Temperature Chaos, Rejuvenation and Memory in Migdal-Kadanoff Spin Glasses

We use simulations within the Migdal-Kadanoff real space renormalization approach to probe the scales relevant for rejuvenation and memory in spin glasses. One of the central questions concerns the role of temperature chaos. First we investigate scaling laws of equilibrium temperature chaos, finding super-exponential decay of correlations but no chaos for the total free energy. Then we perform out of equilibrium simulations that follow experimental protocols. We find that: (1) rejuvenation arises at a length scale smaller than the ``overlap length'' l(T,T'); (2) memory survives even if equilibration goes out to length scales much larger than l(T,T').

Measurement of Cosmic-Ray Proton and Antiproton Spectra at Mountain Altitude

Cosmic-ray proton and antiproton spectra were measured at mountain altitude, 2770 m above sea level. We observed more than 2 x 10^5 protons and 10^2 antiprotons in a kinetic energy range between 0.25 and 3.3 GeV. The zenith-angle dependence of proton flux was obtained. The observed spectra were compared with theoretical predictions.

Nonlinear Rabi Oscillations of Excitons in Dense Quantum Dot System

Nonlinear optical response and optical coherence of excitons in semiconductor dense quantum dots in GaAs single quantum wells has been studied by using photon echo techniques. At low temperatures, the optical coherence is estimated to be 2 ns from the decay curve in the photon echo signal. Rabi oscillations are also observed. Unlike the results for a single quantum dot in the literature to date, the oscillation shows nonlinear behavior affected strongly by the pre-excited carrier density. The results can be explained by the theory of the local field correction originating from exciton-exciton interaction between the inter dots.

Measurement of Cosmic-Ray Proton, Antiproton and Muon Spectra at Mountain Altitude

Measurement of cosmic-ray proton, antiproton and muon spectra was carried out at mountain altitude. We observed 2 x 10^5 protons and 10^2 antiprotons in a kinetic energy region of 0.25 -- 3.3 GeV. Zenith-angle dependence of proton fluxes was obtained. Atmospheric muon spectra were measured simultaneously. The observed antiproton spectrum showed some deviation from theoretical predictions particularly in a low energy region.

Measurements of Proton, Helium and Muon Spectra at Small Atmospheric Depths with the BESS Spectrometer

The cosmic-ray proton, helium, and muon spectra at small atmospheric depths of 4.5 -- 28 g/cm^2 were precisely measured during the slow descending period of the BESS-2001 balloon flight. The variation of atmospheric secondary particle fluxes as a function of atmospheric depth provides fundamental information to study hadronic interactions of the primary cosmic rays with the atmosphere.

Experimental demonstration of quantum source coding

We report an experimental demonstration of Schumacher's quantum noiseless coding theorem. Our experiment employs a sequence of single photons each of which represents three qubits. We initially prepare each photon in one of a set of 8 non-orthogonal codeword states corresponding to the value of a block of three binary letters. We use quantum coding to compress this quantum data into a two-qubit quantum channel and then uncompress the two-qubit channel to restore the original data with a fidelity approaching the theoretical limit.

Geometrical Conditions for CPTP Maps and their Application to a Quantum Repeater and a State-dependent Quantum Cloning Machine

We address the problem of finding optimal CPTP (completely positive, trace preserving) maps between a set of binary pure states and another set of binary generic mixed state in a two dimensional space. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such CPTP maps can be discussed within a simple geometrical picture. We exploit this analysis to show the existence of an optimal quantum repeater which is superior to the known repeating strategies for a set of coherent states sent through a lossy quantum channel. We also show that the geometrical formulation of the CPTP mapping conditions can be a simpler method to derive a state-dependent quantum (anti) cloning machine than the study so far based on the explicit solution of several constraints imposed by unitarity in an extended Hilbert space.

