Resonances and the thermonuclear reaction rate

We present an approximate analytic expression for thermonuclear reaction rate of charged particles when the cross section contains a single narrow or wide resonance described by a Breit-Wigner shape. The resulting expression is uniformly valid as the effective energy and resonance energy coalesce. We use our expressions to calculate the reaction rate for $^{12}$C(p,$γ$)$^{13}$N.

Interplay of static and dynamic effects in 6He+ 238U Fusion

We investigate the influence of the neutron halo and the breakup channel in 6He + 238U fusion at near-barrier energies. To include static effects of the 2n-halo in 6He nuclei, we use a single-folding potential obtained from an appropriate nucleon-238U interaction and a realistic 6He density. Dynamical effects arising from the breakup process are then included through coupled-channel calculations. These calculations suggest that static effects dominate the cross section at energies above the Coulomb barrier, while the sub-barrier fusion cross section appears to be determined by coupling to the breakup channel. This last conclusion is uncertain due to the procedure employed to measure the fusion cross-section.

Role of virtual break-up of projectile in astrophysical fusion reactions

We study the effect of virtual Coulomb break-up, commonly known as the dipole polarizability, of the deuteron projectile on the astrophysical fusion reaction 3He(d,p)4He. We use the adiabatic approximation to estimate the potential shift due to the E1 transition to the continuum states in the deuteron, and compute the barrier penetrability in the WKB approximation. We find that the enhancement of the penetrability due to the deuteron break-up is too small to resolve the longstanding puzzle observed in laboratory measurements that the electron screening effect is surprisingly larger than theoretical prediction based on an atomic physics model. The effect of the 3He break-up in the 3He(d,p)4He reaction, as well as the 7Li break-up in the 7Li(p,alpha)4He reaction is also discussed.

Fusion and Breakup of Halo Nuclei

We discuss the effect of the coupling to the break-up channel on the total fusion involving a halo nucleus with a heavy target. We show that there is a competition between the hindrance arising from this coupling, mostly at above barrier energies, and the enhancement which ensues at sub-barrier energies owing to the static effect of the extended matter distribution and the coupling to the soft modes.

Coulomb excitation of 11Be reexamined

The study of Coulomb excitation of 11Be to the first excited state in intermediate energy collisions with heavy targets is presented. The existing experimental data are reanalised by including the probability of projectile survival into the calculation of Coulomb excitation cross sections. The survival probabilities are calculated using a recently developed global optical model potential tailored in line with the double folding model. The extracted B(E1) values for the transition 1/2+ --> 1/2- in 11Be are found to be slightly larger than those obtained so far using the b_0-recipe in Coulomb excitation theory.

$p+^{4,6,8}He elastic scattering at intermediate energies

Using a relativistic nuclear optical potential consisting of a Lorentz scalar, $V_{s}$, and the time-like component of a four-vector potential, $V_{0}$, we calculate elastic scattering differential cross sections and polarizations for $p+^{4}$He at intermediate energies for which experimental data are available. We also calculate the differential cross sections and analyzing powers for $p+^{6,8}$He at intermediate energies and compare with the few available experimental data.

A parameter-free optical potential for the heavy-ion elastic scattering proces

Thirty elastic scattering angular distributions for seven heavy-ion systems, in wide energy ranges, have been studied with the aim of systematizing the optical potential, real and imaginary parts, in a global way. The framework is: i) an extensive systematization of nuclear densities, ii) the energy dependence of the bare potential accounted by a model based on the nonlocal nature of the interaction, and iii) the real and imaginary parts of the optical potential assumed to have the same radial shape.

Energy averages and fluctuations in the decay out of superdeformed bands

We derive analytic formulae for the energy average (including the energy average of the fluctuation contribution) and variance of the intraband decay intensity of a superdeformed band. Our results may be expressed in terms of three dimensionless variables: $Γ^{\downarrow}/Γ_S$, $Γ_N/d$, and $Γ_N/(Γ_S+Γ^{\downarrow})$. Here $Γ^{\downarrow}$ is the spreading width for the mixing of a superdeformed (SD) state $|0>$ with the normally deformed (ND) states $|Q>$ whose spin is the same as $|0>$'s. The $|Q>$ have mean level spacing $d$ and mean electromagnetic decay width $Γ_N$ whilst $|0>$ has electromagnetic decay width $Γ_S$. The average decay intensity may be expressed solely in terms of the variables $Γ^{\downarrow}/Γ_S$ and $Γ_N/d$ or, analogously to statistical nuclear reaction theory, in terms of the transmission coefficients $T_0(E)$ and $T_N$ describing transmission from the $|Q>$ to the SD band via $|0\angle$ and to lower ND states. The variance of the decay intensity, in analogy with Ericson's theory of cross section fluctuations depends on an additional variable, the correlation length $Γ_N/(Γ_S+Γ^{\downarrow})=\frac{d}{2π}T_N/(Γ_S+Γ^{\d ownarrow})$. This suggests that analysis of an experimentally obtained variance could yield the mean level spacing $d$ as does analysis of the cross section autocorrelation function in compound nuclear reactions. We compare our results with those of Gu and Weidenmüller.

Rotating ground states of trapped Bose atoms with arbitrary two-body interactions

In a k-dimensional system of weakly interacting Bose atoms trapped by a spherically symmetric and harmonic external potential, an exact expression is obtained for the rotating ground states at a fixed angular momentum. The result is valid for arbitrary interactions obeying minimal physical requirements. Depending on the sign of a modified scattering length, it reduces to either a collective rotation or a condensed vortex state, with no alternative. The ground state can undergo a kind of quantum phase transition when the shape of the interaction potential is smoothly varied.

