A 3 dimensional diagnostic diagram for Seyfert 2s: probing X-ray absorption and Compton thickness

We present and discuss a "3-dimensional" diagnostic diagram for Seyfert2 galaxies obtained by means of X-ray and [OIII] data on a large sample of objects (reported in the Appendix). The diagram shows the Kalpha iron line equivalent width as a function of both the column density derived from the photoelectric cutoff and the 2-10 keV flux normalized to the [OIII] optical line flux (the latter corrected for extinction and assumed to be a true indicator of the source intrinsic luminosity). We find that the hard X-ray properties of type 2 objects depend on a single parameter, the absorbing column density along the line of sight,in accordance with the unified model. The diagram can be used to identify Compton thick sources and to isolate and study peculiar objects. From this analysis we have obtained a column density distribution of Seyfert 2 galaxies which is thought to be a good approximation of the real distribution. A large population of heavily absorbed objects is discovered, including many Compton thick candidates. Our results indicate that the mean Log Nh/cm^(-2)in type 2 Seyferts is 23.5 and that as much as 23-30% of sources have Nh > 10^24 cm^(-2).

High Observed Brightnesses in Radio Jets

We study the variability properties at radio frequencies of the jets thought to be typical of Active Galactic Nuclei, i.e. bulk Lorentz factor Γ~ 10, and incoherent synchrotron emission. We assume that the radiating electrons are accelerated at shocks within the jet, and that these shocks have a suitable (conical) geometry. In our framework, we can reproduce the variability pattern of Intra Day Variables (20% in less than 1 day) as long as the observed brightness temperature is T_B < 3x10^{17} K. The only stringent condition is an injection timescale of the perturbation shorter than the variability timescale; the geometric condition on the viewing direction is not especially severe, and agrees with the observed occurrence of the phenomenon. For higher values of T_B coherent processes are probably necessary.

The Disks of Galaxies with Seyfert and Starburst Nuclei: II. Near-Infrared Structural Properties

We have derived the near-infrared structural components of a sample of Seyfert and starburst (SBN) host galaxies by fitting the images of Hunt et al. (1997,ApJS,108,229) with a new two-dimensional decomposition algorithm. An analysis of the fitted parameters shows that Seyfert 1 and SBN bulges resemble normal early-type bulges in structure and color, with (J-K)^c_b about 0.1 mag redder than disk (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert 2 bulges, instead, are bluer than normal with (J-K)^c_b ~ (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert disks (especially Type 1), but not those of SBNs, are abnormally bright (in surface brightness), significantly more so than even the brightest normal disks. Seyfert disks are also compact, but similar to those in normal early-type spirals. For a given mass, Seyferts and especially SBNs are abnormally rich in neutral hydrogen, and there is strong, albeit indirect, evidence for lower mass-to-light (M/L) ratios in Seyfert and SBN disks, but for normal M/Ls in their bulges. In Seyferts and SBNs, HI mass fractions and M/L ratios are anticorrelated, and we attribute the high gas mass fractions and low M/Ls in SBNs and several Seyferts to ongoing star formation. Such abundant gas in Seyferts would be expected to inhibit bar formation, which may explain why active galaxies are not always barred.

Heavy obscuration in X-ray weak AGNs

We present observations in the 0.1-100 keV spectral band of 8 Seyfert 2 galaxies, obtained by means of BeppoSAX. These sources were selected according to their [OIII] optical emission line flux, to avoid biases against obscuration on the pc scale. All sources were detected. All of them are weak X-ray emitters, and most of them are characterized by prominent iron lines at 6.4-7 keV (EW > 500 eV) and by a flat continuum, indicative of heavy obscuration along our line of sight (N_H > 10^25 cm^-2 in most cases). These results 1) provide further evidence in favor of the unified scenario, and 2) indicate that the average obscuration of type 2 AGNs is very likely much higher than deduced by former X-ray surveys. These findings have important implications for the synthesis of the X-ray background.

Rapid Variability of Gamma-Ray Blazars: A Model for MKN 421

The extremely rapid burst of TeV photons from Mkn 421 (15 May 1996) can be reconciled with the standard properties of a relativistic gamma-ray emitting jet (bulk Lorentz factor $\approx$ 10; size $\10^{17}$ cm) if one assumes that the electrons are accelerated in conical shocks with both opening and viewing angles $\approx 1/Γ$. If the injection time and the cooling time are much less than the photon crossing time, an emission ring moves along the jet and leads to the appearance of a very rapid flare, in satisfactory agreement with the observations.

BeppoSAX observations of PKS 0528+134

We report on the BeppoSAX observations of the gamma-ray blazar PKS 0528+134 performed in Feb and Mar 1997, during a multiwavelength campaign involving EGRET and ground based telescopes. The source was in a faint and hard state, with energy spectral index alpha=0.48+-0.04 between 0.1 and 10 keV, and [2-10] keV flux of 2.7E-12 erg/cm2/s. No significant variability was observed. The source was detected in the 20-120 keV band by the PDS, with a flux lying slightly above the extrapolation from lower X-ray energies. Comparing this low state with previous higher states of the source, there is an indication that the X-ray spectrum hardens and the gamma-ray spectrum steepens when the source is fainter.

X-ray detections of weak Seyfert2's with BeppoSAX

We report the detection in the X rays of two weak Seyfert2's (NGC3393 and NGC4941) with the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX. These are among the first sources observed in a sample of 12 Seyfert2's which are being studied within the BeppoSAX core program, in an effort to probe the putative torus at high X-ray energies, calibrate an isotropic luminosity indicator for absorbed nuclei, and determine the distribution of torus thicknesses, Nh. Both a Compton thick spectrum, with a reflected power law and a large equivalent width iron line, and a Compton thin spectrum, with the intrinsic power law transmitted through a large column density absorber, provide acceptable fits to both sources, with some preference for the latter model in the case of NGC4941. The high initial detection rate in our program points to a large final X-ray sample.

The Supernova Remnant G11.2-0.3 and its central Pulsar

The plerion inside the composite Supernova Remnant G11.2-0.3 appears to be dominated by the magnetic field to an extent unprecedented among well known cases. We discuss its evolution as determined by a central pulsar and the interaction with the surrounding thermal remnant, which in turn interacts with the ambient medium. We find that a plausible scenario exists, where all the observations can be reproduced with rather typical values for the parameters of the system; we also obtain the most likely period for the still undetected pulsar.