Energy determination in the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array experiment

Using data from more than ten-years of observations with the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA), we published a result that the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays extends beyond the cutoff energy predicted by Greisen, and Zatsepin and Kuzmin. In this paper, we reevaluate the energy determination method used for AGASA events with respect to the lateral distribution of shower particles, their attenuation with zenith angle, shower front structure, delayed particles observed far from the core and other factors. The currently assigned energies of AGASA events have an accuracy of $\pm$25% in event-reconstruction resolution and $\pm$18% in systematic errors around 10$^{20}$eV. This systematic uncertainty is independent of primary energy above 10$^{19}$eV. Based on the energy spectrum from 10$^{14.5}$eV to a few times 10$^{20}$eV determined at Akeno, there are surely events above 10$^{20}$eV and the energy spectrum extends up to a few times 10$^{20}$eV without a GZK-cutoff.

Measurement of low-energy antiproton detection efficiency in BESS below 1 GeV

An accelerator experiment was performed using a low-energy antiproton beam to measure antiproton detection efficiency of BESS, a balloon-borne spectrometer with a superconducting solenoid. Measured efficiencies showed good agreement with calculated ones derived from the BESS Monte Carlo simulation based on GEANT/GHEISHA. With detailed verification of the BESS simulation, the relative systematic error of detection efficiency derived from the BESS simulation has been determined to be $\pm$5%, compared with the previous estimation of $\pm$15% which was the dominant uncertainty for measurements of cosmic-ray antiproton flux.

Temperature chaos in a replica symmetry broken spin glass model - A hierarchical model with temperature chaos -

Temperature chaos is an extreme sensitivity of the equilibrium state to a change of temperature. It arises in several disordered systems that are described by the so called scaling theory of spin glasses, while it seems to be absent in mean field models. We consider a model spin glass on a tree and show that although it has mean field behavior with replica symmetry breaking, it manifestly has ``strong'' temperature chaos. We also show why chaos appears only very slowly with system size.

Discreteness and entropic fluctuations in GREM-like systems

Within generalized random energy models, we study the effects of energy discreteness and of entropy extensivity in the low temperature phase. At zero temperature, discreteness of the energy induces replica symmetry breaking, in contrast to the continuous case where the ground state is unique. However, when the ground state energy has an extensive entropy, the distribution of overlaps P(q) instead tends towards a single delta function in the large volume limit. Considering now the whole frozen phase, we find that P(q) varies continuously with temperature, and that state-to-state fluctuations of entropy wash out the differences between the discrete and continuous energy models.

ROSAT PSPC view of the hot interstellar medium of the Magellanic Clouds

Diffuse X-ray emission from the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) is studied by using all the archival data of pointed ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) observations. For this purpose, contributions from the point and point-like sources in the ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) and PSPC source catalogues are eliminated and periods of high solar activity are excluded. The spectral analysis yielded characteristic temperatures of 10^6 - 10^7 K for the hot thin plasma of the ISM which extends over the whole Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The total unabsorbed luminosity in the 0.1 - 2.4 keV band within the observed area amounts to 3.2 x 10^38 erg s^-1 in the LMC and 1.1 x 10^37 erg s^-1 in the SMC, each with an uncertainty of -40%, +100%. The X-ray luminosity of the LMC is comparable to that of other nearby galaxies with pronounced star formation. In the LMC, hot regions were found especially around the supergiant shell (SGS) LMC 4 and in the field covering SGS LMC 2 and LMC 3. Highest temperatures for the SMC were derived in the southwestern part of the galaxy. The diffuse X-ray emission is most likely a superposition of the emission from the hot gas in the interior of shells and supershells as well as from the halo of these galaxies.

Precise Measurements of Atmospheric Muon Fluxes with the BESS Spectrometer

The vertical absolute fluxes of atmospheric muons and muon charge ratio have been measured precisely at different geomagnetic locations by using the BESS spectrometer. The observations had been performed at sea level (30 m above sea level) in Tsukuba, Japan, and at 360 m above sea level in Lynn Lake, Canada. The vertical cutoff rigidities in Tsukuba (36.2 N, 140.1 E) and in Lynn Lake (56.5 N, 101.0 W) are 11.4 GV and 0.4 GV, respectively. We have obtained vertical fluxes of positive and negative muons in a momentum range from 0.6 to 20 GeV/c with systematic errors less than 3 % in both measurements. By comparing the data collected at two different geomagnetic latitudes, we have seen an effect of cutoff rigidity. The dependence on the atmospheric pressure and temperature, and the solar modulation effect have been also clearly observed. We also clearly observed the decrease of charge ratio of muons at low momentum side with at higher cutoff rigidity region.

