Signatures of canted antiferromagnetism in infinite-layer nickelates studied by x-ray magnetic dichroism

We report an experimental study of the magnetic properties of infinite-layer Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Ni L3,2 and Nd M5,4 edges. We show that at low temperatures the out-of-plane component of the Ni1+ spin-moment is characterized by a rapid increase for magnetic fields below 1T , followed by a slower linear increase reaching a spin-moment value of 0.25uB/Ni at 9T in the case of superconducting Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2. On the other hand, the Nd M5,4 XMCD shows a clear paramagnetic behaviour, which make both Ni- and Nd-spin-sublattices fully uncorrelated. The magnetic field and temperature dependencies of the Ni L3,2 XMCD data can be explained by assuming an out-of-plane canting of the strongly in-plane anti-ferromagnetic ordered Ni1+ spins. A symmetry lowering of the NiO2 planes observed via four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, triggering a DMI, can be responsible of the proposed Ni1+ spin-canting at zero-field. The resulting out-of-plane weak-ferromagnetic coupling under magnetic field explains the relatively large spin-moment and its magnetic field and temperature dependence.

Charge and spin order dichotomy in NdNiO$_2$ driven by SrTiO$_3$ capping layer

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates holds exciting analogies with that of cuprates, with similar structures and $3d$-electron count. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we studied electronic and magnetic excitations and charge density correlations in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ thin films with and without an SrTiO$_3$ capping layer. We observe dispersing magnons only in the capped samples, progressively dampened at higher doping. In addition, we detect an elastic resonant scattering peak in the uncapped $x=0$ compound at wave vector (1/3,0), remindful of the charge order signal in hole doped cuprates. The peak weakens at $x=0.05$ and disappears in the superconducting $x=0.20$ film. The uncapped samples also present a higher degree of Ni$3d$-Nd$5d$ hybridization and a smaller anisotropy of the Ni$3d$ occupation with respect to the capped samples. The role of the capping on the possible hydrogen incorporation or on other mechanisms responsible for the electronic reconstruction far from the interface remains to be understood.

Orbital selective switching of ferromagnetism in an oxide quasi two-dimensional electron gas

Multi-orbital physics in quasi-two-dimensional electron gases (q2DEGs) triggers unique phenomena not observed in bulk materials, such as unconventional superconductivity and magnetism. Here, we investigate the mechanism of orbital selective switching of the spin-polarization in the oxide q2DEG formed at the (001) interface between the LaAlO$_{3}$, EuTiO$_{3}$ and SrTiO$_{3}$ band insulators. By using density functional theory calculations, transport, magnetic and x-ray spectroscopy measurements, we find that the filling of titanium-bands with 3d$_{xz,yz}$ orbital character in the EuTiO3 layer and at the interface with SrTiO$_{3}$ induces an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic switching of the exchange interaction between Eu-4f$^{7}$ magnetic moments. The results explain the observation of the carrier density dependent ferromagnetic correlations and anomalous Hall effect in this q2DEG, and demonstrate how combined theoretical and experimental approaches can lead to a deeper understanding of novel electronic phases and serve as a guide for the materials design for advanced electronic applications.

Unusual direction-dependent magnetic orbital moment obtained from X-ray magnetic circular dichroism in a multiferroic oxide system

The electric-field control of $d$-electron magnetism in multiferroic transition metal oxides is attracting widespread interest for the underlying fundamental physics and for next generation spintronic devices. Here, we report an extensive study of the $3d$ magnetism in magnetoelectric Ga$_{0.6}$Fe$_{1.4}$O$_3$ (GFO) epitaxial films by polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We found a non-zero integral of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, with a sign depending upon the relative orientation between the external magnetic field and the crystallographic axes. %By reliably enlarging the limit of the spin and orbital sum rules, which usually holds for materials where the magnetic ions exhibit a unique crystal field symmetry This finding translates in a sign-reversal between the average Fe magnetic orbital and spin moments. Large Fe-displacements, among some of the octahedral sites, lower the symmetry of the system producing anisotropic paths for the Fe-O bondings giving rise to a large orbital-lattice interaction akin to a preferential crystallographic direction for the magnetic orbital moment. The latter may lead to a partial re-orientation of the magnetic orbital moment under an external magnetic field that, combined to the ferrimagnetic nature of the GFO, can qualitatively explain the observed sign-reversal of the XMCD integral. The results suggest that a control over the local symmetry of the oxygen octahedra in transition metal oxides can offer a suitable leverage over the manipulation of the effective orbital and spin moments in magnetoelectric systems.

