Two superconducting states with broken time-reversal symmetry in FeSe1-xSx

Iron-chalcogenide superconductors FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ possess unique electronic properties such as non-magnetic nematic order and its quantum critical point. The nature of superconductivity with such nematicity is important for understanding the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. A recent theory suggested the possible emergence of a fundamentally new class of superconductivity with the so-called Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces (BFSs) in this system. However, such an {\em ultranodal} pair state requires broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the superconducting state, which has not been observed experimentally. Here we report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ superconductors for $0\le x \le 0.22$ covering both orthorhombic (nematic) and tetragonal phases. We find that the zero-field muon relaxation rate is enhanced below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ for all compositions, indicating that the superconducting state breaks TRS both in the nematic and tetragonal phases. Moreover, the transverse-field $μ$SR measurements reveal that the superfluid density shows an unexpected and substantial reduction in the tetragonal phase ($x>0.17$). This implies that a significant fraction of electrons remain unpaired in the zero-temperature limit, which cannot be explained by the known unconventional superconducting states with point or line nodes. The time-reversal symmetry breaking and the suppressed superfluid density in the tetragonal phase, together with the reported enhanced zero-energy excitations, are consistent with the ultranodal pair state with BFSs. The present results reveal two different superconducting states with broken TRS separated by the nematic critical point in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, which calls for the theory of microscopic origins that account for the relation between the nematicity and superconductivity.

Pure nematic quantum critical point accompanied by a superconducting dome

When a symmetry-breaking phase of matter is suppressed to a quantum critical point (QCP) at absolute zero, quantum-mechanical fluctuations proliferate. Such fluctuations can lead to unconventional superconductivity, as evidenced by the superconducting domes often found near magnetic QCPs in correlated materials. However, it remains unclear whether this superconductivity mechanism holds for QCPs of the electronic nematic phase, characterized by rotational symmetry breaking. Here, we demonstrate from systematic elastoresistivity measurements that nonmagnetic FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ exhibits an electronic nematic QCP showing diverging nematic susceptibility. This finding establishes two nematic QCPs in FeSe-based superconductors with contrasting accompanying phase diagrams. In FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$, a superconducting dome is centered at the QCP, whereas FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ shows no QCP-associated enhancement of superconductivity. We find that this difference is related to the relative strength of nematic and spin fluctuations. Our results in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ present the first case in support of the superconducting dome being associated with the pure nematic QCP.

Enhanced superconducting pairing strength near a nonmagnetic nematic quantum critical point

The quest for high-temperature superconductivity at ambient pressure is a central issue in physics. In this regard, the relationship between unconventional superconductivity and the quantum critical point (QCP) associated with the suppression of some form of symmetry-breaking order to zero temperature has received particular attention. The key question is how the strength of the electron pairs changes near the QCP, and this can be verified by high-field experiments. However, such studies are limited mainly to superconductors with magnetic QCPs, and the possibility of unconventional mechanisms by which nonmagnetic QCP promotes strong pairing remains a nontrivial issue. Here, we report systematic measurements of the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ in nonmagnetic FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ superconductors, which exhibit a QCP of electronic nematicity characterized by spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking. As the magnetic field increases, the superconducting phase of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ shrinks to a narrower dome surrounding the nematic QCP. The analysis of $H_{\rm c2}$ reveals that the Pauli-limiting field is enhanced toward the QCP, implying that the pairing interaction is significantly strengthened via nematic fluctuations emanated from the QCP. Remarkably, this nonmagnetic nematic QCP is not accompanied by a divergent effective mass, distinct from the magnetically mediated pairing. Our observation opens up a nonmagnetic route to high-temperature superconductivity.

Investigation of alpha particle induced reactions on natural silver in the 40-50 MeV energy range

Natural silver targets have been irradiated by using a 50 MeV alpha-particle beam in order to measure the activation cross sections of radioisotopes in the 40-50 MeV energy range. Among the radio-products there are medically important isotopes such as $^{110m}$In and $^{111}$In. For optimizing the production of these radioisotopes and regarding their purity and specific activity the cross section data for every produced radioisotope are important. New data are measured in this energy range and the results of some previous measurements have been confirmed. Physical yield curves have been calculated by using the new cross section data completed with the results from the literature.

