Neutrino-nucleus cross-sections at supernova neutrino energies

The inclusive neutrino/antineutrino-induced charged and neutral current reaction cross-sections in $^{12}C$, $^{16}O$, $^{40}Ar$, $^{56}Fe$ and $^{208}Pb$ in the energy region of supernova neutrinos/antineutrinos are studied. The calculations are performed in the local density approximation (LDA) taking into account the effects due to Pauli blocking, Fermi motion and the renormalization of weak transition strengths in the nuclear medium. The effect of Coulomb distortion of the lepton produced in the charged current reactions has also been included. The numerical results for the energy dependence of the cross-section $σ(E)$ as well as the flux averaged cross-section and event rates for the charged lepton production in the case of some supernova neutrino/antineutrino fluxes recently discussed in the literature have been presented. We have also given the flux-averaged angular and energy distributions of the charged leptons corresponding to these fluxes.

Neutrino-nucleus cross sections in $^{12}C$ and $^{40}Ar$ with KDAR neutrinos

High intensity monoenergetic muon neutrinos of energy 236 MeV from kaon decay at rest (KDAR) at the medium energy proton accelerator facilities like J-PARC and Fermilab are proposed to be used for making precision measurements of neutrino-nucleus cross sections in $^{12}C$ and $^{40}Ar$ and perform neutrino oscillation experiments in $ν_μ\to ν_μ$ and $ν_μ\to ν_e$ modes. In view of these developments, we study the theoretical uncertainties arising due to the nuclear medium effects in the neutrino-nucleus cross sections as well as in the angular and energy distributions of the charged leptons produced in the charged current (CC) induced reactions by $ν_μ$ and $ν_e$ in $^{12}C$ and $^{40}Ar$ in the energy region of $E_{ν_e(ν_μ)}<$ 300 MeV. The calculations have been done in a microscopic model using the local density approximation which takes into account the nuclear effects due to the Fermi motion, binding energy and long range correlations. The results are compared with the other calculations available in the literature.

NuSTEC White Paper: Status and Challenges of Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering

The precise measurement of neutrino properties is among the highest priorities in fundamental particle physics, involving many experiments worldwide. Since the experiments rely on the interactions of neutrinos with bound nucleons inside atomic nuclei, the planned advances in the scope and precision of these experiments requires a commensurate effort in the understanding and modeling of the hadronic and nuclear physics of these interactions, which is incorporated as a nuclear model in neutrino event generators. This model is essential to every phase of experimental analyses and its theoretical uncertainties play an important role in interpreting every result. In this White Paper we discuss in detail the impact of neutrino-nucleus interactions, especially the nuclear effects, on the measurement of neutrino properties using the determination of oscillation parameters as a central example. After an Executive Summary and a concise Overview of the issues, we explain how the neutrino event generators work, what can be learned from electron-nucleus interactions and how each underlying physics process - from quasi-elastic to deep inelastic scattering - is understood today. We then emphasize how our understanding must improve to meet the demands of future experiments. With every topic we find that the challenges can be met only with the active support and collaboration among specialists in strong interactions and electroweak physics that include theorists and experimentalists from both the nuclear and high energy physics communities.

Nuclear dependence of $R=\frac{σ_L}{σ_T}$ and Callan-Gross relation in nuclei

The electromagnetic nuclear structure functions $F_{1A} (x,Q^2)$, $F_{2A} (x,Q^2)$ and $F_{LA} (x,Q^2)$ have been calculated using a microscopic model of nucleus to study the nuclear medium effects on the ratio $R_A(x,Q^2)=\frac{σ_{LA} (x,Q^2)}{σ_{TA} (x,Q^2)} = \frac{F_{LA} (x,Q^2)}{2xF_{1A} (x,Q^2)}$ and the Callan-Gross relation(CGR) in nuclei. The nuclear medium effects due to the Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contribution and shadowing have been taken into account. The theoretical results for the nuclear dependence of $R_{A} (x,Q^2)$ and its impact on CGR have been presented and compared with the available experimental data on the various nuclear targets. The predictions have been made for $R_{A} (x,Q^2)$ in the kinematic region of $x$ and $Q^2$ for some nuclei relevant for the future experiments to be performed at the JLab.

