Experimental proof of a structural origin for the shadow Fermi surface in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

By combining surprising new results from a full polarization analysis of nodal angle-resolved photoemission data from pristine and modulation-free Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ with structural information from LEED and {\it ab initio} one-step photoemission simulations, we prove that the shadow Fermi surface in these systems has structural origin, being due to orthorhombic distortions from tetragonal symmetry present in both surface and bulk. Consequently, one of the longest standing open issues in the fermiology of these widely studied systems finally meets its resolution.

Origin of the shadow Fermi surface in Bi-based cuprates

We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the shadow Fermi surface in one layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta and two layer (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. We find the shadow band to have the same peakwidth and dispersion as the main band. In addition, the shadow band/main band intensity ratio is found to be binding energy independent. Consequently, it is concluded that the shadow bands in Bi-based HTSC do not originate from antiferromagnetic interactions but have a structural origin.

Circular dichroism and bilayer splitting in the normal state of underdoped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$(Ca$_x$Y$_{1-x}$)Cu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ and overdoped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

We report an ARPES investigation of the circular dichroism in the first Brillouin zone (BZ) of under- and overdoped Pb-Bi2212 samples. We show that the dichroism has opposite signs for bonding and antibonding components of the bilayer-split CuO-band and is antisymmetric with respect to reflections in both mirror planes parallel to the c-axis. Using this property of the energy and momentum intensity distributions we prove the existence of the bilayer splitting in the normal state of the underdoped compound and compare its value with the splitting in overdoped sample. In agreement with previous studies the magnitude of the interlayer coupling does not depend significantly on doping. We also discuss possible origins of the observed dichroism.

What the resonance peak does

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission with variable excitation energies is used to disentangle bilayer splitting effects and intrinsic (self-energy) effects in the electronic spectral function near the ($π$,0)-point of differently doped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. In contrast to overdoped samples, where intrinsic effects at the ($π$,0)point are virtually absent, we find in underdoped samples \textit{intrinsic} effects in the superconducting-state ($π$,0) spectra of the antibonding band. This intrinsic effect is present only below the critical temperature and weakens considerably with doping. Our results give strong support for models which involve a strong coupling of electronic excitations with the resonance mode seen in inelastic neutron scattering experiments.

Superconducting gap in the presence of bilayer splitting in underdoped Bi(Pb)2212

The clearly resolved bilayer splitting in ARPES spectra of the underdoped Pb-Bi2212 compound rises the question of how the bonding and antibonding sheets of the Fermi surface are gapped in the superconducting state. Here we compare the superconducting gaps for both split components and show that within the experimental uncertainties they are identical. By tuning the relative intensity of the bonding and antibonding bands using different excitation conditions we determine the precise {\bf k}-dependence of the leading edge gap. Significant deviations from the simple cos($k_{x}$)-cos($k_{y}$) gap function for the studied doping level are detected.

Detailed analysis of the mean diameter and diameter distribution of single wall carbon nanotubes from their optical response

We report a detailed analysis of the optical properties of single wall carbon nanotubes with different mean diameters as produced by laser ablation. From a combined study of optical absorption, high resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission and tight binding calculations we were able to accurately determine the mean diameter and diameter distribution in bulk SWCNT samples. In general, the absorption response can be well described assuming a Gaussian distribution of nanotube diameters and the predicted inverse proportionality between the nanotube diameter and the energy of the absorption features. A detailed simulation enabled not only a determination of the mean diameter of the nanotubes, but also gives insight into the chirality distribution of the nanotubes. The best agreement between the simulation and experiment is observed when only nanotubes within 15$^\circ$ of the armchair axis are considered. The mean diameters and diameter distributions from the optical simulations are in very good agreement with the values derived from other bulk sensitive methods such as electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering.

Origin of the peak-dip-hump structure in the photoemission spectra of Bi2212

The famous peak-dip-hump lineshape of the (π,0) photoemission spectrum of the bilayer Bi HTSC in the superconducting state is shown to be a superposition of spectral features originating from different electronic states which reside at different binding energies, but are each describable by essentially identical single-particle spectral functions. The 'superconducting' peak is due to the antibonding Cu-O-related band, while the hump is mainly formed by its bonding counterpart, with a c-axis bilayer coupling induced splitting of about 140 meV.