A two-dimensional electron gas at the (001) surface of ferromagnetic EuTiO$_{3}$(001)

Studies on oxide quasi-two dimensional electron gas (q2DEG) have been a playground for the discovery of novel and sometimes unexpected phenomena, like the reported magnetism at the surface and at the interface between LaAlO$_{3}$ and SrTiO$_{3}$ non-magnetic materials. However, magnetism in this system is weak and there are evidences of a not intrinsic origin. Here, by using in-situ high-resolution angle resolved photoemission we demonstrate that ferromagnetic EuTiO$_{3}$, the magnetic counterpart of SrTiO$_{3}$ in the bulk, hosts a q2DEG at its (001) surface. This is confirmed by density functional theory calculations with Hubbard U terms in the presence of oxygen divacancies in various configurations, all of them leading to a spin-polarized q2DEG related to the ferromagnetic order of Eu-4f magnetic moments. The results suggest EuTiO$_{3}$(001) as a new material platform for oxide q2DEGs, characterized by broken inversion and time reversal symmetries.

Evolution of topological superconductivity by orbital selective confinement in oxide nanowires

We determine the optimal conditions to achieve topological superconducting phases having spin-singlet pairing for a planar nanowire with finite lateral width in the presence of an in-plane external magnetic field. We employ a microscopic description that is based on a three-band electronic model including both the atomic spin-orbit coupling and the inversion asymmetric potential at the interface between oxide band-gap insulators. We consider amplitudes of the pairing gap, spin-orbit interactions and electronic parameters that are directly applicable to nanowires of LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$. The lateral confinement introduces a splitting of the $d$-orbitals that alters the orbital energy hierarchy and significantly affects the electron filling dependence of the topological phase diagram. Due to the orbital directionality of the $t_{2g}$-states, we find that in the regime of strong confinement the onset of topological phases is pinned at electron filling where the quasi flat heavy bands start to get populated. The increase of the nanowire thickness leads to a changeover from sparse-to-dense distribution of topologically non-trivial domains which occurs at the cross-over associated to the orbital population inversion. These findings are corroborated by a detailed analysis of the most favorable topological superconducting phases in the electron doping-magnetic field plane highlighting the role of orbital selective confinement.

Quantized conductance in a one-dimensional ballistic oxide nanodevice

Electric-field effect control of two-dimensional electron gases (2-DEG) has enabled the exploration of nanoscale electron quantum transport in semiconductors. Beyond these classical materials, transition metal-oxide-based structures have d-electronic states favoring the emergence of novel quantum orders absent in conventional semiconductors. In this context, the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface that combines gate-tunable superconductivity and sizeable spin-orbit coupling is emerging as a promising platform to realize topological superconductivity. However, the fabrication of nanodevices in which the electronic properties of this oxide interface can be controlled at the nanoscale by field-effect remains a scientific and technological challenge. Here, we demonstrate the quantization of conductance in a ballistic quantum point contact (QPC), formed by electrostatic confinement of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 2-DEG with a split-gate. Through finite source-drain voltage, we perform a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of the 3d energy levels inside the QPC, which can be regarded as a spectrometer able to probe Majorana states in an oxide 2-DEG.

Polarization resolved Cu $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of orbital and spin excitations in NdBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$

High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven particularly effective in the determination of crystal field and spin excitations in cuprates. Its strength lies in the large Cu $L_{3}$ resonance and in the fact that the scattering cross section follows quite closely the single-ion model predictions, both in the insulating parent compounds and in the superconducting doped materials. However, the spectra become increasingly broader with (hole) doping, hence resolving and assigning spectral features has proven challenging even with the highest energy resolution experimentally achievable. Here we have overcome this limitation by measuring the complete polarization dependence of the RIXS spectra as function of momentum transfer and doping in thin films of NdBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$. Besides confirming the previous assignment of $dd$ and spin excitations (magnon, bimagnon) in the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compound, we unequivocally single out the actual spin-flip contribution at all dopings. We also demonstrate that the softening of $dd$ excitations is mainly attributed to the shift of the $xy$ peak to lower energy loss. These results provide a definitive assessment of the RIXS spectra of cuprates and demonstrate that RIXS measurements with full polarization control are practically feasible and highly informative.