Physics Potential of the ICAL detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO)

The upcoming 50 kt magnetized iron calorimeter (ICAL) detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is designed to study the atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos separately over a wide range of energies and path lengths. The primary focus of this experiment is to explore the Earth matter effects by observing the energy and zenith angle dependence of the atmospheric neutrinos in the multi-GeV range. This study will be crucial to address some of the outstanding issues in neutrino oscillation physics, including the fundamental issue of neutrino mass hierarchy. In this document, we present the physics potential of the detector as obtained from realistic detector simulations. We describe the simulation framework, the neutrino interactions in the detector, and the expected response of the detector to particles traversing it. The ICAL detector can determine the energy and direction of the muons to a high precision, and in addition, its sensitivity to multi-GeV hadrons increases its physics reach substantially. Its charge identification capability, and hence its ability to distinguish neutrinos from antineutrinos, makes it an efficient detector for determining the neutrino mass hierarchy. In this report, we outline the analyses carried out for the determination of neutrino mass hierarchy and precision measurements of atmospheric neutrino mixing parameters at ICAL, and give the expected physics reach of the detector with 10 years of runtime. We also explore the potential of ICAL for probing new physics scenarios like CPT violation and the presence of magnetic monopoles.

Recent status of the understanding of neutrino-nucleus cross section

In this work we have presented current understanding of neutrino-nucleon/nucleus cross sections in the few GeV energy region relevant for a precise determination of neutrino oscillation parameters and CP violation in the leptonic sector. In this energy region various processes like quasielastic and inelastic production of single and multipion production, coherent pion production, kaon, eta, hyperon production, associated particle production as well as deep inelastic scattering processes contribute to the neutrino event rates.

Quasielastic production of polarized hyperons in antineutrino--nucleon reactions

We have studied the differential cross section as well as the longitudinal and perpendicular components of polarization of final hyperon($Λ$,$Σ$) produced in the antineutrino induced quasielastic charged current reactions on nucleon and nuclear targets. The nucleon-hyperon transition form factors are determined from the experimental data on quasielastic $(ΔS =0)$ charged current (anti)neutrino--nucleon scattering and the semileptonic decay of neutron and hyperons assuming G--invariance, T--invariance and SU(3) symmetry. The vector transition form factors are obtained in terms of nucleon electromagnetic form factors for which various parameterizations available in literature have been used. A dipole parameterization for the axial vector form factor and the pseudoscalar transition form factor derived in terms of axial vector form factor assuming PCAC and GT relation extended to strangeness sector have been used in numerical evaluations. The flux averaged cross section and polarization observables corresponding to CERN Gargamelle experiment have been calculated for quasielastic hyperon production and found to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental observations. The numerical results for the flux averaged differential cross section$\frac{dσ}{dQ^2}$ and longitudinal(perpendicular) polarization $P_L(Q^2)(P_P(Q^2))$ relevant for the antineutrino fluxes of MINER$ν$A, MicroBooNE, and T2K experiments have been presented. This will be useful in interpreting future experimental results on production cross sections and polarization observables from the experiments on the quasielastic production of hyperons induced by antineutrinos and explore the possibility of determining the axial vector and pseudoscalar form factors in the strangeness sector.

Weak Quasielastic Production of Hyperons

We present the results for antineutrino induced quasielastic hyperon production from nucleon and nuclear targets \cite{Alam:2014bya,Singh:2006xp}. The inputs are the nucleon-hyperon(N--Y) transition form factors determined from the analysis of neutrino-nucleon scattering and semileptonic decays of neutron and hyperons using SU(3) symmetry. The calculations for the nuclear targets are done in local density approximation. The nuclear medium effects(NME) like Fermi motion, Pauli blocking and final state interaction(FSI) effects due to hyperon-nucleon scattering have been taken into account. The hyperons giving rise to pions through weak decays also contribute to the weak pion production in addition to the $Δ$ excitation mechanism which dominates in the energy region of $<$ 0.7 GeV. We also present the results of longitudinal and perpendicular components of polarization of final hyperon \cite{Akbar:2016awk}. These measurements in the future accelerator experiments with antineutrinos may give some information on axial vector and pseudoscalar form factors in the strangeness sector.

Lepton production cross sections in quasielastic $ν/\barν-$A scattering

We present the results of (anti)neutrino induced CCQE cross sections from some nuclear targets in the energy region of $E_ν\le 1 GeV$. The aim of the study is to confront electron and muon production cross sections relevant for $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_e$ or $\barν_μ\leftrightarrow \barν_e$ oscillation experiments. The effects due to lepton mass and its kinematic implications, second class currents and uncertainties in the axial and pseudoscalar form factors are discussed for (anti)neutrino induced reaction cross sections on free nucleon as well as the nucleons bound in a nucleus where nuclear medium effects influence the cross section. The calculations have been performed using local Fermi gas model with nucleon correlation effects. The details are given in Ref.[1].

