Unification of inflation and dark energy {\it à la} quintessential inflation

This pedagogical review is devoted to quintessential inflation, which refers to unification of inflation and dark energy using a single scalar field. We present a brief but concise description of the concepts needed to join the two ends, which include discussion on scalar field dynamic, conformal coupling, instant preheating and relic gravitational waves. Models of quintessential inflation broadly fall into two classes, depending upon the early and late time behavior of the field potential. In the first type we include models in which the field potential is steep for most of the history of the Universe but turn shallow at late times, whereas in the second type the potential is shallow at early times followed by a steep behavior thereafter. In models of the first category inflation can be realized by invoking high-energy brane-induced damping, which is needed to facilitate slow roll along a steep potential. In models of second type one may invoke a non-minimal coupling of the scalar field with massive neutrino matter, which might induce a minimum in the potential at late times as neutrinos turn non-relativistic. In this category we review a class of models with non-canonical kinetic term in the Lagrangian, which can comply with recent B mode polarization measurements. The scenario under consideration is distinguished by the presence of a kinetic phase, which precedes the radiative regime, giving rise to blue spectrum of gravity waves generated during inflation. We highlight the generic features of quintessential inflation and also discuss on issues related to Lyth bound.

Evading Lyth bound in models of quintessential inflation

Quintessential inflation refers to an attempt to unify inflation and late-time cosmic acceleration using a single scalar field. In this letter we consider two different classes of quintessential inflation, one of which is based upon a Lagrangian with non-canonical kinetic term $k^2(ϕ)\partial^μϕ\partial_μϕ$ and a steep exponential potential while the second class uses the concept of steep brane world inflation. We show that in both cases the Lyth bound can be evaded, despite the large tensor-to-scalar ratio of perturbations. The post-inflationary dynamics is consistent with nucleosynthesis constraint in these cases.

Variable gravity: A suitable framework for quintessential inflation

In this paper, we investigate a scenario of variable gravity and apply it to the unified description of inflation and late time cosmic acceleration dubbed quintessential inflation. The scalar field called "cosmon" which in this model unifies both the concepts reduces to inflaton at early epochs. We calculate the slow-roll parameters, the Hubble parameter at the end of inflation, the reheating temperature, the tensor-to-scalar ration and demonstrate the agreement of the model with observations and the Planck data.As for the post inflationary dynamics, cosmon tracks the background before it exits the scaling regime at late times. The scenario gives rise to correct epoch sequence of standard cosmology, namely, radiative regime, matter phase and dark-energy. We show that the long kinetic regime after inflation gives rise to enhancement of relic gravity wave amplitude resulting into violation of nucleosynthesis constraint at the commencement of radiative regime in case of an inefficient reheating mechanism such as gravitational particle production. Instant preheating is implemented to successfully circumvent the problem. As a generic feature, the scenario gives rise to a blue spectrum for gravity waves on scales smaller than the comoving horizon scale at the commencement of the radiative regime.

A class of quintessential inflation models with parameter space consistent with BICEP2

In this paper, we focus on general features of quintessential inflation which is an effort to unify inflation and dark energy using a single scalar field. We describe a class of models of quintessential inflation which can give rise to the tensor to scalar ratio of perturbations consistent with recent BICEP2 measurements. The scale of inflation in the model is around the GUT scale and there is large parameter space consistent with the recent findings.

Cosmological investigations of (extended) nonlinear massive gravity schemes with non-minimal coupling

In this paper we investigate the case of non-minimal coupling in the (extended) nonlinear massive gravity theories. We first consider massive gravity in the Brans-Dicke background such that the graviton mass is replaced by $A^2(σ)m$ where $σ$ is the Brans-Dicke field and $A(σ)$ is conformal coupling and show that there is no viable thermal history of the universe in this case. We then invoke a cubic galileon term as nonlinear completion of the $σ$ Lagrangian and show that there is a stable de Sitter solution in this case. However, the de Sitter is blocked by the matter phase which is also a simultaneous attractor of the dynamics. The de Sitter phase can, however, be realized by invoking unnatural fine tunings. We next investigate cosmology of quasi-dilaton nonlinear massive gravity with non-minimal coupling. As a generic feature of the non-minimal coupling, we show that the model exhibits a transient phantom phase which is otherwise impossible. While performing the observational data analysis on the models, we find that a small value of coupling constant is allowed for quasi-dilaton nonlinear massive gravity. For both the cases under consideration, it is observed that we have an effective pressure of matter which comes from the constraint equation. For mass-varying nonlinear massive gravity in the Brans-Dicke background, the effective pressure of matter is non zero which affects the evolution of the Hubble parameter thereby spoiling consistency of the model with data. As for, quasi-dilaton nonlinear massive gravity, the effective pressure of matter can be kept around zero by controlling the coupling constant, the model is shown to be fit well with observations.