Dynamical charge density fluctuations pervading the phase diagram of a Cu-based high-Tc superconductor

Charge density waves are a common occurrence in all families of high critical temperature superconducting cuprates. Although consistently observed in the underdoped region of the phase diagram and at relatively low temperatures, it is still unclear to what extent they influence the unusual properties of these systems. Using resonant x-ray scattering we carefully determined the temperature dependence of charge density modulations in (Y,Nd)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ for three doping levels. We discovered short-range dynamical charge density fluctuations besides the previously known quasi-critical charge density waves. They persist up to well above the pseudogap temperature T*, are characterized by energies of few meV and pervade a large area of the phase diagram, so that they can play a key role in shaping the peculiar normal-state properties of cuprates.

Symmetry breaking at the (111) interfaces of SrTiO${_3}$ hosting a 2D-electron system

We used x-ray absorption spectroscopy to study the orbital symmetry and the energy band splitting of (111) LaAlO${_3}$/SrTiO${_3}$ and LaAlO${_3}$/EuTiO${_3}$/SrTiO${_3}$ heterostructures, hosting a quasi two-dimensional electron system (q2DES), and of a Ti-terminated (111) SrTiO${_3}$ single crystal, also known to form a q2DES at its surface. We demonstrate that the bulk tetragonal Ti-3d D${_4}$${_h}$ crystal field is turned into trigonal D${_3}$${_d}$ crystal field in all cases. The symmetry adapted a${_1}$${_g}$ and e${^\pi_g}$ orbitals are non-degenerate in energy and their splitting, \Delta, is positive at the bare STO surface but negative in the heterostructures, where the a${_1}$${_g}$ orbital is lowest in energy. These results demonstrate that the interfacial symmetry breaking induced by epitaxial engineering of oxide interfaces has a dramatic effect on their electronic properties, and it can be used to manipulate the ground state of the q2DES.

Re-entrant charge order in overdoped (Bi,Pb)$_{2.12}$Sr$_{1.88}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ outside the pseudogap regime

Charge modulations are considered as a leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates, and their relationship to Fermi surface reconstructions and to the pseudogap state is an important subject of current research. Overdoped cuprates, on the other hand, are widely regarded as conventional Fermi liquids without collective electronic order. For the overdoped (Bi,Pb)2.12Sr1.88CuO6+{\delta} (Bi2201) high-temperature superconductor, here we report resonant x-ray scattering measurements revealing incommensurate charge order reflections, with correlation lengths of 40-60 lattice units, that persist up to at least 250K. Charge order is markedly more robust in the overdoped than underdoped regime but the incommensurate wave vectors follow a common trend; moreover it coexists with a single, unreconstructed Fermi surface, without pseudogap or nesting features, as determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This re-entrant charge order is reproduced by model calculations that consider a strong van Hove singularity within a Fermi liquid framework.

Direct observation of charge order in underdoped and optimally doped Bi$_{2}$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Charge order in underdoped and optimally doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) is investigated by Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We have directly observed charge density modulation in the optimally doped Bi2201 at momentum transfer $Q_{\|} \simeq 0.23$ rlu, with smaller intensity and correlation length with respect to the underdoped sample. This demonstrates that short-range charge order in Bi2201 persists up to optimal doping, as in other hole-doped cuprates. We explored the nodal (diagonal) direction and found no charge order peak, confirming that charge order modulates only along the Cu-O bond directions. We measured the out-of-plane dependence of charge order, finding a flat response and no maxima at half integer \emph{L} values. This suggests there is no out-of-plane phase correlation in single layer Bi2201, at variance from YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and La$_{2-x}$(Ba,Sr)$_x$CuO$_4$. Combining our results with data from the literature we assess that charge order in Bi2201 exists in a large doping range across the phase diagram, i.e. $0.07 \lesssim p \lesssim 0.16$, demonstrating thereby that it is intimately entangled with the antiferromagnetic background, the pseudogap and superconductivity.

Influence of apical oxygen on the extent of in-plane exchange interaction in cuprate superconductors

In high Tc superconductors the magnetic and electronic properties are determined by the probability that valence electrons virtually jump from site to site in the CuO2 planes, a mechanism opposed by on-site Coulomb repulsion and favored by hopping integrals. The spatial extent of the latter is related to transport properties, including superconductivity, and to the dispersion relation of spin excitations (magnons). Here, for three antiferromagnetic parent compounds (single-layer Bi2Sr0.99La1.1CuO6+delta, double-layer Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3O6 and infinite-layer CaCuO2) differing by the number of apical atoms, we compare the magnetic spectra measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering over a significant portion of the reciprocal space and with unprecedented accuracy. We observe that the absence of apical oxygens increases the in-plane hopping range and, in CaCuO2, it leads to a genuine 3D exchange-bond network. These results establish a corresponding relation between the exchange interactions and the crystal structure, and provide fresh insight into the materials dependence of the superconducting transition temperature.