Ce-L3-XAS study of the temperature dependence of the 4f occupancy in the Kondo system Ce2Rh3Al9

We have used temperature dependent x-ray absorption at the Ce-L3 edge to investigate the recently discovered Kondo compound Ce2Rh3Al9. The systematic changes of the spectral lineshape with decreasing temperature are analyzed and found to be related to a change in the $4f$ occupation number, n_f, as the system undergoes a transition into a Kondo state. The temperature dependence of $n_f$ indicates a characteristic temperature of 150K, which is clearly related with the high temperature anomaly observed in the magnetic susceptibility of the same system. The further anomaly observed in the resistivity of this system at low temperature (ca. 20K) has no effect on n_f and is thus not of Kondo origin.

The distribution of the doped holes in La2-xSrxCu1-yRuyO4-(delta)

We present a systematic study of the perovskite-related system La2-xSrxCu1-yRuyO4 using Cu-L2,3, Ru-L2,3, and O-K x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). This system can be regarded as a solid solution of the two superconductors La2-xSrxCuO4 and Sr2RuO4, and thus the question as to the destination of the holes induced by Sr doping is central to our understanding of these novel systems. The comparison of the experimental data with state-of-the-art crystal-field-multiplet calculations shows clearly that the charge balance for x/2y >1 is predominantly achieved by an increase of the Ru valence from Ru(IV) to Ru(V), while Cu remains in the Cu(II) oxidation state.

Localisation of doped holes in edge-shared CuO_2 chain cuprates: consequences for dynamic spectral weight transfer

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of the electronic structure of the cuprate chain systems A_(1-x)CuO_2 (A=Ca,Sr,Ba), as measured using O-K and Cu-L_3 x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The doping-dependent behaviour in these systems is radically different to that in conventional 2D cuprate networks formed from corner sharing CuO_4 plaquettes, and follows from the strongly suppressed inter-plaquette hybridisation resulting from the 90 degree Cu-O-Cu interaction pathway in the chain systems. Spectroscopically, this results in (a) a classical mixed-valent scenario whereby the different final states in the Cu-L_3 spectra can be used directly to 'read-off' the Cu valency and (b) a drastic reduction in the dynamic spectral weight transfer from the upper Hubbard band to the low energy scale in the O-K spectra. The final picture emerges of localisation of the doped holes, with the chain then comprised of a mixture of pure Cu(II)O_4 and Cu(III)O_4 plaquettes.

The electronic structure of the doped one-dimensional transition metal oxide Y1-xCaxBaNiO5 studied using x-ray absorption

A strong anisotropic distribution of the holes in Ni 3d and O 2p orbitals is observed in the polarization dependent O1s and Ni2p3/2 x-ray absorption spectroscopy of the linear-chain nickelate Y1-xCaxBaNiO5 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2), which demonstrates the one-dimensional nature of the electronic state in these compounds. Furthermore, the additional holes introduced by Ca-doping occupy both O 2p and Ni 3d orbitals along the NiO5 chains. By comparing the experimental Ni 2p3/2 absorption spectra of Y1-xCaxBaNiO5 to those from charge transfer multiplet calculations we can derive the orbital character of the additional holes to be of ca. 60% O2p and ca. 40% Ni 3d.

Estimation of matrix element effects and determination of the Fermi surface in BSCCO systems using angle-scanned photoemission spectroscopy

The strong dependence of the momentum distribution of the photoelectrons on experimental conditions raises the question as to whether angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is able to provide an accurate reflection of the Fermi surface in Bi-based cuprate superconductors. In this paper we experimentally prove that the main contribution to the intensity variation comes from matrix elements effects and develop an approach to overcome this problem. We introduce a concept of 'self-normalization' which makes the spectra essentially independent of both the matrix elements and particular experimental parameters. On the basis of this concept we suggest a simple and precise method of Fermi surface determination in quasi-2D systems.

Surprises in the doping dependence of the Fermi surface in Bi(Pb)-2212

A detailed and systematic ARPES investigation of the doping-dependence of the normal state Fermi surface (FS) of modulation-free (Pb,Bi)-2212 is presented. The FS does not change in topology away from hole-like at any stage. The data reveal, in addition, a number of surprises. Firstly the FS area does not follow the usual curve describing Tc vs x for the hole doped cuprates, but is down-shifted in doping by ca. 0.05 holes per Cu site, indicating either the break-down of Luttinger's theorem or the consequences of a significant bi-layer splitting of the FS. Secondly, the strong k-dependence of the FS width is shown to be doping independent. Finally, the relative strength of the shadow FS has a doping dependence mirroring that of Tc.