Cosmology with hybrid expansion law: scalar field reconstruction of cosmic history and observational constraints

In this paper, we consider a simple form of expansion history of Universe referred to as the hybrid expansion law - a product of power-law and exponential type of functions. The ansatz by construction mimics the power-law and de Sitter cosmologies as special cases but also provides an elegant description of the transition from deceleration to cosmic acceleration. We point out the Brans-Dicke realization of the cosmic history under consideration. We construct potentials for quintessence, phantom and tachyon fields, which can give rise to the hybrid expansion law in general relativity. We investigate observational constraints on the model with hybrid expansion law applied to late time acceleration as well as to early universe a la nucleosynthesis.

Why is Universe so dark ?

In this presentation prepared for a general audience, we briefly mention the shortcomings of standard model of universe. We then focus on the late time inconsistency of the model dubbed age crisis whose resolution requires the presence of a repulsive effect that could be sourced either by dark energy or by a large scale modification of gravity. By and large, our description is based upon Newtonian cosmology which is simple and elegant despite of its limitations. On heuristic grounds, we explain how a tiny mass of graviton could account for late time cosmic acceleration. We also include a brief discussion on the underlying physics of Type Ia supernovae explosion and the direct confirmation of late time acceleration of Universe by the related observations.

New exact cosmologies on the brane

We develop a method for constructing exact cosmological solutions in brane world cosmology. New classes of cosmological solutions on Randall-Sandrum brane are obtained. The superpotential and Hubble parameter are represented in quadratures. These solutions have inflationary phases under general assumptions and also describe an exit from the inflationary phase without a fine tuning of the parameters. Another class solutions can describe the current phase of accelerated expansion with or without possible exit from it.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in cosmos: The hybrid symmetron as a dark energy switching device

We consider symmetron model in a generalized background with a hope to make it compatible with dark energy. We observe a "no go" theorem at least in case of a conformal coupling. Being convinced of symmetron incapability to be dark energy, we try to retain its role for spontaneous symmetry breaking and assign the role of dark energy either to standard quintessence or $F(R)$ theory which are switched on by symmetron field in the symmetry broken phase. The scenario reduces to standard Einstein gravity in the high density region. After the phase transition generated by symmetron field, either the $F(R)$ gravity or the standard quintessence are induced in the low density region. we demonstrate that local gravity constraints and other requirements are satisfied although the model could generate the late-time acceleration of Universe.

Quasi-dilaton non-linear massive gravity: Investigations of background cosmological dynamics

We investigate cosmological behavior in the quasi-Dilaton non-linear massive gravity. We perform a detailed dynamical analysis and examine the stable late-time solutions relevant to late time cosmic acceleration. We demonstrate that a dark-energy dominated, cosmological-constant-like solution is a late attractor of the dynamics. We also analyze the evolution of the universe at intermediate times, showing that the observed epoch sequence can be easily obtained in the model under consideration. Furthermore, we study the non-singular bounce and the cosmological turnaround which can be realized for a region of the parameter space. Last but not least, we use observational data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), in order to constrain the parameters of the theory.

Cosmological dynamics of non-minimally coupled scalar field system and its late time cosmic relevance

We investigate the cosmological dynamics of non-minimally coupled scalar field system described by $F(ϕ)R$ coupling with $F(ϕ)=(1-ξϕ^N)R$($N\ge2$) and the field potential, $V(ϕ)=V_0ϕ^n$. We use a generic set of dynamical variables to bring out new asymptotic regimes of the underlying dynamics. However, our dynamical variables miss the most important fixed point$-$ the de Sitter solution. We make use of the original form of system of equations to investigate the issues related to this important solution. In particular, we show that the de-Sitter solution which is a dynamical attractor of the system lies in the region of negative effective gravitational constant $G_N$ thereby leading to a ghost dominated universe in future and a transient quintessence(phantom) phase with $G_N>0 $ around the present epoch (however, as demonstrated by Starobinsky in 1981, the ghost dominated universe, if exists, can not be accessed from the Universe we live in, we shall say more about this important result in the last section). We also carry out comparison of the model with other competing models of dark energy such as galileon modified gravity and others.