Medium effects in the deep-inelastic charged lepton/neutrino-A scattering

In this work, we have discussed the recent developments that have taken place to understand the differences in the weak $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and electromagnetic $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ nuclear structure functions. Also we present the results of our work on nuclear medium effects on $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ for a wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$. These results have been obtained using a microscopic nuclear model, where to incorporate nuclear medium effects, Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions from pion and rho mesons and shadowing effects are considered. The calculations are performed in local density approximation using relativistic nucleon spectral function. We have also compared the theoretical results with the recent experimental data on electromagnetic and weak structure functions. Furthermore, we have studied the nuclear medium effects in Drell-Yan(DY) process and present the results for differential cross section, and the results are compared with the data of E772 experiment.

Nuclear medium effects in $F_{2A}^{EM}(x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}^{Weak}(x,Q^2)$ structure functions

Recent phenomenological analysis of experimental data on DIS processes induced by charged leptons and neutrinos/antineutrinos beams on nuclear targets by CTEQ collaboration has confirmed the observation of CCFR and NuTeV collaborations, that weak structure function $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ is different from electromagnetic structure function $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ in a nucleus like iron, specially in the region of low $x$ and $Q^2$. In view of this observation we have made a study of nuclear medium effects on $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ for a wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$ using a microscopic nuclear model. We have considered Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions from pion and rho mesons and shadowing effects to incorporate nuclear medium effects. The calculations are performed in a local density approximation using a relativistic nucleon spectral function which includes nucleon correlations. The numerical results in the case of iron nucleus are compared with the experimental data.

Nuclear medium effects in Drell-Yan process

We study the nuclear medium effects in Drell-Yan process using quark parton distribution functions calculated in a microscopic nuclear model which takes into account the effects of Fermi motion, nuclear binding and nucleon correlations through a relativistic nucleon spectral function. The contributions of $π$ and $ρ$ mesons as well as shadowing effects are also included. The beam energy loss is calculated using a phenomenological approach. The present theoretical results are compared with the experimental results of E772 and E886 experiments. These results are applicable to the forthcoming experimental analysis of E906 Sea Quest experiment at Fermi Lab.

Pion production off the nucleon

We have studied charged current neutrino/antineutrino induced weak pion production from nucleon. For the present study, contributions from $Δ(1232)$-resonant term, non-resonant background terms as well as contribution from higher resonances viz. $P_{11}$(1440), $D_{13}$(1520), $S_{11}$(1535), $S_{11}$(1650) and $P_{13}$(1720) are taken. To write the hadronic current for the non-resonant background terms, a microscopic approach based on SU(2) non-linear sigma model has been used. The vector form factors for the resonances are obtained from the helicity amplitudes provided by MAID. Axial coupling in the case of $Δ(1232)$ resonance is obtained by fitting the ANL and BNL $ν$-deuteron reanalyzed scattering data. The results of the cross sections are presented and discussed for all the possible channels of single pion production induced by charged current interaction.

Revisiting $ν_μ(\barν_μ)$ and $ν_e(\barν_e) $ Induced Quasielastic Scattering from Nuclei in Sub-GeV Energy Region

We present the results of charged current quasielastic(CCQE) scattering cross sections from free as well as bound nucleons like in $^{12}C$, $^{16}O$, $^{40}Ar$ and $^{208}Pb$ nuclear targets in $E_ν(_{\barν})~\le~ $1 GeV energy region. The results are obtained using local Fermi gas model with and without RPA effect. The differences those may arise in the electron and muon production cross sections due to the different lepton mass, uncertainties in the axial dipole mass $M_A$ and pseudoscalar form factor, and due to the inclusion of second class currents have been highlighted for neutrino/antineutrino induced processes.

Parity violating asymmetry with nuclear medium effects in deep inelastic $\vec e$ scattering

Recently at JLab using polarised electron beam on unpolarised deuteron target measurements have been performed for the parity violating asymmetry($A_{PV}$) and there are future plans to measure this asymmetry using various nuclear targets. In this paper, we study $A_{PV}$ in nuclear targets like $^{12}C$, $^{56}Fe$ and $^{208}Pb$, in a local density approximation using spectral function which takes into account Fermi motion, binding energy correction and nucleon correlations. Furthermore, the pion and rho cloud contributions have also been taken into account. The present model has been used earlier to study medium effects in electromagnetic as well as weak interaction induced processes in the DIS region.