Deviations from Perfect Memory in Spin Glass Temperature Cycling Experiments

We study the deviations from perfect memory in negative temperature cycle spin glass experiments. It is known that the a.c. susceptibility after the temperature is raised back to its initial value is superimposed to the reference isothermal curve for large enough temperature jumps DT (perfect memory). For smaller DT, the deviation from this perfect memory has a striking non monotonous behavior: the memory anomaly is negative for small DT's, becomes positive for intermediate DT's, before vanishing for still larger DT's. We show that this interesting behavior can be reproduced by simple Random Energy trap models. We discuss an alternative interpretation in terms of droplets and temperature chaos.

Design of UHECR telescope with 1 arcmin resolution and 50 degree field of view

A new telescope design based on Baker-Nunn optics is proposed for observation of ultra high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The optical system has an image resolution of smaller than 0.02$^\circ$ within a wide field of view of 50$^\circ$ angular diameter. When combined with a high-quality imaging device, the proposed design enables the directions of UHECRs and high-energy neutrinos to be determined with accuracy of better than 1 arcmin. The outstanding resolution of this telescope allows charge-separated cosmic-rays to be resolved and the source to be determined accurately. This marked improvement in angular resolution will allow the multi-wavelength and ``multi-particle'' observations of astronomical objects through collaboration with established astronomical observations.

Measurements of Cosmic-ray Low-energy Antiproton and Proton Spectra in a Transient Period of the Solar Field Reversal

The energy spectra of cosmic-ray low-energy antiprotons and protons have been measured by BESS in 1999 and 2000, during a period covering the solar magnetic field reversal. Based on these measurements, a sudden increase of the antiproton to proton flux ratio following the solar magnetic field reversal was observed, and it generally agrees with a drift model of the solar modulation.

Discovery of pulsations from the Be/X-ray binary RX J0101.3-7211 in the SMC by XMM-Newton

We report pulsations in the X-ray flux of RX J0101.3-7211 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with a period of 455+/-2 s in XMM-Newton EPIC-PN data. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law with a photon index of 0.6+/-0.1. Timing analysis of ROSAT PSPC and HRI archival data confirms the pulsations and indicates a period increase of ~5 s since 1993. RX J0101.3-7211 varied in brightness during the ROSAT observations with timescales of years with a maximum unabsorbed flux of 6 x 10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (0.1 - 2.4 keV). The flux during the XMM-Newton observation in the ROSAT band was lower than during the faintest ROSAT detection. The unabsorbed luminosity derived from the EPIC-PN spectrum is 2 x 10^35 erg s^-1 (0.2 - 10.0 keV) assuming a distance of 60 kpc. Optical spectra of the proposed counterpart taken at the 2.3 m telescope of MSSSO in Australia in August 2000 show strong Halpha emission and indicate a Be star. The X-ray and optical data confirm RX J0101.3-7211 as a Be/X-ray binary pulsar in the SMC.

Quantum Template Matching

We consider the quantum analogue of the pattern matching problem, which consists of classifying a given unknown system according to certain predefined pattern classes. We address the problem of quantum template matching in which each pattern class ${\cal C}_i$ is represented by a known quantum state $\hat g_i$ called a template state, and our task is to find a template which optimally matches a given unknown quantum state $\hat f$. We set up a precise formulation of this problem in terms of the optimal strategy for an associated quantum Bayesian inference problem. We then investigate various examples of quantum template matching for qubit systems, considering the effect of allowing a finite number of copies of the input state $\hat f$. We compare quantum optimal matching strategies and semiclassical strategies and demonstrate an entanglement assisted enhancement of performance in the general quantum optimal strategy.