The Circumstellar Disk and Asymmetric outflow of the EX Lup Outburst System

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations at 0.3 arcsec-resolution of EX Lup, the prototype of the EXor class of outbursting pre-main sequence stars. The circumstellar disk of EX Lup is resolved for the first time in 1.3mm continuum emission and in the $J$=2--1 spectral line of three isotopologues of CO. At the spatial resolution and sensitivity achieved, the compact dust continuum disk shows no indications of clumps, fragments, or asymmetries above 5-sigma level. Radiative transfer modeling constrains the characteristic radius of the dust disk to 23 au and a total dust mass of 1.0$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_\odot$ (33 M_earth), similar to other EXor sources. The $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O line emission trace the disk rotation and are used to constrain the disk geometry, kinematics, and a total gas disk mass of 5.1$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_\odot$. The $^{12}$CO emission extends out to a radius of 200 au and is asymmetric, with one side deviating from Keplerian rotation. We detect blue-shifted, $^{12}$CO arc-like emission located 0.8 arcsec to the north-west, and spatially disconnected from the disk emission. We interpret this extended structure as the brightened walls of a cavity excavated by an outflow, which are more commonly seen in FUor sources. Such outflows have also been seen in the borderline FU/EXor object V1647 Ori, but not towards EXor objects. Our detection provides evidence that the outflow phenomenon persists into the EXor phase, suggesting that FUor and EXor objects are a continuous population in which outflow activity declines with age, with transitional objects such as EX Lup and V1647 Ori.

Variation of Solar Microwave Spectrum in the Last Half Century

The total solar fluxes at 1, 2, 3.75, and 9.4 GHz were observed continuously from 1957 to 1994 at Toyokawa, and from 1994 until now at Nobeyama, Japan with the current Nobeyama Radio Polarimeters. We examined the multi-frequency and long-term datasets, and found that not only the microwave solar flux but also its monthly standard deviation well indicates the long-term variation of solar activity. Furthermore, we found that the microwave spectra at the solar minima of Cycle 20~24 agree with each other. These results show that the average atmospheric structure above the upper chromosphere in the quiet Sun has not varied for half a century, and suggest that the energy input for atmospheric heating from the sub-photosphere to the corona has not changed in the quiet Sun despite significantly differing strengths of magnetic activity in the last five solar cycles.

Excitation function of the alpha particle induced nuclear reactions on enriched $^{116}$Cd, production of the theranostic isotope $^{117m}$Sn

$^{117m}$Sn is one of the radioisotopes can be beneficially produced through alpha particle irradiation. The targets were prepared by deposition of $^{116}$Cd metal onto high purity 12 $μ$m thick Cu backing. The average deposited thickness was 21.9 $μ$m. The beam energy was thoroughly measured by Time of Flight (TOF) methods and proved to be 51.2 MeV. For the experiment the well-established stacked foil technique was used. In addition to the Cd targets, Ti foils were also inserted into the stacks for energy and intensity monitoring. The Cu backings were also used for monitoring and as recoil catcher of the reaction products from the cadmium layer. The activities of the irradiated foils were measured with HPGe detector for gamma-ray spectrometry and cross section values were determined. As a result excitation functions for the formation of $^{117m}$Sn, $^{117m,g}$In, $^{116m}$In, $^{115m}$In and $^{115m,g}$Cd from enriched $^{116}$Cd were deduced and compared with the available literature data and with the results of the nuclear reaction model code calculations EMPIRE 3.2 and TALYS 1.8. Yield curves were also deduced for the measured nuclear reactions and compared with the literature.

Quandle coloring and cocycle invariants of composite knots and abelian extensions

Quandle colorings and cocycle invariants are studied for composite knots, and applied to chirality and abelian extensions. The square and granny knots, for example, can be distinguished by quandle colorings, so that a trefoil and its mirror can be distinguished by quandle invariants of composite knots. We investigate this and related phenomena. Quandle cocycle invariants are studied in relation to the connected sum, and formulas are given for computing the cocycle invariant from the number of colorings of composite knots. Relations to corresponding abelian extensions of quandles are studied, and extensions are examined for the table of small connected quandles, called Rig quandles. Computer calculations are presented, and summaries of outputs are discussed.

Catalog of dense cores in the Orion A giant molecular cloud

We present Orion A giant molecular cloud core catalogs, which are based on 1.1 mm map with an angular resolution of 36 arcsec (sim 0.07 pc) and C18O (1-0) data with an angular resolution of 26.4 arcsec (sim 0.05 pc). We have cataloged 619 dust cores in the 1.1 mm map using the Clumpfind method. The ranges of the radius, mass, and density of these cores are estimated to be 0.01 - 0.20 pc, 0.6 - 1.2 times 10^2 Msun, and 0.3 times 10^4 - 9.2 times 10^6 cm^{-3}, respectively. We have identified 235 cores from the C18O data. The ranges of the radius, velocity width, LTE mass, and density are 0.13 -- 0.34 pc, 0.31 - 1.31 km s^{-1}, 1.0 - 61.8 Msun, and (0.8 - 17.5) times 10^3 cm^{-3}, respectively. From the comparison of the spatial distributions between the dust and C18O cores, four types of spatial relations were revealed: (1) the peak positions of the dust and C18O cores agree with each other (32.4% of the C18O cores), (2) two or more C18O cores are distributed around the peak position of one dust core (10.8% of the C18O cores), (3) 56.8% of the C18O cores are not associated with any dust cores, and (4) 69.3% of the dust cores are not associated with any C18O cores. The data sets and analysis are public.