On "Do the attractive bosons condense?" by N. K. Wilkin, J. M. F. Gunn, R. A. Smith

Using Perron-Frobenius theorem, we prove that the results by Wilkin, Gunn and Smith [1] for the ground states of N Bose atoms rotating at the angular momentum L in a harmonic atomic trap with frequency omega interacting via attractive delta^2(r) forces, are valid for a broad class of predominantly attractive interactions V(r), not necessarily attractive for any r. The sufficient condition for the interaction is that all the two-body matrix elements allowed by the conservation of angular momentum k+l = m+n, are negative. This class includes, in particular, the Gaussian attraction of arbitrary radius, -1/r - Coulomb and log(r)-Coulomb forces, as well as all the short-range R << omega^{-1/2} interactions satisfying inequality int d^2r V(r) < 0. There is no condensation at L>> 1, and the angular momentum is concentrated in the collective ``center-of-mass'' mode.

Condensed vortex ground states of rotating Bose-Einstein condensate in harmonic atomic trap

We study a system of $N$ Bose atoms trapped by a symmetric harmonic potential, interacting via weak central forces. Considering the ground state of the rotating system as a function of the two conserved quantities, the total angular momentum and its collective component, we develop an algebraic approach to derive exact wave functions and energies of these ground states. We describe a broad class of the interactions for which these results are valid. This universality class is defined by simple integral condition on the potential. Most of the potentials of practical interest which have pronounced repulsive component belong to this universality class.

Matrix Elements of Random Operators and Discrete Symmetry Breaking in Nuclei

It is shown that several effects are responsible for deviations of the intensity distributions from the Porter-Thomas law. Among these are genuine symmetry breaking, such as isospin; the nature of the transition operator; truncation of the Hilbert space in shell model calculations and missing transitions

Quasi Free 238U (e,e'f)-Cross Section in Macroscopic-Microscopic Approach

We present the result of a theoretical study of inclusive quasi free electrofission of $^{238}$U. The off-shell $ $cross sections for the quasi free reaction stage have been calculated within the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation (PWIA), using a Macroscopic -Microscopic description of the proton and neutron single particle momentum distributions. Electron wave function distortion corrections were included using the effective momentum approximation, and the Final State Interaction (FSI) effects were calculated using an optical potential. The fissility for the proton single hole excited states of the residual nucleus $^{237}$Pa was calculated both without and with contributions of the pre-equilibrium emission of the particles. The fissility for $^{237,238}U$ residual nuclei was calculated within the compound nucleus model. The $(e,e^{\prime}f)-$cross sections thus obtained were compared with available experimental data.

Quasi free electro fission of 238U

We present the result of a theoretical study of the quasi free electrofission of $^{238}$U. The exclusive differential cross sections for the quasi free scattering reaction stage have been calculated in PWIA, using a Macroscopic-Microscopic approach for the description of the proton bound states. The nuclear shape was parametrized in terms of cassinian ovaloids. The equilibrium deformation parameters have been calculated by minimizing the total nuclear energy. In the calculation the axially deformed Woods-Saxon single particle potential was used. The obtained single particle momentum distributions were averaged over the nuclear symmetry axis direction. The occupation numbers were calculated in the BCS approach. The fissility for the single hole excited states of the residual nucleus $^{237}$% Pa was calculated on the statistical theory grounds both without taking into account the pre-equilibrium emission of the particle, and with preequilibrium emission in the framework of the exciton model.

Excitation of Triple Giant Resonances in Heavy-Ion Reactions

We calculate the cross-section for the excitation and subsequent decay of triple giant resonances(TGDR) in several nuclei excited with heavy ions. The recently developed coherent plus incoherent theory for excitation in conjunction with the hybrid decay model of Dias-Hussein-Adhikari are used for the purpose. It is emphasized that the direct decay of TGDR is expected to deviate appreciably from the harmonic limit especially at low bombarding energies, owing to the incoherent contribution.

Anharmonicities of giant dipole excitations

The role of anharmonic effects on the excitation of the double giant dipole resonance is investigated in a simple macroscopic model.Perturbation theory is used to find energies and wave functions of the anharmonic ascillator. The cross sections for the electromagnetic excitation of the one- and two-phonon giant dipole resonances in energetic heavy-ion collisions are then evaluated through a semiclassical coupled-channel calculation. It is argued that the variations of the strength of the anharmonic potential should be combined with appropriate changes in the oscillator frequency,in order to keep the giant dipole resonance energy consistent with the experimental value. When this is taken into account, the effects of anharmonicities on the double giant dipole resonance excitation probabilities are small and cannot account for the well-known discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Equilibrium and stability properties of a coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

The equilibrium and stability properties of a coupled two-component BEC is studied using a variational method and the one-dimensional model of Williams and collaborators. The variational parameters are the population fraction, translation and scaling transformation of the condensate densities, assumed to have a Gaussian shape. We study the equilibrium and stability properties as a function of the strength of the laser field and the traps displacement. We find many branches of equilibrium configurations, with a host of critical points. In all cases, the signature of the onset of criticality is the collapse of a normal mode which is a linear combination of the out of phase translation and an in phase breathing oscillation of the condensate densities. Our calculations also indicate that we have symmetry breaking effects when the traps are not displaced