One-dimensional dynamics of the d-electrons in $α'$-NaV$_{2}$O$_{5}$

We have studied the electronic properties of the ladder compound $α'$-NaV$_{2}$O$_{5}$, adopting a joint experimental and theoretical approach. The momentum-dependent loss function was measured using electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission. The optical conductivity derived from the loss function by a Kramers-Kronig analysis agrees well with our results from LSDA+U band-structure calculations upon application of an antiferromagnetic alignment of the V~3$d_{xy}$ spins along the legs and an on-site Coulomb interaction U of between 2 and 3 eV. The decomposition of the calculated optical conductivity into contributions from transitions between selected energy regions of the DOS reveals the origin of the observed anisotropy of the optical conductivity. In addition, we have investigated the plasmon excitations related to transitions between the vanadium states within an effective 16 site vanadium cluster model. Good agreement between the theoretical and experimental loss function was obtained using the hopping parameters derived from the tight binding fit to the band-structure and moderate Coulomb interactions between the electrons within the ab plane.

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 - a revisit

We have investigated the lowest binding-energy electronic structure of the model cuprate Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our data from about 80 cleavages of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 single crystals give a comprehensive, self-consistent picture of the nature of the first electron-removal state in this model undoped CuO_2-plane cuprate. Firstly, we show a strong dependence on the polarization of the excitation light which is understandable in the context of the matrix element governing the photoemission process, which gives a state with the symmetry of a Zhang-Rice singlet. Secondly, the strong, oscillatory dependence of the intensity of the Zhang-Rice singlet on the exciting photon-energy is shown to be consistent with interference effects connected with the periodicity of the crystal structure in the crystallographic c-direction. Thirdly, we measured the dispersion of the first electron-removal states along G->(pi,pi) and G->(pi,0), the latter being controversial in the literature, and have shown that the data are best fitted using an extended t-J-model, and extract the relevant model parameters. An analysis of the spectral weight of the first ionization states for different excitation energies within the approach used by Leung et al. (Phys. Rev. B56, 6320 (1997)) results in a strongly photon-energy dependent ratio between the coherent and incoherent spectral weight. The possible reasons for this observation and its physical implications are discussed.

Hole distribution for (Sr,Ca,Y,La)_14 Cu_24 O_41 ladder compounds studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The unoccupied electronic structure for the Sr_14Cu_24O_41 family of two-leg ladder compounds was investigated for different partial substitutions of Sr^2+ by Ca^2+, leaving the nominal hole count constant, and by Y^3+ or La^3+, reducing the nominal hole count from its full value of 6 per formula unit. Using polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy on single crystals, hole states on both the chain and ladder sites could be studied. While for intermediate hole counts all holes reside on O sites of the chains, a partial hole occupation on the ladder sites in orbitals oriented along the legs is observed for the fully doped compound Sr_14Cu_24O_41. On substitution of Ca for Sr orbitals within the ladder planes but perpendicular to the legs receive some hole occupation as well.

The dynamics of a hole in a CuO_4 plaquette: electron energy-loss spectroscopy of Li_2CuO_2

We have measured the energy and momentum dependent loss function of Li_2CuO_2 single crystals by means of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission. Using the same values for the model parameters, the low-energy features of the spectrum as well as published Cu 2p_(3/2) x-ray photoemission data of Li_2CuO_2 are well described by a cluster model that consists of a single CuO_4 plaquette only. This demonstrates that charge excitations in Li_2CuO_2 are strongly localized.

The normal state Fermi surface of pristine and Pb-doped Bi2212 from ARPES measurements and its photon energy independence

We address the question as to whether the topology of the normal state Fermi surface of Bi2212 - as seen in angle resolved photoemission - depends on the photon energy used to measure it. High resolution photoemission spectra and Fermi surface maps from pristine and Pb-doped Bi2212 are presented, recorded using both polarised and unpolarised radiation of differing energies. The data show clearly that no main band crosses the Fermi surface along the GMZ direction in reciprocal space, even for a photon energy of 32 eV, thus ruling out the existence of a G-centred, electron-like Fermi surface in this archetypal high Tc superconductor. The true topology of the normal state Fermi surface remains that of hole-like barrels centred at the X,Y points of the Brillouin zone.