Visualization of ferroelectric domains in boracite using emission of terahertz radiation

We report on the emission of terahertz radiation by irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses in non-centrosymmetric paraelectric and ferroelectric phases of Co$_3$B$_7$O$_{13}$I boracite. The Generation of the terahertz waves in both phases is caused by optical rectification via a second-order nonlinear optical effect. In the ferroelectric phase, we successfully visualized ferroelectric domains by analyzing the polarization state of the terahertz wave radiated from the crystal. In a large area of the crystal ($\sim$ 500 $\times$ 500 $μ$m$^2$), the observed polarization vector of the radiated terahertz wave was tilted from directions of spontaneous polarization, i.e., [100]$_{\rm cub}$, [010]$_{\rm cub}$, and [001]$_{\rm cub}$ in cubic setting, which can be explained by the presence of a ferroelectric 90$^\circ$ domain wall of the (101)$_{\rm cub}$ plane.

Unveiling the gas and dust disk structure in HD 163296 using ALMA observations

Aims: The aim of this work is to study the structure of the protoplanetary disk surrounding the Herbig Ae star HD 163296. Methods: We have used high-resolution and high-sensitivity ALMA observations of the CO(3-2) emission line and the continuum at 850 microns, as well as the 3- dimensional radiative transfer code MCFOST to model the data presented in this work. Results: The CO(3-2) emission unveils for the first time at sub-millimeter frequencies the vertical structure details of a gaseous disk in Keplerian rotation, showing the back- and the front-side of a flared disk. Continuum emission at 850 microns reveals a compact dust disk with a 240 AU outer radius and a surface brightness profile that shows a very steep decline at radius larger than 125 AU. The gaseous disk is more than two times larger than the dust disk, with a similar critical radius but with a shallower radial profile. Radiative transfer models of the continuum data confirms the need for a sharp outer edge to the dust disk. The models for the CO(3-2) channel map require the disk to be slightly more geometrically thick than previous models suggested, and that the temperature at which CO gas becomes depleted (frozen-out) from the outer regions of the disk midplane is T < 20 K, in agreement with previous studies.

The Rotating Outflow, Envelope and Disk in Class-0/I protostar [BHB2007] 11 in the Pipe Nebula

We present the results of observations toward a low-mass Class-0/I protostar, [BHB2007]#11 (afterwards B59#11) at the nearby (d=130 pc) star forming region, Barnard 59 (B59) in the Pipe Nebula with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope (~22" resolution) in CO(3--2), HCO+, H13CO+(4--3), and 1.1 mm dust-continuum emissions. We also show Submillimeter Array (SMA) data in 12CO, 13CO, C18O(2--1), and 1.3 mm dust-continuum emissions with ~5" resolution. From ASTE CO(3--2) observations, we found that B59#11 is blowing a collimated outflow whose axis lies almost on the plane of the sky. The outflow traces well a cavity-like structure seen in the 1.1 mm dust-continuum emission. The results of SMA 13CO and C18O(2--1) observations have revealed that a compact and elongated structure of dense gas is associated with B59#11, which is oriented perpendicular to the outflow axis. There is a compact dust condensation with a size of 350x180 AU seen in the SMA 1.3 mm continuum map, and the direction of its major axis is almost the same as that of the dense gas elongation. The distributions of 13CO and C18O emission also show the velocity gradients along their major axes, which are considered to arise from the envelope/disk rotation. From the detailed analysis of the SMA data, we infer that B59#11 is surrounded by a Keplerian disk with a size of less than 350 AU. In addition, the SMA CO(2--1) image shows a velocity gradient in the outflow along the same direction as that of the dense gas rotation. We suggest that this velocity gradient shows a rotation of the outflow.

Giant Molecular Clouds and Star Formation in the Tidal Molecular Arm of NGC 4039

The properties of tidally induced arms provide a means to study molecular cloud formation and the subsequent star formation under environmental conditions which in principle are different from quasi stationary spiral arms. We report the properties of a newly discovered molecular gas arm of likely tidal origin at the south of NGC 4039 and the overlap region in the Antennae galaxies, with a resolution of 1"68 x 0"85, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array science verification CO(2-1) data. The arm extends 3.4 kpc (34") and is characterized by widths of ~ 200 pc (2") and velocity widths of typically \DeltaV ~ 10-20 km/s . About 10 clumps are strung out along this structure, most of them unresolved, with average surface densities of Σ_gas ~ 10-100 Msun pc^{-2}, and masses of (1-8) x 10^6 Msun. These structures resemble the morphology of beads on a string, with an almost equidistant separation between the beads of about 350 pc, which may represent a characteristic separation scale for giant molecular associations. We find that the star formation efficiency at a resolution of 6" (600 pc) is in general a factor of 10 higher than in disk galaxies and other tidal arms and bridges. This arm is linked, based on the distribution and kinematics, to the base of the western spiral arm of NGC 4039, but its morphology is different to that predicted by high-resolution simulations of the Antennae galaxies.

