Physical properties of trans-Neptunian object (143707) 2003 UY117 derived from stellar occultation and photometric observations

Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) are considered to be among the most primitive objects in our Solar System. Knowledge of their primary physical properties is essential for understanding their origin and the evolution of the outer Solar System. We predicted a stellar occultation by this TNO for 2020 October 23 UT and ran a specific campaign to investigate this event. We derived the projected profile shape and size from the occultation observations by means of an elliptical fit to the occultation chords. We also performed photometric observations of (143707) 2003 UY117 to obtain the absolute magnitude and the rotational period from the observed rotational light curve. Finally, we combined these results to derive the three-dimensional shape, volume-equivalent diameter, and geometric albedo for this TNO. From the stellar occultation, we obtained a projected ellipse with axes of $(282 \pm 18) \times (184 \pm 32)$ km. The area-equivalent diameter for this ellipse is $D_\textrm{eq,A} = 228 \pm 21$ km. From our photometric $R$ band observations, we derived an absolute magnitude of $H_V = 5.97 \pm 0.07$ mag using $V-R = 0.46 \pm 0.07$ mag, which was derived from a $V$ band subset of these data. The rotational light curve has a peak-to-valley amplitude of $Δm = 0.36 \pm 0.13$ mag. We find the most likely rotation period to be $P = 12.376 \pm 0.0033$ hours. By combining the occultation with the rotational light curve results and assuming a triaxial ellipsoid, we derived axes of $a \times b \times c = (332 \pm 24)$ km $\times$ $(216 \pm 24)$ km $\times$ $(180\substack{+28\\-24})$ km for this ellipsoid, and therefore a volume-equivalent diameter of $D_\textrm{eq,V} = 235 \pm 25$ km. Finally, the values for the absolute magnitude and for the area-equivalent diameter yield a geometric albedo of $p_V = 0.139 \pm 0.027$.

Symmetry breaking in nonuniform noncommutative $λϕ^4$ theory at finite temperature

We consider the 2PI Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action at finite temperature for a noncommutative real scalar field theory in 4 dimensions, with noncommutativity among space and time variables. By means of a Rayleig-Ritz variation, we study the solutions of a stripe type nonuniform background, which depends on space and time, and hence on temperature. The analysis in the first approximation shows that such solutions appear in the planar limit, as already known, but also under normal noncommutativity, in an anisotropic region which has not been considered. Further we show that the transition from the uniform ordered phase to the non uniform one is first order.

Study of exclusive one-pion and one-eta production using hadron and dielectron channels in pp reactions at kinetic beam energies of 1.25 GeV and 2.2 GeV with HADES

We present measurements of exclusive π^{+,0} and η production in pp reactions at 1.25 GeV and 2.2 GeV beam kinetic energy in hadron and dielectron channels. In the case of π^+ and π^0, high-statistics invariant-mass and angular distributions are obtained within the HADES acceptance as well as acceptance corrected distributions, which are compared to a resonance model. The sensitivity of the data to the yield and production angular distribution of Δ(1232) and higher lying baryon resonances is shown, and an improved parameterization is proposed. The extracted cross sections are of special interest in the case of pp \to pp η, since controversial data exist at 2.0 GeV; we find σ=0.142 \pm 0.022 mb. Using the dielectron channels, the π^0 and η Dalitz decay signals are reconstructed with yields fully consistent with the hadronic channels. The electron invariant masses and acceptance corrected helicity angle distributions are found in good agreement with model predictions.

Inclusive dielectron production in proton-proton collisions at 2.2 GeV beam energy

Data on inclusive dielectron production are presented for the reaction p+p at 2.2 GeV measured with the High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES). Our results supplement data obtained earlier in this bombarding energy regime by DLS and HADES. The comparison with the 2.09 GeV DLS data is discussed. The reconstructed e+e- distributions are confronted with simulated pair cocktails, revealing an excess yield at invariant masses around 0.5 GeV/c2. Inclusive cross sections of neutral pion and eta production are obtained.

Causality and Conjugate Points in General Plane Waves

Let $M = M_0 \times \R^2$ be a pp--wave type spacetime endowed with the metric $<\cdot,\cdot>_z = <\cdot,\cdot>_x + 2 du dv + H(x,u) du^2$, where $(M_0, <\cdot,\cdot>_x) $ is any Riemannian manifold and $H(x,u)$ an arbitrary function. We show that the behaviour of $H(x,u)$ at spatial infinity determines the causality of $M$, say: (a) if $-H(x,u)$ behaves subquadratically (i.e, essentially $-H(x,u) \leq R_1(u) |x|^{2-ε} $ for some $ε>0$ and large distance $|x|$ to a fixed point) and the spatial part $(M_0, <\cdot,\cdot>_x) $ is complete, then the spacetime $M$ is globally hyperbolic, (b) if $-H(x,u)$ grows at most quadratically (i.e, $-H(x,u) \leq R_1(u) |x|^{2}$ for large $|x|$) then it is strongly causal and (c) $M$ is always causal, but there are non-distinguishing examples (and thus, non-strongly causal), even when $-H(x,u) \leq R_1(u) |x|^{2+ε} $, for small $ε>0$. Therefore, the classical model $M_0 = \R^2$, $H(x,u) = \sum_{i,j} h_{ij}(u) x_i x_j (\not\equiv 0)$, which is known to be strongly causal but not globally hyperbolic, lies in the critical quadratic situation with complete $M_0$. This must be taken into account for realistic applications. In fact, we argue that $-H$ will be subquadratic (and the spacetime globally hyperbolic) if $M$ is asymptotically flat. The relation of these results with the notion of astigmatic conjugacy and the existence of conjugate points is also discussed.
