seems to be a very suitable radioactive source due to its halflife of 86.2 day. In this work, we determine the amount of 83Rb which is necessary for a successful monitoring.

Test of potential homogeneity in the KATRIN gaseous tritium source

83mKr is supposed to be used to study the properties of the windowless gaseous tritium source of the experiment KATRIN. In this work we deduce the amount of 83mKr which is necessary to determine possible potential inhomogeneities via conversion-electron-line broadening.

Internal conversion coefficients for superheavy elements

The internal conversion coefficients (ICC) were calculated for all atomic subshells of the elements with 104<=Z<=126, the E1...E4, M1...M4 multipolarities and the transition energies between 10 and 1000 keV. The atomic screening was treated in the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Slater model. The Tables comprising almost 90000 subshell and total ICC were recently deposited at LANL preprint server.

A possible origin of the endpoint anomaly in tritium beta-spectrum

The influence of the residual T atoms appearing after the decay of T_2 molecule on the beta-spectrum shape is considered. Recent experiments performed in Mainz, Troitsk, and Livermore are briefly reviewed from this viewpoint. Aspects connected with the possible time dependent change of the tritium source composition are discussed.