Ferrimagnetism and spontaneous ordering of transition-metals in La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films

We report on atomic ordering of B-site transition-metals and magnetic properties of epitaxial La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films grown by pulsed-laser deposition under various conditions. The highest ordered sample exhibited a fraction of antisite-disorder of only 0.05 and a saturation magnetization of ~2μ_{B} per formula unit at 5 K. The result is consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering of local spin moment (3d^{3}_{\downarrow}3d^{5}_{\uparrow}; S = -3/2+5/2 = 1). Therefore, the magnetic ground state of La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite that has been long debate is unambiguously revealed to be ferrimagnetic. Our results present a wide opportunity to explore novel magnetic properties of binary transition-metal perovskites upon epitaxial stabilization of the ordered phase.

Element-Specific Phonon Density of States of Iron in LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} and La_{1-x}Ca_{x}FePO

We have measured element-specific Fe-phonon densities of states (Fe-PDOS) of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} (x = 0, 0.11) and La_{1-x}Ca_{x}FePO (x = 0.13) by using nuclear resonant inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation. The Fe-PDOS of superconductor LaFeAsO_{0.89}F_{0.11} (Tc = 26 K) and that of non-superconductor LaFeAsO have similar structures to both below Tc (15 K) and above Tc (298 K) and, therefore, fluorine doping does not have notable effect on the Fe-PDOS. As for the superconductor La_{0.87}Ca_{0.13}FePO (Tc = 5.4K), the entire structure of Fe-PDOS resembles with that of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x}, but the energy of the highest peak is higher than that of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x}. These peaks are attributed to vibrational modes between Fe and pnicogen (As and P) and the temperature-dependent energy shifts are observed for LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x}. Observed Fe-PDOS of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} agrees well with an previously calculated Fe-PDOS spectrum with a first-principles calculation and shows the structural resemblance with an calculated Eliashberg function #alpha^2F(x) giving small electron-phonon coupling. Therefore, our results indicate that phonons are not the main contributors to the Tc superconductivity of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x}. From the experimental viewpoint, comparison of our observed Fe-PDOS and an experimentally obtained bosonic glue spectrum will be an important clue as to whether phonons are the main contributors to superconductivity in iron-pnictide superconductors.

Spin Ordering in LaOFeAs and Its Suppression in Superconductor LaO0.89F0.11FeAs Probed by Mössbauer Spectroscopy

The 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to an iron-based layered superconductor LaO0.89F0.11FeAs with a transition temperature of 26 K and its parent material LaOFeAs. Throughout the temperature range from 4.2 to 298 K, a singlet spectrum with no magnetic splitting was observed as a main component of each Mössbauer spectrum of the F-doped superconductor. No additional internal magnetic field was observed for the spectrum measured at 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 7 T. On the other hand, the parent LaOFeAs shows a magnetic transition at around 140 K, and this temperature is slightly lower than that of a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase, which accompanies the resistivity anomaly at around 150 K. The magnetic moment is estimated to be ~0.35 $μ$B/Fe at 4.2 K in the orthorhombic phase, and the spin disorder remains in the magnetic ordered state even at 4.2 K. The fact that no magnetic transition in LaO0.89F0.11FeAs was observed even at 4.2 K under 7 T implies a strong spin fluctuation above Tc or small magnetic moment in this system. Therefore, the present results show that the F-doping effectively suppresses the magnetic and structural transitions in the parent material and the suppression leads to emergence of superconductivity in this system.

Mid-Infrared Photometry and Spectra of Three High Mass Protostellar Candidates at IRAS 18151-1208 and IRAS 20343+4129

We present arcsecond-scale mid-ir photometry (in the 10.5 micron N band and at 24.8 microns), and low resolution spectra in the N band (R~100) of a candidate high mass protostellar object (HMPO) in IRAS 18151-1208 and of two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129, IRS 1 and IRS 3. In addition we present high resolution mid-ir spectra (R~80000) of the two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129. These data are fitted with simple models to estimate the masses of gas and dust associated with the mid-ir emitting clumps, the column densities of overlying absorbing dust and gas, the luminosities of the HMPO candidates, and the likely spectral type of the HMPO candidate for which [Ne II] 12.8 micron emission was detected (IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 3). We suggest that IRAS 18151-1208 is a pre-ultracompact HII region HMPO, IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 1 is an embedded young stellar object with the luminosity of a B3 star, and IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 3 is a B2 ZAMS star that has formed an ultracompact HII region and disrupted its natal envelope.