Mixed Dimensionality of Confined Conducting Electrons in the Surface Region of SrTiO$_{3}$

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the recently-discovered surface state on SrTiO$_{3}$ consists of non-degenerate $t_{2g}$ states with different dimensional characters. While the $d_{xy}$ bands have quasi-2D dispersions with weak $k_{z}$ dependence, the lifted $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ bands show 3D dispersions that differ significantly from bulk expectations and signal that electrons associated with those orbitals permeate the near-surface region. Like their more 2D counterparts, the size and character of the $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ Fermi surface components are essentially the same for different sample preparations. Irradiating SrTiO$_{3}$ in ultrahigh vacuum is one method observed so far to induce the "universal" surface metallic state. We reveal that during this process, changes in the oxygen valence band spectral weight that coincide with the emergence of surface conductivity are disproportionate to any change in the total intensity of the O $1s$ core level spectrum. This signifies that the formation of the metallic surface goes beyond a straightforward chemical doping scenario and occurs in conjunction with profound changes in the initial states and/or spatial distribution of near-$E_{F}$ electrons in the surface region.

Electronic reconstruction at the interface between band insulating oxides: the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system

The conducting quasi-two dimensional electron system (q2DES) formed at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 band insulators is confronting the condensed matter physics community with new paradigms. While the mechanism for the formation of the q2DES is debated, new conducting interfaces have been discovered paving the way to possible applications in electronics, spintronics and optoelectronics. This chapter is an overview of the research on the LAO/STO sys-tem, presenting some of the most important results obtained in the last decade to clarify the mechanism of formation of the q2DES at the oxide interfaces and its peculiar electronic properties as compared to semiconducting 2D-electron gas.

Growth and characterization of conducting LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 het-erostructures

We studied the structural, magnetic and transport properties of LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition. The samples have been characterized in-situ by electron diffraction and scanning probe mi-croscopy and ex-situ by transport measurements and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 films show a ferromagnetic transition at T<7.5 K, related to the ordering of Eu2+ spins, even in samples characterized by just two EuTiO3 unit cells. A finite metallic conductivity is observed only in the case of samples composed by one or two EuTiO3 unit cells and, simultaneously, by a LaAlO3 thickness equal or above 4 unit cells. The role of ferromagnetic EuTiO3 on the transport properties of delta-doped LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 is critically discussed.

The Conducting Channel at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ Interface

Localization of electrons in the two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface is investigated by varying the channel thickness in order to establish the nature of the conducting channel. Layers of SrTiO$_3$ were grown on NdGaO$_3$ (110) substrates and capped with LaAlO$_3$. When the SrTiO$_3$ thickness is $\leq 6$ unit cells, most electrons at the interface are localized, but when the number of SrTiO$_3$ layers is 8-16, the free carrier density approaches $3.3 \times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, the value corresponding to charge transfer of 0.5 electron per unit cell at the interface. The number of delocalized electrons decreases again when the SrTiO$_3$ thickness is $\geq 20$ unit cells. The $\sim{4}$ nm conducting channel is therefore located significantly below the interface. The results are explained in terms of Anderson localization and the position of the mobility edge with respect to the Fermi level.

Origin of interface magnetism in BiMnO3/SrTiO3 and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Possible ferromagnetism induced in otherwise non-magnetic materials has been motivating intense research in complex oxide heterostructures. Here we show that a confined magnetism is realized at the interface between SrTiO3 and two insulating polar oxides, BiMnO3 and LaAlO3. By using polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find that in both cases the magnetic order is stabilized by a negative exchange interaction between the electrons transferred to the interface and local magnetic moments. These local magnetic moments are associated to Ti3+ ions at the interface itself for LaAlO3/SrTiO3 and to Mn3+ ions in the overlayer for BiMnO3/SrTiO3. In LaAlO3/SrTiO3 the induced magnetic moments are quenched by annealing in oxygen, suggesting a decisive role of oxygen vacancies in the stabilization of interfacial magnetism.