Light mass galileons: Cosmological dynamics, mass screening and observational constraints

In this paper, we examine the cosmological viability of a light mass galileon field consistent with local gravity constraints. The minimal, L_3=\Boxϕ(\partial_μϕ)^2, massless galileon field requires an additional term in order to give rise to a viable ghost free late time acceleration of Universe. The desired cosmological dynamics can either be achieved by incorporating an additional terms in the action such as (L_4,L_5) - the higher order galileon Lagrangians or by considering a light mass field a la galileon field potential. We analyse the second possibility and find that: (1) The model produces a viable cosmology in the regime where the non-linear galileon field is subdominant, (2) The Vainshtein mechanism operates at small scales where the non-linear effects become important and contribution of the field potential ceases to be significant. Also the small mass of the field under consideration is protected against strong quantum corrections thereby providing quantum stability to the system.

Generic f(R) theories and classicality of their scalarons

We study quantum stability bound on the mass of scalaron in generic theories of $f(R)$ gravity. We show that in these scenarios, the scalaron mass increases faster with local density of the environment than one loop quantum correction to it thereby leading to violation of quantum bound on the chameleon mass. The introduction of quadratic curvature corrections in the action are shown to stabilize the model.

Inflation driven by single geometric tachyon with D-brane orbiting around NS5-branes

We investigate models in which inflation is driven by a single geometrical tachyon. We assume that the D-brane as a probe brane in the background of NS5-branes has non-zero angular momentum which is shown to play similar role as the number of the scalar fields of the assisted inflation. We demonstrate that the angular momentum corrected effective potential allows to account for the observational constraint on COBE normalization, spectral index $n_S$ and the tensor to scalar ratio of perturbations consistent with WMAP seven years data.

Vainshtein mechanism in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and Galileon aether

We derive field equations of Gauss-Bonnet gravity in 4 dimensions after dimensional reduction of the action and demonstrate that in this scenario Vainshtein mechanism operates in the flat spherically symmetric background. We show that inside this Vainshtein sphere the fifth force is negligibly small compared to the gravitational force. We also investigate stability of the spherically symmetric solution, clarify the vocabulary used in the literature about the hyperbolicity of the equation and the ghost-Laplacian stability conditions. We find superluminal behavior of the perturbation of the field in the radial direction. However, because of the presence of the non linear terms, the structure of the space-time is modified and as a result the field does not propagate in the Minkowski metric but rather in an "aether" composed by the scalar field $π(r)$. We thereby demonstrate that the superluminal behavior does not create time paradoxes thank to the absence of Causal Closed Curves. We also derive the stability conditions for Friedmann Universe in context with scalar and tensor perturbations.

Inflation with improved D3-brane potential and the fine tunings associated with the model

We investigate brane-antibrane inflation in a warped deformed conifold background that includes contributions to the potential arising from imaginary anti-self-dual (IASD) fluxes including the term with irrational scaling dimension discovered recently. We find that the model can give rise to required number of e-foldings; observational constraint on COBE normalization is easily satisfied and low value of the tensor to scalar ratio of perturbations is achieved. We observe that these corrections to the effective potential help in relaxing the severe fine tunings associated with the earlier analysis.

Modified gravity a la Galileon: Late time cosmic acceleration and observational constraints

In this paper we examine the cosmological consequences of fourth order Galileon gravity. We carry out detailed investigations of the underlying dynamics and demonstrate the stability of one de Sitter phase. The stable de Sitter phase contains a Galileon field $π$ which is an increasing function of time (\dotπ>0). Using the required suppression of the fifth force, supernovae, BAO and CMB data, we constrain parameters of the model. We find that the $π$ matter coupling parameter $β$ is constrained to small numerical values such that $β$<0.02. We also show that the parameters of the third and fourth order in the action (c_3,c_4) are not independent and with reasonable assumptions, we obtain constraints on them. We investigate the growth history of the model and find that the sub-horizon approximation is not allowed for this model. We demonstrate strong scale dependence of linear perturbations in the fourth order Galileon gravity.

Formation of caustics in Dirac-Born-Infeld type scalar field systems

We investigate the formation of caustics in Dirac-Born-Infeld type scalar field systems for generic classes of potentials, viz., massive rolling scalar with potential, $V(ϕ)=V_0e^{\pm \frac{1}{2} M^2 ϕ^2}$ and inverse power-law potentials with $V(ϕ)=V_0/ϕ^n,~0<n<2$. We find that in the case of\texttt{} exponentially decreasing rolling massive scalar field potential, there are multi-valued regions and regions of likely to be caustics in the field configuration. However there are no caustics in the case of exponentially increasing potential. We show that the formation of caustics is inevitable for the inverse power-law potentials under consideration in Minkowski space time whereas caustics do not form in this case in the FRW universe.
